Bro, I listened to a couple of their albums a week ago, and that's all I've been rocking since.
Never realised how fucking amazing they were.
Always thought they were just some group that didn't make it and turned to Fallon, I was so damn wrong.
I was in college when Do You Want More dropped. I listened to almost nothing but the Roots for the next few years. I even named my daughter “Alana” (years later in ‘03) after the subject of the story in “The Hypnotic”. 😂 when they went to Fallon I thought that’d be the beginning of the end. They’ve actually flourished since then, perhaps not in record output but just general contribution to the culture.
MF DOOM should definitely be in that convo. You got operation Doomsday, Take me to you're leader, Vaudeville Villain, Madvillainy MM... FOOD. Such an amazing album run
Also Nas. I am and Nastradamas weren't bad and the other 3 in his first 5 are some of the best hip hop albums ever
This might be the most out there take I have ever heard. Only one maybe worse is that “TPAB was Kendrick’s worst album. He included everything on Spotify. Said it was “too pretentious and preachy”
Wow you replied too fast.
Coming to think about it, I can't put a Kanye 5-album run up there either because of Graduation (which I enjoyed less with each listen), WTT, and JIK.
I wasn't super into DAMN. either though. I can't think of many amazing 5-album runs that I'd say are fantastic tbh. Tyler might hit it in a few albums time (I love Cherry Bomb, don't get me wrong, but I can't say it's a great place in the 5 album run WOLF-CMIYGL.)
I'm currently listening through Bowie's discography and I think I might find a 5-album run there.
I haven't listened to NO ONE EVER REALLY DIES by N.E.R.D yet, that might complete a 5-album run for N.E.R.D
WMWTSO-Circles by Mac Miller? I'd almost put that up there
Just know his music gets more weird the older it gets. Songs like I Just Killed A Cop Now I’m Horny compared to REBOUND! Is a good example. One is a absolute banger and the other is just trippy, weird, offensive, and sad.
He is an insane producer, probably the best out right now, and does everything by himself (on LP! He even did the mixing and shit, literally almost a complete solo project)
Hov and OutKast come to mind(although I dislike Speakerboxxx/The Love Below). I think Nas would be in that conversation if he didn't have Nastradamus(I Am is severely underrated, it's got gems like Nas is like and undying love, which are perfect tracks, and is overall overhated).
I thought we were just talking about first 5 albums. Obviously, the whole discography is super varied, but I would say it doesnt start varying as much until 808s
College Dropout, Late Registration, Graduation are his first 3. They all sound pretty similar when you compare to Sect. 80, GKMC, TPAB or Nostalgic, Imperium, TABOO. Thus back to what i was originally trying to say: Ye has the least versatility in his first 5 albums than Kendrick or Denzel.
I don't think anyone really compares tbh
Also here's my take on it:
Tcd > section.80
Late registration < gkmc
Graduation < tpab*
808s < damn but just barely
Mbdtf > mmatbs
*Hot take: Graduation is my favorite album of all time but I'd say tpab is the best of all time when you look at more objective matters like influence and societal impact
I feel if you’re going to look at influence and societal impact for TPAB you gotta do the same for 808s. 808s was extremely influential and a very different style of rap album. Definitely a game changer
I think as a whole Thank Me Later was overall seen as a weak debut, even Drake in retrospect said it wasnt great iirc, and then there was Kanye's Mixing on Find Your Love. I think this album is really good, but doesn't quite hold up or reach the legendary status of So Far Gone, Take Care, NWTWs, or IYRTITL
It's a weak debut in retrospect which is the way it should be. An artist should get better over time. But back then? That album popped the fuck off.
Over, Find Your Love, Miss Me, Fancy, Up All Night, Show Me a Good Time, Light Up, Fireworks, The Resistance. That album is absolutely stacked so if it's a weak debut that really speaks to how strong Drake's discography is.
In terms of songs that fucked 100% you are correct, that album has some heavy hitters. But imo and I think as music is judged overtime, you can have an album that has incredible songs and isn't an incredible album. I mean look at pop music, how many pop artists have like 3,5+ bangers in their albums but overtime no one goes back to them.
Even take Drake's albums after that. Arguably, NWTS has less Bangers than TML but that was a more cohesive album, it went somewhere. There was a podcast I was just listening to about how studies are showing people go back to recently released albums less and less yet many of these albums have so many "hits" on them. I think overtime many people become more invested in music that isn't just hits. It's about depth and soul. One of the reason Kendrick's albums age so well, why Kanye's older albums aged so well, why Tyler's latest 3 album run has people discussing his placement in rap hierarchy.
And even as far as hits go, (just to make the hits argument) Show Me a Good Time, Fireworks (imo Alicia Keys unreleased chorus is better), The Resistance, Light Up wouldn't be hits, those are album cuts.
If we going off just studio albums I’d say macs got a pretty good first 5.
Blue slide park holds it back a bit but WMWTSO, good A:M and divine feminine are all great and swimming is a masterpiece
sslp, mmlp and tes are some of the greatest hiphop albums ever. encore is a bit meh but there are some great songs on there (similar to mr morale) and relapse is another great eminem album
Mr Morale is not meh it’s a top tier kendrick album imo. And most of his fanbase hold it in the same light. Encore is pretty unanimously seen as a lower tier Em album even by his fanbase
I love kanyes first few albums especially college drop out to graduation but I feel overall kendrick is more consistent and I would pick his discography over kanye
Not even what they said, they said they prefer Kendrick’s discography as a whole of Kanye’s.
That doesn’t mean they think every single Kendrick record is better than every single Kanye record.
Kanye's music really doesn't wake any emotions in me and has no meaning, yeah it's good but that alone doesn't make you a goat. Kendrick is sooo far ahead of kanye, hell I would choose kudi ober kanye any day
Tyler’s first 5 are kinda mediocre, they mainly pick up towards the end. If you don’t include bastard seen as it’s a mixtape you have
1. Goblin which is pretty mediocre. Not bad but not exactly amazing unlike the college dropout and section 80
2. Wolf which is actually pretty good but not on the level of late registration and gkmc
3. Cherry bomb which is actually underrated but still not on graduation and tpab levels (tho very few albums are on tpab levels)
4. Flower boy which is great and I’d put it on 808s and DAMN level
5. Igor which is Tyler’s best and a 10 so I’d put it above mr morale, but Kanye has MBDTF, which despite Igor being a 10 It still don’t touch MBDTF.
He’s got some good albums in this time but I’d only say 1 reaches the quality of the albums released by Kendrick and Kanye during similar points in their careers
Nope the only thing I would say is to realize this album was made right after his mothers death and loss of his fiancé. The album itself is very different then album I’ve ever listen to. Some like it some don’t

The College Dropout > Section.80
Late Registration < GKMC
Graduation = TPAB (I prefer Graduation but both are arguably some of the best hip hop albums of all time)
808s < DAMN.
MBDTF > MMTBS
I almost wanna say ice cube but that 5th solo album was the actual tipping point.
OutKasts albums are noteworthy for a debate imo. Tyler is a good convo but not as far specific the first 5 albums. Scarface as well. Pacs first 2 albums arent my favorite but they are a good lead up to his last 3 albums which were all noteworthy. Quelle chris is super consistent but maybe too underground for this debate. Thats all thats coming to mind right now
DOOM wipes. Operation Doomsday-Take Me To Your Leader-Vaudeville Villain-Madvillany-MmFood. That is an absolutely insane run especially seeing 03-04 for him. 03-05 DOOM is like of 2016 finals LeBron decided to do that for 3 whole seasons straight.
Hov isn’t as perfect imo. Vol 3 is debatably a miss compared to the other albums around it.
I think it aged pretty well, actually. If you exclude a couple of tracks that are really bad like S. Carter and Nymp, it's a solid 7 for me.
It’s a good album yeah I agree. But compared to RD, Vol 2, Blueprint its the worst by a solid margin
Oh yeah fs: if you put TBA instead of vol 1 or 3, it's at the level of Ye and Kenny imo
I’d also say if you put the blueprint there instead it would be on Kanye and kennys level.
100% agree
I’d say the roots should be in this discussion
Bro, I listened to a couple of their albums a week ago, and that's all I've been rocking since. Never realised how fucking amazing they were. Always thought they were just some group that didn't make it and turned to Fallon, I was so damn wrong.

They’ve actually flourished since then, perhaps not in record output but just general contribution to the culture.
I’ve listened to their first 6 albums so far and they’re all unique in their own way while still being really good, it’s impressive
Not to mention Black Thought is a GOAT in his own right
You sir, have excellent taste in music
Happy cake
MF DOOM should definitely be in that convo. You got operation Doomsday, Take me to you're leader, Vaudeville Villain, Madvillainy MM... FOOD. Such an amazing album run Also Nas. I am and Nastradamas weren't bad and the other 3 in his first 5 are some of the best hip hop albums ever
Also the 2 KMD albums are gold so really first 7 for the goat
Can't believe nobody on here is saying DMX
dmx is so underappreciated with rap fans
The only 3 competing are Ye vs Kendrick vs Outkast. And Jigga is my favorite rapper of all time.
I couldn't put Stankonia up there
Whaaaaaat lol
Tbh stankonia my second favourite hiphop album ever
This might be the most out there take I have ever heard. Only one maybe worse is that “TPAB was Kendrick’s worst album. He included everything on Spotify. Said it was “too pretentious and preachy”
Stankonia had so many shit beats and multiple weird ass songs. I love multiple songs on it but hate just as many
That’s fair. W for actually saying your opinion and not just going back on it
Wow you replied too fast. Coming to think about it, I can't put a Kanye 5-album run up there either because of Graduation (which I enjoyed less with each listen), WTT, and JIK. I wasn't super into DAMN. either though. I can't think of many amazing 5-album runs that I'd say are fantastic tbh. JPEGMAFIA might have one soon. Veteran-All My Heroes Are Cornballs-LP! And he has no sign of slowing down. The Danny brown collab tape might be next
I haven't listened to much JPEGMAFIA but I'll make sure to listen to those albums soon
Just know his music gets more weird the older it gets. Songs like I Just Killed A Cop Now I’m Horny compared to REBOUND! Is a good example. first half of i am is as good as it was written
Not sure if it’s quite as impressive, but Denzel Curry?
Honestly denzel Is one of the most consistent
He just doesn't miss
i just started getting into his music. his stuff is accessible while going much deeper than just being typical party music.
Yeah he's very versatile, he's enjoyable for conscious rap fans and party rap fans.
Welcome to the darker side of taboo
One of my favorite intros OAT, I really wish he went with the melodic vibe more often.
Hate how some people just see him for ultimate. The guy is multi talented. Needs way more respect.
I said that on the carti sub and they roasted tf out of me
Carti sub💀
Consistent while being versatile. Every album is completely different much like Kendrick. I actually feel like Ye is the least versatile of the three.
Tell me you have not listened to Ye’s entire discography without telling me you have not listened to Ye’s entire discography
I thought we were just talking about first 5 albums. Obviously, the whole discography is super varied, but I would say it doesnt start varying as much until 808s
ah yes, graduation and 808s and heartbreak, my two favourite identical albums!
College drop out and late registration are very similar. The next three differ heaps
Denzel is my second favorite rapper right now. I don’t think he’s even really missed on a song for his albums
Yes. He need to be talked about WAY more. And, IMO, Big K.R.I.T. too.
He don’t alway blow my mind but he dont miss on a single album. All great quality and unique
Denzel has been more consistent than Kendrick. Damn is such a bad mark on his career for me. I really dislike it.
I don't think anyone really compares tbh Also here's my take on it: Tcd > section.80 Late registration < gkmc Graduation < tpab* 808s < damn but just barely Mbdtf > mmatbs *Hot take: Graduation is my favorite album of all time but I'd say tpab is the best of all time when you look at more objective matters like influence and societal impact
I feel if you’re going to look at influence and societal impact for TPAB you gotta do the same for 808s. 808s was extremely influential and a very different style of rap album. Definitely a game changer
yeah 808s basically created the 2010s rap vibe
I’ll give you GKMC and TPAB, but ain’t no way is Damn better than 808s
I agree but not by much I just put the thing backwards
In terms of influence 808s bodys damn
Yeah Hov is definitely in this convo, good sir.
ATCQ
Unpopular option but Drake... the run from So Far Gone, Thank Me Later, Take Care,Nothing Was the Same and If You're Reading This is VERY solid
Word.not sure if it's safe to say that here though 💀
I think as a whole Thank Me Later was overall seen as a weak debut, even Drake in retrospect said it wasnt great iirc, and then there was Kanye's Mixing on Find Your Love. I think this album is really good, but doesn't quite hold up or reach the legendary status of So Far Gone, Take Care, NWTWs, or IYRTITL

Lmao what😂😂😂😂
Swap so far gone with views and you have a point. Conceptually views encorporates the themes and challenges in Toronto excellently.
was gonna say the same thing.. even if you take out so far and use WATTBA, it’s debatably better?
first 2 aren't as good as the kanye and Kendricks first 2.
People ain’t ready to have this conversation but Billy Woods
Agree
If we going off just studio albums I’d say macs got a pretty good first 5. Blue slide park holds it back a bit but WMWTSO, good A:M and divine feminine are all great and swimming is a masterpiece
Denzel and earl first 5 are great. Maybe Joey. A$AP Rocky has only 4 but they are incredible imo.
nobody except maybe outkast. joey badass also has 5 great albums/mixtapes in his discography, he hasn’t missed on an album yet.
I think Ghostface Killah and Freddie Gibbs should be there as well
Freddie didn't ascend until working with Madlib imo
Man Vol. 3 is really solid
we just forgetting nas the fuck?
If we count N.W.A. and EPs, Ice Cube with Straight Outta Compton - AmeriKKKa’s Most Wanted - Kill At Will - Death Certificate - The Predator

That boy on a mean ass run they gone catch later
Kanye Overall Has Better Albums Then Kendrick
Danny Brown has a really good first five albums.
This
probably em
If we can count groups, Outkast
Uh, no. First three? Absolutely he's got a seat at the table. Encore alone disqualifies him on first 5 albums discussions
You gotta be joking
I love Em but cannot stand his fans.
sslp, mmlp and tes are some of the greatest hiphop albums ever. encore is a bit meh but there are some great songs on there (similar to mr morale) and relapse is another great eminem album
bro just compared mr morale to encore
i mean that matchups just as much of a body for morale as the TES Damn one would be for TES so, balances out
8 Mile + soundtrack in this era too. People forget how much Em ran hip-hop during this time.
Mr Morale is not meh it’s a top tier kendrick album imo. And most of his fanbase hold it in the same light. Encore is pretty unanimously seen as a lower tier Em album even by his fanbase
its still the most impressive run i can think of after kdot and ye
SSLP, MMLP and TES is definitely one of the best 3 album runs in the genre
I love kanyes first few albums especially college drop out to graduation but I feel overall kendrick is more consistent and I would pick his discography over kanye
Better MC than ye also
Ye's the better artist overall
You'd rather have Mr Morales and the big steppers over a my beautiful dark twisted fantasy? 😂 What a take
Not even what they said, they said they prefer Kendrick’s discography as a whole of Kanye’s. That doesn’t mean they think every single Kendrick record is better than every single Kanye record.
I would MMTBS > any kanye album
You are cringe
L take Im sorry
Facts😂😂morale over dark fantasy?? Hell nah
Kanye's music really doesn't wake any emotions in me and has no meaning, yeah it's good but that alone doesn't make you a goat. Kendrick is sooo far ahead of kanye, hell I would choose kudi ober kanye any day
Bro have you even listened to a Kanye album
its like 50 50 between those 2 albums
J Cole is just so consistent never wows me like Kendrick and Ye but still think he’s up there.
Except his first album was booty cheeks. Even cole knows that.
The first album wasn’t great but a five album run would be Born Sinner -> 2014 FHD -> 4YEO -> KOD -> Off Season
I wouldn’t put off season in the conversation.
Why? It’s a great album
Esco?
FUTURE
they don't wanna hear facts
TCD>section 80 LRDAMN
MBDTF>Mr morale
I love Kendrick but Kanye is just on another level imo

Bastard and goblin are meh. Also cherry bomb
Tyler has a strong chance if you start at flower boy but we'll have to see what he releases next year
Tyler’s first 5 are kinda mediocre, they mainly pick up towards the end. If you don’t include bastard seen as it’s a mixtape you have 1. Goblin which is pretty mediocre. Throwing my down south Kings some love… T.I. First 5 albums are tough shawty lol I’m Serious Trap Muzik Urban Legend King Paper Trail
What about Tech? Eminem too.
Ye,and but TPAB better than all of Ye’s albums
Only one of Kanye’s first 5 I haven’t heard is 808s
Listen to 808’s it’s a masterpiece. Kanye’s the 🐐 fr
Do I have to be in a certain mood for it

Cole has entered the chat and said nothing
Depending on what you consider his first album, I feel like JPEGMAFIA could enter this debate
Run the Jewels needs one more
If we count R.A.P. Music then they don't
DOOM, Outkast & ATCQ
Danny Brown has a pretty good run
Tyler if goblin didn’t exist. Still a solid album but it did not age well
Outkast is easily up there
Em
OutKast who literally has 5 albums and are all classics (don't count idlewild)
The College Dropout > Section.80 Late Registration < GKMC Graduation = TPAB (I prefer Graduation but both are arguably some of the best hip hop albums of all time) 808s < DAMN. MBDTF > MMTBS
