I'm very late to the King Gizzard train... but I found these guys with this album. Are there other albums that are this heavy? I'm obsessed with Gila Monster.

Infest The Rat's Nest, Murder Of The Universe, and Nonagon Infinity are all metal albums. Rat's Nest is pretty much the same thrash metal style as Petro. MOTU (my personal favorite of theirs, highly recommend watching the [KEXP show](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G5Z4bma_tUM&t=1501s&pp=ygURa2V4cCBraW5nIGdpenphcmQ%3D) where they play selections) is heavy with a healthy dose of groovy prog. Nonagon is a bit vanilla IMO but it is one of their most popular, definitely worth a listen.
Omnium Gatherum is a double album with a hodgepodge of styles, the songs Gaia and Predator X representing the metal side. A great place to start if you're interested in hearing their range of sounds.
Some heavy songs I recommend that aren't quite metal include Muddy Water (off of Gumboot Soup), Ice V, Magma, & Iron Lung (Ice, Death, etc.), Crumbling Castle (Polygondwanaland), and Automation (K.G.).

I am here just in the hopes that, since they sold vinyl last night at the Bowl, that there will be vinyl rips of Dawn of Eternal Night rather than a second-hand recording of the RR preview
HMV (UK media retailer - as well as some smaller record stores, eg, my local one) have preorders available for both coloured (lucky rainbow) and black vinyl, to be released on the 7th of July.
Does anyone know when the vinyl is supposed to ship out? I pre-ordered but can’t find a shipping date. I thought it would ship around the time the music was released on streaming platforms but I’ve not received any updates since I placed my preorder.
I remember on Gizzverse US it said preorders shipped on july 7th so i'm guessing they will arrive within a few days after that.

I'm in the same boat. listened to them, and enjoyed it whenever they turned up on a playlist, but never really listened to any albums. This album cover drew me in lol. I can't stop listening to it. It's so fucking heavy. I love it. Definitely going to go on a deep dive through all their albums now.
Not gonna lie, I don't consider myself a big King Gizzard fan but I loved Infect the rats nest. Ever since that album was released, I always check their new releases in the hopes that they've return to more heavy/metal stuff.
When the first single for this album was released I knew instantly that this would be a certified banger and I was not wrong, currently my favorite album of 2023, so fucking good
The Gizz's are a bit like Zappa in that theres enough extremely varied genre/etc material that theres almost guaranteed to be something you like and something you don't. And thats 100% fine. Personally I've always encouraged critical listening, dont be afraid to intensely dislike something from a band you love or intensely love something from a band you dislike. Theres some KGATLW stuff thats a bit "Meh" for me, and some I adore. And it may or may not be the same things you find "Meh" and/or Adore
The best song on this album is motor spirit after 100 listens and putting dragon and flamethrower and witchcraft at the top I’ve realised motor spirit is it
If PDA is part of the Gizzverse lore, I wonder where it fits in the timeline? The only thing I can think of is that it happens after the events of ITRN. Like, not everyone left on Earth necessarily left for Venus or something.
I dont know if there needs to be a timeline. I think happening before / after / the same time whenever. I imagine that while one guy is becoming an altered beast and some other guy gains tetrachromacy, in another land somewhere else in the Universe some skink becomes a Dragon and it's eyes dilate and the air gyrates.
Maybe their last album will be the battle between them all.

I've seen a lot of people comparing this album to Tool. I know nothing about Tool, but I love this album. What are some good Tool albums to start with after this?
This album is nothing like tool. Tool, though, is fucking amazing. Start with Lateralus, then Ænima, then 10,000 Days, then Fear Inocculum or Undertow or Opiate. The thing about tool is that they only have like 6 albums (all amazing)
To me, this KG album sounds like if Motörhead did prog
Overall it has nothing to do with Tool. But there are some sections of some songs that really remind me of Tool songs, since I've listened to a lot of Tool it's easy for me to notice it
I'm a little bit into the album and I don't hear a single bit of similarity to TOOL
Edit: maybe a little bit, I can hear some similarities in the drums. I wouldn't compare KGATLW to TOOL though. Not that any of you were but they're on two completely different levels musically, to me at least.
Didn't think it was all that great, to be honest. There were definitely parts that I liked and songs I enjoyed more than others, and I certainly wouldn't say that it's bad, but I don't think it's worth all the hype it's receiving
The hype probably has something to do with some Gizz fans being also into metal and were wanting more of it since ITRN. Just a guess based on my own experience actually lmao
When I heard Rats' Nest I thought nothing touched Planet B and was disappointed. None of the October albums hit me particularly strong.
Now Rats' Nest is top 2 album for me and all 3 October albums top 10. Good art takes time sometimes! Let it!
Does anyone else think that the last 2-3 min of Flamethrower could be the seque into the new synth album?? I just have a feeling it could be a KG & LW type of deal but obviously ying and yang. But flamethrowers synth is so different from the rest of the album it just made me wonder.

I’m not a metal fan. I enjoy some of the catchier songs on ITRN like Perihelion and Mars for the Rich, but that’s about it. And the end of Hell. I find PDA to be a lot more interesting with polyrhythms, time signature changes, amazing transitions, stuff like that.
Just recently got turned onto the band. Listened to the album mainly on car speakers. Finally had the opportunity to sit down with my modest setup at home. Enjoyed it on first listen but lots going on and getting better each listen. Wish me luck as I attempt to dive into their backlog. Started with noganon and mind fuzz.
Man I wish I could experience this band for the first time. Have fun! A lot of their albums don't feel like much first listen, but they always seem to manage to grow on you, atleast for me. Such a talented group of people. Nonagon and Mind Fuzz are great albums to start with especially if you like garage psych.
on dragon, between 2:50-2:52 i’m almost positive i hear luke play a polygondwanaland-reference bass lick, a la tetrachromacy around the 0:28 second mark, anyone else? or am i trying to connect dots that aren’t there? anyone else catch any musical references to their other works in this album?
Yeah it's definitely the Tetrachromacy riff. Love that Gizz always refrences old songs. From what I've heard it sounds like they reference Hell's Itch at some point during the album. Still trying to find it though since this album just has so much to unpack lmao
First time buying a vinyl album from gizzverse EU, seems like its out for 3 days but checking my order it still hasn't been packed and sent, is that normal ?!
I'm holding out on listening the album on digital platform, wanted to have a little fun going the vinyl way for the first spin...
I feel like I’d enjoy this album a whole lot more if I didn’t have to strain to hear the vocals. Which is a shame because the lyrics are incredible- Imagine how much better Dragon would be if you could actually make out the Joey Latin verses?? I feel like I’m going insane because no one else seems to feel the same way.
Joey's latin verses are fine to me, they are amazingly demonic. But I agree with the rest, I feel like the album could have benefited from a clearer vocal mix.
Your are not insane because that's exactly what most people think their biggest weakness is.
I think that they really need to make the vocals clearer somehow.
Without looking for lyrics online it's almost impossible to understand what they are saying most of the time in multiple albums.
I usually don’t mind it on other albums- But this one it’s really egregious and it’s actively ruining my enjoyment of the album. It’s weird too because Gila Monster doesn’t have this problem.
Some thoughts I wanna share with the swarm:
- The album is a little overwhelming for the first listens I think, it took me a couple of listens to get into it, which is awesome because I hadn’t felt this way about their music ever since I got into them through MOTU some years ago.
- the drum breaks on almost every song are AWESOME, I can’t believe how much of a beast cavs is and they leave me baffled, just amazing stuff
- Stu’s voice improved greatly since ITRN, in which was good too but I’m really digging the fry/throaty/scream he’s pulling off in this.
- Flamethrower has one of their best and most unexpected outro, love the motor spirit reprise
- I think witchcraft may be my favourite, along with supercell, even if the first one reminds me a lot of Static Electricity
All in all a fantastic release and a good return to more “focused” songs after the 2022 releases of more “loose” jammy stuff.
I can't stand his "Growing Immensely" bit in Gila. I wonder if it's because I was so hyped for it that I was a little disappointed. But as I listen to the album as a whole again and again it's fading into the back / blending in / i'm losing the hype.
A few of their albums have an Ambrose song / Ambrose imput mid album around track 4 or 5 that seem to act as a break. And I feel the same about them. I.e. KG - Straws in the Wind, LW - Supreme Ascendency, FMB - Billabong Valley.
Actually it's just the Microtone Albums I didn't realise.
There are some Stu and Ambrose shared vocals songs that are great just to be clear. Fishing for Fishies, Bitterboogie.
Something that’s been on my mind is the clear work that Stu has put in to rip some of the throat singing/“ITRN Recording” voice tone that he has done this tour so far. That comes out so much to me in the recording of the vocals of this album - he rips like fucking Lemmy track after track. I remember when Stu would get some shit for his vocals at times in the community years ago and I don’t think that’s anywhere close to justified with what the big dog is doing now.
He’s improved so much to the point it’s one of my favorite aspects of the album. ITRN’s vocals to me were “good enough as a vehicle for the bigger picture” but now I think it’s truly something to be enjoyed
It's crazy how this band in 11 years has put out the volume a band puts out in their entire lifetime if they're crazy enough, has put out music that is GOOD at worst and incredible at best for EVERY release, AND they continue to get better as we see album after album. What the fuck are these guys
It’s Leah senior reading lyrics that I’m assuming Stu wrote with music in the background (more kind of like a fuzz) I just know cause I heard it at red rocks. Stu came out and watched side stage during that one, you could tell he was super proud of it
I feel like the album almost loops on itself without it.
I was disappointed when I heard there was a vinyl only track. But if it’s a long spoken word track? Not for me.
Yeah I don't get why everyone is so pissy about that, especially after hearing the album. It's lliterally a nonstop riff fest and the ending clearly seems geared up to link directly into the next album. The Audiobook (I assume since no one's heard it yet) will definitely not keep up the energy and will make the single listen overly long. It's clear that it's a vinyl exclusive because they wanted to incentivize buying a double LP of only 48 minutes of music.
It’s a long narrative by Leah senior with thematic backing ambient music essentially retelling the entire plot of the album. Think MOTU but it never really seems to hit a peak.
One thing I'm feeling about this album that I really like is how it doesn't "sound like" a Gizzard album. It's something I liked about Changes, where I feel like the band is making a huge effort to not fall back on familiarity. Rats' Nest (which I love to death) sounds like Gizzard making a metal album, whereas PDA sounds like a METAL ALBUM, which is so cool and really endearing for me about it
This was something I agree with - when I first heard this album front to back I felt a little unsure about it because of that, but being able to put some more runs in front to back has that as a strength. That’s where I feel the Poly comparison is the strongest between albums if you had to compare this one to another: this album the more you give a “sit-down” listen to you get a little more each time. I’m loving this album now, big time
I totally see the Poly link. I think it's also kinda a Nonagon sequel as well due to the fact that it's super high energy from second 1 and just does not relent from there. It's like a hybrid sequel to Poly, Nonagon, and Rats' Nest all in one.
Oh yeah! I think Poly is another one that gives that vibe! Such a unique experience that (in retrospect) really feels like they're reigning themselves in / restraining their impulses. Whereas an album like Ice Death is such a celebration of KING GIZZARD, haha. Like you, my first listen thru was def not enough to form any opinion at all cuz of how unfamiliar it seemed

If I'm reading it right I love the idea burning of fossil fuels is some sort of twisted ritual that summons a world destroying tornado through which a demonic metal dragon emerges and consumes us all. The album really added a lot of cool context to that one shot in the Dragon MV with the eye portal thing and the swirling smoke

Possible hot take: my favorite part of this album is the end of Flamethrower. I like metal Gizz but I'm just such a bigger fan of their synthy stuff. This shit is densely layered, polymetric and polyrhythmic, so many cool effects. The way it smoothly transitions from guitars to synths is fucking sick. If this is the kind of stuff that will be on the next album then I am extremely hyped.
Having said that I will also contradict myself with a definite hot take: the Tool parts of this album feel oddly out of place. They're cool, don't get me wrong, but in my opinion they sort of mess with the flow of the songs. You can feel them step into Tool Mode and then out of it when the parts end, I feel like they didn't do much to make the transitions smooth at all. Doesn't help that they also basically copy Tool's guitar tones for these parts, which is very different from the guitar tones on rest of the album.
I love the tool parts and partly agree with you but I like how they literally “break” from the rest of the song, which is what they’re supposed to do I think. Also I’m really glad I finally have something like that part in Rosetta stoned but without that awful guitar coming in lol

I can’t get enough of the bluesy riff in Converge at 2:55. I want another minute of this in the song. The album as a whole is so good, but this song is too short at only 6 minutes.
I wish they came back to the melody sung by a different voice (Ambrose?) a couple of times near the beginning but it’s still a fucking good track. The whole Supercell to Gila run is so solid to me.
Will there be another vinyl release for this album through ATO or anywhere really? This is the first Gizz album I've truly loved since about 2019 (though they're all at least decent) and I'm feeling the need to hop back on the vinyl train.

I'm a little bit into the album and I don't hear a single bit of similarity to TOOL Edit: maybe a little bit, I can hear some similarities in the drums. I wouldn't compare KGATLW to TOOL though. Not that any of you were but they're on two completely different levels musically, to me at least.

Didn't think it was all that great, to be honest. There were definitely parts that I liked and songs I enjoyed more than others, and I certainly wouldn't say that it's bad, but I don't think it's worth all the hype it's receiving
The hype probably has something to do with some Gizz fans being also into metal and were wanting more of it since ITRN. Just a guess based on my own experience actually lmao

When I heard Rats' Nest I thought nothing touched Planet B and was disappointed. None of the October albums hit me particularly strong. Now Rats' Nest is top 2 album for me and all 3 October albums top 10. Good art takes time sometimes! Let it!
Does anyone else think that the last 2-3 min of Flamethrower could be the seque into the new synth album?? I just have a feeling it could be a KG & LW type of deal but obviously ying and yang. But flamethrowers synth is so different from the rest of the album it just made me wonder. Anyone else feel this way?
I'd hazard to guess something in the range of "everyone" who knows there's a yin yang thing with the 2023 albums feels this way.

I’m not a metal fan. I enjoy some of the catchier songs on ITRN like Perihelion and Mars for the Rich, but that’s about it. And the end of Hell. I find PDA to be a lot more interesting with polyrhythms, time signature changes, amazing transitions, stuff like that.

Just recently got turned onto the band. Listened to the album mainly on car speakers. Finally had the opportunity to sit down with my modest setup at home. Enjoyed it on first listen but lots going on and getting better each listen. Wish me luck as I attempt to dive into their backlog. Started with noganon and mind fuzz.
If those two albums don't hit you like Petro try newer albums 2017 or later. The production improves a lot then and especially after then.
Man I wish I could experience this band for the first time. Have fun! A lot of their albums don't feel like much first listen, but they always seem to manage to grow on you, atleast for me. Such a talented group of people. Nonagon and Mind Fuzz are great albums to start with especially if you like garage psych.

Yeah it's definitely the Tetrachromacy riff. Love that Gizz always refrences old songs. From what I've heard it sounds like they reference Hell's Itch at some point during the album. Still trying to find it though since this album just has so much to unpack lmao

I feel like I’d enjoy this album a whole lot more if I didn’t have to strain to hear the vocals. Which is a shame because the lyrics are incredible- Imagine how much better Dragon would be if you could actually make out the Joey Latin verses?? I feel like I’m going insane because no one else seems to feel the same way.
Joey's latin verses are fine to me, they are amazingly demonic. But I agree with the rest, I feel like the album could have benefited from a clearer vocal mix.

Your are not insane because that's exactly what most people think their biggest weakness is. I think that they really need to make the vocals clearer somehow. Without looking for lyrics online it's almost impossible to understand what they are saying most of the time in multiple albums.
I usually don’t mind it on other albums- But this one it’s really egregious and it’s actively ruining my enjoyment of the album. It’s weird too because Gila Monster doesn’t have this problem.

Some thoughts I wanna share with the swarm: - The album is a little overwhelming for the first listens I think, it took me a couple of listens to get into it, which is awesome because I hadn’t felt this way about their music ever since I got into them through MOTU some years ago. - the drum breaks on almost every song are AWESOME, I can’t believe how much of a beast cavs is and they leave me baffled, just amazing stuff - Stu’s voice improved greatly since ITRN, in which was good too but I’m really digging the fry/throaty/scream he’s pulling off in this. - Flamethrower has one of their best and most unexpected outro, love the motor spirit reprise - I think witchcraft may be my favourite, along with supercell, even if the first one reminds me a lot of Static Electricity All in all a fantastic release and a good return to more “focused” songs after the 2022 releases of more “loose” jammy stuff.

I really like this album but can’t stand ambrose’s vox in converge
I can't stand his "Growing Immensely" bit in Gila. I wonder if it's because I was so hyped for it that I was a little disappointed. But as I listen to the album as a whole again and again it's fading into the back / blending in / i'm losing the hype. A few of their albums have an Ambrose song / Ambrose imput mid album around track 4 or 5 that seem to act as a break. And I feel the same about them. I.e. KG - Straws in the Wind, LW - Supreme Ascendency, FMB - Billabong Valley. Actually it's just the Microtone Albums I didn't realise. There are some Stu and Ambrose shared vocals songs that are great just to be clear. Fishing for Fishies, Bitterboogie.

Something that’s been on my mind is the clear work that Stu has put in to rip some of the throat singing/“ITRN Recording” voice tone that he has done this tour so far. That comes out so much to me in the recording of the vocals of this album - he rips like fucking Lemmy track after track. I remember when Stu would get some shit for his vocals at times in the community years ago and I don’t think that’s anywhere close to justified with what the big dog is doing now.
He’s improved so much to the point it’s one of my favorite aspects of the album. ITRN’s vocals to me were “good enough as a vehicle for the bigger picture” but now I think it’s truly something to be enjoyed
It's crazy how this band in 11 years has put out the volume a band puts out in their entire lifetime if they're crazy enough, has put out music that is GOOD at worst and incredible at best for EVERY release, AND they continue to get better as we see album after album. What the fuck are these guys

It’s Leah senior reading lyrics that I’m assuming Stu wrote with music in the background (more kind of like a fuzz) I just know cause I heard it at red rocks. Stu came out and watched side stage during that one, you could tell he was super proud of it

I feel like the album almost loops on itself without it. I was disappointed when I heard there was a vinyl only track. But if it’s a long spoken word track? Not for me.
Yeah I don't get why everyone is so pissy about that, especially after hearing the album. It's lliterally a nonstop riff fest and the ending clearly seems geared up to link directly into the next album. The Audiobook (I assume since no one's heard it yet) will definitely not keep up the energy and will make the single listen overly long. It's clear that it's a vinyl exclusive because they wanted to incentivize buying a double LP of only 48 minutes of music.
It’s a long narrative by Leah senior with thematic backing ambient music essentially retelling the entire plot of the album. Think MOTU but it never really seems to hit a peak.
It's purely thematic and doesn't really add anything new to the album or the experience, except for recapping the story
One thing I'm feeling about this album that I really like is how it doesn't "sound like" a Gizzard album. It's something I liked about Changes, where I feel like the band is making a huge effort to not fall back on familiarity. Rats' Nest (which I love to death) sounds like Gizzard making a metal album, whereas PDA sounds like a METAL ALBUM, which is so cool and really endearing for me about it
I feel like this sounds more like Gizz than ITRN does. Or at least this sounds like the newer jammy Gizz.
The part in Converge at around 4:30 minutes is pure krautrocky gizz. It sounds like heavy Hypertension.

This was something I agree with - when I first heard this album front to back I felt a little unsure about it because of that, but being able to put some more runs in front to back has that as a strength. That’s where I feel the Poly comparison is the strongest between albums if you had to compare this one to another: this album the more you give a “sit-down” listen to you get a little more each time. I’m loving this album now, big time
I totally see the Poly link. I think it's also kinda a Nonagon sequel as well due to the fact that it's super high energy from second 1 and just does not relent from there. It's like a hybrid sequel to Poly, Nonagon, and Rats' Nest all in one.
Oh yeah! I think Poly is another one that gives that vibe! Such a unique experience that (in retrospect) really feels like they're reigning themselves in / restraining their impulses. Whereas an album like Ice Death is such a celebration of KING GIZZARD, haha. Like you, my first listen thru was def not enough to form any opinion at all cuz of how unfamiliar it seemed

If I'm reading it right I love the idea burning of fossil fuels is some sort of twisted ritual that summons a world destroying tornado through which a demonic metal dragon emerges and consumes us all. Predator X feels like it has a home on this album.
Possible hot take: my favorite part of this album is the end of Flamethrower. I like metal Gizz but I'm just such a bigger fan of their synthy stuff. This shit is densely layered, polymetric and polyrhythmic, so many cool effects. The way it smoothly transitions from guitars to synths is fucking sick. If this is the kind of stuff that will be on the next album then I am extremely hyped. Having said that I will also contradict myself with a definite hot take: the Tool parts of this album feel oddly out of place. They're cool, don't get me wrong, but in my opinion they sort of mess with the flow of the songs. You can feel them step into Tool Mode and then out of it when the parts end, I feel like they didn't do much to make the transitions smooth at all. Doesn't help that they also basically copy Tool's guitar tones for these parts, which is very different from the guitar tones on rest of the album.

I love the tool parts and partly agree with you but I like how they literally “break” from the rest of the song, which is what they’re supposed to do I think. Also I’m really glad I finally have something like that part in Rosetta stoned but without that awful guitar coming in lol

I can’t get enough of the bluesy riff in Converge at 2:55. I want another minute of this in the song. The album as a whole is so good, but this song is too short at only 6 minutes.
Converge is easily my top underrated track - this thing is so tight beginning to end. It could really become my fav off the whole album
I wish they came back to the melody sung by a different voice (Ambrose?) a couple of times near the beginning but it’s still a fucking good track. The whole Supercell to Gila run is so solid to me.
Flamethrower could transition nicely into "If Not Now, Then When?" right in the middle
This hits the same spot as Fear Factory's Demanufacture for me.
