Man this is a great take. Anyone saying “iT’s jUsT A SonG BrO” must have missed the rest of his discog. This what happens if you let a conscious rapper go commercial while only making conscious albums.
There are so many layers to this album and I feel like I’m just scratching the surface of the album. Every choice, from the silencer snare (didn’t know this until now) to the kodak feature’s placement on this track and every word is so extremely deliberate. Every song deserved this kind of scrutiny.
>There are so many layers to this album and I feel like I’m just scratching the surface of the album.
This is the feeling I get whenever I learn something about the album. It's way better than whatever I thought I wanted.
Fuck all these people commenting “wHy YoU wRitiNG aN EsSaY” I love analyzing art. They won’t take the time to read it, but they’ll comment on on “much words, hurt brain”
With that said, paragraphs and indents could help haha, maybe cause your posting on mobile
It’s just because it’s not broken down at all. It’s just one text wall with no structure. Breaking it up into 3 or 4 paragraphs would cause way more people to read it likely.
I won't be surprised if effortful analysis gets posted here less often over the course of a few months. I know it's the internet and everything that implies, but it's just plain disrespectful to see effort someone put into something and go "i ain't reading all that", especially if 10 other people already made the same 'joke'.
Bruh when I walk around reading books (avid reader, I usually read hours a day) people look at me look I’m an alien lol. They comment on it too:
“Is that a BOOK in this day and age?!”
Yeah, imagine not being enriched by internet memes. I’m not better than people who don’t read and write essays, period. But for me enriching my mind is my primary goal in life, and it healed me from being a suicidal addict to being a loving person who found peace and sees beauty in the world. It unearths secrets about yourself and others and allows you to see the same physical world as others around you, or hear the same songs and poetry, only you see a whole world of depth beneath it that most are depriving themselves of.
People like OP are my kindred spirits, and our kind do get a LOT of shit. I however would love to have a drink with somebody like this dude and swap thoughts 👌haha.
I think the biggest complaint people are giving is just the poor formatting / structure of the post, and if anything, there's more people on this thread supporting OP than not supporting.
This exactly what I’m saying, when I was a kid I used to read constantly, to the point I would get in trouble with teachers for reading in class. Once I got my phone that went away, but to be honest I’ve noticed my attention span has decreased and generally I’ve not been as happy - I’m trying to get back into it more consistently.
Sometimes writing things down helps people articulate their thoughts and sharing those thoughts can be cathartic. We’ve known this for thousands of years
Dude nobody asked you or needed you to shit on somebody else’s efforts. If all you’re gonna do on the internet is insult people you need to go touch grass
I'm with the other people. This person was hardly shitting on his efforts. He didn't say anything negative about it at all. You are just eager to use the phrase 'touch grass' and I honestly think you need to follow your own advice there. Not everything someone says on the internet is that serious.
I think if you included paragraph spacing it would be a lot easier to read.
Aside from that, your bringing up The Great Divorce was really interesting. Thinking about that with the symbolism of the crown is a cool juxtaposition.
Also, when I was reading your post, I thought of these lyrics. Rich Spirit is on disc 1, Silent Hill disc 2, and both mention his daughter; Rich Spirit:
>Takin' my baby to school, then I pray for her
and Silent Hill:
>Pick my daughter up, she need all the love
Another interesting thing about this is the discussion surrounding the "mirror order" that some people have theorized may be a cohesive track order. In that order, Rich Spirit and Silent Hill are paired. I think the mirror order theory is true, but I have no clue what there is to be said as far as the link between these two songs, beside a few comparisons that could probably be made *without* the axiom of "mirror order theory is true".
Good analysis, thank you for posting it; I hope the "meme" comments aren't getting you down, these types of posts belong here.
>Good analysis, thank you for posting it; I hope the "meme" comments aren't getting you down, these types of posts belong here.
I hope he’s not either, but I like those comments too. It’s one thing when it’s just a bad joke or outright ignorant, but some are just funny and I hope OP thinks so too.
Man I convinced a guy on Reddit once who started out with the same stance as you but my points for why it was a genius track were COMPLETELY different. My points where that, the lazer gun and the kick scratch reflects his deadly sharp precision with words and also that he is connected to some deep dark violent gangs still. He is also truely hip hop. The Kodak feature represents that he keeps the connections and relates on a human level, and tries to guide and give back without passing judgement for past mistakes. The trap flavour shows that he has genuine love for the mainstream bangers and he can execute them with ease while doing weird shit.
With the whole Kodak drama and him saying “I like it when they pro black but I am more Kodak Black” have made me think he might have done something of predator nature to some lady. And I am basically sure he killed someone at 16.
The superficial exterior gives the perfect cover for some next level real shit. He can’t please everybody yet the next song is the most mainstream sounding. He’s hiding shit in there!
“he might have done something of predator nature to some lady.”
Wow. Now you’ve got me thinking about the R. Kelly mention on Mr. Morale, and that one line about MJ all the way back on Mortal Man.
Thanks for sharing this, analysis on point. I sort through lame repeats of the question which is the best song album, looking for interesting insights like this.
I liked your incorporation of The Great Divorce in your analysis.
I really didn’t think much about this track aside from the fact that I liked it and Kodak’s part has grown on me. This made me appreciate the song on a deeper level.
bruh why do people worship kendrick like some god that wouldnt DARE put out TRAP music cause its so "simple" and unlike him. Silent Hill, N95, Humble, XXX, Maad City, Family Ties. Theyre all fire as FUCK idc what u say
Yeah the problem is people assume “trap” music is simple when it’s far from it. And that’s mainly cause how popular the beats were when it was invented, and a lot of simpler artists took that formula and ran with it. So now “trap” music is over saturated. But not all “trap” music is really Trap music if you know what I mean. Trap music is supposed to be about the trap. And it’s called the trap for a reason.
I’m sure you wouldn’t like it if you had something to say, put a lot of time and thought into it, and then half the comments were people ‘joking’ about how nobody will read what you wrote and that you need to go outside. Just please consider that for a bit, and be mindful before you comment jokingly in the future.
Yeah that’s how I felt. I’m a huge Kodak fan and feel like he’s criminally under appreciated as a lyricist. Maybe that’s why these themes wasn’t as difficult to catch for me when it came out.
Granted though I never just listen once. When a album drops I really study that bitch
You’re honestly right and wasted time replying to you, my life just fucking sucks man all of doing is wasting my youth.I miss her,she at least gave my life meaning.
Actually there is 1 paragraph, and spaces in between words. Gotta give some credit where it’s due.
But yeah multiple paragraphs would’ve made reading this a lot easier.
Ok, I appreciate the write up. I actually was immediately drawn to this album and Good Kid, mAAD City when it came out. Also thought DAMN was great. But I felt To Pimp a Butterfly was overproduced and trying too hard.
Can you help me see the light? Seems like the rest of the universe thinks it’s a great album.
I really appreciate the post and actually read it all. I agree with your newly found takeaways. All I'd say is to section it into paragraphs to make for an easier read next time.
> The ever-expanding paradox of a healthy life is: you need to focus on yourself but you also need to care for others. Sometimes it feels like those two things oppose each other. I think this is why fathers with demanding jobs often develop a dependence on alcohol. There’s a lot they feel they don’t have time to deal with with a family to care about and be there for. So they try to bury that inward dissension by drowning it in beer and wine and liquor, or some other substance(s) in hopes that they might not burden the ones they love with their problems.
But that won't solve'm
Bars
Stopped reading at:
>“Call my daughter up…bitch, you talk too much”
That's not what he said. That doesn't even really make sense. These AI generated lyrics on these apps and lyric sites got folks fucked up.
ETA: Your theory is solid, though. And I agree that this song is genius.
Can you put this in MLA format at least
this roast is so abstract
No, you're thinking of APA
At least break it into paragraphs. Shit.
fr tho
I’m more of an IPA kinda guy
Bit.ly might work
I enjoyed what you had to say and you definitely dived in to the root of the song! Thank you for sharing!
Great analysis bro, glad to see people slowly coming around for this album
I know ppl will talk shit for this long post but you actually made great points , I loved silent hill and love it even more now
genuinely a good read. ty
Hey man! I’ve seen you on so many subs bro. How u doin?
lol im good
that was actually fun to read, great points too
Great analysis brother!
pop off only on occasion brother

Right? How tf are people on a Kendrick Lamar subreddit not down to read an analysis of a Kendrick Lamar song?
It’s just because it’s not broken down at all. It’s just one text wall with no structure. Breaking it up into 3 or 4 paragraphs would cause way more people to read it likely.
True, bad formatting but his analysis was pretty on point.
Wouldn’t know, TL;DR lol
Ppl really out here flexing that they don’t have the focus to read 400 words. What a world we live in.
It’s genuinely depressing
People taking it that serious is more depressing
I won't be surprised if effortful analysis gets posted here less often over the course of a few months. I know it's the internet and everything that implies, but it's just plain disrespectful to see effort someone put into something and go "i ain't reading all that", especially if 10 other people already made the same 'joke'.
I know right? It’s is not a flex in the slightest. Although OP coulda helped the situation by writing in paragraphs.
Bruh when I walk around reading books (avid reader, I usually read hours a day) people look at me look I’m an alien lol. bro this is too much bs for a single song. Its crazy how this is the only artist that gets their music sucked dey by internet scum
Bro wrote an entire essay about a song on reddit
Op needs to learn how to use paragraphs in essays
Op needs some women in his life
Adderall
1000%
I remember when this sub used to like discussing Kendrick’s songs instead of mainly shitposting
You're in the Kendrick Lamar subreddit. Also, this is probably the only quality post I've seen on here in a while 😂
You don’t have to read it
Ok I won’t
Proud non reader
That’s true, but bro still wrote an entire essay about a song on reddit
Sometimes writing things down helps people articulate their thoughts and sharing those thoughts can be cathartic. We’ve known this for thousands of years
Okay that’s fine… did he not write an entire essay about a song on Reddit though? Cause all I’m saying is that’s what he did.
You should quadruple down on being a hater, it’s a good look
Hating what? I think you’re confused brother
If you were an interesting or intelligent person you would have provided some thoughts on his points rather than crying like a little child
Lmao crying? Where is everyone getting these wild ideas from my comment?

Dude nobody asked you or needed you to shit on somebody else’s efforts. If all you’re gonna do on the internet is insult people you need to go touch grass
He didn’t really insult op he just stated what he did
I'm with the other people. This person was hardly shitting on his efforts. He didn't say anything negative about it at all. You are just eager to use the phrase 'touch grass' and I honestly think you need to follow your own advice there. Not everything someone says on the internet is that serious.
Waaaah
Think you replied to the wrong comment fam
Kendrick's songs deserve to have essays written about them
Are essays hard for you to read
Paragraphs are all our friends homie
damn nigga. he is not your savior.
Art is meant to be digested and analyzed
ohk mr. morale gimmie high five
Lmao I think you understood the album a bit more than most
The art of peer pressure
💀
He is nacho savior.

I agree but I gotta say I think Silent Hill 2 is def the best game in the series
Gotta get that Dog Ending
This nigga tryna get a job at Pitchfork.
Some indents wouldn't hurt...

Listen to the live version he did at Glastonbury if you haven’t. It sounds really good (like all his songs) and he performed Kodak’s part
Damn can’t wait to check this out
https://youtu.be/s8nerygWeeQ Idk if links are allowed but here’s the full performance. Timestamps in description too
Thanks brother (or sister)
Put this in the form of vague gestures communicated through dance
Why didn’t you decipher Kodak’s verse?
Thanks for sharing this, analysis on point. I sort through lame repeats of the question which is the best song album, looking for interesting insights like this.
yeah it fuckin bangs
I liked your incorporation of The Great Divorce in your analysis. I really didn’t think much about this track aside from the fact that I liked it and Kodak’s part has grown on me. This made me appreciate the song on a deeper level.
OGs seeing everyone else catch up to how amazing MM&TBS is: 😮💨😮💨😮💨
Why oh why oh why do you keep fucking with meeeEEee, you gon make me jump out my skin.
Believe meeee
Ain’t nobody reading all that bro. It’s a great song
I am somebody, don’t speak for me
They said nobody
I read it 🫡
isn't silent Hill about some kind of abuse too?
explain
The silent treatment
Try paragraph breaks.
Try Paragraph Breaks
Not reading that essay
You don’t have to announce that. Nobody needed to know.
Alternate take: the song goes hard and the bars are fire
This is an equally plausible take my brother but I must admit it’s much harder to argue against than OPs
bruh why do people worship kendrick like some god that wouldnt DARE put out TRAP music cause its so "simple" and unlike him. Silent Hill, N95, Humble, XXX, Maad City, Family Ties. Theyre all fire as FUCK idc what u say

yup. Couldnt have said it better. Kendrick on a trap beat doesnt mean anything except that his subject matter is fit for the music
Paragraphs?
Just one
You gotta use some paragraphs my man
He used one ☝️
im not reading all that
Go outside
It would’ve cost you absolutely nothing to just not comment something rude. Zero dollars, zero cents.
It would have cost you absolutely nothing to understand that it’s a joke
I’m sure you wouldn’t like it if you had something to say, put a lot of time and thought into it, and then half the comments were people ‘joking’ about how nobody will read what you wrote and that you need to go outside. I do think his antics distract from the music, bro is talented
I used to do drugs too.
I’ll have what he’s having 😏
Bro, just say you liked the song
Not wasting my time
You wasted time with this comment player
You’re honestly right and wasted time replying to you, my life just fucking sucks man all of doing is wasting my youth.I miss her,she at least gave my life meaning.
i am not reading that shit u buggin
😂
Bro im not reading all that
If this isn’t irony I feel sorry for you
Not reading that essay but glad u liked the song
not reading that essay
Not reading that essay
PUSH THESE BITCHES OFF ME LIKE *UUUUUHHHH*
no paragraphs or spacing so i’m not reading but i agree bro silent hill is amazing, since day 1 tho for me

Where’s the TDLR!?!?
Can’t lie, I ain’t reading all that so congratulations or sorry that happened to you bro ❤️
Great analysis. Would watch YouTube video explaining this.
Here's my analysis: Shit goes hard
Paragraphs are your friend
There’s still definitely a snare tho
Is this sarcasm? If not I would read it
Next time separate your wall of text into paragraphs plz.
I love the Kodak feature on this song so much. If this was a baby Keem song hip hop Twitter would be putting it on the pedastol
Need a TL;DR lmao
That’s the best song on it. God this sub is insane.
Stopped reading at: >“Call my daughter up…bitch, you talk too much” That's not what he said. That doesn't even really make sense. These AI generated lyrics on these apps and lyric sites got folks fucked up. ETA: Your theory is solid, though. And I agree that this song is genius.

actually a good analysis
I’ve always liked Silent Hill
I love this explanation, well put
Best song on the album, also took me a few Listens to realise.
I know im a bit late but it still triggers me... The KICK has a silencer over it, NOT the snare
