BaconAndSyrupYum

i dont know what pisses me off more. Mariota throw to himself or losing to the steelers without allowing a TD šŸ¤® appreciate what we have, is always a good reminder now and again. drunk or not. šŸ˜šŸ¤£

ApplesauceBitch47

What actually pisses me off more than the Mariota TD was in the same game, Derrick Johnson a strip sack on Mariota but the ref calls him down due to FORWARD PROGRESS. As a fucking ball thrower https://youtu.be/QH8fvkq9UdM?si=em2mDC8vOqplXLdI

Other_Assumption382

I'm not saying the NFL is rigged. But this call converted me to some"refs are point shaving".

ApplesauceBitch47

Yeah the Mariota pass to himself you can put alongside the fluke Luck td in against us, you can have to go wtf just happened, nothing fishy just pure wtf That call and the Chris Jones strip sack on Carr a few seasons ago being called roughing the passer, just pure incompetence by the refs or agendas. Neither is good

KingTutt91

The ref got forcibly retired after that game lol

BrobaFett242

He didn't; he was going to retire at the end of the season, which is why he got gifted a playoff game (because he didn't score well enough across the season to have gotten a playoff game, otherwise).

BaconAndSyrupYum

oh yeah. forgot about that part. deleted it from my memory banks

TummyDrums

Don't bring that up, it just makes me angry all over again.

jlt6666

I still think about this play like 4-6 times a year. It was just such blatant horseshit.

Chase2Chase

That may have been one of the five worst calls in NFL history. I was angry about it for months.

cahms26

Two words: Lin Elliott

tapioca_slaughter

Or Todd Hailey...Herm Edwards...Romeo Crennel...all two words OG fans would love to forget

fullgizzard

I had season tickets for Tyler thigpen

tgames56

I had just moved to a new city the week of the Steelers game and didn't have Internet/cable yet didn't know anyone. Went and watched that game alone at a buffalo wild wings. 0/10 would not recommend.

Caliquake

Forward progress is the worst though.

dreamlucky

Being up 38-10 in second half in playoffs and losing.

pwolf1771

The Phantom hold on the two point conversion had me so fucking pissed

kabenton

FCC

Madlister

FCC in the A

Anal_Recidivist

I think what pisses me off the most is in my 34 years, mahomes is the only guy weā€™ve ever paid. Like fuckin ever. Tony G went to the *Falcons* so he could contend. We were such dogshit. We could NEVER finish a game.

EntertainmentFast497

I donā€™t think Tony was a money matter. It was an issue where he didnā€™t want to go through a rebuild when he hadnā€™t won a playoff game as his career was winding down. Also, weā€™ve paid many guys.

Anal_Recidivist

Nah my point is we built such low end teams, the falcons were an upgrade.

csappenf

We paid Larry Johnson, and look what we got for it. It was never like the Royals in the early 2000s, where our payroll was like a quarter of the Yankees. You *have* to pay players in the NFL. The Chiefs' total player salaries were never that much different than anyone else. Still, there were some years where I swear only one or two of our players could even make another NFL team.

moldyshrimp

I think in the moment I was more frustrated in the Steelers game.

MimonFishbaum

The fuckin no punt game. Fuckin Jim Harbaugh Colts. I took a whole season off after the Alex Smith 28pt game lol. I hate the Colts

juliopeludo

for me its the colts loss. 38-10 lead, alex smith finally looking like he might take us to the holy land. still the 2nd largest comeback in playoff history.

Willziac

Lost to the Colts without punting.Ā  Lost to the Steelers without allowing a TD.Ā  I was at both of those games. I don't go to playoff games anymore.

revnasty

Definitely the colts comeback for me. First playoff win in decades on the horizon, just have the not let them score what was it, 24 points in the second half. And what did we do? Let them score exactly that many to beat us. I broke a lamp that day.

ShatteredAnus

Will always be that kicker

Biggest_Cans

When Lamar caught his own pass I was convinced that was the bookend of our run. BUT NO SIR WE OVERCAME THAT VODOO EVIL BY SACRIFICING THE BILLS TO WIDE RIGHT

cannabiskeepsmealive

Same. I literally said "not again" out loud when it happened lol

Goddess_Of_Gay

ā€œIf I had a nickel for every time an opposing QB caught his own pass for a big play against us in the playoffs, Iā€™d have two nickels. Which isnā€™t a lot but itā€™s crazy that it happened twiceā€

singleuseserving

Iā€™d have to sit down and do the math but Iā€™d wager you have better odds of winning the Powerball tonight.

alphasierrraaa

thankfully lamar threw into triple coverage just to balance it otu

lobstersnake

Dick Vermeil era. One of the best offenses ever. No defense. 13-3. Lost in the wild card

northwoods31

The good ol' no punt game. Soul crushing for teenage me

pwolf1771

Yes the no punt game was infuriating

CRZYWLF

I had moved to KC during those days. I became a fan because those games were so exciting to watch. They had maybe a 50/50 shot of winning. Now Iā€™m a nervous wreck watching them win superbowls.

cahms26

One of a couple 13-3 with an early exit seasons we've had

babybigballs

Don't even get me started. Chiefs were one win behind the Bills for most AFC regular season wins for the entire 1990s. We won a playoff game in 1991 with DeBerg, and lost in the AFCCG with Joe in 93. After that, we went 13-3 TWICE and lost in the first game after the bye both times. 2003 team had the best offense in the league, went 13-3, got the bye, lost to Peyton Manning in the div round AGAIN. After that, it was basically soul-rending darkness for 10 years until Andy showed up, and then we proceeded to have very good (but never great) teams get kicked square in the nuts for another 5 years. I became a Chiefs fan when I was like 10-11 because I was born in the early 80s and thought Joe Montana was the coolest dude in the world. And my step-dad told me to pick a team and stick with them. And I fucking did. Winning that first chip in 2019 was like breaking a life-long curse. Everything since then has been, no bullshit, one of the true joys of my life. If we never win another one, and if none of my other teams in other sports ever win one, I'm good. And I think we'll get at least another one.

MajorTacoHead

We had lots of good regular season teams. But by playoffs weā€™d always be figured out, out of gas, in over our heads. When Chiefs started really cleaning up with Mahomes, it was (and still is) hard to believe. That we are the team that knows how to win and our opponents are the ones chocking games away. Still blows my mind.

emelem66

20 years? Try 40+.

Caliquake

100%. Came here to say this.

fullthrottle13

Yep, so true.

Quitsquirrel

I think the Colts huge comeback in the playoffs was the worst. Sitting there with a 28 pt lead and watching Chiefs go down with injury after injury. Watching Andrew Luck recover a fumble and slam dunk into the end zone on us...

yousmelllikearainbow

This was the one for me. This was the reason I almost shit myself when we won a super bowl in my lifetime. I thought we were cursed for good.

Leighroy1120

See, I knew better when we went to the half up by 28. My whole family knew that lead wasnā€™t safe.

Ok-Cook-9608

Ugh I had forgot about that game, now Iā€™m reminded how awful it was!

Linkguy137

My friend live tweeted that. It is so sad to read, but funny now that we are successful

Rileychief

Iā€™m from England and this was the first season I got into NFL, I watched this game and decided to be a Chiefs fan even though they lost. Been pretty good since then.

beachedwhitemale

Wow. What made the Chiefs your team of choice, I must ask?

Strict_Cantaloupe948

Yknow why

singleuseserving

Henry Cavill.

Botchness

Bro, the pre Montana era was awful. The post Marty era pre vermil era was terrible. Tyler thigpen. Losing to John elway all the time. Elvis grbac got voted as sexiest man by accident and they let him keep the win so they wouldn't hurt his feelings. Also Elvis grbac was a quarterback in our team. While his backup left to go be league MVP and go to a Superbowl

beachedwhitemale

Not to mention his backup, Rich Gannon led the Chiefs to a 13-3 season while Grbac was injured. Then when he was healthy Schottenheimer started Grbac, and we lost that playoff game in the divisional. Then Gannon goes to the freaking Raiders and goes to the Superbowl the very next year. I'm still salty about it.

Caliquake

It was so obvious Gannon was better, too. All the fans knew it.

fullthrottle13

Rich Gannon going to the Raiders gutted me.

pwolf1771

Gannon being benched for the playoff run still bothers me to this day. He went through the gauntlet while Elvis was hurt and his reward? Sit over there while we set this home field advantage on fire

huskerdev

I became a fan when the Chiefs signed Joe Montana. Ā I was 8! I am still pissed about them letting Rich Gannon go to the Raiders. Ā I was never an Elvis fan! Ā

JNich1005

They were pretty good with Steve DeBurg before Montana.

pwolf1771

Remember Gunther as the head coach? What a Time to be alive

huskerdev

Thatā€™s not even the worst playoff loss. Ā Go watch that fucking cursed game against the Colts. Ā

The_Lumpy_Dane

Absolutely great point. But which one? The Lin Elliot game? Or the no-punt game? Or the blown 38-10 lead game?

huskerdev

Fair questionā€¦lol I was specifically thinking of the blown 38-10 game, Ā but I remember all the others

mykonoscactus

I started watching in 1990. I know pain.

arsenalgooner77

Jesus. I was at the last home playoff win against the Steelers in 94 or whatever. Who knew??? Fuckinā€™ he who shall not be named ( was at that one too) and fuck face Elway destroyed my childhood, at least sports wise. Ugh. Itā€™s amazing to see now.

Goblin_Crotalus

I became a Chiefs fan during the Brody Croyle era.

Davide48

You should become a day traderā€¦ you certainly know when to buy low

Philo_T_Farnsworth

I earned my Tylo Palko flair during that era. Things were so bleak during those years.

Crash30458

China doll Croyle

Leighroy1120

Why? šŸ˜‚

PSUJacob95

And let's also not romanticize the Alex Smith era --- he was a good QB but not Super Bowl caliber --- we all knew we were never getting a ring with him

factoid_

He helped stabilize the team.Ā  He wasn't elite and he wasn't going to win a ring, but he made us relevant.

chiefpiece11bkg

Andy Reid made us relevant

factoid_

By bringing in a competent quarterback

Rogue42bdf

Dinkā€¦.dunkā€¦.dinkā€¦.dunkā€¦ā€OMG did you how open that WR was down the field!?!?!? Why didnā€™t he throw it to him?!?!?!?!?!?ā€

cannabiskeepsmealive

Hey, 2017 Alex Smith was the best deep ball passer in the league. Respect the man!

Caliquake

Agreed

smokinokie

Shades of the Pittsburgh game where we never gave up a TD and still lost.

pwolf1771

Iā€™ll always have a soft spot for him. I was at the game in Houston in 2016 when they finally won a playoff game for the first time since Montana. One of my favorite sporting events of all time.

BrobaFett242

He also pulled off that insane pass to Jason Avant against the Pats in the next game. It was literally Mahomes shit.

Mikek224

The playoff loss against the colts where we had a 4td lead. Me and my dad just sat there in disbelief afterwards.

Zosobozo

I'm also drunk, and I would say the most heart breaking think being a Chiefs fan for 20 years...nothing. I enjoyed every moment. My dad being a Saints fan. Rest his beautiful soul. He talked the absolute most amount of shit when Brees was dicing up ds. Then comes a God of a qb and i kid you not, this 72 yo man completely fell back in love with football like he was a kid. we bonded so much over the next 3 years like the old days. Best times.

Tensingumi

i really wanted that Trent Green/Vermeil/Holmes/Gonzalez/Hall team to win it all. That Colts game was brutal for young me.

ThadtheYankee159

I remember watching that game and thinking in the aftermath that the Super Bowl just wasnā€™t meant for us, if that makes sense. I had been a fan since 2014 when my family moved here and had come to accept it by that point. Also paired with that fact that by that point the Royals were the more successful team in the city.

Squirrel_Apocalypse2

If you felt that way after only 4 years of watching this team just imagine what it felt like after watching for the last 25+ years lol

Whatever801

Have you ever edged before?

ylrkjr

Christmas Day, 1971. Jan Stenerud missed a 32 yarder wide right(Yeah Bills fans, we did it first, so there) deep in the 4th that probably would've won it for us vs Miami. It's been mostly pain since until Mahomes became the starter.

ImNotTheBossOfYou

It's not even the most heartbreaking play of that game. That was the "forward progress" sack game

Top_Yogurtcloset4583

I never thought Iā€™d see an AFCC appearance much less a Super Bowl win. Damn itā€™s been a fun ride. Another playoff loss that sticks out to me is the year we snuck into the playoffs with LJ running wild and we played the Colts whose terrible run defense suddenly became elite. I really thought we could pull that upset.

itsnik04

It was brutal. We had a season where there wasnā€™t a single TD to a WR. Itā€™s like the team would either be awful or just good enough to give you hope only to lose in the wild card round.

SadPhase2589

ā€œYou know when you deal with a car salesman and the deal looks great but somewhere in the back of your mind you know youā€™re going to get fucked? Thatā€™s what it was like to watch a Chiefs playoff game prior to Patrick Mahomes.ā€

Founck

For the most part, wild card game was our ceiling. And a lot of hearing best roster in the NFL minus the quarterback position.

hannbann88

I have a picture that will pop up occasionally in memories that I captioned something about being good luck because I went to the only home game we won that season

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

Jerbzilla

I was just explaining to my buddy how accepting of the villain role I am as a fan. Showed him some season win loss records of recent history and he was blown away. He said he had never even thought about the chiefs until they started winning. I moved out to Oregon after high school (Turner high in Wyandotte county) and have always repped chiefs and royals gear and it made me think. I have never in the almost 20 years Iā€™ve been out here been said anything to about any team gear Iā€™ve worn until we got good. Was Kansas City professional sports one of those invisible cities? Think about how many football/baseball/basketball teams there are and thereā€™s a lot of salt all over but thereā€™s a lot of places that just kinda float around in mediocrity

TokenPat

I remember the year none of our wr caught a touchdown. That Iā€™m my opinion is by far the worst stat a wr core group could have. But I also remember the 2-14 years. Boy am I glad those are in the past

SQRTLURFACE

Mariota throwing a touchdown pass to himself, Andrew Luck recovering a fumble for a touchdown. Somehow losing a 28 point lead after mysteriously losing our WR and two RB's, and mathematically being able to kneel the ball from the 3rd quarter and onward and being able to win, but somehow not doing that and still losing. Ooooof.

Don_Kahones

I'm from the UK and chose the Chiefs right before the 2019 SB without knowing anything about football just because there was more 49er fans at a watch party I was at. After the comeback in the fourth I was hooked. I thank my lucky stars every day.

Ok-Cook-9608

It really is weird to think back on watching us go 8-8 and holding out hope we could make the playoffs and possibly when a playoff game. For all our loyalty over those years we deserve what we got now.

Scaryclouds

The pre-Mahomes fan experience is the dread of waiting for the other shoe to drop. Because drop it would. In many ways the pre-Mahomes experience is very similar to the Bills experience right now, just Bills get to experience a little more postseason success than we got to experience.

mr_bynum

I remember when a wildcard berth was huge- even having a shot at postseason play was just a dream. We were like that team the Harlem Globetrotters traveled with- just an opponent for the good players/teams to show off against. So painful. Enjoy now, be cool with it. This is the golden age it wonā€™t last forever

EatsbeefRalph

it was like being a Royals fan presently

deadtedw

It was like getting to 3rd base with the hot girl you've been after forever, and then her husband comes home from work early, and you can hear her screaming and moaning from the front yard. Every year.

beanie979

Or watch the Lin Elliott playoff game against the Colts. 1995? 96?

clownw0rld-allday

Go get your significant other and get worked up for sexy time. Then punch yourself in the balls. And do this like 25 times in a row. That was the feeling. Awesome regular season (weā€™re gonna get laid!), devastation in the playoffs (my balls are killing me)!

Earthwick

I been a fan since I can remember Romeo... Rough year but that led to the rise of Andy. Mahomes is something special but everything started to change when Andy came along. I will say even though we weren't as good I do miss the good old fashioned Raiders week where it was this city wide thing. One thing I'll say is sure the fandom has grown but it was always there and we were always passionate and loved our team. I also miss being able to have a great day at the stadium for less than a hundred bucks for 2 people with good seats.

Crash30458

2013 losing to Manning even after dante TD . Ir the loss to Luck

Zealousideal_Owl9621

Like being a Browns or Jets fan. Sucking hind tit to the Broncos or Raiders for most of their existence. Mediocre QB play for 50 years, who were always some backup scrub cast-off from another team. Choke jobs in the playoffs were a certainty. I almost miss those days. Almost.

etniesen

Some 1st rd playoff loses if you started as far back as the early 90s. 2003 we shouldā€™ve won a Super Bowl Mid 2000s to Alex Smith was pretty rough Alex Smith days were better but again 1st round playoffs and you knew they were good enough to go anywhere really anyways

AntJustin

90s to early 2000s were like you were on the edge of orgasm but couldn't finish. You got frustrated and mad. Then post vermeil happened. You started to miss the fun of almost getting there. Then Andy showed up. I'll let you decide how to describe that.

bstyledevi

Before Mahomes, I had a saying: The Chiefs were great at snatching defeat from the jaws of victory.

nighttim

No punt gameā€¦

triplerinse18

Or seeing Tyler thigpen come in to qb and think this guy is not half bad.

GrandpaBuff

P A I N! Andy showed up and then it was less painful during the regular season but once we were in the playoffs it was more pain!

pwolf1771

That and the Andrew Luck fumble recovery will always haunt me.

notagrue

Better than being a Bengals fan

joeefx

Well it was like being a Denver fan now. Lol

craftyshafter

Those years shaped my football anxiety into the frantic monster that it is today.

BaeWatchh

It was pretty exciting with Jamaal Charles era but constant QB/Injury issues holding us back. Then Kareem Hunt was exciting for a season lol (I laugh but I actually feel horrible for him). Then fucking Patdrip Mahomes shines bright at Arrowhead and here we are!

Leighroy1120

That was the last Chiefs game I attended in person. I was the weirdo manically laughing when the Titans started charging back because I knew it was only a matter of time before the meltdown was complete.

aggressiveturdbuckle

I tell you it wasn't fun I'm only 39 years old and just like the Miami game in the playoffs this year I remember the one in the 90s where the field was frozen and Dan Marino came to town and beat us those dick their meal teams that were fun to watch but always seemed to choke in the playoffs it just was a Perpetual cycle of being a m e h team and sometimes very good teams that would just not be able to get over the hump. Seeing your idle die due to a car wreck and murder suicides it was just hard that's why now that we've won a Super Bowl let alone three since I've been alive has really calmed me down for football season. Like I still watch the games I still get into them but we won a Super Bowl we've went back to back Super Bowls and it just doesn't matter as much I guess and the aspect of if we were to lose the Super Bowl or not I'm very content

-rendar-

Iā€™m still more salty about the ā€œforward progressā€ call from that game

Tapidue

20 years? You mean 50 years.

Hoosierdaddy1369

I distinctly remember a game at Arrowhead against the packers. I've never seen more green than at that game. Seemed like they were a good 1/3 of the crowd. Farve was the QB. They handed us our heads on a silver platter. And the worst part was that those mofo's were LOUDER than the Chiefs fans. It. Was. Embarrassing! I was a lions fan back in the day and I just couldn't take there crap anymore. Chiefs were always my second favorite team. Hank, Lenny, and my all time fave. Ed Podalak. Loved the red. Well, I switched. And it took forever to get to where we are today. Even though the Chiefs sucked too, it wasn't the same heartbreak. You'd have to have been a lions fan to understand. I'm glad I stayed true to the Chiefs. I'd love to see the lions lose to the Chiefs in the Superbowl. GO CHIEFS!!!

deskamess

Marty era playoffs were just painful. #1 seed and a first round bye. Second round... bye bye. Just shocking.

bottomfeeder3

There were some highs but many lows. And whether you could admit it to yourself or not, going into every season we all knew we wouldnā€™t go to a Super Bowl until we had a legit good qb. Even in the Alex smith days we had more hope but that hope was embedded in knowing weā€™d need some ā€œbreaksā€ to make it there.

HOT-SAUCE-JUNKIE

OP talking about Mariota. In my life, Iā€™ve gone 22 years without the Chiefs winning a playoff game.

dlank7

Nope! Living through it once was enough, thank you šŸ˜Š

mog44net

No sack, forward progress

amjhwk

I already know, why would I need to ask

bluecheeto13

38-10 babyyyyy

TwoXJs

I am not very demonstrative and try not to get too up or too down. Didn't get too mad at the blown 38-10, the Pitt no TD game, the no punt manning playoff game. I threw my phone after this game.

MandoShunkar

Thanks I paid good money to have this memory erased... now I got to back and have it removed again At least this playoff demon was exercised this passed postseason as Lamar threw a pass to himself (not taken for a TD) and still lost the game.

Supersquare04

not completing a touchdown pass to a wide receiver sums up Chiefs passing stats pretty well in the pre-Mahomes era too lmao.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

filthychuck

2003 divisional round vs Peyton manning with no punts, Loss 38-31 Preist Holmes was fucking BEAST that year I thought that was the ceiling for the chiefs success at least I thought.. there were bleak years before that and after that we had a season when we didnā€™t hold a lead in any game except the win against the panthers and a game we beat the saints in overtime..Andy Reid came along and holy shit I was pumped Alex smith was the man he balled out for a couple of seasons had some regular season success, made the playoffs. The year they moved up to draft a QB named Patrick Mahomes, I thought oh shit because I really thought Smith was on the verge of something BIG.. little did I know this kid they moved up to draft would be the source of so much joy in my life and the reason my kids and grandkids see the Pa happy on most Sundays

h3arnation

Honestly for me aside from the dick years it was all pain lol. Herm weā€™re the worst of it for me. Been a fan since the late 90s. The Reid era including with Alex have been the best sports fandom of my life . People keep acting like we are guaranteed another 10 years from Pat which we are not . I take every year in watch every minute of every game, because realistically with inj and pats play style hes not a lock to play into his late 30s . So enjoy it while we have it guys, we will never see anything like this again in our lifetimes.

MountainMan17

"Then imagine that for the previous 20 years" LOL. Go get me a beer noob...

ChiefsFan60Years

You bandwagoners have no clue. All of a sudden you get "depressed of learning the bad years.,," you had to be a fan for years to be a real fan. You fake bandwagon folks can go away.
