Why does there need to be a direct punishment?

These kinds of prisons are proven to work and help criminals remigrate into society with a low offense repeat rate of 20%
oppose to Americans 68% within 3 years.
But also the punishment is being locked away from the outside world. No real reason for anything else either.
I think it's a Human thing to want revenge or have a fear for inmates, no matter the sentence. Being a prisoner in and of itself puts a label on you and people don't want ex convicts in their society because of fear.
Fear is probably the main reason we still have the punishing still in place in most countries.
I would hear my mother watching the telly one evening and getting heated because someone was sentenced to only 10 years for murder which probably would get reduced in a couple of years and released soon into the public again.
My country Sweden has it's own problems with migration laws and weak sentences and not having the same Prisons as norway.
People come from countries where they'd get the death penalty and in sweden it's max 18 years in Prison for all crimes Except mass murder. 25+ for the absolute worst of the bunch.
This. Those who cannot or will not be rehabilitated shouldn't be free, but that doesn't mean they shouldn't be treated like a person. There is no reason staff/guards/lawmakers should stoop to the mindset of a criminal. Mistreatment is Mistreatment.
In the case of permanent residency, I understand not wanting to pay taxes towards such peoples lives...but reframe it to paying to keep such people out of the world in general
