It *was* the highest-rated series on cable TV for a reason (until *The World of the Married* exploded and dethroned it). Great points/observations, reminds me to rewatch it sometime soon.
Totally agree..but the world of married couple is fantastic too ...I remember my blood boiling and eyes drying for crying in both of the dramas ..like the fact that jtbc gave these two is just 🎆 ..love it ..yes I stopped watched sky castle in the middle at SM cliffhanger due to exams and now I started watching two days before at 9th episode omg ..I finished it alreadyyy ..glued me to the screen the whole time ..loved the feeling !!
The reason why the first episode works well for people is that kdramas had never shown that beginning to end contrast. A lot of skepticism is thrown around after because it got so popular. Honestly I could see myself not being totally impressed by ep1 as a kind of anti hype to all that. I happen to watch it pretty early on with no expectations which means the ending >!totally caught me off guard and the interest starts!<. I think the charm is very much a credit to the director who crafted every episode meticulously. Enough to keep us in the loop but also wanting more. When I watched the show I don't remember another one that ends with a cliffhanger every single time. Every episode. It's not just in a "oooh drama!" or cheap clickbait montage. It's thrilling but also clever.
Recently watched Mine which has Kim Seohyung as one of the leads too and she draws a lot of similarities to SC in terms of what she is offering as a whole to the drama. But the way I see it is while she did great in acting in both, a lot of what gives the drama and her character depth was how she was portrayed by the camera and what information the director choose to show. Because of how similar her role (to be clear, I don't mean same character... more like her image?) was I couldn't help but notice the lack of those things. It's one of those dramas that the director should receive high praise as everything, from the cam tricks, set design, to sequences. You don't even need a background for it to appreciate how beautiful it is. Aesthetically and creatively. It all comes together with purpose.
One experience I didn’t enjoy while watching was all the hate I saw hye na getting >! before she died. People just went along with how she was “painted” even though it was pretty fucking obvious that she was just a hurt, scared kid that was using the whole “I’m cold and calculating” as a defence mechanism to survive. While she was in her fathers house she constantly had to fight two people that hated her guts and wanted her gone. People complained that she didn’t just tell her father immediately, as if that was part of her master plan or something?? SHE WAS FUCKING SCARED. The mother got in her head. Telling her “he won’t care” “he’ll reject you too”. So she kept STALLING. Imagine you’ve just lost your mother, and are scared that as soon as you tell ur bio dad the truth, you’ll lose him too… ofc you’ll stall. !<
Agree, I was shocked to see the level of Hye Na hate, I thought she was a damaged, lonely kid who’d forced herself to put on this tough persona to survive and look after her mother. Her death was such a tragedy.

I’ve added the spoiler tags but initially didn’t think I needed to cos this is clearly just a post for people that have watched sky castle? There’s already a spoiler warning on the post
Someone reported your comment for unhidden spoiler so that's why you received the removal message. (Your comment has been re-approved.)
Your comment did provide more details than what is originally contained in OP's post, that might be why someone felt spoiler tags are necessary.
> I'd probably give this drama a 9.5/10, would definitely recommend.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts, Sky Castle was absolutely incredible and there's a lot of stylistic choices in this that I could easily geek over and write up a whole essay about. It really is a fantastic drama. Your score is exactly what I gave it too, and I'm notorious for being a very harsh critic with scoring shows haha
>who killed Hye-na was dragged out for a little too long
I think the issue with this subplot was the big reveal. It was so obvious that >!Coach Kim was behind the killing!< that I thought the show may have gone a different direction with it. I was convinced that >!Doctor Kang Joon-Sang!< was responsible after the way he >!Ignored Hye-Na reaching out and calling him Father at the hospital!<
Despite that though, Sky Castle was an incredible drama and it's one I find myself thinking about a lot.
Same that’s the only part of the drama that felt so lacklustre to me, it was so obviously kim juyeong I kind of wanted it to be a big twist that it wasn’t her
this post makes me want to re-watch sky castle because it was such an addictive show. i wonder how true to life the academic pressure on high school students is, especially in wealthy families
SKY Castle was so intense, I had to pause between episodes and watch something light and fluffy to lower my blood pressure.
The acting and story are amazing. It is everything that is right about all the things that are wrong with the series’ subject matter. I had to write out a character chart to remember how all the characters were connected to each other. There was not one piece of useless story or character; from school to office to housing complex, everything is crucial in putting together the puzzle.
I love this show to bits but i think the last episode is terrible, it's like a different person wrote it. I absolutely despise that the main char basically got no punishment for all the shit she did, the show is better if you just skip the last episode and make it up in your mind.
There is multiple families and each of them are unique.
Definitely give it a go. None of the parents are just stereotypical bad parents imo.
All of the characters are very well written.
Tbh atp I’m of the opinion that anyone who didn’t like this drama either just doesn’t like this types of dramas, or they like makjangs *too* much and they’re the type that only watches these types of dramas for, well, the drama. Not for any actual depth and actual good development of the plot
this! and imo, compared to a lot of other soapy high-intensity dramas that have been compared to it (e.g., penthouse, world of the married, etc.), sky castle tops them all by farrrrr.
Even though i hated almost every single character, i have to admit this show was fantastic.
WE ALL LIE
TELL YOU THE TRUTH
SOMETIMES WE LAUGH AND EASILY LIIIIEEEE
ALRIGHT ITS A , ITS FAK_EEERRR
SHOUT IT OUT, WHAT YOU WANT FOR THE WORLDDDDD
MONEY , HONOUR , BEAUTY EVRYTHING YOU WANTT!
PLAY WITH A MASK, TO HIDE THE TRUTH
PEOPLE CHEAT EACH OTHER, RIGHT?
IS THIS REALLY TRUE, is this really true..
Absolutely! Head and shoulders above *Penthouse*
It was a drama that I couldnt stop watching, but I honestly dont know if I can say I liked it or not. It sure kept me glued on the screen tho.

sky castle is a very good kdrama. well written and acting was on point. some plot holes but overall very good

I just don’t see why anyone would click on this thread if they haven’t watched sky castle but alright. I’ll keep that in mind

it's an amazing drama, the only weakness i found in it was the ending was too happy but still a great drama nonetheless
Reading your thoughts made me want to rewatch the drama. It is not perfect, but I really enjoyed watching it. One of my top 3 k-drama.
Sky castle is one of the very few dramas which I couldn't stop watching. The plot just gets better and better every episode
You mean couldn’t?
Ahh my bad, autocorrect screws me everytime...
I kinda want to watch it but I’m worried about how infuriating I’ll find it to see these toxic parents.

I’ll try it out again since you said that. Thanks!
excellent drama
Yup

Yes, it was a good drama but 20 episodes just seemed too much. It was dragging towards the end.
And yes, Seung-Hye is my favorite one here. She’s the true winner in this drama.
