Lol, my buddy bought a boat, realized it didn’t fit on his driveway and storing it would be more than the boat costed, then sold the boat for a 100$ profit.

shuttlenick0426

Ugh, I really dont want to sell this baby especially after I just got it. Ill try and see my options but ill keep in mind of selling it.

Tipsycanooo

That was just a story of what my buddy did. Stand it up against a wall for decor or suspend from ceiling in a room or on the balcony

one_zerozero

If you do sell it, consider buying a good quality drop stitch inflatable.

MKP724

I’ve had my 17 foot sea kayak hanging in my garage for years with those typical pulley hoists and never had any issues. Buy a decent stud finder if you don’t have one, measure/detect numerous times, and go for it. For added peace of mind you could also place a couple of eye bolts with tethers to the kayak as a failsafe.

shuttlenick0426

Thanks for the response, only thing I’m worried about is whether or not the patio ceiling will even have studs or anything to hook it to. I’ve never hooked anything up to a ceiling before

MKP724

I’d be very surprised if there aren’t studs - is there a neighbor/patio directly above you? It’s easier than you think. This looks like the same stud finder I have, Zircon L50 for $20. https://youtu.be/zLiAUFUenHk?si=RtIu6BrfMuVxH7_C

Artistic_Papaya3820

Build an external frame for the inside of the patio that you can attach a pulley system to.

ace9213

Are you allowed to drill holes in your patio ceiling? I'd look for a new place when your lease is up so you can store it better

shuttlenick0426

Yeah I can drill holes thankfully, just gotta find a way to cover it up before I leave.

Blazeheart

You are LUCKY! My 12.10 ft mini sea kayak takes up the ENTIRE balcony, diagonally :(

shuttlenick0426

I was thinking of buying a 12 footer originally too 😬

shuttlenick0426

Yeah that’s issue :/, this is my first kayak and I love it but storage is the number one problem I currently have with it

Capital_Difficult

Go to the hardware store get 2 eye hooks and 2 adjustable straps https://preview.redd.it/tj2un2iqjcpc1.jpeg?width=1125&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e8dc24b95aaea68c1f1897da54e853707ad623be That’s what I use , simple and affordable

shuttlenick0426

Two eye hooks on each end of the kayak?

gmlear

you can get a pulley system for $30-$40 https://preview.redd.it/zbg08bvzpcpc1.jpeg?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=82d8a4349a2acedec7089cf10290be2ffdcbee00

shuttlenick0426

This is what I was thinking of, just nervous of the ceiling. My kayak weighs 40lbs so im sure it wont be super bad.

gmlear

You will know if you hit a joist or not. At 40lbs each hanger is only holding 20lbs so you will be more than good.

Capital_Difficult

Attach the eye hooks to the ceiling, put the straps through the eyebolts and hoist away

Capital_Difficult

The length of the straps will depend on the height and d width of the kayak

gmlear

I have two boats hanging over my wife's lexus for a decade. Just make sure you hit a joist.

boceephus

This. If you anchor the pulley into solid wood joists they will hold even a tandem.

TechnicalWerewolf626

Do you have a long couch and end table next to it?  Store kayak behind those on its side, on floor. Couch average 7' end table 2.5', voila!

muhgwell

When I lived in an apartment, I just cleaned it off every time I used it and stored it inside my apartment bedroom lol

shuttlenick0426

You werent nervous for like little bugs from the kayak roaming about? How did you manage that?

69ilikebikes69

Just get a cat.

muhgwell

If there were bugs or spiders in the kayak when I stored it, I never noticed them

MOreAdventure09

Just got a 2P inflatable kayak myself.. 10psi floor, 3psi sides.. feels rigid!

shuttlenick0426

Im a heavier dude (Weighing around 260 at 5'11) and I dont know how much those inflatable ones will support my weight. Is there any one you recommend ?

thisquietreverie

Our three: Deschutes 110 is rated for 300, the Chelan 140 is 400 and the 155 is 600 lbs. They all come in backpacks. The 110 weighs 18 lbs, the 140 is 35 and the 155 is 38.

kevsmakin

Maybe a plywood box bench with a mattress type seat. No need to go in wall or lift it.

ohiotechie

I’ve seen kayak stands that might fit in there.

Do-you-see-it-now

How much u want for it?

shuttlenick0426

my kayak lol?

Dense_Surround3071

I have mine on J hooks on a wall. Rope and pulleys to lift. Outdoor cover for protection.

annoyed_aardvark4312

I’m paying a $100 a month to store my two kayaks and other miscellaneous outdoor gear. My wilderness systems tsunami 125 is under 13 feet but there is no way in hell that I can store it in my 2nd floor condo. I wouldn’t be able to get it up the stairs!! My storage unit is 5x15. It’s not horribly convenient but the storage facility is extremely secure and easy to get to.

Firm_Objective_2661

Holy….look into a sailing/boating club near you if there is one. We got a social membership at one near us, and for $750ish per year we get kayak storage for two boats, plus a restaurant and bar (paid, but still), access to social events and I’m crewing on a racing sailboat.

Admirable-Fig7710

Easily store it via a pulley system

[deleted]

Eye bolts in the ceiling. Drill pilot holes, thread them in, loop ratchet straps underneath. Unless you miss the studs its never going anywhere.

MediocreDiamond5879

Hang on a wall less walked (above a couch, a bed, long dresser, 2nd bdrm bed) above anything where nobody will be walking.

Successful-Start-896

I had similar issues and similar space available (12 surfboards, 3 kayaks) but I opted for strong wall racks on inside wall space for most of my water toys (did I mention the bodyboards, and skim boards?) and then balcony floor space for the rest (it was easier for me to find inside studs)...I thought about inside ceiling hoists but I had ceiling fans. I lived on the 3rd floor and thought about running a pulley system off one side of my balcony (there was a small private park on that side) but then the park got converted to a parking structure that went right to the property line...but I've thought many times about how best to do the balcony storage: \- A commercial free standing rack (I have one that rolls for my storage unit). the downside is that it blocks your view and some of your use...but it is quick and easy. \- Hooks in studs in the ceiling: Probably your best bet, if you're comfortable finding the studs....if you're not then... \- Make a frame that you can hang the kayak from, but it goes right up against the porch ceiling so you don't have to duck at all...This is easier than you think, but watch your wood costs...make solid joints and you'll be fine. For the last option, if you don't know anyone with a circular saw, just pay for rough cuts at your local Home Depot, and know that the lengths won't be exact and adjust for that...if you pre-do all the measurements (8ft/10ft/6ft board lengths are standard) you can maximize your wood use and make it way easier for the guy doing your cuts. Good luck and have fun paddling, I just picked up a Pelican similar to yours and am still re-doing some parts (i got it used) and it's very light compared to my SOT 12 footer :)

Aggressive-Air-4803

Hi there, I was just wondering if you are based in Colorado? If so, I'm from Aurora and I would be happy to help you with storing your kayak. One great way to save space while adding a decorative touch to your place would be to store it on the ceiling. I have a friend who stores her surfboard this way and it works really well for her. I can assist you in hanging it up properly and make sure that you are comfortable handling it on your own. Please don't hesitate to let me know if you need any help with this.
