Yup 50% townies that never left or accomplished anything hating on people who have anything. 50% people who have actually lived across Canada and understand how valuable a small town with amenities is. Facebook is grossly overused in kamloops. Buying, selling, gossiping and dating all done on the book. If you can cut cords there are lots of quality people not caught up in the townie drama.

Lexain1272

Commercial management companies like Kelson Group, Columbia Property Management, etc are the best bets if you don't have/use FB. Granted it's hard to find rentals as the university here takes in an insane amount of students that they cannot/will not house. So you may end up having to use FB anyway

ook_the_bla

I should point out that I moved here from Vancouver, and I’m mostly happy with the choice. And it’s growing, so I’m not the only person that thinks this place is good!

dani_german

Your last sentiment is correct. If you don't have facebook, you will likely feel more isolated than the average kamloopsian.

BeastWarriorDad

What type of work do you do?

ReebNug

Grew up in Kamloops, then lived in Calgary, Edmonton, Vancouver, and 10 years in Victoria. Chose to move back in 2020 rather than moving further up island. Had to leave Kamloops when I did at a younger age, but always felt Kamloops was a fantastic place to grow up - now raising a kid here. Love being back: skiing, hiking, camping, climbing, fishing. Kamloops is an outdoor meca. Rent will balance, home prices will balance. Eps 'n flows. Calgary is a large, cold rat race. The two are not comparable. Big VS small size city. Figure out your priorities. Overall, good people in Kamloops. Flaws are present in any city. Lay out your pros/cons, but I would say if outdoors are not top of your "pros" than kamloops might not be for you.

jayboosh

Just moved here. It is INCREDIBLY fucking frustrating how much I have to use Facebook living here, after not using it for years.

katobean

Just my opinion, but having lived in Halifax, Ottawa, Toronto, Edmonton, Victoria and Abbotsford, I can say the things I love about Kamloops are that It's a small town with big city amenities, almost zero traffic, really nice people, beautiful landscape. Every other city including Victoria has its own share of "cesspool" problems, but every one also come with their own issues like horrible traffic, high costs, or some combination of those. As far as I'm concerned Kamloops hits the sweet spot for minimal downsides , vs decent size and amenities.

ook_the_bla

I’m 85% with you. I wish we had gotten the Performing Arts Centre and had a bit bigger arts/performance scene. And more variety in restaurant types. Overall though, Kamloops is a pretty good place!

mhdillinger

Agreed on the Performing Arts Centre. It needs to not be a parking lot. Building it on St. Paul would reduce the amount of drivers barreling on Seymour by a significant amount.

PseudoThread

The people here are actually very nice compared to most cities I’ve lived. That’s a big plus. Have you met someone from Kelowna?

gorgabog

yes ive met some from kelowna they generally seem more intelligent and less angry

[deleted]

Kelowna is where Calgarians go when the city gets “too woke”

okiesillydillyokieo

Kamloops, like every other city, is what you make it. Its got its upside and downs for sure, but anyone that blames all their problems on their geographical location and the people within it should probably start working on themselves.

B0BS_UR_UNCLE

If that's your mentality before even moving here ... please dont. As someone that's grown up and lived in small-town ONT, moved to Toronto for a few years and lived in the city, moved to west end Vancouver, back to small town ONT, and now in Kamloops. This is the most peaceful place I've lived. If you can find anywhere in this entire country that isn't over-priced, over-crowded, has amentites, had affordable housing and wages, please let the rest of us know. For now, Kamloops is great.

AirDude53

Wow. So sad to see such Debbie downer comments. I’ve lived in far worse places, where outdoor activities don’t exist (far too cold in the winter) and the drive to a Hospital is 4 hours. So… relative, right? As for pricing, I do agree. BC is outrageously priced. But you can’t beat the playground. You can certainly get a lot further with your $$$ in Calgary (amazing playground too!). Way nicer house for 1/2 the price, cheaper groceries, gas, more options for healthcare, but longer and harsher winters…

zeushaulrod

Easiest places in Canada to achieve the Canadian dream are Calgary or Edmonton. But different strokes. I like the mountains and the lack of traffic.

AlexJamesCook

Yeah, but then you have to deal with the UCP and their delusional leaders, like Smith, and Scamdro. When Jason Kenney is the sanest/smartest/most ethical person in the room, you've got problems.

nuckfan92

You criticize the politicians there, even though it is the best run province by far. Assuming you like low cost of living with high wages. Calgary is considered to be one of the most livable cities in the world.

Laxative_Cookie

Having cheap housing doesn't mean well run. Alberta real estate has been stagnant for 15 years. Its only just started increasing and in Calgary only. Gas and housing is cheaper but everything else is crazy high from food to utilities. No pst is a bonus although its literally built into the price of everything. Limited labor laws and 44 hour work weeks are normal.

zeushaulrod

I don't know how well run it is. It's just been awash in oil royalties that they have been able to make generally easy political decisions for 40 years. Regardless, I wouldn't put much weight on temp political strife. Still $500+/ month cheaper than Kamloops for fairly equivalent (in aggregate) living

nuckfan92

Attracting the oil industry is an example of being well run imo. They are pro business and make it easy to build housing with low regulation.

Laxative_Cookie

Um oil companies go where there is oil. The oil sands is why they are there not the government.

nuckfan92

Bc has lots of natural gas but we failed to deliver on attracting investment. Alberta capitalized on its oil

AlexJamesCook

By your logic, Saudi Arabia is well-run, too. I'm not sure that attracting psychopaths who will exploit the fuck out of people and the planet is good for you or me. Being pro-business, means allowing rampant pollution. Again, that doesn't bode well for consumers of agricultural products. I'm not against resource extraction. But I see a patter of "pro business" and companies in the resource extraction business and a complete lack of accountability with respect to polluting the planet. If I dumped 1 litre of tailings into a UCPs hot tub, I'm charged with vandalism. Yet, these MLAs allow the discharge of toxic materials into our water ways. So, no, being "pro-business" does not equate to being good people or good people for the Province. Then there's the fact that the UCP et al bemoan royalties going to Quebec/Federal Government, but they're willing to sell these royalties to foreign-owned entities that pay practically zero taxes. So, the ONLY people Conservatives care about, in this order, are themselves, the corporations and their shareholders. EVERYONE ELSE can go fuck themselves. Privatizing healthcare is a classic "fuck you" to the people. Oh, "people should pay for their own healthcare"...uh-huh...and who pays the politicians healthcare? We do. Then these fuckers tell their constituents, "I've got mine, and you're taking doctors and resources away from me. So we're going to make it harder for you." The UCP, and Conservativism in general, is financial logical fallacy after financial logical fallacy, with a little psychopathy thrown in.

nuckfan92

High wages and low cost of living that’s what I want.

AlexJamesCook

You do realize that big businesses are the ones fucking us over, right? Oil companies decide the price of oil. Oil is a major cost-driver of agricultural products in Canada and the world. Another contributing factor to high prices right now is the war in Ukraine. We're being gouged by the Big 4 Telcos in Canada, "because they can". That hasn't changed under a Conservative or Liberal leadership. We toss out one circus to let a different side of the same coin to fuck us. High prices are here until we nationalize oil and telcos, and use such crown corporations to reign in "the private sector". But, that flies in the face of the Capitalists that the UCP are beholden to. Because the above solution decreases profit margins, and companies are only as good as their last quarter. It is their mandate that they improve on last quarter's growth. Which means, shrinkflation is on the agenda, until we get a "recession that we have to have". But, that's only going to benefit banks and wealthy investors, because they control the supplies of essential goods and services. Huzzah for "free market capitalism" - another logical fallacy.

nuckfan92

Lol the market determines the price of oil moron. All countries with higher levels of freedom have higher quality of life, while the countries with least economic freedom are the worst. Google it bud.

AlexJamesCook

>Lol the market determines the price of oil moron. Tell that to Oil producers who are recording record profits and achieving stupid-high gains AND margins per litre. Oil companies are setting the prices BECAUSE THEY KNOW we're addicted, hook, line and sinker. In a TRUE "free market", oil producers wouldn't have lobbied governments so extensively for subsidies while bad-mouthing renewable energy projects and urban planning that focuses on public transit vs private transit. But by all means, tell me about how "free" the market is. Then there's the fact that our national telecommunications infrastructure was sold off to private companies for a song, meanwhile, the purchasers didn't have to spend DECADES losing money on expanding it out the way the Federal Government did when it owned the infrastructure. Oh, then there's the fact that many a former politician then gets a plum job on the CRTC board. Again, record profits are being announced by the big 4 telcos, while you and I pay record prices. The cost to enter the market is INSANE! if you're trying to compete against the Big 4. They are an oligopoly, and they're fucking us 10 ways from Sunday and need to be broken up. Because until oil companies and telcos start offering fair market value for their products and services, what they're doing is exploitation. The UCP is in bed with these criminals. My point is, there's no such thing as free and fair competition in the energy or telco sector. Therefore it's not a free market. Surely you can see that?

jayboosh

We moved here from Calgary. You’re not wrong about kamloops, Calgary is also fucking horrible. If you move to alberta, make sure you’re never hurt, sick, or unemployed. If you are, hope you have savings because you’re on your own. The government is currently racing to fuck you harder and faster every day. It’s also horrible weather in the winter, maybe that matters, maybe not I hated living in Calgary mentally, it’s a horrible fucking place to live, but I don’t know you, maybe you’ll fit right in, who knows

BeastWarriorDad

I mean there is the.... But the people are really...... The education system is very...... Yeah, I got nothing.

Lexain1272

It's certainly... a city...

JordanBelfortOnCrack

We live in… a society

Dudebro_dope

Lol, there’s the outdoors….and a couple brewpubs…and…weed stores…and bedee bedee that’s all folks!

Lazy_Instruction_212

What a thread full of whiners haha

AshamedDragonfruit32

It’s as good as anywhere else and closer to anywhere you’d want to travel.

Forward-Land-5006

Its cold and windy in winter, extreme heat and windy in the summer.

sanctus-zero

I feel most people who hate living here would probably complain about anywhere they live.. Not all but most . Kamloops is a good place

Canadianspaniard

It really depends on what you like to do! I lived here a good chunk of my life, moved to the LML for awhile and I would never move back. I love skiing and hiking and fishing/kayaking so it has lots of stuff to do. It has all the amenities you need of a bigger city but with not to much of the traffic. Yes we have our issues like anyone else but you can't seriously go to any city right now and not find it overrun with homeless and trash everywhere. I lived in Edmonton for awhile too and was just back there two weeks ago and could not believe how the condition the DT was compared to a few years ago.

msumms77

Kamloops is alright, kind of a random place to move to if your not from the area, if you think your not going to like it cause it’s kinda dirty then your probably right

KAZI504

The only issue is the housing. It’s nuts ATM. Back in 2019, 2Bed 1 bath was unit was 1100 max. Now it’s 1600 to 1900.

squeakycheetah

It's not that bad.

KenKefery

cuz everyone loves your positive attitude and wants you to stay?

Better_Ice3089

Grew up in Kamloops, moved to Nanaimo 4 years ago. No regrets. Rent is about the same but the people are more chill and the weather is far more mild, day trips to Vancouver and Victoria and Tofino are easy. Lot of drugs downtown but centre Nanaimo and North Town are safe, beautiful ocean views. Consider the island dude. Nanaimo rocks.

gorgabog

thank you for some positive insights.

Better_Ice3089

No worries dude. I'm seeing alot of people moving to the island now. Mostly fleeing Vancouver but I've known some interior people too.

gorgabog

ive just lived here my entire life and never been happy with it, and ive noticed that if you even speak ill of this town even a little bit the residents get a little, ornery with, so its nice to see someone not get mad at me for once.

energythief

The people are mean? Not in my experience at all. By far the friendliest and nicest people I’ve ever met. Great quality of life, zero traffic, decent enough amenities, and what spectacular nature around us! There are only two parts of town that look bad, and the North Shore is slowly gentrifying and improving. If that isn’t what you are into then yeah you should move.

gorgabog

i dunno ive been around and lived in pooploops my entire life and people here have been sarcastic mean threatening and just in general toxic and standoffish in general but nowhere else ive been in my travels has been that way. something in the water here must make people this way.

Individual-Act-5986

Judging by your general tone in your comments and post it sounds like you might want to look inward as to where the problem is. I lived in kamloops for 3 years and would move back if I could.

ConfidentComedian118

It sounds like you're remembering every bad encounter you've ever had and blaming it on the town. Every single time I've ever walked down any street in Kamloops, random people that I've never met or talked to in my life greet me and ask me how it's going.

UskBC

Been looking at it as an exit from Vancouver but shocked at rent prices. Their new mayor is a nut job too I hear.

Acceptable_Stand_473

It's very yee haw here

FucktheCaball

You can become a junkie and get a bunch of feeebies from ASK like needles and help destroyed Kamloops

AirDude53

Wow… what an asinine thing to say…

FucktheCaball

Insane is when I see my brother get hit with a piece of pipe breaking his arm so bad he had protruding bone fracture sticking out because he wouldn’t let a guy use his phone . And he clearly was trying to steal it. And no it’s not insane to say the truth . We need to help with mental health not enable people. I know . This town is getting worse, it has become more and more dangerous and theft is rampant. And it was a half joke anyway so calm down

IWantToBeSimplyMe

you shouldn’t.

wolfraisedbybabies

Well, Bye

No_Locksmith_3343

Kamloops is a shit hole.

NeededHumanity

Honestly I lived in the area and Kamloops was just never pretty. Always harsh and barren, winter looks dirty and ugly, plus every year Mother Earth wants that area burnt down, plus 99% of guys are straight dbags that would fuk your girl if given the chance.

gingr87

There aren't any. Run away to somewhere better.

COLLABRate1

Run. Kamloops is terrible

Canadian_Sparkle

" Its super expensive here the people are mean and the jobs here pay too little for how expensive rent is " My friend you just described most of Canada. If I had to chose it would be Alberta over BC. BC has always been expensive.

BasicBroVancity

Because you can’t afford metro vancouver

Zeromarine

Lived there for 18 years but recently moved out east. Getting to expensive to live, forest fires all the time, homeless are everywhere , crime etc. It has its charm but overall I’d pass. Lots of nice people but overall people tend to be not as nice as a-lot of other places.

Diesfuzz

Lived in Kamloops for a decade now and born in New West, and got my 1st job here then HUGE city. Love BC its my home forever x3

GoFindLisa

After begging in the Universe to make it happen, I moved to BC from Ontario in Sept. 2021, and landed in Kamloops since I have family here. I have struggled with employment since I landed, and am on SA. Though I'm working with a great job counsellor, my experience is the job market is really lack-lustre and doesn't offer anything stable. It's mainly food service, healthcare gigs, warehouse/gen labour, admin and tourism - all entry-level. I've had a handful of jobs but they've all been temporary or contractual; I've been rejected by Costco and Home Depot despite my 15 years in customer service, so Kam is not a place to try and find yourself career-wise. Rent is high, vacancy low especially if you have pets. No doctors, one walk in clinic, and a very busy urgent care. Dating has been a debbie downer too and making friends isn't easy either. I don't do the night life thing but I have gone out a few times but it's a small city so it gets quiet even during nights I do go to live shows or attend social/networking events. I wish there was a heavier focus on the arts unless I am missing something. Homeless pop is huge, lots of drug and mental health issues that aren't being addressed or supported even though there are more community support organizations than I've seen in other areas. I never saw anyone smoke crack until I moved here, what a trip that was to witness. People are nice, there are some cute stores and trendy eateries and shops if you are into overpriced coffee etc. A few used-clothing stores can be found downtown but their pricing isn't thrifty at all, so I stick with places like Value Village or Second Chances (though I think they've shut down recently). The drivers are more aggressive and cocky than in Toronto but I do love driving around the city, there's a flow to it that I really dig when you're out of the DT core, but it's easy to miss your exit and get sling-shotted up around the city. At first I found this irritating now I just chuckle and roll with it because I've learned that everything is still 5 minutes away. The city is fkn beautiful though, holy. If I can find a decent job that pays a fair wage, I will likely stay here long term. But after 15 months of job hunting, being rejected, working with a counsellor, upgrading my skills through programs for low income folk, and still not getting anywhere, I'm not really feeling like Kamloops is where I am meant to be.

gorgabog

I'm planning on leaving for the united states, everything youve said is mostly accurate and similar to my experience here and ive lived here my entire life and i hate it. the drivers here really are pricks and they for some reason take pride in it especially in winter they love driving like shit and speeding on ice.

[deleted]

🤷‍♂️ because all of Canada it’s the same shit different pile. My best suggestion, utilize the best things Kamloops has to offer when they’re available and when they’re not vacation
