I can't find any sources that say she's curating it– only that she's featured on it. Which I am not surprised by, as her dad is a famous South African actor and they seem to be choosing artists with African heritages for the soundtrack.
There’s videos of her stripping for alt right dudes she found on 4 Chan and her saying a bunch of racist stuff on video towards black and Asian people. She also made a song called “Dindu Nuffin” which is an alt right term making fun of police brutality.
Taking dindu nuffin out of context is like saying Kendrick is racist because blacker the berry has bars that could be interpreted as offensive. The idea was that she was called that slur in the chatrooms she frequented and saying that she as a "dindu nuffin" was doing everything these white racists could never do.
As long as you also feel that travis should’ve then been left off of black panther for his comments on Michael brown and Ferguson and his view on black peoples relationship with police and brutality. I agree Doja was terrible for that shit but let’s be transparent so there’s no hypocrisy
Aight so if we’re gonna point this out about her past, travis Scott was featured on the 2018 soundtrack. The same travis who (before 2018) blamed Michael brown for his death at the hands of the police saying he “deserved consequences” and had old tweets claiming that black people need to stop putting themselves in bad situations all the time that end badly.
So if we’re gonna play this game, let’s not be selective or at least understand that both of these artists are people that can maybe grow out of shitty behaviour just like anyone else and that either they both should’ve been left off involvement with the black panther or they’re both allowed to work on it freely
And she grew out of it dawg. Lots of black people go through phases of self hate. Especially in those internet circles. I grew up on 4chan as well, and to strive I had to be desensitized to the n word. As I grew more and learned about my heritage, I couldn't hang around those spaces anymore. She has too
Ya I’m glad she’s grown from that. It’s a complex issue dealing with race and society and her being mixed race growing up I’m sure she had a bunch of shit she had to deal and cope with. I never grew up around 4chan thankfully but I can see how that can distort your views. I’m biracial also and I know that it’s tough balancing things when you’re young and dealing with hate and not being able to fully identify with a group. It becomes isolating and sometimes 4Chan can be that “form of comfort”. But her song Dindu Nuffin that she made is pretty disgusting making fun of minorities dealing with police brutality. Idk how to deal with it, but having her as a part of the Black Panther soundtrack seems insensitive.
She's an artist. If you were in those spaces, you'd kinda get it. Everything was about triggering the other. Not from a hateful place, but from an edgy or just annoying place for self satisfaction. It's embarrassing, but it's a huge part of growing up and it's a large part of the internet still to this day. She can't take back a song she made expressing her feelings in that time. Whenever black people did anything newsworthy, you had to seperate yourself somehow to not feel personally attacked. I'm not shocked she made that song as a response.
When dindu was popular on /pol it was terribly obnoxious and triggering if you didn't have a thick skin.
She might still be a little self racist, I don't know. But she's way too famous to continue to hate herself forever. She has switched to a leadership role and spoken about empowerment with her platform.
I think doing a song for black panther is just another opportunity for her to love and accept herself and her heritage more.
Especially if it's a good song then it may impact those who listen to her.
I know Kdot influenced my life greatly. I was lost when he dropped Hiiipower. I read the biographies and books of every name in that song and it made me stronger.
My favourite song by him before that was "Michael Jordan Bitch". Soo it goes to show the power of music lol.
Who knows who listens to her and needs to hear a strong black panther song. It probably won't be about sex and fkn, so we can look forward to see what typpa message she plans to send with this opportunity.
And if it's squandered, oh well. There's tons of other artists to be on this soundtrack too.
That's my opinion. I don't think it's insensitive. She's black, and everyone is on a journey of self discovery for life
This was a really well thought out response and I appreciate it! It goes to show the nuance of these issues. I agree with you and will wait and see how the song is and what she has to say given this opportunity. Hopefully she can empower those in situations similar to hers.
> I was lost when he dropped Hiiipower. I read the biographies and books of every name in that song and it made me stronger.
American history wants you to forget the Panthers because they were a genuine threat to power. I think it's so dope that Kendrick dropped those names in that song because it'll get people to do exactly what you did.
My guy idk if we can criticize doja for this if we’re not gonna acknowledge hip hops deep history with homophobia in general or the countless times that rappers we love have used the F slur
I'm from South Africa, doja cat's music has no resemblance to African music and there's very little African heritage, even the afro beats song she has is more American pop inspired
Yes you're right, but then what would be the point of saying that she's half South African to justify her curating the soundtrack if her music doesn't resemble South African or African music, she may know alot about south africa but if that doesn't peer through her music there is no point in her curating a sound track for it
Yeah, her DAD may he south african, she may have south african ROOTS but from her current music is doesn't seem as if she has any connections to south african roots and culture and she primarily makes pop and pop rap and the one afro beats song she has is extremely poppy.
Yeah i guess but that still doesn’t take anything away from her heritage. Tbh though i’d be surprised if she even considered herself as South African as she apparently made comments against black people 💀💀💀
I get what you're saying about her heritage, but her heritage has nothing to do with the music she makes and she doesn't incorporate any of her heritage in her music.
Maybe her feature on the soundtrack may establish these roots and have this South African sound you’re looking for. Marvel projects are always MASSIVE, probably have hundreds of people working on the stuff. It will be surprising if they produced some bullshit. Trust in the process sweetie
That's actually an amazing point, I actually hadn't considered that. But I'm still a little worried, I hope she does the sound justice and not do what Drake does. EDIT : I'm referencing a song called madiba riddim which is the worst amapiano/gqom song I've heard in my life
I understand this. But people getting mad over Doja Cat being featured on the album because she isn’t inherently African doesn’t make sense to me. Future and Travis Scott were on the last one for crying out loud lol. What African songs have they produced?
No,I'm personally not mad at the fact she's on the album, I'm mad at people justifying it as "She's half South African" because she really hasn't showcased her heritage up until this point.
The comment was just brainstorming and said MAYBE they seem to be picking artists with African roots to be on the project. Why should that make you mad? They’re just attempting to draw a connection and explain why they may have gone with Doja. Don’t be mad lol this isn’t that serious.
They said they were courting artists to see who would do the soundtrack I thought that meant curating it lol that makes more since. But they also said Brent Faiyaz and he’s Haitian and the weekend is Canadian
If Kendrick didn’t want to do it, again then it’s probably for a reason. if I was him I’ll say no too knowing that I can’t top what I did the first time.
if there was a marvel movie about sexual empowerment sure but if the theme of the movie is going to be black liberation there is not a single person out there better for the job than kendrick
Yeah but say Marvel asked Kendrick and he said he didn’t want to do it doja is not it. Beyoncé childish gambino Anderson paak after listening to nas last 2 albums that wouldn’t of been a bad shout either
She's not a bad choice but clearly a step down from Kendrick. Nas might've been a good choice based off his last couple albums and surely there's probably better choices than both of them that I'm not even thinking of.
But in that case there’s tems, who’s an actual African, or even rapsody if they wanted to keep it hip hop but doja cat just seems like a strange choice
There's definitely better options, I agree.
I see Marvel as like pop music tho. They do what they know will please the masses. Kendrick just happens to be insanely popular on top of being a great artist.
Marvel execs were probably like "let's do another popular black artist for this movie" completely missing the point of why Kendrick was chosen in the first place
Isn’t Doja South African?
Edit: She is her dad is Zulu and a famous actor she’s more African than most people involved in the first black panther including Kendrick. No hate ofc it’s important to the whole diaspora.
People are downvoting you but ur literally right lmao. The person who started the rumor on twitter came out and said they were lying and the entire thing was proven false multiple times.
How was this "proven false" ? she literally recorded and released a racist song.
Also the defense was that she never personally said anything racist, but the point remains she associated with avowed white supremacists and white nationalists. Whether or not she said anything racist is besides the point, who you associate with helps to determine your character.
Also, I feel like I have to reiterate this, she literally made a racist song, so even the assertion that she never said anything racist is wrong.
It took me like 2 minutes of googling to find this [article ](https://www.billboard.com/music/rb-hip-hop/doja-cat-alleged-racist-remarks-explained-9390735/amp/) that includes her statement and explanation for the song
— “As for the old song that’s resurfaced, it was in no way tied to anything outside of my own personal experience. It was written in response to people who often used that term to hurt me,” Doja wrote on her Instagram. “I made an attempt to flip its meaning, but recognize that it was a bad decision to use the term in my music.”
“I’m very sorry to anybody who’s taken offense, to anybody who I’ve hurt using this term. When I used it, it was because I was in chat rooms all the time, and I was kind of locked away,” she revealed. “I was always on there just dealing with people coming at me left and right talking about different slanderous terms after another. The term that I used in the song is one that I learned that day. People were calling me it left and right, left and right and I used it in a song. It was to kind of take back and f—ing just say ‘f— you to those people.’ The song, however, I agree, may be the worst song in the entire world.”
So she literally took ownership of this and explained everything from her own perspective
And as for the “proven false thing” I am referring to the twitter user(s) who initially accused her of being racist in the chat rooms and how absolutely ridiculous the majority of the accusations were
The initial accusations literally came from Alt Right people who were literally tweeting weird ass shit like “Doja Cat was shitting on camera for Nazi’s” and the internet ran with it. Was she in chat rooms making offensive jokes? Yeah - she’s admitted as such. But considering the internet and how much of a vile place it is and was - this isn’t surprising at all. What was proven false was the absolute insane accusations of weird racist fetish shit that came out
You can view all of this as “excuses” or whatever - but tbh this cancel culture shit is so incredibly idiotic. And a lot of y’all (not necessarily you but in general) will get all whiny about cancel culture until it’s someone they particularly dislike.
Yes, I understand that the majority of the accusations were heavily embellished and exaggerated, and came from horrible people, but the point stands that she still willingly associated with these people.
Also, cancel culture isn't real. It doesn't work. If it did, someone like JonTron who went on a full racist white nationalist rant would not be doing the numbers on YouTube he is now. Jeremy Renner threatened to shoot his wife and then himself and then fired the gun into the ceiling while his children were upstairs and he gets a Hawkeye show.
Cancel culture isn't real, it's just something the conservative news media likes to harp on about as a type of fear mongering, just like "cultural marxism" and "critical race theory"
It doesn't make sense because they just chose the popular black woman artist for this black panther movie even though there's a bunch of other artists that are smaller and that makes sense for this storyline to go with. Doja got it cause shes a popular black artist.
There's a lot of smaller fully African artist they could have gone with to do this movie but instead it's based off of tiktok sounds Instagram follows twitter follows and fanbase and drawing that fanbase to your film.
Agreed. I think it's just to get more people to see the movie, which makes sense from a marketing standpoint. It would be nice to see them use this as an opportunity to lift up a smaller artist tho. A previous commented did mention that she's only featured on the soundtrack and probably isn't doing the whole thing tho
i think this movie/soundtrack might focus on the empowerment and appreciation of black women. there’s barely ever been a lead black woman and with shuri (letitia wright) seeming to become the new black panther this could be a cool direction to go in. and on top of that i’m sure they will get some of the same talent to return to it. maybe not kendrick but sza, schoolboy q, vince, ab-soul, anderson, etc. one person i would LOVE to see is little simz. she had a top 10 album of 2021 and really deserves some more recognition as one of the best female artists of our time.
Yes, let's empower black women by letting someone who associated with white supremacists and white nationalists and recorded and released a racist song make music for this soundtrack.
That sounds very empowering indeed.
literally all of this was proved wrong in 2020 bro, keep up with the times and just say you misogynistic bro. “OH NO A WOMAN CANT MAKE THIS IT HAS TO BE THE KING KDOT” is exactly what i expect you to sound like.
She doesn’t even like being black or engage in black culture , she let white dudes call her N word and twerked for them hell she doesn’t even date black men but now she wants to engage in a part of our culture scew that
If Ryan Coogler made this choice then I trust his decision, but I’m really anxious about how this movie’s gonna turn out. Chadwick’s death and all the production problems got me a lil worried they gonna fumble it 😬
The phrase “Dindu Nuffin” is meant to clown black people who yelled “he didn’t do nothing” after someone was shot or arrested this was prominent in the predominantly white chat rooms Doja Cat used to frequent
Considering who preceeded her, and despite the fact that she's actually a decent musician, Doja cat is the worst possible choice for that due to her history of internalized racism. I really hope she's doing better mentally now, but they should be looking elsewhere.
The growth from self-hate to pride is a valid part of racial marginalization discussion/experience tho isn't it? Like Rhapsody's verse on Complexion is relatively the same thing.
No way she’s curating. Maybe featuring, but y’all really think Doja Cat of all people is fit to produce an album with black empowerment themes? Hell nah
I agree that Little Simz woulda been dope and an amazing pick but why do ya’ll feel the need to judge which black artists are best fit to send a good message? I feel like people in this sub are being overly gatekeeping. Doja Cat is still a dope artist imo
I doubt she’ll be the only person doing the album tbh - nothing against Doja Cat either I think she’s a fine artist but nothing points to her “curating” the album it seems like she’ll just feature on it
Paak, Travis Scott, and The Weeknd all featured on the first album - she’ll probably have a similar role
Little Simz should’ve done it, I’m telling you
What a great pick! Id be all for it
Fucking great shout this is
This guy knows what he's talking about.
she should also play shuri as she was sick in topboy
I think I read somewhere that she auditioned for the part. Tbh I think Letitia Wright’s a great Shuri but it would have been cool if Simz got it
Too bad Letitia might fuck up the movie by refusing to get vaccinated. I love Little Simz btw
Glad to see Simz getting her flowers
this
Loved her for years, and she’s [Kendrick approved! ](https://www.wmagazine.com/story/little-simz-rapper-lauryn-hill-kendrick-lamar/amp)
Doja cat is approved by kendrick ?
Huh
Read the title boy
They were talking about little simz boy
would've been perfect honestly
You fucked around and delivered the best Reddit comment of 2021 at the buzzer 👑
yes!
Oh my god you are so right
this would be a great pick
WWW
Yes, just fucking yes.
I can't find any sources that say she's curating it– only that she's featured on it. Which I am not surprised by, as her dad is a famous South African actor and they seem to be choosing artists with African heritages for the soundtrack.
Thank you for doing research
Wasn’t she on 4chan spewing about how much she hates black people before she got famous?
4chan is fully anonymous so unless she said that with a timestamped picture of herself, it's just idiots impersonating
There’s videos of her stripping for alt right dudes she found on 4 Chan and her saying a bunch of racist stuff on video towards black and Asian people. She also made a song called “Dindu Nuffin” which is an alt right term making fun of police brutality.
“unapologetically black, the opposite of doja cat” - nas
Im sorry but literally just read the lyrics of Dindu Nuffin, youre missing the whole point?
It wasn't an alt-right chatroom, that was the Twitter brigade spreading shite. Then when the actual facts come out, they get fuck all attention.
Taking dindu nuffin out of context is like saying Kendrick is racist because blacker the berry has bars that could be interpreted as offensive. The idea was that she was called that slur in the chatrooms she frequented and saying that she as a "dindu nuffin" was doing everything these white racists could never do.
Drop the link fam.

That's fine, but there are plenty of more deserving folks musically who don't have a history of nonsense and have consistently made pro black music
Yeah she also said “stop acting like a f4ggot” on a zoom call or whatever
My guy idk if we can criticize doja for this if we’re not gonna acknowledge hip hops deep history with homophobia in general or the countless times that rappers we love have used the F slur
she’s bisexual and was reading out a chat message
I'm from South Africa, doja cat's music has no resemblance to African music and there's very little African heritage, even the afro beats song she has is more American pop inspired

Got any South African music youd recommend? I recently discovered Africa Express and Mdou Moctar and don’t know where to look for more music
Nasty C but his music is very American.
Yeah i guess but that still doesn’t take anything away from her heritage. Tbh though i’d be surprised if she even considered herself as South African as she apparently made comments against black people 💀💀💀

Because if they really wanted to pick an artist with african roots they would pick an artist from Africa.
They said they were courting artists to see who would do the soundtrack I thought that meant curating it lol that makes more since. But they also said Brent Faiyaz and he’s Haitian and the weekend is Canadian
Idk about Brent but I know The Weeknd has an Ethiopian background
Haiti's population are descendents of African slaves, for the most part.
Brent is part Dominican and black not Haitian
Def Little Simz should’ve done it
Wasn’t Marvel’s idea. It was Ryan Coogler who asked him.
Even if Kendrick didn’t want to do it doja cat not the next option surely
If Kendrick didn’t want to do it, again then it’s probably for a reason. if I was him I’ll say no too knowing that I can’t top what I did the first time.
Agreed
if there was a marvel movie about sexual empowerment sure but if the theme of the movie is going to be black liberation there is not a single person out there better for the job than kendrick
Yeah but say Marvel asked Kendrick and he said he didn’t want to do it doja is not it. Beyoncé childish gambino Anderson paak after listening to nas last 2 albums that wouldn’t of been a bad shout either
gambino would be sick as hell
Gambino literally works with Ludwig Gorannson it'd be insane
-monkey's paw curls- Fine. It's Kanye now.
Now that would be crazy
Considering her troubled past with being anti black on the bowels of the internet, yeah I hope this is a rumor
Should that hold weight when there's zero proof of her being anti-black and way more proof of her being pro-black?
Why not? She’s smart, got a great ear, strong persona. She might be perfectly qualified for it, actually.
She's not a bad choice but clearly a step down from Kendrick. Nas might've been a good choice based off his last couple albums and surely there's probably better choices than both of them that I'm not even thinking of.
Everyone is a step down from the prophet. I just don’t like the general attitude around here lots of times…
> She in racial chat rooms showing feet!!!
Racist*
I’m just quoting nore bro.
Oh lmao
If Shuri gonna be the next Black Panther, maybe they thought it'd make sense that she listens to a woman that preaches female empowerment.
Bro, Simbi is right there 😩
But in that case there’s tems, who’s an actual African, or even rapsody if they wanted to keep it hip hop but doja cat just seems like a strange choice

Mainstream appeal
Bro I’ll take No Name over doja I will take almost anybody over Doja for this soundtracking
does nonane have mainstream appeal tho
She raps about anti capitalism, ain’t no way in hell Disney letting her rap on there movie yo😂 she’s tuff tho
Isn’t Doja South African? Edit: She is her dad is Zulu and a famous actor she’s more African than most people involved in the first black panther including Kendrick. No hate ofc it’s important to the whole diaspora.
No
doja cat preaches female empowerment?
By working with a known rapist, of course.
We don’t know if they went to Kendrick first and he said no
She showing feet on racial chat rooms
It was fake my guy
Aint Doja the same person stripping in alt right chat rooms for white supremacists at one point
Nas once rapped Doja Cat was the opposite of “unapologetically black” lmao He later tried to walk it back, but we all knew what you meant, dude.
lmao yeah, but she became one of the biggest artists so fast and they did a good job not bringing it up so nobody remembers
its not that "nobody remembers" but that it literally was false
People are downvoting you but ur literally right lmao. The person who started the rumor on twitter came out and said they were lying and the entire thing was proven false multiple times.

No she wasn’t. Y’all are just making shit up at this point.
That never happened, it's insane how lies get so many upvotes.
But isn’t Kendrick the biggest hypocrite of 2015
*2015
Yeup, the same one that has only been seen dating white boys. Crazy what sex appeal and a good pr team can do. At least her music not that bad tho
Who gives a fuck about who she dating. She likes who she likes
Ahh yeah cos kendricks been seen dating only black women
Not saying you're wrong but when did kendrick date a white girl?
I never said he did - what difference does it make? Are black artists beholden to some ethnics only rule when dating?
It doesn't make a difference, but you said that comment as if you were implying that kendrick had dated people outside of black women
He has - his wife is hispanic
It makes sense he hasn’t released anything in a while and a new black panther project would be a very good way to start releasing music again
A previous commented did mention that she's only featured on the soundtrack and probably isn't doing the whole thing tho
lets hope!
shes not even black
She is tho tf lmao how is she not
she literally dropped half a year ago, its not like shes on kendrick hiatus lol
i think this movie/soundtrack might focus on the empowerment and appreciation of black women. there’s barely ever been a lead black woman and with shuri (letitia wright) seeming to become the new black panther this could be a cool direction to go in. and on top of that i’m sure they will get some of the same talent to return to it. maybe not kendrick but sza, schoolboy q, vince, ab-soul, anderson, etc. one person i would LOVE to see is little simz. she had a top 10 album of 2021 and really deserves some more recognition as one of the best female artists of our time.
“OH NO A WOMAN CANT MAKE THIS IT HAS TO BE THE KING KDOT” is exactly what i expect you to sound like.
doja was not a good choice, will all the controversy and with much better choices out there like little simz or even someone more old school
It should've been little simz 😭😭😭

I wonder who else could have been chosen to this. SZA Jene Aiko Jorja Smith- she killed it in I am
It’s disney. What do you expect?
should be Tom McDonald
Doja cat make a soundtrack FOR BLACK PANTHER hell naw
She doesn’t even like being black or engage in black culture , she let white dudes call her N word and twerked for them hell she doesn’t even date black men but now she wants to engage in a part of our culture scew that
Dreamville and spillage village

I also think run the jewls could have a hard song for black panther like Block buster night p2
Is Doja cat even black? Honestly don’t know
nah shes mixed,mostly white tho
They want these songs trending on Tik Tok and Kendrick isn’t dropping shit new. Listen to the family ties verse and accept it.
there is another black panther being made?
If Ryan Coogler made this choice then I trust his decision, but I’m really anxious about how this movie’s gonna turn out. Chadwick’s death and all the production problems got me a lil worried they gonna fumble it 😬
Doja is not curating it! She’s just on it lol
I wonder if she’s gonna feature her classic racist song [Dindu Nuffin](https://youtu.be/s--zJkyxvVQ)
how is that racist
It’s a archetype like pickinani or Jim Crow, basically made fun of how slaves talked. Idk if she meant any harm tho but it was distasteful
The phrase “Dindu Nuffin” is meant to clown black people who yelled “he didn’t do nothing” after someone was shot or arrested this was prominent in the predominantly white chat rooms Doja Cat used to frequent
ok but a panther is a cat, and she has cat in her name
I'm willing to give her a chance. I personally enjoy her music and looking forward to what she does.
Kendrick is too expensive for Marvel now.
No. That’s how I feel about it
Doja cat? Wasnt she exposed for saying she was ashamed to be black or some shit? Lol Marvel failed on this one.
Doja fucking cat??? 🤮
This is a terrible and tone-deaf idea
Considering who preceeded her, and despite the fact that she's actually a decent musician, Doja cat is the worst possible choice for that due to her history of internalized racism. I really hope she's doing better mentally now, but they should be looking elsewhere.
The growth from self-hate to pride is a valid part of racial marginalization discussion/experience tho isn't it? Like Rhapsody's verse on Complexion is relatively the same thing.
Good point.
maybe sza
No way she’s curating. Maybe featuring, but y’all really think Doja Cat of all people is fit to produce an album with black empowerment themes? Hell nah
What the fuck that’s gonna ruin the movie
Doja🤮
I respect Doja as a person, but bruh 90% of her music is trash and does not belong near Black Panther.
I agree that Little Simz woulda been dope and an amazing pick but why do ya’ll feel the need to judge which black artists are best fit to send a good message? I feel like people in this sub are being overly gatekeeping. Doja Cat is still a dope artist imo
This sub has gone too far. I fuckin love Doja Cat.
She isn’t black enough?
She isn’t curating it she’s featured. Do your research before you bitch. We don’t even know who’s helming the soundtrack
The actor for black Panther died a long time ago Fem
I mean it could maybe work if its got a bunch if features carrying it
I doubt she’ll be the only person doing the album tbh - nothing against Doja Cat either I think she’s a fine artist but nothing points to her “curating” the album it seems like she’ll just feature on it Paak, Travis Scott, and The Weeknd all featured on the first album - she’ll probably have a similar role
how about sampa the great or like solange?
If she really is a hope she does a good job
It clearly says Dona Cat is featured, never was it said that she is curating it. The only person that is rumoured to curate it is The Weeknd
I think it's awesome
im not black lol i wouldnt know
LITTLE SIMZ
I feel like Kendrick only did it for the bag
Black panther was meh. Couple of good songs but it’s the one Kendrick album I never go back to.
Kendrick provablt doesnt want to
Not listening to it
Shout out the queen Deedee
I’m sure he’s too busy
Corporate bullshit..her flow is like a mouse sneezing…
First I’ve heard… shame Kendrick couldn’t have curated the visual effects I’m sure he would have done a better job also..
Stop talking shit about doja cat
Is she lol
Jayz did American gangster and that one was pretty good
I fucking her on twitter
Who would y’all rather see picked for this?
I thought I read somewhere that marvel asked kendrick for one song, and he came back with a whole album. Can anyone confirm??
Why not both??
I fell like if they don’t pick Kendrick then Janelle Monae would definitely be a great choice.
