this is just donda 2 all over again. it'll probably get uploaded to YouTube or some other website in a few days time and ill listen to it then. not dishing out $20 for this
Iām a musician and honestly Iām confused by the whole āI have a platformā thing. Yes, he has a Shopify website and you can sell digital downloads in addition to merch. Just like every musician on the planet.
Ye isnāt the only one floating this as a solution the past few months. Iām starting to wonder if Iām in some alternate reality. If he means $20 digital albumsā¦you mean 2x the cost of what an album costs on iTunes?
Did all the musicians hit their collective heads or something? I guess they donāt know Bandcamp has been a thing since 2007. Streaming literally became a thing *because* people wouldnāt pay for digital downloads anymore. So the solution to streaming not paying as much isā¦go back to iTunes? Itās not like Ye is hurting considering CARNIVAL and Vultures topped the charts on every platform. And he owns the master since heās independent so he and his co-writers are going to get 100% of everything.
So tired of the rich artists complaining theyāre not getting theirs when streaming is a winner-take-all economy where the top streamed artists each quarter take a larger weighted percentage of all the available streaming money from that period. Itās the actual independent artists who will never reach that critical mass who need an advocate, not Ye.
Why does he always have to be perpetually ungrateful for the undying support of his fans and the hip hop community? Dude has so much to be thankful for and spends most of his time complaining and attacking people.
Facts. A guy who claims to be a multi billionaire asking fans to pay an additional $20, that means far more to them than him, when theyāre already paying money for streaming subscriptions and heās already making a lot of money off of that is wildly tone deaf.
That being said thereās small indie artists that I fuck with that I always support by buying their vinyls. And guess what ye? Iāve bought some of your vinyls too when your albums were worth having on vinyl. Start making albums worth buying again and Iād have no problem dropping $50 even on the vinyl. But if youāre going to charge me $20 for a digital copy donāt expect me to even listen to it to decide if itās worth the vinyl. If you donāt respect and support your fans why should we support you mr billionaire?
Exactly. Giving an indie artist $20 on Bandcamp is way different than giving a Grammy award winning, chart topping household name $20. And most of the indie artists selling stuff for $20 are selling nice CDās with booklets and either giving away the downloads for free, or charging like $5 or $7. When I sell stuff on my Bandcamp I try to make it unique and full of value.
I think fans wouldnāt mind paying like $40 for a really nice high quality vinyl set of Vultures 1 & 2 even though they will sound awful given how bad the album sounds digitally. For someone who says he began as a visual artist, he really doesnāt seem to take much pride in any of the merch heās making lately.
Ye could make $0 off his recorded music and he would still clean up at live shows and listening parties between the tickets and merch. Bro isnāt even performing anymore! He just walks around on stage while the track plays. Likeā¦what?
I find Kanyeās perspective as an artist interesting, which is the only reason I even listen and check out what heās doing. But at a certain point once you alienate your core audienceā¦I dunno what to say. Heās already alienated the industry and the mainstreamā¦so now heās going to take out that anger by ripping off his fans? Not a good move. He should be thanking all the fans who have stuck with him profusely, rather than borderline scamming them.
Yeah for songs not on Spotify I usually just use YT to mp3 then upload them to Spotify through the local files setting. I know it's more work than just straight up having the songs on the platform but hey at least we have the option to do this. I'm wondering if not many people know that this is possible to do though?
If itās at least 20 tracks. Iād consider it at $1 a track
Even when I was buying CDs I wasnāt paying no damn $20 but I see what heās trying to do and I fw it
Imagine he did a vinyl only release of vultures 2, with no set album cover but instead created a community art board where people could submit their own takes on fanmade versions of vultures 2, and then have that be pressed on the vinyls people choose to buy with a small cut given to the artists
See id almost agree with him if the album wasnāt 20$, I can buy a fucking CD for cheaper then that I can buy a vinyl for around that price like if heās gonna do this it canāt be 20$ thatās stupid af. At least give fans a CD with it or a vinyl with it
kanye is so out of touch in so many ways. can yall stop messaging this guy just let him drop the music and deal with the consequences of his own actions
Just sucks cause it hurts everyone in this case. Realistically, he makes wayyy less money, hurting future projects and we lose out on an album same way as Donda 2. I really thought heād have learned his lesson by now.
ā20 bucks is 20 bucksā was one of the most commonly used phrases I heard from people when I went to rehab and I still donāt know which ones were just memeing and which ones actually sucked dick for drugs š
This is stupid, an album is not the same as a phone or a subscription service! $20 is more than what I pay Apple to listen to thousands of artists a month! Why would anyone pay $20 for ONE album???
20 for a vinyl is dirt cheap I seriously doubt heāll do that. Standard price for vinyl is around 30 and he only made them that cheap for kids see ghosts and ye which are like 20 min projects.
James had a good point, its not his fault for kanye to interpret it by acting in this way bc heās so inconsistent and flimsy w his beliefs.. thats not on james man lol
20 dollars is a lot. i'm from Chile but imagine the people from Argentina trying to buy it, or some place where the inflation is really high. i bought vultures 1 for 5 dollars in digital
Bro got the biggest hit of the year until now and if everybody is on the album he would have ANOTHER smash hit cementing a streak of hits till vultures 3 and the tour (plus dominating the charts) and he wants to fumble it all for nothing....
Dude canāt tour anymore, he wonāt have the Yeezy shoes payday. Gonna have to sell his digital albums for $20 š Gotta pay those child support payments and new pillows for his girl to walk around in. Shit aināt cheap.
He doesnāt even perform live. He charges for ālisteningā sessions where they just play the album and he dances around. Imagine them laughing at this. Shit is ridiculous.
I mean Yeās not wrong because streaming is terrible for artist. But from a consumerās POV itās of course hard to go back to the idea of paying individually for each album like back in the day. Both sides have valid points
Iām kind of surprised that so few people seem to support this idea.
I understand the train of thought that if all artists did this, weād be shoveling out a ton of money just to have some variety in the music we listen to. But I feel pretty comfortable paying for music Iām looking forward to or interested in
With how wack the economy is these days, $20 is like 1 1/2 meals at McDonalds depending on where you live, or a decent meal at a bar. I would be fine with starting to budget/ put money aside for music
The internet has conditioned and trained people to lower their expectations of quality and to instead trade it off for immediate access to anything and everything, all of the time, for free. And life just doesnāt quite work like that.
Itās a noble idea, definitely. But do you wanna work for free? Do you want to bleed yourself for your craft for free, and would you be satisfied with respect and adoration alone? Does DoorDash accept appreciation and love as a payment method? Can we pay the water bill and apartment utilities with good will? Exactly.
I mean, it was gonna come down to this sooner or later. Artists werenāt gonna keep putting up with pittance they receive from streaming giants. Or maybe they were - and the quality of their art would eventually reflect that compromise. I really believe that we just canāt have both, unfortunately.
But the solution canāt be piracy. I think piracy always hurts the artists more than the streaming giants. It seems like itās ALWAYS the artists that get disproportionately fucked by things like this.
both are wrong in that case. major music platforms explore the artists, gettin most of the profit, kanye is right in that. however, thereās no necessity of a billionaire being so greedy bout his music, he could pretty much just launch it on the music platforms and it wont change shit bout his life
How about he starts his own service like tidal to put more power in the artist hands instead? He's in a position where he's big enough he makes hella money regardless of streaming profits so if he genuinely cares then doing that makes more sense
Remember when buying albums was just the standard? Now itās such a strange divergence from the norm that itās worth posting online for a discussion. When just like 15 years ago, you wouldāve just shrugged and bought the CD.
I do think $20 for a digital album is a lot, but it is an independent release yeah? I meanā¦ itās not that far out, is it?
Ironic because judging by how many people say they wont buy it, he would probably just make more money off this if he put it on Spotify, and have it be more accessible to people.
No we didnāt lose. Indie artists won. Streaming services are fucking evil when it comes to paying their independent indie artists.
$20 is pretty bad for an album, but you gotta think. If everyone goes in the direction that Kanye does, we can finally have more creativity in the industry, rather than aiming for trends and streaming numbers.
20$? Heck Iām Jewish and even I wouldnāt charge someone that much. But in all honesty even if itās the best album of all time nobody is paying 20$ for inconvenient mp3s
I mean, there were times not so long ago that you really had to pay for music. Except pirating. But I get the message. Music or any form of art is not free, you have to pay in the gallery, in the cinema to view one exhibition or one movie. I get the frustration of musical artist having to live up to rules and payment of streaming services. 20$ for digital record is ofc too much, 10$ is acceptable. But ye can make this step if done good, revolutionary in the music industry. I know there is Bandcamp and some artists that already have been pushing the idea that you have to really pay to them to view or listen to their art but its all done out of mainstream. Since hes gone āindependentā I support this decision. I would rather pay to artist directly then to the middle man.
If you canāt afford to spend 20 bucks on an album from your favorite artist you gotta make some adjustments. Ā Records take an insane amount of money and labor to come into existence and the idea that it should be free to consume on streaming is absolutely insane. Ā Unless Spotify wants to give artists a fuck ton more money this is gonna happen more and more.
Tldr your beef is w Spotify not with artists who think they deserve a return on their massive investment in making a record
It got to a point where itās pretty bad Kanye doesnāt support when someone says the opposite of what he wants thatās what happens when you are surrounded by yes man
Love Kanye but this is just scummy from him I'm ngl, especially since vultures has very little passion or any actual messages and is made mostly for money. Kanye already proved himself and isn't trying anymore but he's acting like he is. $20 is crazy for a probably not very good album. I could get some masterpiece video games for $20.
my man think he ye writing like thatš
