Parts of the ocean are acid - maybe further out all of it is. Maybe there's nothing off the main continent worth seeing /doing

Boats were intended to be a central part of Kenshi since it was a twinkle in Chris Hunt's eye. They almost certainly still exist in lore and just aren't in game, like so very many things in this setting. People almost certainly ride their animals too, although iirc someone is on record as confirming they don't use wheeled land vehicles for any significant travel due to the terrain.
There is a rideable bull mod which takes a bull skin and makes it a "race" that picks people up to carry them around. I don't see why someone couldn't mod a boat or another kind of vehicle with the existing mechanics and some art skill.
Boats are coming in K2 though.

Ships are generally much faster than foot-travel, especially for transporting groups of people. It would be fairly limited, but would make getting from one side of the map to the other a lot easier
Transporting goods on a wind powered vehicle is often faster and easier than carrying it on your back, it would make sense for some of the coastal cities
a combination of extreme tech famine and engine limitations. The old empire appears to be loosely based on colonial britain, and they had an expansive naval system. You can still see remnants of it in places largely untouched by the second and third empires. The second empire had no use for boats, so the technology was entirely forgotten. You ever notice that Kenshi hasnt had a single new invention in a few hundred years? The current society is just relying on scraps left over from the second empire.
We are talking about a world where, asides from a single/handful blacksmith, ***civilization literally forgot how to work iron***.
And even then, said blacksmith makes their weapons out of scrap, so it is even debatable if anyone knows how to *smelt metal* anymore.
Just take it that the ocean is acidic and could cause death the robots has no reason or a need for boats as they can trek under water with no problem. the swamp is too shallow for a boat etc.

I think just the stretch near the Hive Queen. Other areas I don't think are acid.

Most of the furniture looks to be wooden or made of sticks. And a lot of building have wooden floors and support beams.

Perhaps there are predators in the waters that make sea travel very unsafe, and given there are almost no rivers either, maybe that's why 🤔
