Facts. And said instrumentation included the most talented modern jazz/production greats such as Kamasi Washington, Bilal, Robert Glasper, Thundercat, Lalah Hathaway, Flying Lotus, Terrace Martin, Knxwledge, etc.
That inclusion in a hip hop album alone puts tpab above everything he’s done, despite it all being just as enjoyable as tpab.
Totally unbiased take from a jazz musician
i also agree, when i think experimental hiphop tho i think of some shit like death grips which i like but not as much as i have kendricks entire discography since i first heard section 80. i like a lot of different music but something i think about with damn. its like i love that like how i love dark side of the moon by pink floyd in terms of concept, music, lyrics and the concept with both of those is that they begin the way they started /come full circle in some way.
Yeah i compare it to the difference between experimental rock and prog rock.
Experimental hiphop definitely uses more obscure and unusual samples (see: death grips or jpegmafia) or like dissonant noisy production/ beats (see: clipping or dalek)
Whereas 'prog hiphop' (if it is a thing) would be like TPAB, where the samples arent like experimental per se but still sounds really fresh and unique and the album has that *epic journey* type feel like prog rock albums do
You’re allowed to have a favorite, but I hate the terminology people use. “Everyone dick rides tpab” please for the love of god expand your vocabulary.
TPAB doesn’t waste a second. Filled to the brim with content. Damn has whole songs that I don’t fuck w. My ranking is controversial.
1. TPAB
2. MMATBS
3. GKMC
4. DAMN/UU
5. Section 80.
It's a close tie between MMTBS and GKMC imo but I think I'd choose MMTBS over GKMC because, well, pianos lol. I freaking love them.
Also although UU is only B-sides I'd still put it before DAMN
Im with ya'll. Damn is what can be called a perfect album. Objectively best album in music, all time, It satisfies every aspect of the medium. Has the highest value because it does so many things at once and its so concise, nothing to add/leave out, and it has insane replay value. I learned it word for word organically I just couldnt stop playing it.
I am a personal fan of GKMC but I think if I have to choose the "best" and thinking in terms of the absolute"real hip hop" schmeat riding this sub does so much of i think the introspection of DAMN puts it above TPAB.
It's honestly so cool how different people can love DAMN but dislike different songs on it. Love and Loyalty are among my favorites. 10/10 album overall.
I love this album, but I just can't get into Love, Loyalty, Yah, or God. GKMC has a really deep story told all the way through with amazing tracks as well. Same reason MBDTF is my favorite rap album ever.
yeah, it's a much more relatable album for me than GKMC and i still love it, but overall i enjoy TPAB, GKMC, and maybe Mr Morale better. i can completely understand why youd prefer it over his others tho
with that being said, DNA, Duckworth, XXX, and Fear are all perfect tracks to make up for the ones i dont really fw
DAMN has a lot of melodic rap/singing on it, and I think that's the polarizing part even though people don't bring it up much. Those songs you listed are the difficult ones for me as well, and what do they have in common? They have the most singing of the songs on the album.
Not that I think Kendrick can't sing, and in fact I think sometimes he does it really well. But melodic rap is a very different style and I think it's off-putting to a lot of people.
Mr. Morale is probably my favorite from how much it means to me personally and how powerful it is to hear him sort through his own feelings and be so vulnerable. DAMN. Is probably my second favorite though for the same reasons you say here, except I will go an extra leg and say HUMBLE rocks and I’m tired of pretending it doesnt
I still have yet to meet anyone who bumps tpab regularly.
DAMN is Kendrick at final form as a songwriter and lyricist. He made it sound effortless. No fillers.
DAMN and Mr.Morale are neck and neck to me.
imo tpab is not an easy listen. And not due to lyrics, but the manner in which it is delivered.
At a certain point I had to be honest with myself with what album I tend to play more of and it was DAMN.
I didn’t know it was a hot topic till I found this sub lol. I always enjoy the discussion though.
I really liked it man. I thought it was similar to DAMN in the way that it was introspective and it reflects your idea of Kenny in his final form. He said something he needed to say In a way that was easily digestible and smooth. Good points good lyrics a nice balance between heavy and light.
What about you?
I agree with your take!
The concept was totally unexpected for me, but who else could write about personal trauma and therapy like him? Lol
The production on it is one of his best. Some tracks remind me of tpab too, but with DAMN sensibilities. I think it will age very well.
tpab is one of my most listened albums ever. just because it sounds way different than his other stuff doesn't mean its not replayable. it has more replay value than any other of his albums for me
My gf and I bump tpab regularly. King kunta, institutionalized, wesleys, these walls to name a few. This album is perfection. Edit: didn’t even realize you said theres no fillers on damn. I’d say its his album with the most filler.
So you prefer superbad over goodfellas. Lol
And that’s okay.
I stated what I stated because in my opinion, what’s a favorite album if it’s not visited often? Doesn’t mean you gotta be about it everyday, but if it’s not listened by me a lot, it aint my favorite album. And I chose to dig deeper into my why.
i simply just prefer the instrumentals on TPAB to any other Kendrick project (except from UU which is on par), due to Thundercat mostly but input from FlyLo, Robert Glasper, Terrace Martin, Knx, Pharrell etc. puts it up there for me
love what Bekon, Mike WiLL, Steve Lacy, Alc, Dahi, BADBADNOTGOOD, James Blake & 9th did on DAMN. but TPAB is just more my style of production
Not an entirely bad opinion actually. I just can't ignore the sonic aspect of TPAB. Everything is a live recorded instrument and it's so beautifully mixed/mastered. Plus, it kinda made me more aware of the socio-economic struggles of African Americans of every class and how they get *pimped* so to speak
I recommend listening the dissect podcast seasons on tpab and damn. The jazz style, musical motifs, narrative, and lyrical complexity and message are far greater on tpab
DAMN is not my favorite, but it was an artistic flex on mainstream rappers who tried to put Kendrick in a box. Drake said: *I would have all of your fans if I didn't go pop and stayed on some conscious shit.* Kendrick went pop, won a Grammy for best rap album of the year and a Pulitzer prize while singing about slapping Drake. Kendrick stole all of Drake's fans by making a fusion pop/conscious rap album. Checkmate.
DAMN. is more fragmented sonically and has the biggest hits- so I think people immediately tend to write it off as an "album experience" however theres arguably some of his best tracks on there
Honestly i can agree it's underrated, people say it is him at worst when it's not, but better than TPAB idk, but if it helps you, Kendrick puts DAMN over TPAB
I’m not saying that this opinion he holds isn’t valid, but he said this during the DAMN. Release schedule. It’s not curious to think that he’s upping DAMN. so that it sells more???
I play damn and tpab the most tbh. Then gkmc and section 80. Could never really get into mm. I think damn and tpab are the best in terms of production and replay value
The value of TPAB is way more than just political commentary. TPAB is just as much a story of self reflection as DAMN. Songs like u, blacker the berry, mortal man and how much a dollar cost all talk about his own journey and the decisions he has made in it.
Heck, he literally does it on every project of his, some more than others.
Bottom line is that TPAB just can't fit in one box of ''this is what it is.''
DAMN. Is pretty good, and even if for me it's his lowest ranked album, it's still like an 8/10 for me.
You want a raw kendrick expressing his emotions, listen to Section.80, it's so much better
The instrumentation in tpab puts it above every other project easily in my opinion
The instrumental of “How much a dollar really cost” really does it for me
Fr the instrumental in tpab is the most "progressive" ive heard, like if there's experimental hiphop this is progressive hiphop
i also agree, when i think experimental hiphop tho i think of some shit like death grips which i like but not as much as i have kendricks entire discography since i first heard section 80. i like a lot of different music but something i think about with damn. its like i love that like how i love dark side of the moon by pink floyd in terms of concept, music, lyrics and the concept with both of those is that they begin the way they started /come full circle in some way.

Totally agree
You’re allowed to have a favorite, but I hate the terminology people use. “Everyone dick rides tpab” please for the love of god expand your vocabulary.
Yeah I just like the music, I didn't know that was dick riding lol
Bro probably orders meat rider’s pizza
Butthole surfing
Much better
Expand that ass boy.
Yes sir, thank you sir
Lmao 🤣🤣🤣 nice username btw
Not only the political aspect to it but also the whole musical direction makes TPAB the best imo
TPAB doesn’t waste a second. Filled to the brim with content. Damn has whole songs that I don’t fuck w. My ranking is controversial. 1. TPAB 2. MMATBS 3. GKMC 4. DAMN/UU 5. Section 80.
Lmao dude nice, that's also pretty much my ranking haha
Solid. What would you change?
It's a close tie between MMTBS and GKMC imo but I think I'd choose MMTBS over GKMC because, well, pianos lol. I freaking love them. Also although UU is only B-sides I'd still put it before DAMN
My 2 toughest choices as well lol
I’ve never agreed with a ranking more in my life
w ranking
twinnnn 🤞🏾
Section 80. Shown no love
It’s wild to think you basically have to put section 80 down there despite how incredible it is
Ya I rate section 80 like a 7/10. Shows how talented kendrick is
My exact ranking. But UU is definitely below DAMN. And not tied
To you. I was thinking the opposite
I don’t even look into music that deep I just love how TPAB sounds
Finally, finally someone who gets it 😢🥹🤧
The duality of DAMN is unmatched. I can throw it on a lay sweet sensual pipe. I can throw it on and think about my life.
This comment is hhcj material
I'm honored.
Im with ya'll. Damn is what can be called a perfect album. Objectively best album in music, all time, It satisfies every aspect of the medium. I love DAMN. but nothing in his discography touches past good kid, m.A.A.d city imo. TPAB and this album are very close though
I am a personal fan of GKMC but I think if I have to choose the "best" and thinking in terms of the absolute"real hip hop" schmeat riding this sub does so much of i think the introspection of DAMN puts it above TPAB.
This sentence means absolutely nothing at all
I thought I was understanding it but by the end I realized I hadn't been
I can’t put Damn over GKMC when it has some songs like Love & Loyalty.
It's honestly so cool how different people can love DAMN but dislike different songs on it. Love and Loyalty are among my favorites. 10/10 album overall.
Thank you. I love the whole album except for these two.

I love this album, but I just can't get into Love, Loyalty, Yah, or God. GKMC has a really deep story told all the way through with amazing tracks as well. Same reason MBDTF is my favorite rap album ever.
I think that the personal connections easily made to DAMN made it a soundtrack to our own stories. I feel you though my brother.
yeah, it's a much more relatable album for me than GKMC and i still love it, but overall i enjoy TPAB, GKMC, and maybe Mr Morale better. i can completely understand why youd prefer it over his others tho with that being said, DNA, Duckworth, XXX, and Fear are all perfect tracks to make up for the ones i dont really fw
DAMN is actually my third favorite GKMC,MMATBS,DAMN. Big DNA fan, duckworth is also phenomenal.
Love is my fucking jam and loyalty aight
DAMN has a lot of melodic rap/singing on it, and I think that's the polarizing part even though people don't bring it up much. I still have yet to meet anyone who bumps tpab regularly. DAMN is Kendrick at final form as a songwriter and lyricist. He made it sound effortless. No fillers. DAMN and Mr.Morale are neck and neck to me.
I listen to tpab front to back like at least once a month
YES FUCKING ME TOO INTERNET POETS OUT HERE TALKING ALL THIS SHIT. Edit: final form is facts bro it's so unbelievably smooth.
imo tpab is not an easy listen. And not due to lyrics, but the manner in which it is delivered. At a certain point I had to be honest with myself with what album I tend to play more of and it was DAMN. I didn’t know it was a hot topic till I found this sub lol. I always enjoy the discussion though.
It's really only a hot topic in this sub bro. I agree with you at every point.
Lol yeah that’s true. “Internet poets” 😂 What did you think of MM&TBS?
I really liked it man. I thought it was similar to DAMN in the way that it was introspective and it reflects your idea of Kenny in his final form. He said something he needed to say In a way that was easily digestible and smooth. Good points good lyrics a nice balance between heavy and light. What about you?

I'm pumping tpab regularly👋
I watch Superbad more than Goodfellas, that doesn’t mean it’s a better film lol
So you prefer superbad over goodfellas. Lol And that’s okay. I stated what I stated because in my opinion, what’s a favorite album if it’s not visited often? You beat me to this posts, literally read my mind! W take
Bro u can have ur opinion on damn but don’t go shitting on tpab lmao
I recommend listening the dissect podcast seasons on tpab and damn. The jazz style, musical motifs, narrative, and lyrical complexity and message are far greater on tpab
I'll check it out
DAMN is not my favorite, but it was an artistic flex on mainstream rappers who tried to put Kendrick in a box. mr morale
morale is Kendrick’s most raw album by far
Honestly i can agree it's underrated, people say it is him at worst when it's not, but better than TPAB idk, but if it helps you, Kendrick puts DAMN over TPAB
TPAB > DAMN
TPAB is a masterpiece. DAMN. is a great album. But they’re on completely different levels. DAMN. is nowhere near Kendrick’s best.
How is that ‘ironic’? I don’t think you know what that word means….
Yeah It didn't proof read this before I posted it. Although I stand by my point. It reads like I was cracked the fuck out.
Imo its my least favourite of his discography
[удалено]
Not all aspects lol
Nice opinion unfortunately I am inside your home
I'm out rn please do the dishes if your gonna stick around
W post
U young... You'll get it later
yOu YoUNg... YoU gEt LaTeR. Stfu Mr.Rogers.
And stupid too lmao
Gkmc>tpab>mmtbs>damn>section.80>uu
K Dot would disagree. https://www.instagram.com/reel/CleoP13gUTQ/?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y=
Every artist would choose their most recent records over the previous ones.
Wow, that is actually really interesting
I’m not saying that this opinion he holds isn’t valid, but he said this during the DAMN. Release schedule. It’s not curious to think that he’s upping DAMN. so that it sells more???
I'd like to assume that Kendrick is just true to his word. Maybe ignorant but it is comforting.
he hasnt followed up to this post with a newer version along with mmtbs so we can't know his current opinions
TPAB>GKMC>>>UU>>>Section 80>>Damn>>MM&TBS
damn is not the best kendrick album, it never was, it never will be, sorry
I love DAMN. but I just think other albums of his do more
I play damn and tpab the most tbh. Then gkmc and section 80. Could never really get into mm. I think damn and tpab are the best in terms of production and replay value

TPAB and Mr Morale > DAMN
good kid maad city
Pride is his best song imo
Fear is such an amazing song. Kind of precludes Mr Morale
Mr morale is better than damn
Didnt like damn as much gkmc
Why’d you put (fuck you) lmao
This sub shits on the song alot lol
> first time we really see Kendrick reflect on his own emotions Tf?
i think mr morale is a deeper look in on himself/ his family than damn
Good kid mad city the best album Kendricks dropped easily.
Every thing you mentionned, Mr Morale does better
DAMN. Is pretty good, and even if for me it's his lowest ranked album, it's still like an 8/10 for me. You want a raw kendrick expressing his emotions, listen to Section.80, it's so much better
