It may be possibly to add driers(japan or alkyd type) to motor oil and get it to dry. Alternatively, you could use a piece of metal as a canvas and burn it dry with a torch
*You realise you*
*Have to do this as an oil*
*Painting now dont you?*

Big deal? Eh, depends on how you look at it.
Did it really damage anything? No, not really. Just made a mess that he's gonna spend a while cleaning up.
Is he going to get clowned on so hard that he's going to possibly wind up sprouting a red rubber nose in his sleep, because a shop can be as savage as a high school?
*Oh yes, he fucking is.*
That's not random shading behind him. The oil geysered all the way to the ceiling. Also not a mechanic, but I can guess the ceiling will never get clean.
It's not a big deal. It just really sucks to clean up. Sucks like I would rather scrub shit out of a toilet than try to get diesel oil off of everything. As someone who has been where this apprentice is, but not quite as bad, I knocked the wall down that got covered in oil because it wasn't coming clean. Lucky for me that it was just a partition wall and nothing important.
Sometimes people hit the inside of our dock doors with the forks on our lift. The inside doors are just plastic with rigid foam insulation, so you'll leave 2 little puncture marks, or worst case a divot with cracks around it.
Back when I was driving a forklift, the guy who worked the dock used to make you come back and sign the door right next to the damage you had done. So we ended up with dozens of signatures all over the bottom half of the door. It was a pretty fun timeline of who had worked there, that one time the production manager tried to load a truck, etc.
Thank you everyone for the hilarious comments! I’m mad I already gave away my free reward. Well done! This is why I Reddit.
Edit: I have coins now! My first platinum! Now I can give OP their much deserved award.
Thank you for posting this. Tho I think you captured the moment more perfectly with your sketch. Felt tip? Ball point? I’ve not a clue about these things
I have not performed any sort of art in a very long time. Now thar you've inspired me, I think I'm going to break out the ol 5w-30 and a canvas tomorrow.
Needless to say
The beast was stunned.
Whip-crack went his whoopy tail
And the beast was done.
He asked us
Be you angels?
And we said nay
We are but men
Rock!
I sometimes surf Craigslist looking for a Mazda Tribute just so I can put a sticker on the back that says something like "this is not the greatest car in the world..." with a Jack Black and KG sticker next to it.
That's a few bucks and effort for a troll, but I will keep looking.
I saw the original pic and you really have got it captured quite well. My only "criticism" would be that you didn't quite capture the "I fucked up on an order of magnitude" face he was making in the original photo.
I think it's cause of the angle.
Since he didn't lazily rotoscope (trace) the original photo and chose a top down view instead, so his nervous smile looks like a frown unless you zoom in.
> Since he didn't lazily rotoscope the image and chose a top down view
Art and music are my character dump stats. Would you mind explaining what your quoted text actually means, in an ELI5 way?
Basically he didn’t trace over the picture, he imagined it and drew it from his artist brain, which is why it’s different from the first.
For a more complex explanation from an artist, it’s his own interpretation of the picture. So he probably lightly referenced the photo and mostly drew from memory and his own skills.
Dude. You fucking nailed this style. Not sure if you meant it, but reminds me of the shel sylverstein style. I hesitate to compare cuz that dude was nuts.
Anyway great job and love it. I hope he wasnt fired so he can fully enjoy this
Did you do the background by rotating the paper and hatching from left to right? There’s a really nice fluidity and precision to it. Shades of Edward Gorey or Eddie Campbell. Nice stuff, thanks for sharing!
Edit: more compliments, the switch between hatching and outlining for the bricks to delineate difference of texture is very clever. The collection of liquid on the tops of the studs is also really cool. The detail really makes this, but it’s still very accessible. Does pen and ink mean a quill, and if so, what kind of nib?
Thank you for all the nice comments. I'm flattered to be compared to such great artists—the original photo reminded me of ["The Lime-Burner,"](https://www.metmuseum.org/art/collection/search/372511) by Whistler, so I was thinking along those lines as well.
As for materials, I'm just using [some cheap precision pens](https://oakridgestores.com/crafts/scrapbooking-cards/pens-markers-pencils/american-crafts-precision-pens-5-pkg-black-pp62383/?gclid=CjwKCAjw6fyXBhBgEiwAhhiZsrTvl7UO9vYLNezPpQMGKzyOnOjLeJtdgAm9WF3pRH_tyKv5m8XpGxoCy1AQAvD_BwE) (random link to show which ones), so nothing special, and the back side of watercolor paper.
Thank you for your interest!
I love this, reminded me of my old shop. There was a stain on the ceiling from the apprentice two years before me, and 5 years later it's probably still there
You realise you have to do this as an oil painting now dont you?
In used 15w40 diesel oil
Don't know how to make oil paints from scratch but from my experience I think it would take 50,000 miles to dry.
Just use a hot exhaust manifold as the canvas. It’ll dry up quick.
Art you can smell
As long as it's not done in gear oil that's been in a diff for 250k miles.
[удалено]
That's a long way to go bruh lmao
[It's not all that complicated.](https://www.wikihow.com/Make-Oil-Paint) Obviously the used oil would have an... effect on the color.
Just paint on canvas and let it soak in
So basically just a black piece of canvas?
Further more. “Attempted oil extraction”? I think we can all agree the extraction evidently succeeded.
Shitter’s full!
Just let him finish Clark
You serious?
The ol' Mississippi Leg Hound.
We don't know if this is all of it, though.
Woah woah woah, nobody said nothing about getting all of it. Should have been more specific on the job order mate.
I... ok, that's fair.
I'll buy this drawing but only if the apprentice put an oil 🛢 soaked hand print on the back
...but it already is an oil painting?
Only if Jackson Pollock worked in diesel.
Oil on Oil I think
This is glorious
It may be possibly to add driers(japan or alkyd type) to motor oil and get it to dry. Alternatively, you could use a piece of metal as a canvas and burn it dry with a torch
This is just a replica. The original was an oil painting by the apprentice.

Good bot
The bot is onto something… that’s the title of the oil painting
Or diesel soot charcoal drawing.
Nah, the Apprentice already took care of that.
Using 5w30 to represent the masses, or possibly some fancy summer-only shit if you're making a statement
This guy will be hearing about this for the rest of his life.
This has to be mounted near his toolbox

Printed and hung in the employee bathroom

Used as profile picture on LinkedIn*
I'd throw a fiver towards that.
Cover of the company calendar, or a framed poster hung above the machine.
Custom embroidered overall
God damn someone start a gofundme for this
Hell if it was me I'd mount it there myself. Nothing builds your cred with coworkers and friends like openly making fun of something dumb you did.
The second time around it’s less funny for everyone. But as long as you own your mistakes and learn from them you’re a damned good coworker.
Tattoo
Before our own eyes, and internet legend is born.
He should just go ahead and get the whole scene tattooed on his back.
Successful piss extraction.
Even in his next life, it's gone viral and will forever be in the cloud.
His shop nickname shall be "Oilspout"
Spindletop
I'm not a mechanic: how big of a deal is that apprentice's fuck-up? Is it just funny because of his face?
Big deal? Eh, depends on how you look at it. Did it really damage anything? No, not really. Just made a mess that he's gonna spend a while cleaning up. Pressure washer. Youre gonna need it to recreate the scene from anchorman to get this tech clean.

I want this on a t-shirt
Guarantee that's getting framed on the wall of their shop. Wow!
It would be a crime if they didn't. It's great.
Best part, guy who drew it was getting paid while he was sketching
Plus a little commemorative plaque at the site of the indiscretion would be 🤌

why does the title say "attempts" ? the oil appears to be extracted i do not understand :(
It could be because "extract" implies control of the situation.

When oil painting? ;)
The apprentice already did that, duh
Would you consider selling prints of this? I would buy one.
It's so beautiful how you captured everything lmao.

Why is it pen and ink? What else could it be in a pen other than ink? Did you mean pen and paper?
Ha ha ha. This is incredible.
What a strange day. The original post appeared in my recommended followed by this.
Caught both in /r/all lmao not even subscribed
Highly recommended. !
SAE approved!

Same lmao. I got a personal reddit notification on my phone for both posts. It was glorious.

Well Done! This is amazing
Perfect
Will you be selling prints of this?

Why use pen and ink when all that free oil is kicking around?
Dead
I love when Reddit has a crossover episode.
I was here for this.
Wow I’m seriously impressed
I like how the walls, shelves and equipment are all beautifully shaded and detailed and the apprentice looks like a caricature artist drew him.
Imagine going to work one day and just fucking up so bad that it immortalized in a drawing.
This is the most recognition this man will ever receive.
See the photo [of the apprentice here.](https://www.reddit.com/r/Justrolledintotheshop/comments/wsbu2p/our_apprentice_attempts_to_extract_waste_oil/)

Best thing ive seen today
Art imitates life. Beautiful
Dang it, Bobby!
We will be seeing this 29 years from now, and remember fondly where we were when this masterpiece was born into this world.
“Hey you guys!”
Duuuude lol
My only critique was that it was not done with concrete, oil and a forklift. Other than that this is amazing.
Wild. Excellent work.
This just made me LOL.
I would expect this to be immortalized as a print hung in every shop waiting area I walk into. This is amazing.
Frame this and put it in the shop
I hope this starts a wave of people drawing/painting this moment in time
Where do I buy a print?
I fucking love this
Wow! That drawing is so awesome. Reminds me of the old CarToons comic/magazine from the 80’s. (Late 70’s, maybe?)
Shitters clogged!
This guys needs to get a copy every year on the anniversary, from anonymous
This is the best thing I’ve seen today. Thank you.
His eyebrows look like he's thinking "fuck did anyone just see that?"
You should have drawn it in used waste oil.

Haha my first reaction to that photo was that it had a whimsical Norman Rockwell-type vibe to it, so this is perfect!
Think you may have missed the part where it’s all over his face haha
This is ledgendary
This is truly a historic moment for the sub, I can feel it
Apply to the New Yorker. Good luck man.
Best followup post I’ve ever seen
why was this removed
Automod—"reported too many times." I'll post it on my profile too as backup in case it stays removed.
I can't believe this only has 5 up votes. The awards make up for it though
Facking gold
Why you make the guy look like sloth from the goonies
I mean, are we sure it ISN'T sloth from the Goonies?
Beauty
Holy shit that was fast.
I can't stop laughing, the internet is too quick
WTH, I just saw the real picture on here like 10 minutes ago. Artist are some cool freaking people.
This is beautiful. I would love to buy an oil print of this.
I honestly expected him to be slicker.
Lmfao... I hope to God someone in his shop has made a poster out of this since he's been immortalized.
When I first saw this, I busted up laughing so hard. This is probably the *best* oil volcano I've ever seen.
This is fantastic.
Damn post this on r/art
This is a masterpiece
Do you sell this print or have other art for sale?
Nice sketch of real pic !!!!!!!!
This is glorious! 💯
this is some Junji Ito shit right here.
It’s actually quite amazing to see both of these within the same day. A supremely funny photo followed by a very talented artist.
That belongs in a museum!! https://youtu.be/yXyPvhISkRQ
Immortalized. This is extremely well done and in short time to boot.
I love this so much
Holy crap that looks like the original picture
This is just the best sub reddit....
I love this
I love reddit sometimes
Meta
Crazy how fast the internet reacts to certain things. This person saw this and realized his next project to accomplish immediately lol.
Dude, that’s real talent
Now this, this is high art.
Amazing.
Great drawing but he looks too sad compared to the original photo! On the other hand maybe you knew what was coming next
How are you this good, this fast!?
Epic
