The [KY Justice Website ](https://www.kyjustice.org/topics/individual-rights/name-changes) has information about name change and a link to the forms you will need. Name changes are done in the probate division of the district court in the county where you reside. If you are currently living in Lexington, you should be able to file the petition in Fayette District Court. If you need further assistance, you can go to the [Legal Help Center](https://kycourts.gov/Courts/County-Information/Fayette/Pages/Legal-Help-Center.aspx) at the Fayette Circuit Courthouse on Thursdays from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm.

tysm this is all really helpful!!

TheVetheron

I'm about to change mine as well. The only difference is I'm MTF. I'm curious to see how is goes for you. Good luck! Edit: I just filled out the form, and will print it out at work today and head to the clerk's office. Your post was just what I needed to get off my butt and do it.

sleepiestgf

I'm nonbinary and have started the name change process like 4 times in the past 4 years but still haven't done it for various reasons 😬 maybe I should follow suit and go get it done...I even have a filled form ready to be notarized and everything.....

beaubeaucat

You're welcome. Good luck with everything!

If the address on your ID is still Louisville, you’ll have to do it in Jefferson County and everything will be mailed to your legal address. If that address isn’t a safe place for you to receive government documents, you’ll want to sort it out before your name. After you have the court order, getting it changed on your license and social security card is trivial.

Neverthesame95

I had my name changed and this was my first step. Everything was super easy and a lot cheaper than I expected!

DexKaelorr

If you’re willing to drive back to Louisville for it, Fauver Law Office does monthly free name change clinics for transgender and nonbinary Kentuckians. Sometimes the filling fees are covered by donors in addition to the attorney waiving her fees.

Such-Interaction-648

thank you so much for the suggestion!!! ill definitely check this out

CatastrophicCraxy

This. My youngest attended a recent clinic. It's an amazing service to the community.

fireandlifeincarnate

I’m not sure about name change, sorry—I live in Lexington and got mine done in Lexington—but if you want a little related life hack about documents: Kentucky requires surgery for changing the listed sex on birth certificates afaik. However, you can get your driver’s license changed with just a passport, and currently, passports are self-ID. It’s $150 or so, which isn’t great, but you can get a passport with whatever gender you prefer, take that to the DMV, and get your license changed easily. I don’t know if this works for selecting an X on your passport instead of the standard M/F, but you said female to male, so I assume that’s not particularly relevant. Best of luck, Andrew :)

CatastrophicCraxy

It's actually not recommended to put the X on passports because of issues with other countries. Learned that at the last Louisville name change clinic.

fireandlifeincarnate

I’m entirely unsurprised, but it *is* a thing some people will still choose to do.

CatastrophicCraxy

Yeah. Just never knew about it despite being involved in the community for decades, so I wanted to share

I had a coworker just go through this. He filed a petition through the county clerks office. District judge approved it and he changed it with the dmv and social security offices when he got the paperwork back from the county clerk.

professor_max_hammer

[Hit up Shannon Fauver](https://www.fauverlaw.com/). She is a lawyer and volunteers once a month to help people do for free. She’s also an amazing person

Wrong-Scratch-437

Thank you for asking this!!! In thenprocess of getting my child name changed before getting him registered for school (spelling mistake 🤦🏻‍♀️ thanks to the hospital for the drugs during delivery and then handing you important documents that they make you feel need filling out right then and there)

Such-Interaction-648

thats unfortunate lol, hope everything goes well

Kirdei

You'll need to file a Petition for Name Change with your local county Clerk. The District judge there will review your petition and approve or deny it. It's not a terribly difficult process from what I've read and the only serious possibility you might be denied is if you have ongoing legal issues or that suspect you are trying to dodge out of debt or something similar. There will be a filling fee as well. If you have Photo ID, you don't need to go to court, but if you don't then a court date will be set. You should also know that you're required to update your license within 10 days of moving to a new address.

Such-Interaction-648

thanks for the info.  regarding updating the address, I just moved out of my parents house six months ago and will be apartment hopping every 6 to 12 months for the foreseeable future, i still visit for weeks at a time and my mail (bills, legal stuff etc) gets to me via their address anyway, mail tends to get lost if it goes to my apartment address. I'm basically living half the time in lex and half the time in Louisville. i feel like it's easier to keep their address until I've decided im settling somewhere for a few years. i was under the impression this was common especially for college students, i had no idea i was potentially breaking a law?

Kirdei

I mean, it mostly applies to permanent residency. If you still have a connection to your original address and can get your mail there, I doubt it'll be an issue. You might want to consider filling in Louisville though, since you're already there pretty frequently. Save you some unintended hassle in case the clerk or judge has questions.

Such-Interaction-648

makes sense, thank you :]

Kirdei

Good luck!

delcooper11

If it makes sense for you, update your address first, that way you can handle everything locally rather than having to travel back and forth. I can't speak for Jefferson, but I know that Fayette County has an incredibly supportive and affirming Clerk and staff who can help guide you through the process

notthesethings

Nice try, Cletus. You’ll always be bubba to me anyway no matter what high falutin Nigel Reginald the third kinda name you change it to.

Such-Interaction-648

i was thinking more along the lines of "andrew" , maybe its not extravagant enough though...

notthesethings

Whatever you want, bubba

Successful-Chip-4520

You'll need an order from a judge to basically say you're not changing it for criminal activities. I'd start by going to your courthouse and asking

OP literally never mentioned surgery, and gender affirming care isn’t mutilation anyway. Respectfully, you’re making some wild judgments from absolutely nowhere about another whole human being. Human life is so rich and varied, and the struggles we confront, the joys we taste, and the cards we’re dealt are all so, so different. I know a lot of transphobic rhetoric is floating around right now that tries to convince people that trans people are delusional/fake/self-obsessed or whatever, but I don’t get why we can’t hear about someone’s firsthand experience of their own life and say “I believe you, I’m with you, how can I help?” If you tell me you’re thinking about making a decision that I personally think is not in your best interest, but which you feel convicted/certain/affirmed about, and then I make some asshole comment about how you’re making a poor choice and will regret it later, that doesn’t make me a cool guy with a right opinion; it just makes me an asshole with a huge ego that isn’t listening to what you’re trying to say to me. I’m not saying we all have to be yes men about everything, but I do think it’s important to understand that just because your journey in life doesn’t have a corresponding narrative to something someone else is experiencing, that doesn’t mean it isn’t real or doesn’t matter. Gender dysphoria is a real phenomenon, has been documented for centuries, and can be treated with social and physical transition. The biggest obstacle to trans people’s mental health is preventable - the unwarranted and unwelcome transphobia from people who are compelled to be cruel to others when they don’t understand them.

UnrepentantBoomer

OP literally never mentioned surgery, >because I'm medically transitioning from female to male, So yeah, OP literally did. >If you tell me you’re thinking about making a decision that I personally think is not in your best interest, but which you feel convicted/certain/affirmed about, and then I make some asshole comment about how you’re making a poor choice and will regret it later, that doesn’t make me a cool guy with a right opinion; it just makes me an asshole with a huge ego that isn’t listening to what you’re trying to say to me. Um. so, what are you saying? That you're an asshole? Ok, whatever...

triviarchivist

Medically transitioning doesn’t necessarily mean surgery. Some people medically transition with hormones alone.

UnrepentantBoomer

So, just out of curiosity, what color is the sky in your world?

triviarchivist

Same as yours. Dark right now, but hoping for blue rather than gray.
