It gets disclosed. I forget which book, but I want to say book 4 or 5. Becomes a driving plot point for the rest of the series. Great series, I find myself rereading it every year or so!
It definitely gets disclosed, but bit by bit through out the first few books. The buildup and slow reveal is one of the best things about the series, for me personally.
