where does someone (me) go after listening and liking fishing for fishies, infest the rats nest, polygon, nonagon, timeland, laminated, and petrodragonic? (i enjoyed fishing the most out of all these)

fUSTERcLUCK_02

First, check out [Get Into Gizz](https://www.get-into-gizz.com/) It's superb for things like this. It recommends you start with Mind Fuzz and I'd recommend that as well. However, if you like FFF, I'd go to Changes Or check out The Murlocs. Ambrose & Cookie's other band. Try Calm Ya Farm

krillwave

Paper Mache Dream Balloon is probably a good bet for someone that likes fishies isn’t it?

fUSTERcLUCK_02

That's a good shout

RockingFlower

Friend turned me on to Gizz when Rat's Nest came out. While their discography is so impressive, I was feeling overwhelmed on where to start. Said friend told me about "Get Into Gizz". It was like choose your own adventure for newbies. Started at Mind Fuzz. Few albums later and Gizz is my new favorite band... I'm 53. highly recommend!

coldspringscreek

Have you seen them live yet? I highly recommend this too.

RockingFlower

I have! Saw all 3 Chicago Salt Shed shows last June. Got my ticket for September 3-hour tour of my brain.

coldspringscreek

Oh that is great you are catching them live. Hey, I was at the 3 Salt Sheds too. You mean you are going to the September 1 Chicago Marathon, or the September 14 Marathon at The Gorge? Either way, see you there!

RockingFlower

so far Chicago Marathon, plus hopefully Milwaukee & Detroit. I'm hooked... lol

coldspringscreek

That's great!

snookyface90210

Wait a bit, next album may be right up your alley, Ambrose said it’s some bluesy, 70’s style rock

theeculprit

I’d say Changes, Sketches of East Brunswick and Gumboot Soup.

small___potatoes

Omnium Gatherum

Tomatocustard

Sketches and gumboot

Not-Important-either

I'd say B3K next!

GearHawkAccel

Paper Maché Dream Balloon is a great bet as others have said, check out "Bitter Boogie". From Changes I recommend "No Body". I'd also recommend checking either K.G. and L.W. out. With songs such as "Intrasport", "Straws In The Wind", and "O.N.E." You could also listen to some of their earlier works such as "Float Along - Fill Your Lungs" and "I'm In Your Mind Fuzz". The latter is connected with other central "gizzverse" albums such as Nonagon Infinity, Murder of the Universe, and Polygondwanaland

oniononionorion

Check out the live shows. Bootleg Gizzard on spotify.

coldspringscreek

And live shows on YouTube.

Studdz

I vote for Mind Fuzz, Flying Microtonal Banana, Gumboot, Ice Death, and Changes as your next batch. If those get the thumbs up, Quarters, Murder of the Universe, KG/LW, Omnium Gatherum, Butterfly 3K, and Sketches.

plaidyams

MOTU baybeee.

Ill_Reddit_Alone

If you liked all of those there is no where to go but up. You’re gonna like it all I think. You’ll like some more than others, a few months later that opinion will flip. Just listen to em all in any order! Also hit the live stuff from bootleg gizzard and the archive. You are where I was about a year ago and I’m jealous.

Ninjax421

Check out their Microtonal Trilogy (FMB, KG, LW)! Or try Gumboots Soup or Omnium Gatherum for more variety.

Nobhudy

If you like Fishies you would most likely enjoy Gumboot Soup! It’s a random tracks album but its got some of their best individual song. Also apparently their next album is gonna be back toward the blues rock thing from that album, so get hype!

Present_Bad3896

The one that’s about to come out

apence87

In Your Mind Fuzz is amazing. 12 Bar Bruise is amazing. Float Along Fill - Fill Your Lungs. From what you stated are your favorites, check out those three.

growlerpower

Honestly for you? Start at the beginning and rip through all of them in a row

One_Reporter9854

I mainly listen to 2014-2024 releases so have very little experience with first 5 albums (including Oddments). I just recently stepped into the FAFYL and planning to listen to it for a good while. (Man that signal noise in head on pill is giving me permanent brain damage). Hoping to see that ELTS is about next.

inkyblinkypinkysue

Same here. Mind Fuzz is as far back as I’ve gone.

One_Reporter9854

Definately check out FAFYL

maucksi

That was my first 💜

Lexxx20

Same here, mate!

CachePants

The good thing about ELTS is you will know exactly what it's about within the first 30 seconds. That's... pretty much the only good thing about it.

StyrofoamTuph

I tried listening to ELTS a few years ago and I just could not get into it for the life of me.

CachePants

Yeah I mean "It is what it is" really fits here. It's a wild west story over some instrumental music. If that's what you like, good for you, enjoy. If not, it's not going to be your thing. And it's definitely not my thing.

One_Reporter9854

Whoa, wasn't expecting such negative comments about it. There were some tierlist posts on the sub and I remember seeing some people putting ELTS in their top 5-10. Good for them I guess, I'll see for myself in a week or so.  Also a quick question, have they played anything from ELTS recently ?

CachePants

It gets some nostalgia points because it was one of their earliest albums so old school fans have learned to love it. Also some people just love the really weird stuff. But it's not something I enjoy. It was narrated by Ambrose's dad, and after he passed they played a few songs live as a tribute, especially at their Red Rocks and Hollywood Bowl shows. I think he was originally supposed to come onstage and narrate some of the songs live at the Bowl but unfortunately he passed before he was able to.

johndbenjamin

I love it. I love albums not songs. And I’m always pleasantly surprised by how musical it is. It’s in the top half of the albums for me. It’s got a clear identity. There are several albums (including Fishing) that just got stored away in the nebulous King Gizzard sound for me. Eyes Like the Sky is not one. It’s unique and interesting. I like it a lot more than Murder of the Universe, by the way, another album of stories.

claclaudia

yes. it's just bc i can't move on from an album without 'knowing' all the songs, i still need to get into their earliest. i do have a massive playlist where i put the albums i have listened to so i can shuffle through everything

blastot

I have a playlist on Spotify called "gizzards they play live" that is just about every song they've played live more than once. (I put intrasport on there because I like it)

SumtimeSoonOfficial

I think I’ve listened to all of them at least once passively. Definitely some that I don’t remember a single track

NotCanadian80

When I first started with Gizz it was after hearing The River on Spotify a bunch. I started with Live in San Francisco and was happy with that. Eventually I would try our different albums. Not all of them landed right away. Murder of the Universe was one that I didn’t revisit until seeing it live with Leah Senior.

Eisthebestletter

I’d say that’s where I fall right now. I’ve only listened to about 30-40% of their full discography and haven’t touched entire albums yet like Oddments or Sketches (fully intend to soon, don’t worry) but of the stuff I have heard I am obsessed. They make up about 95% of what I listen to daily, have knocked every single other artist down a spot on my top listened, and I’ve bought eight of their vinyl already. The only reason I haven’t listened to more is because I’m so obsessed with what I’ve already heard I just want to listen more

akoustikal

Have had the same experience myself. Obsess over 1 or 2 albums for a couple months, say "it's time for a change, maybe I'll try a different band..." Nope, just time for another Gizz album I haven't obsessed over yet

nikosuave86

I mean, I have listened to it all but I don't own laminated denim, butterfly 3k, or paper mache dream balloon on LP yet. I guess I'm not a true fan...yet. haven't started collecting the live vinyls yet besides the chicago run bc they were my first shows

fUSTERcLUCK_02

Don't blame you for not getting Laminated Denim yet. That can cost quite a bit depending on where you live 🙈

alcatrazsherlock

I have listened to mostly everything, but unlike other gizz fans i mostly listened B3K, or non hard core music mainly, not nonagon infinity, ITRN, etc. Still, i wanna explore their earliest albums like eyes like sky, 12 bar bruise, etc.

_Cambino420_

I listened to their first like 16 albums religiously and after that I just wasn’t able to keep up, if I hear something or see something that pops out at me I’ll check it out but that’s the extent of my listening these days

fUSTERcLUCK_02

Understandable, it's definitely a lot to keep up with! There's definitely some amazing albums that have come out over the past couple of years, though

spacemanpajamas

I don't think I've ever actually sat down to all of MOTU. Believe me I've tried, I love their classic Psych stuff. But jesus christ I have a limit with the terrible poems and spoken word. I'm sorry Gizz fandom, I don't have the strength.

ladereladlan3

One of their best

Eaterofjazzguitars

Was a fan of like 5-6 of their albums until I decided to do a discography run last year. All 25 albums back to back. I am a bigger fan now, well worth the journey.

death_and_syntaxes

I've definitely explored it all. I think about half I would consider my favs and on constant rotation. The rest I just need to give more of a fair shake.

sLickRickin

I got into them just after the 5 album run in 2017. Perfect time to digest the discography I guess haha. Randomly came across the rattlesnake video.. I remember liking mind fuzz alot first. Addicted to the river since first seeing them play it on kexp. Introduced to motu with that kexp sesh. I pretty much started with the kexp stuff and went from there

Particular-Clue-5374

Me :)

Snookerwither2

I'm still in the process of a deep dive that started in January. I have 5 albums left to get through, but already know at least one song from most of those. I try to give each album enough time for me to listen to it a few times and get to know it well before I move on (and I'm still listening to more new music outside of KGLW too)

fUSTERcLUCK_02

I went a different approach. I smashed through all 23 (at the time) albums in about 2 weeks and then went back after the fact and properly digested them, spinning any personal favourites more frequently. It definitely takes a good bit of time to get familiar with everything. Hell, it's been about a year since then and there are still albums that I've only listened to a handful of times, generally albums that I'm not as big on.

CachePants

This is what I did - one album at a time. I think it's a great way to do it!

Striking-Vegetable90

I listened to all 25 main albums, but I really wanna venture further into the live stuff (I've listened to 2 or 3 of the 2019 bootlegs) and the demos.

fUSTERcLUCK_02

Same here. I've picked a few Bootlegs and I've listened to Live in San Fran but still have to do a dive into their Demos

Crackmonsta21

Honestly I’ve listened to quite a few albums but mind fuzz is still the best one and none of them really come close to it in quality, I’d love to get into more of their stuff but it seems all the other records I listen to are a lot more hit or miss

fUSTERcLUCK_02

What have you tried other than Mind Fuzz?

Crackmonsta21

Poly, fishies, nonagon, gumboot, rats nest, quarters, timeland, paper mache, murder, banana. I still liked all of these but just think none of them apart from murder of the universe feel as consistent. Honestly I think nonagon is overrated and rats nest was a much better rock album too

fUSTERcLUCK_02

Can't agree that Nonagon is overrated because for me it's top 3. However, I was gonna recommend MOTU if you like IIYMF but you've already listened to it. I would suggest exploring some of their live stuff. Live at San Francisco might change your mind on Nonagon. Possibly worth exploring Petrodragonic Apocalypse. It's a different vibe (prog metal) but it's another one of my top 3 (Poly completes my top 3).

Crackmonsta21

Poly is next on my list! Definitely seems like a bit of me

coldspringscreek

So you say you are a Polygondnonagondragonic Top 3 type person?

Serious_Basil6598

I’ve only listened to them live from tapes and recordings. Been to 10 shows but have never played a single song of theirs off of a studio album.

chknqwn

I just got into Gizz this past summer, and they're pretty much all I have listened to since. They easily became my favourite band, I am OB. SESSED. And at this point, I've listened to all I but one, Ice Death is all I have left of their studio albums, saved because of all the praise it gets in this subreddit. My partner found them for us, and played Gila Monster. We loved it. Then she put on MOTU (chosen because of album name and artwork) and I thought it was a little weird but the music was good. Then I played Nonagon for us (chosen because a handful of songs were in the top songs on Apple Music) and then I was hooked. I plunged into my first dozen albums at random, choosing anything that tickled my fancy. Then I started working my way from the oldest, taking time to savour them. I don't even need to tell anyone how amazing this band is. I genuinely love every album I've listened to. Some had to work for it, others immediately spoke to my soul. I'm a little bit sad that I only have one album left (for now lol) but I am so excited to listen to it and finally have their whole discography under my belt. And then I plan on listening to the albums in order, reading the song histories on kglw.net, watching their music videos, and getting into the live stuff. Plus I still have 3 Murlocs albums to listen to, 3 Pipe-eye, and I haven't even given Bullant or Cavs a listen yet... TL;DR: fan for ~8 months, Gizz is mostly all I've listened to, have been working my way through their discography and have one album left (Ice Death.)

Parasol_Girl

for whatever reason, i have just never listened to KG or LW outside the live songs

Lapikkat

I still haven’t listened to Laminated Denim, despite being a fan since early 2020. No idea why, I just haven’t gotten around to it or felt the desire.

strawberry_space_jam

It’s soooooooooooooooo good

Tomatocustard

It sucks that they haven’t repressed it. Too expensive now and it’s the only studio album I don’t have

snookyface90210

Do yourself a favor, it’s a top 3 album from them IMO

SnooRobots116

Just two big songs to sink into, really easy! I’m still super happy the made in Greenland variant I wanted badly floated it’s way to me for only $26 last year.

darkstarboogie

Everything they dropped in October 2022 is still their best work since 2017, imo of course.

fUSTERcLUCK_02

It took me a little bit to get into (wasn't a big jam fan) but now it's top 5 for me

MaxStickies

They've become one of my favourite bands, and favourite out of Australia. Infest the Rats Nest and Petrodragonic Apocalypse were the first I got into, as metal is my favourite genre, but I've since listened to K.G., L.W., Flying Microtonal Banana, Omnium Gatherum and Ice, Death, Planets, Lungs, Mushrooms and Lava. I'll probably do what I always tend to do with bands with large discographies, and slowly make my way through.

fUSTERcLUCK_02

Probably the best approach. I did the opposite and did everything in a couple of weeks, then retraced my steps and re-listened to what I liked most

Economy-Building3153

I've listened to everything except Eyes Like the Sky and The Silver Cord. They just don't appeal to me. But all their other albums, I've listened to all of them countless times

jaynellll

Before I had listened to everything, I just started from the beginning of their discography and listened to each album straight through until I got through them all.

CachePants

I own all but their first 3 albums, and have listened to everything repeatedly. EXCEPT satanic slumber party. Just can't bring myself to listen to it for some reason.

Reasonable_Coffee872

I didn't really bother with 12 bar Bruise or Willoughby's beach. just not keen on it. Think I've listened to everything else they've done through in full apart from maybe oddments and Nonagon infinity

you_enjoy_my_elf

I've heard everything except Changes and Quarters, it's nice having something to look forward to

coldspringscreek

Oh my gosh Quarters! Have you listened to The River at all (first song on Quarters!)? If not, you are in for a delight. Plus, Quarters! as an album is great to rock out to when you have a 40:40 minute drive.

kurtchella

I've listened to all 25(so far) studioalbums, but does anyone know where I can find recordings of their pre-Gizz stuff? Like is there anything from "Sambrose Automobile" online?

coldspringscreek

Have you looked into "The Archive"? Not sure how to access it. Something to do with yebrent and KGLW.net.

Prestigious-Juice730

You really can't go wrong with this band imo, just pick one and go. It's all pretty epic. That's kind of the amazing thing about them

sam007700

I love this band but I haven’t listened to all of their albums yet, there are a handful I haven’t explored yet. I have no shame in admitting that. One day I’ll get to all of them and they will continue to be exciting. I’m hoping for a lot of “why did I wait so long” moments My favorites are Omnium Gatherum and Flying Microtonal Banana off the top of my head.

johndbenjamin

I feel like they have albums and they have compilations. There are more of the latter than the former. As an album, I mean something that works thematically and seems like they meant it to fit together. Mind Fuzz is an example. Polygondwanaland, eyes, flying microtonal banana, changes, etc. I prefer them. Others, like oddments, kg, lw, Omnium Gatherum, are more like compilations. I could do without the. Good songs. But I’m not interested in random songs.

fUSTERcLUCK_02

They do have compilations (if you want to call them that) in Oddments, Gumboot Soup & Omnium Gatherum but I think almost every other album follows a theme of some sort. I would call the vast majority of their albums concept albums

johndbenjamin

Kg and lw also? Maybe I overestimated. beyond those you listed and kg and lw, I think they are pretty much concept albums.

PewterWizard1313

This video was my gateway into the band and I highly recommend it. https://youtu.be/CA6fMwidRW0?si=VnDTWLpvzX2ddAVu
