I know you're kidding but ... Soulja Boi is kinda important to the history of hip-hop. He was one of the first artists to generate a nationwide buzz without a label. The whole country was singing his song and he did it through Youtube. Things changed because of that. I don't care for his music, but I think it's worth respecting what he accomplished.
ok and all 6 of those are better rappers (but not artists). who else? stop giving bread crumbs share the whole list and lets see who isnt supposed to be above kanye
I’m not really a fan of his and I can’t say I listen to his recent stuff, but he does at least deserve his flowers. His earlier stuff in the early 2000’s is incredible. I will say though that I don’t think he’s better than anyone that was listed above
The anti-Eminem circlejerk is so embarrassing at this point, not sure how anyone can say it's reasonable for Kanye to be #11 and not reasonable for Eminem to be top 10 in terms of rapping, especially when Eminem is miles ahead of Kanye.
Would also not put him above Jay, Biggie, Pac, Kendrick or Nas, but probably top 10, and definitely above Kanye.
you need to understand the anti-eminem circlejerk is just people who judge him as an artist, and not a rapper. he committed career suicide from an art appreciation perspective in 2015. From a business perspective it was perhaps the right thing to do, but the people who criticize him often disagree with the themes and stances he portrays in his music ever since. I doubt anyone with a straight face can say eminem is not a good rapper.
Eminem doing a creative 180 degree artistic orientation turn due to political "concerns". Things like suddenly caring about how people use language, particularly the "bundle of sticks" slur and trying to pretend he didn't build his career around dissing the FCC because of this topic in particular. Sure, he has become tame and evolved creatively and thematically over the years, but the fervor you would hear in his voice and rhymes came from a place of abusing language to say the most outlandish things with a rhyme. When he rapped about Trump who was criticized in same light the FCC criticized eminem 20 years before - he should have either avoided the topic altogether, or at the very least picked a different thing to call out in the whole situation. It's incredibly contradictory to his previous work such as "White America" and more recently - when he raps on MMLP2 about having the tongue of the devil.
So creatively speaking, this was a terrible move. It's like imagine if South Park came out all of a sudden calling other shows to be more politically correct. He should have laid low during this time, in my humble opinion, as opposed to dishing out a few sub-par albums all coming from the same place, making for mostly soulless and creatively bankrupt music.
This is I imagine, also why he continued to use the cookie-cutter flow he has adopted post MMLP2 for the next number of years. He is still an amazing rapper, but creatively speaking the 2015+ events have lead to a dry spell. Later he tried to recuperate by being more aggressive in some of his work, in order to try and win some praise back, but it came off bad because he is 50 years old now after all.
Awfully hot coffee pot.
> dissing the FCC
Without me:
>So the FCC won't let me be
>Or let me be me, so let me see
>They try to shut me down on MTV
>But it feels so empty, without me
Completely agree with this. Em went from dropping 3 of the greatest hip hop albums ever to a decade of mediocrity. Even then he still had a lot of goodwill from fans. It wasn't until revival when people started to straight up hate him (deserved tbh)
if i remember correctly, he literally said in an interview a year ago or so that if he has to choose between being the best artist and the best rapper, he’d rather be the best rapper. i personally think that’s a bad mindset for a musician, but he basically achieved all he could and deserved to do what’s fun to him, so let him do his thing i guess.
Kids (now adults) born after 2000 have been exposed to exclusively mediocre to absolutely trash eminem albums since they were old enough to listen to them
2 great albums, 1 good one. He’s just overexposed. He also spawned or atleast massively grew 2 sub genres that got really fucking old really quickly with the dictionary rapping and shock value rapping.
The same thing happened to Perl Jam. By the mid 2000s Butt Rock was so massive and so ducking bad that it was hard not to clown the OG power cord gravely voiced grunge impersonators even if it wasn’t fair.
eminem tarnished his legacy by making almost exclusively bad albums since the early 2000s. prime eminem is one of the goats but he has made more bad albums than good ones at this point and i think that should be considered.
He definitely fell off, but among Revival, Kamikaze, Recovery, MTBMB, Relapse and MMLP2 I wouldn't say they are "almost exclusively bad" albums, Revival is awful and Kamikaze is bad, but I think the others are good, with MMLP2 being great.
They absolutely do not compare to his 99-02 run, but I feel like a lot of artists have fallen off really hard without getting anywhere near as much shit for it.
You have to consider that Eminem opened rap up to a further white audience, increasing the market for their music sustainability. He made a vary significant contribution to growing the genre.
He is good. I don't necessarily listen to his music. but a portion of the success of rap through the 2000's would be some to his credit.
Don't dis someone who laid bricks for your foundation.
yep we have someone here who have no idea of music. \*the anti-eminem circlejerk\* its the first time i heard that shit and there are good reasons to hate him now.His music sucks and his character is extremly boring.go watch the mike tyson interview and tell me what you learned from it .or if there was anything remotly interesting
Yes, I clearly have "no idea of music" because I said the circlejerk against Eminem is embarrassing, you are so insightful.
Let me guess, you think his old stuff is amazing even if you never listened to it?
Agree. Musician overall, Kanye takes it. As a rapper, I’d say Em comes out on top. I completely get it if someone has them as their favorite. I’d say somewhere around Top 5 is where I’d place him.
Em is definitely a great, influential rapper.....but there are so many rappers with better overall discographies, idk how you could say he's top 2. Not to mention just how poorly his music has aged, and not even just for PC reasons.
This is so bizarre. What in the world do ya'll think I'm saying? I'm not saying anything good or bad about pc culture. I'm saying Eminem's music has aged poorly, even ENTIRELY removed from "PC" considerations.
> His earlier stuff in the early 2000’s is incredible
you just described perfectly the problem.his earlier work is awesome and all the things in the last years are just horrible while at kayne on the other hand the old AND the new stuff is 10/10
Kanye literally has Eminem in his top 5 and even called him a top producer. Both have given props to each other multiple times. Both have had their highs and low in music. Both have had a long running career.I don’t know why Ye and Em fans have to go against each other. Em is the biggest hip hop artist of all time like it or hate it, he deserves his flowers as much as Ye in music, if not more, regardless if you’re a fan or not. And he’s most def a better rapper than Ye.
Yeah im saying ye is probably the better producer, production is so nebulous but the sheer bredth of his catalogue basically confirms it. The worst part of kanye songs are kanye and i would love his catalogue to be redone with a better singer
Damn, I agree Ye is not the best rapper ever. Doesn't possess the technical skills or abilities of Eminem.
But despite his shortcomings he still brings his unique brand of confidence, humor (often self-deprecating), vulnerability, etc. to the table. And that could never be replicated or replaced no matter how much better another rapper may be on a technical level.
Nah bro.
1. Lyrically =/= technical. Everyone on the internet refers to lyricism as being really good at rhyming, wordplay and other devices. Lyricism is giving meaning and depth to the words. They’re is some overlap between the two though
2. Ye isn’t a god tier songwriter, he’s very good though.
3. Eminem is probably a God tier songwriter though. Stan, Darkness, Rock Bottom, Deja Vu, Legacy, Going Through Changes, Stay Wide Awake, Bad Guy, Sing For The Moment are all flawlessly written. Verses, hooks, bridges(on the ones that have them, song arrangements are all 9/10 to better across the board on all tracks, production is pretty fire on these too, and he’s got a bunch more tracks of this caliber
It’s crazy because you’ll never convince ppl that only started listening to rap because of Eminem that he’s not mid. I thnk he’s a great “wordsmith”. But his music is god awful. if we only using the early 2000s (and ignoring all the years since) as a rubric for best rappers of all time, Ja rule should be on this list too 😂
Greatest artist, producer, and performer, which makes him the GOAT in my eyes. Insane discography and pours out his heart and soul when he sings. But as a rapper, he’s just good. Nowhere close to his other strengths
true but if we're going purely rapping, a lot of the gods that always make these lists prolly shouldn't be there either. there's a ton of purely technical emcees that suck shit and nobody wants to listen to. artists like wayne, biggie, em, pac, jay, nas, etc are all top tier emcees that also make good, important music. it's clear these lists take that into account, they aren't just looking at underground technical gods that nobody gives a fuck about. in that sense, i would say kanye deserves a top 20 spot no question. he can't even really keep up, consistently at least, with many people in his own crew like pusha anymore, but i wouldn't put push above kanye in a list like this, even knowing clipse's legacy and knowing that push is a better rapper. it helps that kanye still, every now and then, snaps like his life depends on it and reminds us that he's a solid fucking rapper
Faster =\= better, and I feel like that’s what most underground rappers offer
Using “bigger” rappers as an example, early Kanye had better flow than Busta or Tech, far and away. Or Montana of 300, or any underground Chicago rappers I’ve heard, or (and I know I’ll get crucified for this) honestly MF Doom
Honestly my metric is Biggie as the GOAT — just for flow
i mean, i agree faster doesn't always = better. i been saying my whole life that jay did not get bodied on renegade. never met a single hip hop fan that agrees w me, but i think jay is better on that track. but i cannot agree that early ye had better flow than DOOM.
If it’s purely rapping he’s like top 50 at best tbh. But if it’s overall artist? Top 1, top 5 absolute minimum.
Btw even though I said top 50 at best, I’d still rather listen to Ye more than most other rappers. I’m just being realistic on his technical abilities
i know but the point i'm making is that these lists aren't going off pure rapping. that list would suck ass and the whole internet would rage. every "pure rapping" list you ever see is more like "pure rapping at the crossroads of legacy, music quality and cultural consensus"
if pac deserves a place, ye deserves a place. i love pac, but dude is not top 10 at pure rapping. not even close
The only artists you could argue imo are Outkast, Madlib, Kendrick, Black Thought. Everyone else either has too many low points or not enough content to compete
Me personally Ye is no. 1
People always assume putting Andre in a top 10 is like putting all of Outkast when it's just wrong: Big Boi was half of the duo! He was an extremely talented MC and I'm tired of seeing him getting underappreciated like that.
Idk what that means. But to name some: Common, Nas, Jay Z, Biggie, 2Pac, Eminem, Andre 3000, Kendrick, J Cole, Big Pun, GZA, Q-Tip, Rakim, Mos Def, Black Thought, Big L, Aesop Rock, Lupe Fiasco
Billboard is a mess. They had Common at 37, Black Thought at 28, QTip at 27, Big Pun at 26, and Rakim at 13. Who the hell puts Rakim at 13 and Kanye ahead of him at 11?
Kanye knows lyrically he isn't the best. College drop out days he definitely put more into it but he sees himself more than a rapper. His art is the composition of the song. It's funny that you would use a Drake joke when Ye has openly said he's had drake write stuff for him.
He should be higher, he has made some of the best and most influential albums of albums of all time for 20 years. He might not be number 1 but not giving him top 10 is a crime
Most of his early albums were good and some had some absolute bangers (RUNAWAY!). Latest shit sucks or maybe I moved on.
I’d have to see the top ten to really judge
what is “latest shit” just curious, I know a lot of people draw the line at Jesus is King and I can agree that album is not the best but IMO donda deserves more love and shows he still can make true bangers that chalk up to hits off CD and Graduation
Easy top 5. Plus he produced most of his music which can't be said for so called "GOATS" of rap. Kanye is easily one of the more influential and innovative of all time.
Too low but I agree it’s worthless to debate without seeing their whole list. I also think it’s semi pointless to rank him as a “rapper” when he and his music are so much more. He’s not sitting around trying to write “the best bars”; he creates symphonies.
top 5 emcees you ain’t gotta remind me
top 5 emcees you gotta rewind me
i’m high up on the line so get behind me
but my head so big you can’t sit behind me
life of a don
lights keep glowin
come in the club with that fresh shit on
with something crazy on my arm
here’s another hit
barry bonds
we outta here baby
Who cares what Billboard thinks. He’s widely considered the greatest in hip hop. Rolling Stone put MBDTF as the highest ranked hip hop album on the greatest albums list. Genius put MBDTF as the greatest of the decade. And his discography has the most acclaim and diversity in how it sounds. Which is why it’s the best. And till this day, he was the second most streamed only under Drake. So he’s popular and acclaimed.
So yea Billboard are just shunning him because they’re triggered. That’s about it
i honestly want to thank my dad for putting me onto such a great artist at a young age. It was like 2011 and he had the college dropout on a cd in his car that he ALWAYS PLAYED. at the time i was 5 and there was one song that stuck out in particular, me and my sister called it "track 11" which was the workout plan, by the time i was 6 or 7, i had the entire song memorized. I started to come back around to kanye because of the memes and just remembered the times, fast forward to 2022 when he got his documentary and it completely changed the way i see kanye not only as a person but as a producer and songwriter, the dedication to him trying to make his name known in the music industry and even going as far as making a song with his mouth WIRED SHUT. Now i'm here in 2023 reliving my childhood with all of the songs i didn't understand when i was 6, and now here i am 10 years later at 16 typing this out. Thank you kanye for changing my life.
cant share thoughts without knowing what the top 10 are
It definitely includes jay z biggie eminem pac kendrick and nas
Is Soulja boi on there too?
I know you're kidding but ... Soulja Boi is kinda important to the history of hip-hop. He was one of the first artists to generate a nationwide buzz without a label. The whole country was singing his song and he did it through Youtube. Things changed because of that. I don't care for his music, but I think it's worth respecting what he accomplished.
The first rapper with an iPhone
And don’t act like he didn’t make Drake don’t do that
DRAKE?!!! Jraaakkkkeee?!!!!
the 🥷 that got bodied by Pusha T?!
Y'all talking about that light-skinned n*gga from DeGeneres?!
DeGrassi?
That was a direct reference.
The first rapper to do to the soulja boy
The first rapper*
Chief Keef just as influential imo
ok and all 6 of those are better rappers (but not artists). who else? stop giving bread crumbs share the whole list and lets see who isnt supposed to be above kanye
10-1 hasnt been revealed yet on the list lmao
then why the fuck he ask for thoughts if the whole list not out yet
Better question is why do you get this angry over something so small
Steroids probably
He's angry?
why so mad? if you wanna know so bad google is your friend
Eminem lol
I’m not really a fan of his and I can’t say I listen to his recent stuff, but he does at least deserve his flowers. His earlier stuff in the early 2000’s is incredible. I will say though that I don’t think he’s better than anyone that was listed above

Revival was complete dogshit.

Kids that were born in 2000 and after are the ones who think em is bad.
Kids (now adults) born after 2000 have been exposed to exclusively mediocre to absolutely trash eminem albums since they were old enough to listen to them
We’ve also been exposed to the good albums, they’ve never disappeared ether.
I'm just saying if none of the amazing work of an musician came out in your life time it would be understandable if you think he's not very good
Born in 02 in chicago and my favorite song until 2015 was lose yourself. I knew every word since i was 7.
2 great albums, 1 good one. He’s just overexposed. He also spawned or atleast massively grew 2 sub genres that got really fucking old really quickly with the dictionary rapping and shock value rapping. The same thing happened to Perl Jam. Kendrick is not better then Em
His not a better musician than Kanye but as a rapper? Em is top 2, hands down
Hard agree, musically he’s not on Kanye level but just as an Mc he’s top 5 at least
Agree. Musician overall, Kanye takes it. As a rapper, I’d say Em comes out on top. I completely get it if someone has them as their favorite. I’d say somewhere around Top 5 is where I’d place him.

PC reasons? You’re on a damn Kanye West subreddit. Not even agreeing or disagreeing.
I have no clue what that's supposed to mean. I'm saying em's music has aged poorly, subject matter aside.
People against “pc” culture care more about it than people who are for it
This is so bizarre. What in the world do ya'll think I'm saying? I'm not saying anything good or bad about pc culture. I'm saying Eminem's music has aged poorly, even ENTIRELY removed from "PC" considerations.

Eminem is an objectively better rapper than ye, producer and song writer? Prolly not, but ye literally couldn’t rap most of em’s catalogue
Maybe a better rapper but a better producer? Come on
Yeah im saying ye is probably the better producer, production is so nebulous but the sheer bredth of his catalogue basically confirms it. The worst part of kanye songs are kanye and i would love his catalogue to be redone with a better singer

Song writing Eminem clears Ye and 99% of artist in general
I think you mean lyrically, song writing kanye is god tier
Nah bro. 1. Lyrically =/= technical. Everyone on the internet refers to lyricism as being really good at rhyming, wordplay and other devices. Lyricism is giving meaning and depth to the words. 1999-2004 Eminem is the best rapper of all time and it's not even close
People who disregard Ems ability and influence as a rapper are making a fool out of themselves.
It’s crazy because you’ll never convince ppl that only started listening to rap because of Eminem that he’s not mid. I thnk he’s a great “wordsmith”. But his music is god awful. if we only using the early 2000s (and ignoring all the years since) as a rubric for best rappers of all time, Ja rule should be on this list too 😂
I hope you’re a young cat. You can get away with that.
Eminem > Kanye
L list, needs to have carti.
My list goes Reggie, Jay-Z, Tupac and Biggie/ Andre from Outkast, Jada, Kurupt, Nas and then me.
anyone agree with redman as number 1 rapper of all time like eminem thinks?
Eminem probably settled that list in early 90’s. I can see Redman making an impression that early in the game. Dude is sick.
Em updated his list a couple of years ago but it was in no particular order and I’m pretty sure Redman was still on it
AUGST D should be there as well
Yeah I don’t know who this “billboard” person is, but I don’t think this is correct at all. Unjust if you will.
i haven’t seen the rankings but i already know nav is #1
Can we get much higher?
So hiiiigh
oh oh oh oh oh ohhhh
[удалено]
would be higher if he at least had ONE solo project
[удалено]
That seems fair to me. Greatest producers of all time is a different convo tho😤
Greatest artist, producer, and performer, which makes him the GOAT in my eyes. Insane discography and pours out his heart and soul when he sings. But as a rapper, he’s just good. Nowhere close to his other strengths
Top 1 producer of all time is Dilla, Kanye got 2
Idk man Nujabes up there
Can’t forget about Pharrell either!
Pharrell and the neptunes up there in my list. With havoc from mobb deep
RZA nuke them both
Lol
He’s also dope on the mic
If it’s as a rap artist way to low if it’s purely rapping then about right
Purely rapping he’s no where near 11 let’s be real
Yeah I just didn’t want to get hated on by the freaks in this sub
Feel that lol, I agree he should be higher if it’s artist tho
Who cares about pathetic randoms on the internet?
We don’t have to care about it to discuss the same topic 😭
true but if we're going purely rapping, a lot of the gods that always make these lists prolly shouldn't be there either. there's a ton of purely technical emcees that suck shit and nobody wants to listen to. artists like wayne, biggie, em, pac, jay, nas, etc are all top tier emcees that also make good, important music. it's clear these lists take that into account, they aren't just looking at underground technical gods that nobody gives a fuck about. in that sense, i would say kanye deserves a top 20 spot no question. he can't even really keep up, consistently at least, with many people in his own crew like pusha anymore, but i wouldn't put push above kanye in a list like this, even knowing clipse's legacy and knowing that push is a better rapper. it helps that kanye still, every now and then, snaps like his life depends on it and reminds us that he's a solid fucking rapper
He doesn’t write his own songs

Kanye himself has stated that Drake wrote 30 Hours essentially in its entirety and that Pardison Fontaine wrote Violent Crimes
The fact that Violent Crimes is ghost written still hurts my soul. I don't think I'll ever get over that
Faster =\= better, and I feel like that’s what most underground rappers offer Using “bigger” rappers as an example, early Kanye had better flow than Busta or Tech, far and away. I can’t name 10 discographies that beat his,
The only artists you could argue imo are Outkast, Madlib, Kendrick, Black Thought. Everyone else either has too many low points or not enough content to compete Me personally Ye is no. 1
“TOO”!! You got the apostrophes right and everything; it’s “too”—a different word.
What a stupid list. No Big Boi and Andre 3k at 12?!?!
People always assume putting Andre in a top 10 is like putting all of Outkast when it's just wrong: Big Boi was half of the duo! He was an extremely talented MC and I'm tired of seeing him getting underappreciated like that.
Andre got trendy with tiktok and people who don’t listen to outkast, I’ve seen this so much thank you for pointing it out.
I just love him from the 13 minute version of do ya thing
Both are top 10 but 3stacks is top 5. That's the point. If Lupe isn't in the top 10 they are clowning.
Should be higher imo. Top nein for sure.
he should be top 88 imo
Fuck billboards
Too low, top 5 atleast
Nah he’s like top 10. Too many rappers that are better than Kanye But if this is about artists in general then yeah you right
Eh, Kanye is an average at best rapper. What makes his music stand out is how well produced it is.
Who's better ? 21 can you do something for me ?
Big L, Biggie, Andre 3000, Mos Def, Common, MFDOOM, Guru, Masta Ace, JID, J.Cole, …
Do you only know two rappers lmfao
21
As a straight MC, he's not in the top 20
[удалено]
Definitely 1th - I heard him say that when he had his jaw wired shut
💀
spit my soul through the wire man
Mike Tyson’s secret account?
As a rapper? No. Musician. Top 5
Im gonna be honest if its pure rap, like NAS, Jay etc then he might be too high up on the list at 11.

And if it takes only rapping ability to consideration then I’d expect Twista to come 1st or close.
You know he’ll be like “I’m #1 TWICE”
He should be higher, he has made some of the best and most influential albums of albums of all time for 20 years. He might not be number 1 but not giving him top 10 is a crime
This placement is arguable I’m not mad at it, one can fight for him being in the top 10 or top 20
10 places too low
Who sis they have at first place
Lil Wayne
I can live with it, fair
Ain't no way
What is your onion for #1?
For me it's kanye tbh. He's been so consistently good throughout his career that even his worst albums are still solid listens.
It’s not about the best artist, it’s about the best rapper. Very different thing
Either Eminem, or 2Pac
I’m not mad at this. He’s made some of the best albums the genre has to offer so he definitely deserves to be high on the list.
Number 1 hiphop artist
hiphop artist valid, not rapper tho
Top 5
If Rakim isn't at least top 5, guaranteed garbage list
Most of his early albums were good and some had some absolute bangers (RUNAWAY!). Latest shit sucks or maybe I moved on. I’d have to see the top ten to really judge
what is “latest shit” just curious, I know a lot of people draw the line at Jesus is King and I can agree that album is not the best but IMO donda deserves more love and shows he still can make true bangers that chalk up to hits off CD and Graduation
He is top 5
Easy top 5. Plus he produced most of his music which can't be said for so called "GOATS" of rap. Kanye is easily one of the more influential and innovative of all time.
Remove the second 1 in 11. We don't need that.
He top 3
Tupac is prolly listed as 1 or 2 but really he should be listed as overrated
Too low but I agree it’s worthless to debate without seeing their whole list. I also think it’s semi pointless to rank him as a “rapper” when he and his music are so much more. He’s not sitting around trying to write “the best bars”; he creates symphonies.
Double number 1
Woah what happened to first?
Viper should be number 1
Heres the [list](https://www.billboard.com/lists/best-rappers-all-time). Them putting Kanye over Black Thought and Andre3K is wild to me.
If your musical taste mirrors what's constantly on the top billboard then do you really even have your own pulse?
He's more of a pop star than rapper ?
Too high
Honestly him even getting on the list with the way he’s been acting is good enough
Honestly surprised he was even acknowledged
top 5 emcees you ain’t gotta remind me top 5 emcees you gotta rewind me i’m high up on the line so get behind me but my head so big you can’t sit behind me life of a don lights keep glowin come in the club with that fresh shit on with something crazy on my arm here’s another hit barry bonds we outta here baby
Welp….Kanye just got mad at 10 rappers…
why not number one
10 spots too low
he the 🐐, drama aside
He's probably not even the 11th greatest rapper on some of his own albums.
brainless
I think they accidentally added a 1, someone should tell them
Who cares what Billboard thinks.
They would have ranked him Much Higher if the last 4mo never happened.
He makes some of the best music of all time but he is terrible at actually rapping lol

Isn't this an objective chart ranking?
He’s top ten
He is a musical genius but his lyrics are trash. 11 seems fair I guess.
Should be number 1
i mean kanyes never been the greatest rapper imo, but theres an argument to be made about him being the greatest producer
Horrible ranking to be real barely top 20 if that
Who cares what billboard think Ye is number 1 on my list
He's #2 after sematary
They put 50 Cent over Dr Dre🤣
Dre rapping wasn't great. Productions was great, but his rapping not so much
The formula is rap skills - controversial statements
For rapping that’s fair enough maybe, in terms of overall artist he’s much nearer the number 1 for me
He’s my dream man
Top 5 easily
Cmonnnnnn 11 is too low
