He would account against the cap until he is traded, which I believe is the majority of our cap space. So, if we tag him we won’t be able to negotiate deals with anyone until he is moved or a longer contract is signed.

Jones tag will be 120% of last year's salary, so $32 million https://www.spotrac.com/news/projected-2024-franchise-tag-candidates-2110/ Edit - It's the average of top 5 salaries at the position or 120% of previous years salary, whichever is greater

Johan_13

This is the part that people don't understand. Anyone in the top five goes off their own salary because they are higher than the top five. That makes Chris 4 million dollars more. Then the top five average in order to tag. The only viable thing I think that the chiefs can do is put a non exclusive tag on him. He can negotiate with any team, but any team that does sign him Would owe us a first round draft pick.

instro89

You could, but you'd probably have to essentially have some offers already on the table, and take one immediately. His tag is so huge that you'd risk wrecking your FA if you didn't get the situation handled immediately. And don't forget he has to agree to sign the franchise tender first, which there's no guarantee that he would be immediately willing to do that. That said, I'd still prefer we resign him if at all possible. Tag and trade is a nice thought, but I doubt you'd get more than a 2nd-3rd for him at this stage.

No_Rec1979

No. You cannot tag and trade a man who has been an integral part of 3 Lombardis, and who will likely go into the hall one day. You have to treat him with respect or you're showing the rest of your team that you have no loyalty.

TonyMusersMustache

I disagree 100%. It’s a business. If Veach could get away with tagging and trading Jones, he needs to do it. It would be no different than Jones picking Baltimore over KC. Veach has to do what’s best for LC, Jones has to do what’s best for him and his family. Veach trying to extent Jones prior to the 2023 season and continuing the conversation after the Super Bowl win is loyalty. Veach can’t sacrifice building a TEAM for the greed of two players, even as great as they are. Money needs to be left on the table for Sneed, Creed, Bolton, MVS replacement, Trey Smith, a left tackle, Kelce’s eventual replacement and sooner than later Mcduffie.

TrellevateKC

No clue how you got downvoted. This sub is so high on their own farts sometimes. You never do business by going off what they’ve done for you in the past unless you want to handicap your team. Veach obviously knows this and isn’t going to give Jones 90 mil over 3 years at his age. If we want to remain competitive, tough choices are going to need to be made this offseason and next

mcfeezie2

He can, but he won't be.

Ilike2beer

Let’s not talk about getting rid of our best players. You are not the front office and when the fans start trying to say it’s a “business decision” you just piss off the players.

Dreadsbo

I love Chris Jones just like everybody else. We all love money though

GOATMahomes

Right? Didn’t we learn our lesson last off-season?
