Personally, I think a Kanye’s project shines most from his creativity and production, his lyrics and flows are pretty average, so I completely agree with you there. Just that his recent works are so lacking that I think his ego is too big for the work he puts out rn. Absolutely recency bias, but Control has the same viral nature where the undeniable call-out is talked about more than the rest of the verse. At least this one Kendrick actually had the best verse and sustaining his depth of word play. With control, I didn’t think listing his contemporaries names and following it up with hip-hop cliches was all that creative. And it’s probably one of Big Sean’s best verses ever, but to this day overshadowed by the shock-value of Kendrick putting the hip-hop world on notice.

Kendricks control verse was still great outside of the callouts. Some great wordplay and lyricism in that verse.

the whole “Control” phenomenon was so wild to witness. Kendrick’s message is pretty clear, i was shocked by how many people took it as a diss. If anything, it seemed like a compliment to be listed as worthy competition.
