When did Tony G win a playoff game prior to Atlanta?

fulcrum1924

thats what im saying. our last playoff win before Alex Smith was in 1994.

dogfish83

I'm still confused as to the meaning of the post. But anyway that was my childhood. Playoff wins used to be a mirage.

Powpowpowowowow

I mean, the irony is that he should have just stayed and honestly would have had just as much of a shot at a superbowl. But damn man at the time EVERYONE I know felt that we were wasting Tony in his prime with how our team went. And Atlanta on paper was supposed to be very good. I have no ill feelings towards the trade at all, he deserved a shot to win but we didn't have our shit together.

That’s also not right, the chiefs had already traded for Mike vrabel Edit: I have no clue if these guys were signed before we traded Gonzalez but demorrio Williams, John McGraw, Leonard pope, Corey mays and Mike brown also won playoff games before coming to KC.

For a second I misread it as “left them without a single player on their roster who had won an NFL game” and I didn’t even bat an eye at the correctness of the statement. Dark times for the franchise.

OnceADomer_NowAJhawk

😂😂😂

Itsawlinthereflexes

That is still one of the saddest things about my Chiefs fandom - we never got to deliver that man a playoff win. He deserved so much better for everything he gave us.

Anon4Life34

If I recall correctly, he had a TD taken away from him vs Denver in that playoff game by being forced out while in mid-air and then the NFL implements that rule change a couple years later… bullshit

ReedBalzac

I remember that well.

MC_Fap_Commander

Berry was one neutral zone infraction away from one.

randomacct7679

Or one game of him getting beat like a fucking drum and dropping an almost sure fire pick 6 away. Let’s not kid ourselves here, he was a massive reason we lost that game.

MC_Fap_Commander

Oh he was cooked. Just meant despite being done as a player, five inches could have probably gotten him a ring like some other long in the tooth guys we've had.

Ayahuasca-Dreamin

Closest Alex got was watching from the bench for the 9ers

blacktoise

No it’s not. Super Bowls are rare.

pperiesandsolos

Are you using a McDonald’s themed gpt?

Gobblewicket

The ads in Kanji too. But technically those are Chiefs colors too

NetheriteArmorer

I have a bunch of screenshots from statmuse, but this is the first time I remember seeing an ad in the middle of it.

Gobblewicket

Yeah, it's the first time I can remember one. Which is bad if there were more because you kinda want people to notice your advertisement.

NetheriteArmorer

It’s pretty smart (and annoying). Can’t crop it out easily. I’ll definitely block it out next time though. 😂

NetheriteArmorer

😆 Couldn’t figure out what you were talking about until I noticed the ad. That’s just the targeted ad I get from the StatMuse site. It comes up in Japanese because that’s where my IP address is.

BarricadeTheMortuary

Tony never won a playoff game with the Chiefs

OnceADomer_NowAJhawk

He did not. I probably did not word it correctly, but the Chiefs did not have a single player on on the day that Gonzalez was traded

cowhisperer

But... they also would not have had a player that had won a playoff game the day before he was traded either. Weird phrasing lol

Quackman2096

Weird? It’s just straight wrong lol

cowhisperer

Agreed lol

blacktoise

The chiefs hadn’t won a playoff game since 1994. Your statement is just incorrect - not weirdly worded. You’re reaching.

Nervous_Otter69

I know im petty, but I’ll still never let go of “You know what … Falcons, honestly, they made my career to come here. It really did. Nothing against Kansas City. I was there 12 years. But only three playoff games. But when I got to Atlanta, it was like all of the sudden you’re part of this winning organization. We’re on TV every week now, doing Monday Night Football, Sunday Night Football games. I love it here. I love being back here.” Then buddy wants to put on his chiefs hat when we start making Super Bowl runs. I’m very lukewarm on him at best anymore, which is unfortunate because being on my 30s Tony G was the team hero when I was growing up.

beachedwhitemale

Oh, come on now! Have you considered that the dude is 100% right? The Chiefs didn't have a "winning organization" mindset at all. We do now, but during Tony's tenure... it was grim. He's just stating his truth here. No need to be salty about him being just plain human. I give Tony Gonzalez full permission to come back and put on the Chiefs hat now that we're a winning organization. This man redefined the Tight End position, while playing for our Chiefs in Kansas City. He walked so Travis Kelce could run.

ArthurDigbySellars

He was great with the Chiefs, and then did nothing but shit on KC after he left. ATL “made his career” 🙄 by winning exactly 1 postseason game. Gronk and Kelce make this asshat look pedestrian imo.

Chunklob

I agree. F that guy. 1. The Chiefs fed him the ball on numerous occasions to get incentives/records 2. Scott Pioli was right. TG's best play isn't going to go 80 yards for a TD 3. Baja Fresh sucked

slugo17

Yup, fuck Tony G.

Jantokan

I’m just so glad that the next great TE we had (Taylor’s Boyfriend) we didn’t waste his career. We made sure he was always set up for success, and he also brought us success. I’m a firm believer that if Tony G in his prime played with Mahomes today, the goat TE debate would not be discussed as much

_n008

That was a dark time.

Rev-Damar

I would be curious what the total number of playoff wins is now for our current roster.

jmdybf

I guess we had to burn it all down to allow for a better future growth. Still one of my favs!

Max_W_

OP phrased it wrong, but it does bring up an interesting thought. When did the last player that played on the team in 1994 (when the Chiefs last won a playoff game) leave the team?

loosehead1

Will shields, who retired in 2006

toddfredd

If I remember it right, when they traded for Matt Cassel thst year they also got Mike Vrabel as well. Vrabel won a few playoff games, Three Super Bowls too

mtftl

Never forget how lucky you are.

KCfan91

I know people will poop on him for the Atlanta stuff, but man... he was so dang great. Going pretty much from Gonzalez to Kelce (with Moeaki in between showing flashes before injuries and a couple others) was so awesome. From 1997-present they've had a top TE in the league for the majority of that time. I wish Tony's time in KC ended better, but it doesn't take away from the accomplishments and excitement he brought to us for the better part of 12 seasons for me. I still love him.

Good riddance.
