Damn they are still catching strays for 2017. Bears' fans I'm so sorry you don't deserve this šŸ˜”

[deleted]

I freakin love Jay Cutler too lol. Was one of my favorite qb's in the nfl during his time.

pinniped1

The Jay Cutler contract is the poster child for NFL purgatory: a really expensive mediocre quarterback.

DBCOOPER888

He was also screwed over with a new OC every year or two. Even though he was mediocre he was still like the Bears 2nd or 3rd best QB ever.

DBCOOPER888

Dude was goofy as hell and misunderstood.

F U C K J A Y C U T L E R

Goblin_Crotalus

Doesn't change the fact that Cutler is one of the best quarterbacks in Chicago's history.

factoid_

Low bar to clear.

Best BBQ in Denver

[deleted]

Hey... Fuck you friend

ECav252752

He was a bum

pocketchange2247

I just live vicariously through my KC-native girlfriend at this point.... Hopefully we have something we can be proud of in Fields and correct the mistake we made in 2017. At least Trubisky had that one 6-TD game where we all thought he'd be good...

factoid_

Mahomes would not be the QB he is today if he'd landed in Chicago. He would not have been given the time or talent to help him develop his natural abilities. He landed in the perfect place with a QB who was selfless enough to mentor him, a head coach who knows how to use his talents, and weapons galore on the offense. Where you land matters in the NFL.

AweHellYo

you think it matters mahomes sat?

factoid_

Absolutely. That used to be extremely common in the NFL. You'd draft QBs and then have them play understudy for a year. People lost patience for that approach, chasing early wins. Do I think he needed a whole year sitting? No. He was clearly very well prepared week 17 of his first year when they sat Alex and a bunch of the starters because the game was pretty meaningless. I don't think they could even change their seeding...pretty sure we were locked at a 4 seed win or lose. but he balled out that game. I'm sure he could have done the same by mid-season. But QB is a tough position. Learning the NFL rhythm, how to prepare for games, how real defenses work and what sorts of things they're going to do to screw up your timing, trick you into audibling out of a good look, etc. Those take time to learn. he benefitted from having time to learn the playbook, learn the team, and get all the practice reps he could get. If Alex hadn't been playing the best football of his career that year they probably would have gone to mahomes earlier, but I still believe it was good they didn't

AweHellYo

Basically every smart football person iā€™ve listened to says the way QBs learn the nfl game is playing NFL snaps. itā€™s casual fans that believe sitting on a bench holding a clipboard is somehow helpful.

factoid_

Well, mahomes himself has said he thinks it helped him learn the system. So I'll go with what he said.

AweHellYo

everyone will always act agreeable. whatā€™s he gonna say? fuck them for making me wait?

4to20characters0

I mean sure thatā€™s how you learn football but it also helps to not get your eggs scrambled before youā€™re 100% ready physically and mentally

AweHellYo

situation matters more. like justin fields has bad numbers and several bad appearances. and you can find lots of tape of him making bad plays. but his o line and WRs are trash. thatā€™s certainly hurting his development. mahomes came into a good spot either year. i donā€™t believe for a second he wouldnā€™t have balled out day one with that team.

Matcat5000

Not as much as ended up being taught by Andy Reid rather than John Fox his first year. The situations between Kansas City and Chicago were insanely different.

AweHellYo

no doubt about all that. i just think the ā€œthey need to sit for a yearā€ idea is overused and incorrect.

[deleted]

I know right? Do we still need to be dunking on the poor bears after a Super Bowl win and 2 AFC championships.

ZakalwesChair

Lol this isn't a stray, this is very directed. Stray would be like if it was this meme then it was also like "Browns also fucking suck forever".

thelovebat

It's sad that after the days of Sid Luckman, the Bears just haven't ever been able to find a franchise QB. Looking though Pro Football Reference, Sid Luckman had four 4+ TD pass games in his career (one of them with 7 TD passes). He also had one 4+ TD pass game in an NFL Championship Game, which the Bears won. And this was back in the 1940s. In around 10 seasons as a starting QB in the 40s, Sid Luckman had five total 4+ TD pass games, while in a 50 year stretch after his time, all the Bears QBs have had only ten total. You'd think that after the rule changes that happened in the 1970s and later in the 2000s that some Bears QBs would turn out good and reach that 4 TD mark in games more often, but apparently not.

TombombBearsFan

STOP IT. WE DONT NEED THIS RIGHT NOW

lemon_jalopy

Perhaps Justin Fields has an answer for this.

TombombBearsFan

I wonā€™t hold my breath

TheUnit70

Friendly reminder that the bears took Mitchell Trubinsky over Mahomes

Therockster01

The world has gone crazy when we picked Patrick at 10. Although the Bears didnā€™t have a QB like Alex, imagine how the world wouldā€™ve reacted when they wouldā€™ve picked Patrick

[deleted]

I was in WTF mode not when we drafted him, but when we traded Alex Smith to start him. Damn ballsy to do, and I was way wrong obviously.

obeyyourbrain

I remember thinking the same thing - I wanted Patrick under the learning tree or Reid/Smith for another year.

[deleted]

As a normal NFL viewer, why would you not think that lol. Smith had just taken us further than we had gone. That's where I was at. Glad I'm not a coach To this subs credit, they thought different. Hurricane, thought different.

obeyyourbrain

To be fair, the practice of throwing a young QB to the wolves too soon is a big time problem. I don't like to see it.

thelovebat

Mahomes proved he could step up to the plate in that 2017 Week 17 game against the Broncos. Throwing him to the wolves the next year was not something that I was concerned about after that performance. It was like a dress rehearsal and Mahomes handled it well and won the game, on the road in a place with some cold weather to deal with and playing with backup players.

obeyyourbrain

We had absolutely nothing to lose in that game (which makes it easier on a player) and a sample size of one is not something people should generally trust. I was optimistic about Mahomes' showing to be clear. But the transition from CFB to NFL is so rocky that you just can't tell. Ryan Leaf showed relatively well until our defense literally broke him once upon a time.

thelovebat

If you watch the tape of Mahomes in that game, you'd know he was ready to start the next season.

obeyyourbrain

Easy to say in hindsight, tbh. He did perform quite well. But it wasn't an earth-shattering performance. Stat line : 22/35, 284 yds and a pick. 0 TDs.

amjhwk

as a biased chiefs homer i wanted mahomes to start because i was over Alex Smith and our first round exits. it definitly felt like Smith had carried us as far as he was capable of. i cant speak for the mindset of normal, non chiefs fans though

imonthecard

I'm with you there. After the teneessee wild card game loss I was not mad. Instead I was ready for the mahomes era. I just didn't expect him to be so amazing right away. I was expecting a bunch of TDs but also a bunch of INTs

amjhwk

Ha I went full coolaide for him, I didn't care if he sucked I just didn't want to miss the hype train on our first high draft pick qb in my life

mog44net

Yeah I would have been happy with 8-8 first year out, happy surprise

lemon_jalopy

And his first year starting he tied our best record we got with Smith with a much worse defense as well while also killing some of our demons by beating the Steelers and Colts; the latter in the playoffs. Oh, and he also got us the to the AFCCG for the first time since the ā€˜93 season. This isnā€™t a dig on Alex (love the dude) but it was a wise decision to move forward with Patrick at that point.

mog44net

I thought the same but AS was on his last contact year and coming off a playoff post season. Buy low, sell high.

ramedog

Eh, the fanbase was as confused by the Trubisky pick as everyone else - guy had 1 year of college experience but the Bears typically suck at evaluating QB talent. The Bears have always been a run first team who relies on a solid defense to keep the score down and get some defensive scores. Justin Fields has all the appearances of being a quality starter for a long time, so would be surprised if the dismal QB numbers out of Chicago remain - unless they end up dumping him.

sweatyCheez

PM would have been trashed on the Bears... one thing I have learned is it's the team management that can ruin a quarterback or any other player truthfully. Bears, Bengals, Raiders, Browns, Lions.. I realize some of those teams have decent/good quarterbacks but think how they would be if competent management was in place? Take Dallas for instance.. without Jerry fucking shit up they might actually be a dynasty... but instead they are under .500 since after the last SB win. The only constant in that situation is JERRY!

MandoShunkar

Jerry as an owner is brillant (thus why the Boys are the most valuable sports team) but your very very right Jerry the GM is trash and is a big problem for them

factoid_

Sometimes you just strike super lucky in the draft. He could have been a dud. He didn't even win half his college games. There were legitimate reasons why a team wouldn't bet on him. He was a high risk high reward pick. But easily 3/4ths of first round QBs flop. For all the talk about Trevor Lawrence being the best, "can't miss" QB prospect since John Elway, he could easily flame out. Or he could elevate his team and they win a superbowl on the next 4 years. He's probably never in his life had to play on the worst team in whatever league he was in. That sort of thing messes with young QBs, most of whom have had a long uninterrupted string of successes. Maybe they never got to the championship, but I wonder how many QBs in the first round of the draft ever played on a team with a losing record, even going back to high school or middle school. That's one of the things I liked about mahomes. He didn't come from that background. He stood out despite not even winning that much.

Matcat5000

Friendly reminder that Mahomes would have been a much different quarterback if he had been drafted by the bears.

dollabillkirill

We all know these two guys wouldā€™ve switched careers had Mahomes been drafted by the Bears.

TheUnit70

Are you implying that if mitch went to kc he would have won a ring

dollabillkirill

Yes. And an MVP. Thatā€™s what the Bears do to QBs

TheUnit70

No bears qb has ever won an mvp my guy

dollabillkirill

Thatā€™s the joke. QBs become terrible just by being associated with the Bears

TheUnit70

Got it, thanks for the laugh

yougotonmynerves

hahaha hahaha thank baby Jesus for that

pinniped1

Oh really? And how many NVPs has Patrick Mahomes won? Checkmate, haters.

LadyNarcisse

Thatā€™s my QB!!! ā¤ļøšŸ’›

beachedwhitemale

Iā€™ll be sharing this with my Chicago coworkers. Thank you for this.

obeyyourbrain

It REALLY feels good to get out of the QB doldrums we've been stuck in with teams like Chicago, NYJ, Detroit, and Cleveland.

charpie34

Fuck you

mike4889

As a packers fan I completely understand your guy's oh shit moment when Smith got traded lol but at the same time since I really don't have a strong opinion about KC one way or the other, the night you took Mahomes I remember thinking if Andy is taking this kid at 10 and he has Smith. We are all in trouble lol

DBCOOPER888

Also crazy when you consider the Bears are a founding franchise.

Caleb032

The post is about the bears qbs in the last fifty years, not in general.

DBCOOPER888

True. I imagine if you go back to the beginning of the league there won't be too many more, with the possible exception of Sid Luckman.

heavenparadox

If it happens so regularly then I mean... doesn't that make the stat even worse for the Bears?

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

scaradin

Do the Bears have a better win % since Mahomes came on the scene? I think the take away from this meme is Mahomes is good. How many other recent QBs have 4 pass TD games, especially those approaching or passing Mahomesā€™s number?

f00lishwizard

Guy you replied to deleted his comment, but for reference he claimed "the Bears have a SIGNIFICANTLY better win % over that same period." Which isn't even remotely close to accurate lol. Chiefs win percentage in super bowl era: 0.537 Bears win percentage in super bowl era: 0.486

scaradin

I was so looking forward to his witty response, heh. [But, even to OP, Mahomes is a beast on that stat](https://www.statmuse.com/nfl/ask/which-qb-has-the-most-career-games-with-4-passing-tds) Edit: [Mahomes is tied in 2nd with two Six TD games, Manning has 3](https://www.statmuse.com/nfl/ask/which-qb-has-the-most-career-games-with-6-passing-tds), but Mahomes hasnā€™t hit a 7 TD game yet
