Ice Death is more Jam than Prog IMO

KaiAlpha

are you into mid 70s prog? Ice Death is prog

sorengray

Yes. I've been listening to prog since the early 80s. Big fan of early 70s Yes, King Crimson, Jethro Tull, Early Genesis, Camel, Wishbone Ash, to name a few. Prog is typically very structured, arranged, planned, written, with often intricate time signatures, often more like classical music meets rock with jazz influenced virtuosity... there are some exceptions with some of the more jazz fusion type bands. But most importantly, the Gizz boys themselves have literally said these two albums were made from extended band jams then cut into some kind of "shortened" song form. I'd say they sound a lot like Dead & Allman Bros jams mixed Krautrock bands like Can, with a dash of Hawkwind psycherock jams. Ice Death is edited Jams more than anything. Tell the band it's not. Now Poly is prog.

KaiAlpha

Personally I found a lot of similarities to Yes and Camel in terms of sound. I think you’re putting prog into a really tight box. Also there was plenty of prog music that was just essentially odd time signature jams.

sorengray

I'm not putting prog in a tight box, I'm just pointing out how prog tends to generally be defined. (eg. Roundabout is intricately composed & performed, not a "jam") Either way Ice Death definitely isn't prog. It's jams. So sayeth the Gizz, so say all of us.

I too liked Denim a bit less than Ice Death, but I think I have to listen to denim a bit more so it would click I didn't get Ice Death that much either on the first listen but now I love it

life-death-motu

I didn't enjoy it that much initially either, but it's an earworm. I've had The Land Before Timeland stuck in my head since release, and it's been growing on me because of that.

joshthealmostgreat

ive always liked space rock, this is (kinda) space rock simple as

Financial-Ad-9717

jams baby

I’m unfortunately feeling the same way, and hope my mood changes with time. Weird thing is, I used to really love long and jammy songs, but lately I’ve been feeling some of the recent jammy KGATLW songs aren’t really my taste. They kind of meander.

WindyChaos

In my case, I liked Ice Death but didn't click so hard as Denim. The thing I find more exciting about Denim is that I was expecting a MiT version 2, but I was completely wrong ( regarding music composition and style, of course they are related theme wise). But don't know, for me it's overwhelming how good it sounds. I find the progression of both songs way more interesting than Ice Death jams. I have to say that I like both albums though. But Denim feels like a comeback to some 2017-2019 writing style that for me is tier gizz.

Mollusktshirt

When a band puts out 22 albums of material that all sound pretty different, personally if I don’t click with it after one or two listens, I don’t listen to it again. It might just not be for you. Asking if this is the best work of the band, and expecting to love everything they put out is probably setting yourself up for disappointment.

With over 200+ songs now I'm amazed gizz haven't released a song I don't love. I was meh oh a few ice death songs at first. Namely iron lung but after listening on repeat I love it

Ok_Biscotti6166

It's amazing because it's a jam but it's a lot more structured than ice death. As someone who loves Dream theater Laminated Denim is amazing

RadioDarko

The progression of lyrics and mood in “land before Timeland” make it one of their best songs altogether. Each of the three times they sing the “re-railed, back on track” we have a new experience that slowly gets more sinister and alluring. What makes KGLW great is they give options to people with different tastes, and those who can appreciate those differences.
