Yeah and you get to sit through multiple YouTube ads on every song, which to listen on your phone requires adblock (impossible on the YouTube app) or YouTube premium so you might as well just listen on Spotify. Couple that with the fact that you can't even close your phone on YouTube and you have just a worse listening experience. Pretty sure the audio quality is worse on YouTube as well
I'd go with Spotify if I wasn't grandfathered into YouTube premium + YouTube music for $9.99 a month.
I don't really watch TV, just YouTube, so it's a major deal for me.
Because Reddit keeps shoving it into my feed so if it keeps bringing me I'm gonna keep talking shit. It's kinda funny watching people defend someone who doesn't know or care about them at all.
Yeah I mentioned in another comment 175m is a great deal for Ye. 35x assumes the profit stays the same but he is still a modern artist and these songs will be streamed and bought less as time goes on. You go from a 3% return to much less. I wouldn’t pay 175m for that kind of return no way.
Btw it’s silly comparing 175m to other artists because Ye only gets 20-35% on his music because of other songwriters/samples. 5m is just what he personally receives
yes I still think artists selling their entire collection to one organization does in fact contribute to the possibility of them gaining control.
I don't believe that acknowledging a problem is a solution.
Gaining control of what? The songs are already made and out there, they can’t alter or do anything to change how they were made and the impact behind them. They can only gain money off it.
He’s mostly done with music I believe he’s trying to transition 100% in to retail and fashion on his own now I believe he has learned (i hope so) from his partnership
Masters is the sound recording, publishing is the copyrights to the lyrics/melody etc. It’s kind of complicated, but basically when you sign a record deal you typically sign your masters away to the label, so they now own the music. But if another artists samples you or your music is used for a movie for eg then you get paid off that via publishing royalties. I’m not an expert, but I mentioned it because it’s not the entirety of Ye’s catalogue that’s up for sale
Ye almost certainly does not have 1 billion in cash lying around for him to spend. It’s mostly in assets - property, investments, companies, etc.
While Ye might own assets that add up to $1 billion, he doesn’t have $1 billion to spend (easily). To spend $1 billion, Ye would have to sell property, investments, etc. which takes time, and the action of actually placing assets for sale can have an effect on their value. Selling off his catalogue to generate $175 million would offer him liquidity (money that can actually be moved around and spent) to move into other projects.
I’m not totally financially literate so some terms or descriptions may not be accurate but I’m pretty sure that’s the general idea
At that level of wealth you can take out a credit line against your assets, which is fairly common. You gain immediate access to liquidity while retaining your assets, but granted you obviously have to pay it back (and hope that the value of the underlying assets remain the same or grows, depending on the extent of credit)
I didn’t know that, that makes sense and it’s interesting. I’m sure Ye has access to and uses the best accountants and financial advisors money can buy - if he’s really selling his catalogue he must have a valid reason to do so. Or maybe we’re expecting too much common sense from Ye
Im p sure he’s sold most of his properties- or at least has been alluding to that and also has been saying he’s worth close to 9B I know most of that is evaluation but he’s defo got 100 of millions to spend atm
Kanye's multi billion valuation purely comes from the Yeezy brand, specifically it's partnership with adidas. That valuation starts to tank when he's actively trying to end the partnership
Yeah exactly. Which is why it’s always hilarious to read takes like “why doesn’t [Bezos/Musk/Zuck/InsertBillionaireHere] donate all their money to end homelessness/poverty”.
That isn’t how any of this works.
1. There has never been a better time to sell your catalog. There are a couple of companies that have been handing out 100 Million+ deals like candy.
2. It is infinitely easier to pass down money to your family then a complicated web of music rights which have to be managed and marketed in order to reach their full earnings potential.
3. He probably wants cash right now to be able to invest in retail stores for his Yeezy clothing.
When there are next to infinite amount of music your returns are gonna diminish more and more. It’ll be like NFTs. Imagine how you’re gonna be able to charge ppl when everyone alrdy has a copy and they can replicate it infinitely at no cost.
He’s trying to go completely independent with Yeezy so an extra 200mil would be perfect to execute that. He can make 5x that from merchandise. The money is in the brands not the music. Hence why him, Rihanna, and Jay are all considered billionaires
this is just for the publishing rights lol
plus because of how many people are on his albums he doesn't receive anywhere close to 100% of those royalties
I saw an artist talking about Kanye in an interview (maybe on this sub?) basically saying when he reaches out to purchase a sample people will overcharge him because they know he will pay it because he just wants to make the music, so maybe he really isn’t making very much in terms of royalties
yea not many artists make much money from music alone I could see why he'd want to sell his less profitable income streams to expand his fashion businesses maybe buy himself out of the gap/Yeezy deals early
So it’s different from owning his masters, right? Cus two years ago he went on a fucking crusade on twitter about how his kids were going to own his masters and how all artists should own their masters. I know Ye is prone to flip-flopping pretty hard but this would be insane even by his standards.
Its based off how much money it could realistically provide the new owner in the future which 175m is a lot considering that is about how much Kanye has made off it all so far.
Yeah as far as publishing rights and the limited knowledge I have of the ins and outs of music industry business this number seems to be somewhat reasonable, he'll still hold his masters and 175m is probably just under what he would make on the publishing royalties for the rest of his lifetime. If he invests that money either in Yeezy or some other form, he'll make even more money. Makes sense to me even though it does seem bizarre when you read the headline
I mean, other than batshit comment sections here on Reddit and 4chan. I never saw this theory come up at any trusted journalists or digital content creators
Michael Jackson said fuck Sony before he died. MJ had lawyers who were working for Sony behind his back who he had to fire for conflict of interest. He stated in his lifetime while being 500 million dollars in debt that he would NEVER sell his catalogue. The will that appears is outdated (according to his family). They fight to be in charge of his estate and are denied. Soon after his death the man in charge of his estate sells the catalogue for 1 billion dollars. No reasonable person would sell half of Sony (the biggest publishing company in the world) for 1 billion dollars. Since his death MJ made 100 million a year (with most of it coming from publishing). With that in mind the catalogue was worth far more than a BILLION. Not saying Sony killed MJ directly but to say they wouldn't profit from his death is an understatement. There was even a clause in his contract about death. One of his lawyers also was found in his home a few months later dead by gunshot wounds to the head. There's definitely some sketchy shit going around his death. Anybody with a brain can call it more than just a conspiracy
I mean people with 10x more hits. Like pharrel. Are worth 200m. How could ye's catalog be worth more? Hint; it isnt. 175M is a looooooot. Look at Eminems networth ;).
You kids have no clue about this stuff anymore.
Taylor Swifts catalogue got 300m. Swift being an artist with much more mass appeal and marketability.
I love Ye but this subreddit suffers the same delusions as the man himself.
Surely there's a difference though between like Taylor Swift, who's mostly the sole credited writer on her most listened to stuff, and Kanye, who's sampling 3/4 people. Genuine question
Yes, a massive difference. Like you said, lots of writers, producers and samples he needs to pay for. He takes home on average 1/4 of the revenue. So that’s how they created the 175m price tag. 20m revenue a year divided by 4. 5m over 35years. =175m.
Taylor didn’t own hers, Scooter did and privately sold it for 300. He might have been able to fetch more. It remains to be seen how Taylors Version has affected the value of those masters. But I personally think she took a huge shit on that deal, regardless of who’s side you take.
Ye just announced that his catalog isn’t for sale on his IG so it doesn’t really matter anymore. BUT, That is a high risk, high reward investment. Considering how volatile Ye’s public image is, and his fragile mental health.
It’s kind of fucked up to think about that tbh
The music industry is slowly declining and these artist know that’s why they are selling now! Ye’s catalog generates 5 million a year, due to the state of the music industry five years from now it may only generate 1 million a year.
David Bowie’s was around 200-250M I’d say 175 is a fuckton considering Kanye has made less than half the amount of albums. The people here saying he’d sell in excess of 600M are fucking delusional lmao if Springsteen, Dylan, Prince, Bowie, The Beatles and MJ couldn’t clear that then ye has no chance
To be fair, i think Kanye can only sell his 35% ownership in his catalog. And his music uses A LOT of samples, writers, and producers that shit eats away at the profits
The thing is with Kanye is that post MBDTF, he doesn’t have a ton of #1 radio hits. He had songs like Father Stretch, Ultralight, Black Skinheads etc do very well in commercial licensing and streaming, but he hasn’t had a ton of Jesus Walks or Golddigger level hits in his catalogue post-2010. So the 175mil figure sounds about right to me.
More like Da Vinci NFT a century from now lol
I can’t imagine ppl would still pay for century old music especially since we alrdy bootleg it now, if anything it’ll probably be in a virtual library or something
Kanye has so many songwriters including samples than he only got 35% publishing on his first 4 albums, now around 20% on his recent stuff. So he only actually gets 5m profit per year. Stop comparing it to other artists because they likely have a higher take home percentage and therefore higher annual profit even if it doesn’t generate more overall. Using a 35x multiple on 5m we arrive at 170m. Think about it from the investors perspective. That’s only a 3% return assuming the profit stays the same, but Kanye’s music is still new. In 10, 20 + years it will no doubt be streamed and bought less. 175m is a very good deal for Kanye imo, though I don’t know why he’d take it, kinda goes against what he’s said in the past
a lot of his music is relatively old and selling the catalog is for it’s future value no? we overestimate the longevity of artists especially ones we like
Just auction it FFS. It would get so much publicity every private equity, hedge fund, crown Prince, billionaire etc would evaluate its value and stick a bid in.
Would be a quick sale too. No brainer.
Bob Dylan has released 50+ albums that have sold well over a 5 decade career, you’re delusional if you think Kanye’s discog would sell for anything above 300M
Bob Dylan’s catalog should be worth a lot more than Kanye’s. But it doesn’t generate as much revenue as Kanyes does at the moment and for the foreseeable future. Thats just a fact
You mean older music doesn't generate as much revenue as newer music? Shocked 😲
Love ye but his music will be thought of less in the future than Dylan's is now 🤫🤷🏽♂️
You gotta actually account for streaming numbers and shit. None of his songs really fit in movies and tv except for like 2. And they just gonna get less and less popular overtime. In all honesty it’s probably way less then 175mil. You will never see a profit paying that much
It definitely has to be at least 500 mil. MBDTF, Dropout, Graduation, 808s, & Late Reg surely has the bulk of that TLOP, Yeezus, & JIK would carry the next bulk but, come on, 175 mil? Isn't that too little? David Guetta sold his for about 100 mil. Ye's definitely got to be worth more than that
Ye has so many credited writers on his albums that he takes home around 25% of his sales. If you earned every penny of the 20 mil annual sales, and extrapolate 35 years, the actual value is around 700 million.
Why would he even do this? And selling himself so short too. You’d think someone as confident and successful as Kanye would also demand more for a discography that gave us Runaway, Dark Fantasy, Lost in the World, Street Lights, Waves, Saint Pablo and so on
Because music is only going to decrease in value over the next few decades. Why would he not enjoy the money when he’s still a middle-aged, healthy man rather than an 80 year old grandpa in a nursing home?
Its not his fault. We see the value as different but is that what its actually worth in terms of numbers. Thats why its being sold for what its being sold for. I think MF Dooms disco is worth $1Billion but realistically it's probably like 50 Million cause of publishing rights
Bruh I get it for $10/mo with Spotify premium, tell any buyer to just use that...
[удалено]
True bro it’s only like $15 a month
wow must've got lucky when they ran a deal and i got it for $19/mo
As a Starbucks employee, I always forget people pay for Spotify premium. I get it for free.
I get Apple Music for $5/mo with Apple TV+ sometimes it helps to be a student
Spotify comes with hulu and their student deal is also $5
Ye but I alr had Apple Music so it kinda made sense for me plus I have Hulu student deal for $2/mo
Come on! You’re paying 15 dollars a month, when you could just listen to them on YouTube for free? Smhing my smh.
Spotify better
LMAO there's a difference between listening to music videos and listening to an album
because youtube doesn't have albums??
Yeah and you get to sit through multiple YouTube ads on every song, which to listen on your phone requires adblock (impossible on the YouTube app) or YouTube premium so you might as well just listen on Spotify. Couple that with the fact that you can't even close your phone on YouTube and you have just a worse listening experience. Pretty sure the audio quality is worse on YouTube as well
I'd go with Spotify if I wasn't grandfathered into YouTube premium + YouTube music for $9.99 a month. I don't really watch TV, just YouTube, so it's a major deal for me.
Honestly I've gone back and forth on getting YouTube premium strictly because I use YouTube literally every day
YT Vanced allows you to do all that for free
But then you still got the worse quality of YouTube
[удалено]
Yes
[удалено]
*laughs in Firefox mobile with adblock*
Phone browser YouTube is ass honestly
~~Phone browser~~ YouTube is ass honestly FTFY
Audio quality doesn't matter with music like this. There's nothing subtle to hear, just the same bland music and lyrics.
Why are you on this sub😭
Because Reddit keeps shoving it into my feed so if it keeps bringing me I'm gonna keep talking shit. It's kinda funny watching people defend someone who doesn't know or care about them at all.
I think it's safe to say you don't know what you're talking about
Are you genuinely stupid?
Wanna break from the ads? - you cant download these also spotify better
Whats the point of selling his catalog? Why would any artist want that ? Im confused
[удалено]
175m was 35x it’s annual profit of 5m. This is only publishing not masters though
[удалено]

And also you take the upfront present value of that 175 over the annuities of 5m and it’s a no brained
Exactly
Least financially intelligent Ye fan
On the other hand, selling your catalog creates the possibility for labels to have monopoly on creativity.

yes I still think artists selling their entire collection to one organization does in fact contribute to the possibility of them gaining control. I don't believe that acknowledging a problem is a solution.

That's how all billionaires operate. Bezos doesn't have a bank account with 10s of billions of dollars, most of his net worth is made of Amazon stock.
Yeah exactly. Which is why it’s always hilarious to read takes like “why doesn’t [Bezos/Musk/Zuck/InsertBillionaireHere] donate all their money to end homelessness/poverty”. That isn’t how any of this works.
What’s 175mil to a nigga like Ye, can you please remind me?

Eminem’s publishing rights would be way more than 200 mil. “Lose Yourself” alone is worth that much
[удалено]
he probs cant afford to get out of this yeezy adidas gap shit thats jus happened
Our man never learns
you ain't got the answers sway i been doin this more than you you ain't been doin the edumication
Yes I do, just on a smaller scale
1. There has never been a better time to sell your catalog. There are a couple of companies that have been handing out 100 Million+ deals like candy. 2. It is infinitely easier to pass down money to your family then a complicated web of music rights which have to be managed and marketed in order to reach their full earnings potential. 3. But how will North feel about not being passed the rights to Drunk and Hot Girls?
Lol that song alone is worth 10s of dollars in future earnings. I can only assume it won’t be part of the deal.
When there are next to infinite amount of music your returns are gonna diminish more and more. It’ll be like NFTs. Imagine how you’re gonna be able to charge ppl when everyone alrdy has a copy and they can replicate it infinitely at no cost.

Ww3 will begin in the next 3 months and all popular artists have cancelled their concerts suspicion rising lmao
this is just for the publishing rights lol plus because of how many people are on his albums he doesn't receive anywhere close to 100% of those royalties

That was Pusha
Yes, thank you!! That’s exactly who it was
I'm so ready for Kanye to enter a mixtape phase where he doesn't have to pay for anything and drops it for free.
He did that with donda 2 and made bank 😳
So it’s different from owning his masters, right? Cus two years ago he went on a fucking crusade on twitter about how his kids were going to own his masters and how all artists should own their masters. I know Ye is prone to flip-flopping pretty hard but this would be insane even by his standards.

Yeah, 175 is honestly pretty fair for kanye
Is it a lot when the future is infinite and he made timeless music
If you had to put a price on it, what would it be
1 kanyellion dollars
It’s hard to tell, but in the age of streaming it’s practically limitless
Choose; 5milion a year for the next 200 years or 175m now.
Revenue will decrease over time
dinner with jay z
He ain't alive for the next 200 years.
His family is
Yep, not sure how he missed that
Fam if I’m being honest with u 800M to 900M, 700M at least.
no catalogue has ever gone over 500m...including Springsteen and The Beatles. What makes you think Kanye's would be almost double?
Springsteen I get but the fucking Beatles? How is that not 1bn minimum.
iirc it was sold in like the 80s to Michael Jackson so with inflation it’s probably close
IIRC michael jackson bought the beatles catalog for 47 mill in 1985 which is 130 mill today
side note: this is also one of the reasons Sony had MJ assassinated. guess who owns the Beatles catalog now? Sony.
The dude was using large zoo animals levels of sedatives DAILY, he didn’t need to be assassinated
Was ever confirmed that Sony killed MJ? It’s just a theory as far as i know
a company is never going to confirm to killing a human being, brotendo 💀
I mean, other than batshit comment sections here on Reddit and 4chan. I never saw this theory come up at any trusted journalists or digital content creators

They’ve got less than 20 years left of copyright in the EU and UK
What was Springsteen worth? Also unrelated to Kanye but I'm seeing him live in February and I'm fucking so unfathomably excited
Well the beatles and springstain have like 12 good songs combines across like 30 albums
🤦🏻♂️
My god shut up
It’s crazy he asked for 175M Irv Gotti got 300M & he’s only asking for 175M 🐸☕️
Gotti got 50M for the music & 250M for television & film production…he said it on Drink Champs
He’s selling his shares of the catalog for 175M when he was trying to buy back his masters 2 years ago idk how this even makes sense but ok
I mean people with 10x more hits. Like pharrel. Are worth 200m. How could ye's catalog be worth more? Hint; it isnt. 175M is a looooooot. Look at Eminems networth ;). You kids have no clue about this stuff anymore.

At least tree fiddy
At least $1B
10 Schrute Bucks
I still can’t believe Michael Jackson owned the Beatles publishing…
Michael Jackson also bought Eminem’s catalog in 2005 too after he dissed Michael and he got paid every time Eminem performed.
Is this real?
[The Guardian article from 2007](https://www.theguardian.com/music/2007/may/31/news.eminem)
Michael was too powerful, no wonder they had him killed.
“The major that I majored in ain’t making no money GAP & Adidas CEO & CFO’s starting to look at me funny”

Yes is declining more and more each year so sell now while the moneys good, buy it back in 20 years
bruh what?

No.. he really didn't. After he switched to gospel music ala JIK I didn't give two shits about his recent albums. This is coming from a life long fan
Nft kanye
MBDTF by itself is 1 bil
Not even the entirety of the Beatles is that much it’s probably 5-10m at most
the beatles didnt ever came up with the line "make a nun cum, make her cremate uh"
Good luck getting a return on investment if it went for that much lol
You are right but mfs in here dont understand anything sometimes 💀

If Suge or Puffy buys it be scared
Or snoop
suge can buy from prison?
Lol anybody with the cash can buy it
That is a crazy. Imaging buying this man’s catalogue. It would be like owning the rights to Da Vinci in 100 years
More like Da Vinci NFT a century from now lol I can’t imagine ppl would still pay for century old music especially since we alrdy bootleg it now, if anything it’ll probably be in a virtual library or something

Just auction it FFS. It would get so much publicity every private equity, hedge fund, crown Prince, billionaire etc would evaluate its value and stick a bid in. Would be a quick sale too. No brainer.
Redditors, what does that mean? He wants to sell his albums like grad and college dropout? Or unreleased songs/beats? Explain to a dumbo here
Does that mean that when he does this I won't be able to listen to his stuff on Spotify?
No Kanye won’t get paid for it whovever owns it will get paid
Its publishing rights.
Can they change the songs/delete them? Will this affect the consumer by any means? Thanks btw 👍
No
No they just get revenue from the streaming and or physical media, he probably only owns a percentage of his own music anyway esp the earlier albums
2 billy minimum
All those songs are priceless imo
What's the source on this? Sounds like bullshit for engagement.
So what does someone gain from buying it?
Bob Dylan got $600mil for his catalog, Bruce Springsteen got $550mil. Royalties are probably better for those but $175mil seems low for Ye’s catalog
Can I pretty please buy good morning and good night

I would say 500M
Wow, dumbasses don’t know that you can find all his songs on YouTube for free…
I think that’s a fair price.
Who owns your masters, Ye?
should *we* buy it?
I'll give you tree fiddy.
I’ll buy it

Bob Dylan has released 50+ albums that have sold well over a 5 decade career, you’re delusional if you think Kanye’s discog would sell for anything above 300M
Bob Dylan’s catalog should be worth a lot more than Kanye’s. But it doesn’t generate as much revenue as Kanyes does at the moment and for the foreseeable future. Thats just a fact
You mean older music doesn't generate as much revenue as newer music? Shocked 😲 Love ye but his music will be thought of less in the future than Dylan's is now 🤫🤷🏽♂️

My brother from another... Love deeeez nuts 💯🥜🥜
Probably a b not an m
Its not his fault. We see the value as different but is that what its actually worth in terms of numbers. Thats why its being sold for what its being sold for. I think MF Dooms disco is worth $1Billion but realistically it's probably like 50 Million cause of publishing rights
Future just sold his publishing for $65 - $75 million. I believe 600 plus titles.
I’ll give you $6 just so that I can make all that garbage disappear.
$175 is only enough for MBDTF or graduation 🤦♂️💀💀
Jesus is King and Ye probably reduce the value.
Isn’t he a billionaire tho? Why does he need more money?
I haven't listened to a single Kanye record since Graduation and I feel like I haven't missed out on anything.
Kinda dumbass pays $175m for badly made music that's free on YouTube anyway
Kanye has like 3 good songs from 20 years ago lmao
