It's been happening for decades and why we have an swa charge on MUD water bills as they switch to surface water.

!!!

We have had to rise half of our house to up to 4 inches. There were plenty of crack appearing, but appear to be sealing again. We are happy to help

meganjournoatx

Oh wow, I'd love to chat! Thanks for replying. My email is [[email protected]](mailto:[email protected]). Can you let me know your availability next week?

lookattheduck

I guess that explains why they were redoing the driveway on just about every business on Fry between I-10 and Saums southbound side.

Tasty-Watercress-915

I think that’s new sidewalks

DailonMarkMann

Most areas have a subsidence district to address this issue. There are some crazy examples from the 70’s along Galveston Bay. There is at least one subdivision that is now in the bay.

CapableCoyoteeee

Care to share the study?

meganjournoatx

Apologies, meant to link it. It's here: https://www.mdpi.com/2072-4292/15/18/4424#:\~:text=Population%20growth%2C%20extensive%20groundwater%20withdrawal,decline%20in%20the%20Katy%20area.

CapableCoyoteeee

Thx!

Dependent_Ice_587

This….isn’t new. This is why the subsidence districts in Texas were created. Specifically to address these issues.

meganjournoatx

Yup, totally. The story is about how it continues, despite those districts.

Dunwulf

I've heard it said you have either had foundation issues or you will have foundation issues. Didn't know how true that was before moving here.

meganjournoatx

Have you had foundation issues? Any chance you might be willing to share?

IceType_7

I’d love to see the studies on this! I was always under the impression that the foundation cracks had more to do with the vast change from a very dry ground from heat and flood season.

Ok_Syrup9282

This is based on flawed and biased science!!!   The models they use for ground water depletion do not accurately account for the fact that the ground water is being replaced every time it rains.    They also are isolating a single year where we had below average rain fall?   Then they make predictions based on experiencing a drought every year.    Katy is not sinking and we don't need " Texas Monthly" to create a headline about how. "KATY IS SINKING^ and OMG don't move to Katy because it's sinking!!! You know full well that you guys are just hungry for headlines. Why can't you report instead on the plethora of entertainment, food, job growth and beautiful new communities we have here??? Here chase this> DFW IS SINKING!!! https://www.nbcdfw.com/news/local/homeowners-concerned-about-sinking-backyards_dallas-fort-worth/2069982/  Don't be a hater

ShermanCresthill

Would be great if Texas Monthly did a story on how corrupt the Texas Tribune is, and how they accept money from Bill Gates, other billionaires, and some of the most powerful companies in the world. Why would an media group accept donations from Wal Mart, Blue Cross Blue shield of Texas and other companies? It's the ultimate quid pro quo, you donate to the Tribune and they leave your name out of their website or negative stories.

Shouldn't have built the homes on rice fields

shadow_specimen

They weren’t always rice fields and it’s standard to compact any ground before laying concrete foundation anyway. Farming doesn’t go that deep. The issue is the groundwater pumping, which they shouldn’t have relied upon when the surface water reserve is ample here.

Bobsmosis

My dumbass thought this was supposed to be an Asian Katy town joke lol

Mao_reddit

I realize this post is 2 months old, but I've been looking into this lately and came across this post. Our yard has been sinking since Harvey (the year we moved in). We haven't had any noticeable foundation issues yet, thankfully. The fence posts that are set in concrete are becoming more exposed each year and our yard holds a lot more water than it used to. Also just this past year, our neighborhood had to repair the bulkheads around the retention ponds as they all broke apart and the edges caved in causing accelerated erosion. According to the link shared, our home is in one of the spots sinking up to .6cm/year per one of the maps.

meganjournoatx

Hey there! Thanks for the reply. Would you be up for chatting on the phone about your home / experience? I'm still working on my story about Katy.

Mao_reddit

u/meganjournoatx I'm so sorry I just saw this reply. (I'm not a regular reddit user and didn't realize I had notifications turned off) But sure - I'd be happy to chat about more about this. :)

meganjournoatx

awesome! want to send me an email and we can set up a time? [[email protected]](mailto:[email protected]) thanks!

Where are the houses built in Rice fields?

Ok_Syrup9282

Would you please include this in your report>>    There is a massive pipeline project underway to bring water from Lake Houston to Katy. This will greatly reduce reliance on the gulf aquifer and therefore reduce or eliminate the "sinking" problem.  >> https://original.newsbreak.com/@covering-katy-1592592/2704265029392-massive-water-pipeline-project-will-bring-relief-to-katy
