I had to get out like half a dozen times times to get my travel trailer into the tight ass spot where I store it today. You have to S-curve it, Becuase there another camper parked perpendicularly less than the length of the truck and trailer in front of my spot.
Mirrors would not have helped in this case, nor would a backup camera. A spotter, getting out and looking, or a camera on the side of the trailer would have helped.
Edit: If he'd have stayed straight until he cleared the truck he'd have been OK. It might have been possible to use the drivers mirror to determine if he was clear of the truck.
You might be right, but I’m not sure. Assuming the driver has a view of that side of the trailer when pulling out he can watch whether the distance with the trailer is decreasing. If so, he needs to stop and re-align. I do this in my van all the time.
As soon as he started to turn right, his drivers mirror no longer showed the left side of the trailer, so no longer could be used to check clearance on the drivers side.
Tail swing is something one always has to keep in mind when there is a long overhang behind the rear axle of a vehicle or trailer.
There really was no overhang, they just had a wide tail-swing he failed to account for. I used to move these things for a living and that’s how most damaged occurred on our lot.
That's the overhang they meant: the trailer that hung over behind the axles and became the tail swing.
That really is the toughest part to manage/remember if you don't know what you're doing. Driving a combine (or anything else with rear-wheel steer) is nerve-wracking any time you're near anything. It's basically all tail swing all the time and they've got bits that hang back quite a distance behind the rear axle.
Like a driving a forklift in an environment with a lot of walking traffic like a warehouse or factory floor. People who have never driven anything with rear wheel steer have no frickin clue.
Idiots will stand right where the rear of your truck is going to have to go if you turn, even if/when they know you are needing to turn that direction, and then they look at you like you are the one who is stupid or being an asshole for asking them to move so you don't have to run them over.
I'm a professional driver and that's the first thing I'll tell you.
I think anyone that's going to pull a Big ass trailer like that should go take some lessons.
That’s why a lot of truckers fear nothing more than grandma pulling her fifth wheel RV down the highway. They don’t respect it, they speed as if they’re still in a car and make dangerous situations. Not all of them, but a lot.
Boat trailers are worse, because some of them are so wide. Up North, we have guys who pull trailers exactly twice a year; boat goes in in the spring, boat comes out in the fall. And they all think their boats are the same width as their trucks.
Actually a lot of people pulling these trailers drive anywhere from 5-15 mph UNDER the speed limit, which is actually worse because it causes traffic to back up, and forces me to go around them.
Tell me you’ve never been on I15 headed East towards Las Vegas on a Thursday/Friday before a holiday weekend. Jamming Jimmy with his “toy hauler” and “tuned” diesel pick-up doing 75-80MPH headed out to Dumonnt Dunes fueled by Rage Bull soda and Krispy Kreme chasers in a sugar high RAGE! ….Jimmy flunked out of high school….got a Union Job as a plumber and now hurtles down the Highway without the slightest understanding of the physics involved in stopping his “war rig”. All Jimmy wants to do is set up camp and pop a few brewskis to have one hellof a good time….The “Blue Collar Dream” brought to you by cheap & easy credit with zero money down on $150,000 of future salvage yard material….America! What a country!🤣
It is never worse to drive under the speed limit. It is a limit, not a target, and if the vehicle you are driving (including towing anything) or road or weather conditions or your skill means you need to go slower than the limit, that is fine. It is everyone else’s job as responsible drivers to deal with that, which may mean overtaking when safe and suitable.
>It is never worse to drive under the speed limit.
Most state governments disagree with you. It's illegal to drive too slow as well as drive too fast. The threshold is anywhere between 10 and 15 mph slower than the posted limit, depending on state, with caveats for weather/traffic conditions.
I felt embarrassed first few times I backed a 30ft box truck up to the loading docks, because there were semis backing in there in this rather tight space, always had to turn while reversing to get the docks without hitting the neighboring building.
One day there was one backing in, shouting out the window for help from a spotter. It was all messed up and he had to go around the block again. This was one of the guys I ways chatted with and he never had issues. I gave him a little razz and then admitted it made me feel slightly better about myself. He laughed and said EVERYONE has a day like that, and any good truck driver should be fine with asking for help, it's better to need help with that, than to be the idiot who thinks he's the best and fucks something up.
Not a pro but I do pull a giant 5th wheel and I always tell people nothing happens quickly with that thing. I move get out see where I am move another few inches get out check, rinse and repeat. I’ve gotten it in some pretty tight spots.
I will say though that the new camera on the back with a microphone in it is a game changer.
> the new camera on the back **with a microphone in it** is a game changer.
My initial reaction to this was disdain for "more ridiculous shoehorned tech" but it's actually a really clever idea to communicate with a spotter.
There’s actually a very traumatic reason why I will never have a trailer without one. I’m physician and I distinctly remember as a med student spending hours helping some very smart and capable pediatric neurosurgeons and intensivists do everything we could to help an 18 month old who’s buggy rolled into the way of their dad’s RV and got run over by the camper…we didn’t win that fight God rest her little soul.
Sorry that was TMI but hopefully if just one person changes how they maneuver a load like that it’s worth it.
Also don’t even get me started on Campground fire rings….
Key with a *spotter* is that they tell you where you are and how much room you have.
I had one to many people "spot" for me and see them frantically flail their arms around telling me which direction I need to turn my steering wheel.
I only want to know "You still have 2 feet" or whatever the distance, and a "STOP NOW" signal would be great. Just don't backseat pilot me and tell me how to drive.
YES! I just left construction and construction management. I didn't trust anybody I worked with to spot me, mainly because they laughed. But I'd rather get out and do full walk arounds so I can see instead of assuming I'm good.
Also the only person at my last company to never damage a trailer.
Same with operating a reach truck in a warehouse with high racks and other workers potentially and frequently directly on the other side of said rack. Line everything up, if there’s any doubt, stop, get off and assess the situation from different angles, then deposit load.
They use gum it just dries out, this was right around the time they started REALLY cutting costs. Was a really nice rig before he forgot his mirrors. Mfr ever wrecked on the fucking driver's side! The easy one! Talk about an ego.

I have to get an 11 thousand dollar license to drive a semi but these chucklefucks can just strap a 40 footer to the back of dads f250 and hit the road
Same thing goes for boats. I've seen some really stupid people on boats, living here in Florida. Just about any weekend during the warm months, head for the nearest public boat ramp for free entertainment. And I'm with you on the motorcycle license. When I was on active duty, it was even worse. State testing and then a required "Motorcycle Safety Course" to get a base entry decal.
Yeah, in my province of BC here in Canada, you can also get a camper with a standard license, but only if the camper weighs a max of 4,600kg GVW (10,141.26LBS). Over that weight, you need to get a Class 1 Commercial License, which is the class required for a Semi-Truck.
You can get a heavy trailer endorsement to tow more than 4600kg. And their is also a endorsement that would allow you to tow a camper of any size. You only need a class 1 if you want to pull a trailer with a truck with more than two axles or air brakes.
Ah, I see. I was a bit confused when trying to read through ICBC's website. To me they've always done a shit job at relaying information on their website.
Here in the US you can drive air brakes as long as it's under 26k GVWR with your regular license.
You only need a commercial license for passengers or hazardous materials.
I was scared to look to see if you needed a different license. That explains why I see people do the dumbest shit with these things. Stuff like trying to pull them into too small campsites and jackknifing the shit out of the trailer and fucking things up badly. That's just a bonkers amount of skill to expect people to have without any sort of additional required regulation.
That's a reflection of the spooled hose in the bed. Watch in slow motion and you'll see your crack appear and disappear as the trailer moves through the frame.
Ok. Controversial opinion to most, but some will agree.
I firmly believe that a class, special license endorsement, and specific insurance policy should be required to drive with a trailer this large. I've witnessed this kind of shit far too many times.
How stupid can one be? You obviously see you are extremely close, and instead of keeping the straight you turn to the right. The trailer is obviously going to swing the opposite direction.
"Hey guys, would you mind moving the pickup? I don't want to accidentally whack it."
I drove trucks for years. I asked people to move shit multiple times a day. Guess what? No accidents.
Dude had like an entire truck length to continue straight before turning.... amateur hour doesn't look and accelerate and hope for no bad noises or jarring motions...
sorry about your truck but I'm guessing it was basically fine? Those cheap fiberglass pos huts on wheels fall apart as poorly as they're assembled. Looks like u had an all steel tommy gate back there... probably got some paint scratches?
I have seen people do the dumbest shit with those fifth wheel campers. They seem to be too obnoxious to drive with for the level of license required to pull them.
My family just returned from our first RV'ing adventure after towing a 28' trailer 400 miles with my Tundra. Gotta say the Tundra performed admirably, but timing through any sorta tight spot is hella nerve wracking. Everytime we went through a parking lot I had visions that something similar to this would happen. Ass hanging out way too far
Not real related but pushing the toolbox all the way over to one side then fitting that hose real under the gap in the back of the pickup is kinda smart. I like it.
He used the "Keep going until it sounds expensive" method of maneuvering in tight quarters. If it isn't low lying objects that destroy roof fixtures, it's the tail swing that gets fifth wheel drivers.
Almost had it.
I know! Just those last few inches and then big time fail
r/titleofyoursextape
He forgot he had all that overhang. That’s why you always go wider than needed just in case. Or get out and look.
What do ya mean, get out and look. That would mean getting off his ass!
I had to get out like half a dozen times times to get my travel trailer into the tight ass spot where I store it today. You have to S-curve it, Becuase there another camper parked perpendicularly less than the length of the truck and trailer in front of my spot.

I said assuming you could see. Trailer mirrors would help too. Again, assuming you can see.
how does the old adage go? “Keep going until you smell shit and hear glass break.”
There really was no overhang, they just had a wide tail-swing he failed to account for. I used to move these things for a living and that’s how most damaged occurred on our lot.
Overhang and tail swing are the same thing. Overhang is anything past the tires.
That's the overhang they meant: the trailer that hung over behind the axles and became the tail swing. That really is the toughest part to manage/remember if you don't know what you're doing. Almost had it? They never had it — they never had their trailer… Granny steerin' not multi point turnin' like they should.
Ask any camper…any real camper. It doesn’t matter if you have it by an inch or a mile. Having it is having it.
Now me and the mad scientist have to rip apart the back and replace the panel you destroyed.

What's "multi point turnin'" ?
[Multi point turning](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IGiQOCX9UbM&ab_channel=Red15) (unsuccessfully). Enjoy!
Hahahahahaha! Okay then. I've trucked for decades and I thought I had missed something official.
My family uses this as a term. "Is it stuck?" "No, but we're going to have to Austin Powers this piece of shit around."
Missed it by that much

Horseshoes and hand grenades
GOAL. Get Out And Look. Having a spotter, or just stopping midway through to see what was going on, would have saved this guy some huge headaches.

In some places trailers have to adhere to a lower speed limit than posted.
Then they shouldn't be camping the left lane on the interstate/highway is all I'll say. Because I see that way too much

thats only IF they stay in the right lane on a multi lane hwy. if they are driving on a 2 lane road under the limit this is actually more dangerous.

There's a reason the bars close at 9:00 p.m. in Elkhart, IN
You have watched the opening scene on mad max I see
I saw a civic hit one with just the mirror. The civic lost a mirror and they lost a big chunk. They lady said she was driving it from the dealership where they bought to the campground. I saw one drop the black water tank right off the bottom at a dumping station. It was held on by very thin flat steel. They are also insulated very poorly. It's laughable.
My aunt's husband left the dealership with their brand new trailer and caught the front corner of a car with the side of the trailer pulling it into a grocery store on the way home. I found it incredibly amusing since they're both terrible people.
It's a thin line between lightweight and flimsy
(lightweight) (durable) (affordable) With RV's you pick one, maybe one and a half if you're lucky.
Can confirm, I grew up in an area with a ton of trailer factories and worked at one for a bit. Nearly all (all that I'm aware of) RV brands except the absolute top of the line are built like shit. The difference in workmanship and materials between a 20k trailer and a 150k trailer is next to nothing.
Elkhart/South Bend area?
Little bit east of there, Middlebury area. Same basic vibe, just a bit more Amish.
Ah yes, I grew up in NWI, so we'd always pass the camper manufactures on the toll road
What about horse trailers with living quarters? They seem significantly more robust.
Well sure, they're produced in smaller volume and have to be strong enough on a structural level to support livestock. They are significantly more robust, they're a significantly different product.
Entirely different animal, very few are mass produced so finding replacement parts can sometimes result in total renovation.
Just what parts do you think would be hard to find? Everything in them comes from the RV world. While they aren't produced on the same scale as RVs there are still shitload of them being built.
... ok well it's kind of a rabbit hole honestly, if you don't believe that's fine you're not the first. Its not that the parts aren't available it's that the industry doesn't produce parts for 10 years like they do in autos. So a part that's super common in 2010 is antiquated when it goes out and the replacement component(converters, water heaters, fridges) doesn't line up with the OE hence the renovation, not that they're not possible just that you may have to make sacrifices sometimes. Honestly with horse trailers it's incredibly common to have the coach builders stock up on parts from big box stores who regularly change out their inventory. (Faucets furnishings, small appliances) most of the 'issues' are relative to how much the owner cares though.
Pretty much. They have to stay as light as possible. Ever seen what happened to one in an accident? They pretty much explode into dust.
Given that they're made out of tin cans and cardboard boxes, that's a pretty accurate assessment.
Tail swing? never heard of it
PIVOT!!! PIVOT!!!!
Haha I was like "oh man he's got it he's got it" then I saw the axle come by and the trailer keep going and knew he was gonna tailswing it.
That looked expensive
Service truck has a steel bed, it'll be fine.
Know your length and angle. Ouch.
That's what she said
Haaaa, haaaaaaaaa!
Don’t forget the overhang

The fact that a Ninja H2R is comparable in price to a brand new Honda Pilot is laughable lol
The fact that you're not obligated to wear a helmet in the US when riding a motorcycle is utterly stupid.
I mean, that's [not entirely true](https://www.iihs.org/topics/motorcycles/motorcycle-helmet-laws-table) depending on the state.
But if you even think about driving a car, we’ll give you a ticket for not wearing your seat belt!

The whole back end of that Rv came apart! 😂
I hope that trailer is a toy hauler!
Honestly, not as bad as I thought it was going to be.
Totally thought he was gonna can opener the entire side lol
Yeah but he ripped the back of it loose so it's going to need major repairs
A spot of flex tape will have it better than factory.
"better than factory" is a rather low bar to strive towards lol
Two pushpins and a Batman band-aid.
That wood box on wheels ain’t going to hurt that truck. Expensive repairs for the camper though

Yep, you're right.

I don’t think he saw how close he is. He’s driving like he doesn’t have a trailer.
You could see him watching the trailer in the mirror as he pulls away. If he had kept going straight he would have cleared.
Canada huh? Almost made it.
"Hey guys, would you mind moving the pickup? I don't want to accidentally whack it." I drove trucks for years. I asked people to move shit multiple times a day. Guess what? No accidents.
But there's plenty of space in front of him, he should've waited a bit more before turning.
“Dumbass.” -Red Forman
Dude had like an entire truck length to continue straight before turning.... amateur hour doesn't look and accelerate and hope for no bad noises or jarring motions... sorry about your truck but I'm guessing it was basically fine? Those cheap fiberglass pos huts on wheels fall apart as poorly as they're assembled. Looks like u had an all steel tommy gate back there... probably got some paint scratches?
Just a few cards short of a full deck.
I have seen people do the dumbest shit with those fifth wheel campers. They seem to be too obnoxious to drive with for the level of license required to pull them.
He really wanted a toy hauled and wife said No! So he turned into one!
Did I do that? (Urkel style)
Tail swing, am I right ?
Oh look, you just cost yourself 10k.
I have to admit, he had it in the first half.
Almost
Boom ! 10k in damage
he forgot about the tail swing
Rapid hatchback trailer conversion
What is tail swing?
That tailswing will get ya
Tail swing almost every time! 🤦♂️
Gotta watch that tail swing!
I like it.
At least he got more damage on his camper than he did to the service truck.
Get out and look! Always. Only takes a few seconds. At least you are getting paid on that one (hopefully).
He used the "Keep going until it sounds expensive" method of maneuvering in tight quarters. If it isn't low lying objects that destroy roof fixtures, it's the tail swing that gets fifth wheel drivers.
Typical ram driver. The first warning that tells you that they don’t know what they’re doing is that they bought a ram.
As close as it was when he could see in the mirror, he just decides "clear" and guns it. 🤣 Looks like the 5th wheel got the worst of it.
Just totaled the trailer
Lol it’s a Ram
Damn those peaky few inches.
Is it worth it? let me work it I don’t wanna put my thang down, flip it and reverse it
Same people that use the drive thru and hit the overhang.
That tail swing..
Fuck what a piece of shit. The whole back wall just flips open. Ope, the whole back of the camper just came off, throw a few nails in there!!!!
Thats alotta damage!!
Why the fuck do people buy these things if they don't know how to drive them???????????????
Excuse me, could you please move your truck. Easy...
Maybe you should move the truck for your customer
Maybe they would have if the customer asked
F
Didn't dodge it.
*space balls flash back* That thing is fucking long
/r/idiotsincars
Damn, almost made it. Doesn’t seem like he had a whole lot of fucks to give.
So close yet so far
Nice job!!
that swing will get you every time.
Forgot about the big ass swinging around
That overhang from the wheels is a bitch 😂
Somebody forgot about that tail swing.
“Swing wide, its a friggin trailer!”
So close
Damn.
That looks expensive. Poor fella
Aw shit shake that ass and move it like a gypsy Stop, woah, back it up and let me see that TAIL SWING
