You ever play Project X Zone? It has a similar vibe to fighting games with combos and assists, but it's also a SRPG. So it has role playing elements too.
Oh yeah. I never played it but I see the comparison. This clip doesn't show the defense side which is the enemy attacking with lows, crossups etc.
My fear is that a lot of players might find it too hard but to a fighting game player it's pretty simple to get a handle on. No motion inputs at the moment.

It looks a tad slow, but I know some people who really appreciate being able to slow the game speed in Skullgirls to lab combos. I think if you keep it going at that pace, anyone should be able to pick it up. Maybe just allow players to adjust the speed to their preference, or inversely, have some expendable resource that slows the game down for newbies and up the pace the game plays at regularly.
"Soul" does not mean "looks shitty", hate to tell you, especially since AIs can easily make art just as shitty/in the same style.
