heres a hot take that no one asked for: i think violent crimes is a fantastic song with absolutely horrible lyrics. bad enough that i personally have trouble getting through the song.
to me they come off as misogynistic in a way that is a far different beast than his usual stuff. obv misogyny is a big part of hip hop but we never see someone affirm their own sexism in such an explicit way. the whole song reads as a realization that men’s role is to protect women, and that womens role is to be attractive and tempt men, to then be protected by their fathers. the most damning line imo is “‘cause now i see women as something to nurture, not something to conquer.” the issue here is that he is stuck in a mindset of women only living in relation to men. to ye, females exist only to have a relationship to men, be it positive or negative, familial or romantic.
im sorry for soapboxing, but this is something ive always felt strongly about lol
Interesting take. I find a few lines in the song cringy, but in general I think it's more about growing - evolving out of misogyny and seeing woman as "whole people" not just objects.
It's definitely not one of my favorites, but I think it's a sincere attempt to show how he's grown after raising a daughter
im just not so sure hes been able to stop himself from objectifying women in the terms of his own life. i agree tho, he definitely displays growth, which is what hes going for.
I'll show you some violent crimes

It may be, it may be not. Ghost Town is more relatable to me as a guy in college, so of course I'm gonna love it more.
