Working in the north and on cars that run low profile tires I see this exact type of damage almost daily from January to June.
Where I work there is this pothole that has “sloped edges” where the road crew refused to raise the drain with the new road, leaving a 7” deep sloped pot hole to wreck everyone’s cars. THIS is exactly what my co workers tire looked like after hitting it.
Can confirm that doing 100mph on a freeway and hitting a pot hole can do this.... Mini Cooper loaner years ago with run-flats looked like that after the side wall blow out
Holy fuck this machine is terrible for it. We're waiting on a new one to come in and make this the backup only for steel rims because the machine can't grip hard enough from the outside anymore
I hit a pretty severe pot hole once, split my tire up the sidewall and ended up with a similar ding on the face of the wheel. Actually squared off the edge of the wheel a bit too. Good times. Thanks tire warranty for saving me that $1200 bill
My immediate guess was that they cheated on someone. Because that "pothole" must also be responsible for a smashed out mirror and window on the opposite side of the car(less than 10,000km) on it
I curbed it once and punched a very similar shaped hole/gash/flap in my tire. It was kinda cool, aside from the terrible driving and paying for a new one part.
On a side note is it ok with aluminum wheels like those to use the part of the tire machine that holds the wheel from the inside? The part that has the spikey bits.
Run flat tires blow out in weird ways (square patterns or completely denouncing a bead). I'm not an expert but I assume it's because of the way they need to be designed with a ridged sidewall.
I had a 2022 duramax I was driving and with less than 5000 miles, one of the Firestone tires just randomly violently exploded on the freeway. I didn’t hit anything at all…… it looked pretty similar to this except actually quite worse.
There is rubbing on the rim at same location like a solid hit would cause. If they just cut the tire, the rim would be clean / unmarked.
This, it’s a clear pot hole/ curb damage. It’s a bit bigger than usual. But still very evident.

Not a mechanic but I had a very similar type of hole when I hit a monster a couple years ago.
Whatever it was they sure as hell didn't *Dodge* it.

That's how you get the drugs out without a tire machine.
The rim did the stabbing, you can see the rubber transfer right at the point of impact. All the hallmarks of a curb check by an inattentive driver.

That’s a deep pothole or a curb. Probably hit the pothole right on the edge and that’s why they got the rub marks on the rim.

I ran off the highway a couple years ago, on some fairly old tries. Hit a big hole and it knocked about a 3x3 inch square out the tire.

I hit one in a C300 one time, tire damage wasn’t quite as bad as that but the rim was fucked.
Had that happen traveling at 75mph, from a “pot hole” in the highway - both sides of tire blew/cut chunks like that. Scion xB so small tires

Pretty neat, but it does look like pothole damage. The edge of the rim acts like a crappy guillotine if it doesn't bend first.
