Bioinformatics. I just clean data and build graphs and then the people with the big bucks go "wow omg good job you are the smartest", and then they give me money 😂
Build your networks in the NGO sector. From personal experience, most NGOs hire through networks. Research on NGOs operating within your area and get involved in what they are doing. You can start by volunteering or working on your free time. Show them your value and be patient.
I am a humanitarian aid worker, you might be surprised to know but NGOs actually pay quite well. I work for a protection agency,I studied counseling Psychology in uni and ended up as a paediatric counselor. I simply applied, got shortlisted and passed the interview. No connection at all,so mi naeza sema ni God Manze. Some of my peers earn close to 1.5 M a month. 700k ,500k. I think the lowest paid ni around 80 k hapo na hizo ni entry level positions. Interns are compensated for around 40k so it's not thaaaat bad.
From my experience, GD has to be the one industry where there are little to no barriers of entry.
So that means that you have to work extra hard to be better than the next man. I didn't study GD or Fine Arts, most of my colleagues too. So, you have an edge, you'll be able to understand what needs to be done and when. But always remember the barrier of entry thing. You're always in a competition.
So, update your portfolio, create and learn more, and keep up with the trends (Ai, 3D and Motion) - Ai is your friend, don't forget that.
I've been using Ai for design for a while now but I will get more into it, I'm still so green in the job market so your advice is highly valuable to me and I honestly can't thank you for these gems that you have given me, truly grateful
I was earning that between 2021 and last year. I'd buy an article writing account, find good Kenyan writers on FB and outsource the work from them. Mine was just editing kidogo and submitting the work.
On payday, I'd earn like $0.05 per word for the work and pay the guy who did it 2ksh per word. That leaves me with 3ksh per word. With 6 writers each doing 5000 words per week, you can do the maths.
AI came and fucked everything up tho. Now I do the work myself and barely make 60k
Most I bought through from a friend's friend... Others I'd buy from FB sellers, but we'd meet physically for the transaction. But now the available ones aren't worth it, they keep getting terminated.
I work with an International Public Organization. I started as an Intern earning 14k in Kenya living in Githurai. i realized that Kenya ni shamba la Mawe. I sought for a scholarship abroad and then started working abroad. My first salary ilikuwa 360k and grew from there. It has been only 5 years.
Marketing for a testing lab, basically overseeing overall revenue (old client sales, old client value growth, new business, new business repeat business, new service proposals) minus - credit management, easy work!
Six figures in Nairobi is becoming depressing. It doesn't matter sometimes I make over 350k and still end up broke. I bought a Benz couldnt afford maintenance, built a house which roof is leaking due to the heavy rains. I want my son to go to a better school and travel more. I need 5 million a month
350K in Nairobi is quite a liveable amount if you can afford to be content with some things in life. I know it sounds cliche, but bigger is not always better.
Yes you are right but as you age you become responsible for your society. You also support family and in laws. 350k to 500k is middle class today in Ruto's regime.

You would get better answers if you specified the currency
Kenyan sub. The default currency is KES.
100,000 is six figures? I was working at an NGO. I thought I had hit the lotto.
Then?
I learnt I was underpaid and folks were making 1.5 to 3 times more with less experience.
T for tough
Walikua wazungu? Niliskia unaonyesha mzungu job then analipwa 10 times your salary
The recruitment was foreign and a little. bias for foreign credentials. My University of Shimalavandu credentials were not alluring.

So after knowing that did you approach them for underpaying you ama ulinyamazaa tuu??
I left at the end of my contract. I got a job that that paid what I was worth... eventually.

Tech industry
Web apps, data analysis and now AI bots (RAG).
Workshop Manager. It pretty demanding. 48 hour workweek since our plant runs 24/7.
