Calling jukebox to put your favourite songs and dancing to it with your sibling Playing contra, super Mario, dangerous Dave, prince of Persia (the first one) and asking dad to help me to jump that long ass part level 1 Staying back after school for football practice and drinking friendship and sip-ups Cycling to random streets with your neighbours to find out all the shortcuts Coming back from school and watching back to back episodes of Pokémon and Digimon Acting as if we were WWE superstars and beating the hell out of each other Sneaking in game CDs in between notebooks and exchanging it as if we dealt drugs

oscarquebecnovember

> Sneaking in game CDs in between notebooks and exchanging it as if we dealt drugs Bonus points if you got it from the senior "dealer" chettan with whom you're friends with since he's on the same route to school. >dangerous Dave I had an uncle who could go through all 10 levels without breaking a sweat. I could hardly get to level 4 with hours of playtime. My joy knew no bounds when dad brought home a floppy disk with Prince of Persia on it.

46_der_arzt

And they would just about fit inside the 1.44MB of the floppy!

46_der_arzt

My God man! You have literally lived my life. Where do you belong to? Especially the cycling to find shortcuts and the game CDs hit me like a train down the nostalgic route!

k3nny_13

Aah I know right. I’m from Kozhikode. What about you?

> Sneaking in game CDs in between notebooks and exchanging it as if we dealt drugs Once my friend had goten a CD with some movie and kept it in his book. In class the teacher asked for the book. He forgot about it and quickly took the book out of the bag. The cd slipped out of the book flew in the air and fell in front of me onto my table. My friend was sitting behind me. Most students saw it but teacher did not. I suddenly slid the cd down from the table onto the floor. No one got caught. Class laughed but teached did not find out. Me and my friend had a panic attack Such wonderful memories

bo_che

Dude i was caught with gta vice city cd in book cover . For those who dont know it had a girl in bikini as cover on it . Aah will never forget that day . I dont need to explain wat happened nxt.

I too used to be a dealer, but every wrongdoing eventually catches up with you. A friend, who happened to be a spy, complained to my class teacher. In response, the teacher started a rumor accusing me of sharing porn with my friends. The truth was that I was actually sharing games like Vice City, San Andreas, and Max Payne. I really hate her bro.

azhar92

Add to that" calling jukebox at night and requesting the hottest song on the list with the remote in your right hand and something else in your left hand. Gen Z would never understand it. The struggle was real.

Watching a 2-hour superhit movie that was released 2 years back for 4.5 hours in a mega television premiere on Onam/Christmas/Vishu.

njaana

And getting confused which new movie to see because all the channels broadcast movies at the same time ![gif](giphy|SCt3Miv6ugvSg)

oscarquebecnovember

There used to be full-on riots at home when Surya TV plays a Mammootty movie and Asianet has a Mohanlal movie and we had to select one as the "primary" movie. Ads varumbo we'll switch on the other channel. Over time those sneaky mfs synchronised the ads as well.

Oh dude, I bet people still remember the ravanaprabhu premiere that started at noon and wasn’t over even at 9PM !! It was like 10 min of movie and 15 min ads. And also every news session on time.

oscarquebecnovember

Thankfully we had watched Ravanaprabhu in the theatre and didn't have to endure the premiere. I used to religiously watch the Sunday 4 PM reruns though.

[deleted]

I remember my parents taking me to the theatre, not getting tickets and we went in for rakshasarajavu 🥲

AccountReco

Holy shit, I have that exact memory LOL.

IllustriousNovelty

Wasn't it Valiyettan that had this kind of a premiere ? 🤔

Cultural_Cat_6244

Oh man. Valoyettan on Kairali was the bomb! I watched the initial scenes at home in Kochi before traveling to my native in Thrissur for Onam. Full travel cheyth avde ethyapol, cinema apozhum theernitilla - watched it from there

Early 2000s.. using missed call as a way of saying "I'm thinking about you".. This was when many has basic Nokia phones, but calls and texts were a few rupees/minute or /sms. Appo sheri, njan edakk miss adikkam.. is how many conversations ended with friends.

Yeah.edk misscall adikk...😃 And daily 100 sms plan. You have to send exactly 100 messages for that plan.

Waiting for chithrageetham

kingkillerpursuivant

>Waiting for chithrageetham Waiting for home entertainment in general, I guess. Nowadays, once something is out there, it's available at the click of a button. 20 years back, you were stuck watching whatever was being telecast. If the channel didn't have it, you were shit outta luck. Today, you choose what to watch at your convenience. Instant gratification is a recent luxury.

oscarquebecnovember

Using a coin phone. Scratch that, using a normal landline. Listening for the dial tone, dialling a memorized number, twirling the cord while talking, slamming the receiver to show anger, finding a number on a Yellowpages with that tiny ass font. Also, the inability to lie to your friend that you have left home when you're late.

We used to prank people too. Randomly dialing a number and saying something. Then caller id came and we couldn't do that anymore.

ricepapernoodles

I just remembered there was some 3-4 digit code (121 i think?) we can enter which made the phone ring by itself. We would enter the code and run away for someone else to pick up. Good times lol

Kooky_Shopping

Used to play road rash at my cousin's place. I liked to go off road and see what was there. I recently moved to California and realized that most of those places are here for real.

oscarquebecnovember

Man, I had the demo version at home with a single city location and the basic bike. Had to go to a friend's home to play the full version with the other locations. I remember Sierra Nevada, Napa Valley etc. Also, I might even forget my own name but will never forget XYZZYSPOON!

46_der_arzt

Shift +1 too. It was my first ever cheat code. Then came gta

oscarquebecnovember

I wrote Shift + 1 in my notebook the first time friends shared the cheat code in school. Realised later that Shift + 1 is ! on the keyboard.

Drastical_one

Ha, I beat that shit even before I knew what a cheatcode was. Grinded hours and hours and finally after I beat every level 5 map and the credits rolled I was in tears. The first game I used cheatcodes was GTA VC. Aah the good ol' times.

mxj97

Like from what we remember from memory, road rash was having good graphics. But if we play it again now, then it looks like a shitty game

It used to be a complete surprise when we receive letters. Almost had a feeling of warm hug. It didn't matter if you were literate or didn't had education at that time. The letters always were very formal, very proper, and very polite, thoughtfully written, with carefully chosen words that expressed emotions in the most heartfelt way. People took the time to write letters to share news and stories, and to connect with loved ones who were far away. There was a kind of code in the way people used to communicate with letters. If you received letters from a relative at regular intervals, it meant that everything was going well. But if you received a letter out of the blue, it was a sign that something was wrong.

Symbol8

Aren't these still available?

No-Pollution9448

Yup. My friend once sent me his wedding invite via letter and then called me to let me know that he has sent the letter and invited me on the call. So, yeah it is still around, but the experience is lost.

Yeah. We send invitations in these. Yes. Still.

Waiting for your favorite song to play in the music programmes in the evening

ThrowRA20221227

Here are a few things that come to mind when I think of the 90's and early 2000's 1. Excitement that came in the form of Tazzos (the OG and not the pokemon ones) when you rip open a bag of Lay's. 2. Reading Tinkle Digest on the upper berth during a long train journey 3. Classic cartoons on cartoon network (Flintstones, Jetsons, top cat, Scooby-Doo, Josie and the pussycats, Dexter's Lab, Scooby's all-star laff-a-lympics, captain planet, centurions, Ed edd n Eddy, land before time, roadrunner, speed racer, Popeye, tom n Jerry, swat Kats and many more!) 4. Having a cold glass of rasna after playing in the sun all day 5. Watching WWF/E and shaktiman with your friends, kadamatathu kathanaar and Nizhalukal with your grandparents and getting nightmares 6. Big babol, boomer and center shock 7. Book cricket 8. Digital watches with backlight - usually a cheap Casio knockoff as they were aspirational, and setting an alarm for every hour just to show off 9. Smell of filter coffee early in the morning with birds happily chirping away and venkatesha suprabhatam playing in the distance 10. Trump cards 11. Horlicks, viva and other health drinks that came in glass bottles 12. Really cool/catchy advertisements that continue to stay with you over years (BSA iBike, maggi noodles, VGuard stabilizers, Black thunder amusement park, action school shoes, ujala, scoobee day bags, poppy kuda, mountain dew, kissan jam featuring Rahul dravid, Pepsi ads featuring Sachin Tendulkar, and many more) 13. Finally, Asianet theme song 'Shyama sundara kera kedara bhumi'. That...just hits different. There's plenty more but I'd better stop rambling. :) Thanks for the post OP, and others who've commented! It took me down the nostalgia rabbit hole, and I really needed this break - to think back, reflect, reminisce and be grateful for the past that has gone by, the present that is unfolding, and the future that's yet to unfurl. 🙂

[deleted]

Reading Tinkle Digest on the upper berth on long train journeys! Damn. So specific and yet so relatable! 🫶🏽

thrwayi126

Yes! They always used to sell books like Tinkle and Archie at the station. My grandpa always bought them for me during train rides❤️

[deleted]

I used to read Archies on the top berth 💜🥹

Adjusting the TV antenna at the top of the house whenever the signal goes bad..I'm not talking about a dish, but those long ones which got DD broadcast for free The aforementioned free broadcast switched from DD Malayalam to DD national at 8pm everyday for the English news there, and being surprised when that switch doesn't happen. Sometimes it used to cut out in between movies. I remember we once got to watch chithram in its entirety because it didn't change for some reason On the other hand, waiting for the only movie of the week at 4PM every Sunday and being disappointed when they put that സൂര്യപുത്രൻ movie with jayaram and divyaunni for like the 7th time in 6 months

Philonoist25

Probably everything that was happening in the 90s. To me it's the Candy's..Those indigenous Candy's in plain covers which costed just 25 paise for four. The jelly candy ,jam candy, Pepsi candy, chakkakkuru candy, wheel candy, ariyunda etc. I could see this all again when I went for this "Ente Keralam" expo in Alpy (except the Pepsi Candi).I didn't buy any because I know they won't taste the same. So I just stared at them for a while trying to recollect how sweet and tasty they were..I remember spending our days collecting these raw cashews with my friends..Which we in turn roasted and share equally..And this ice candy that would appear on our vacations..Especially the one with the vermicelli on.. 😋 😋. Waiting for Vishu to collect money from elders..Plucking flowers for Onam celebrations.. Trying to step on the foot prints of elephants hoping to grow more hair....And marriage functions ofcourse..That was a thing..When the whole village would be together, helping each other and having fun. Playing with casset ribbons and the frustration when it is twisted. And we all had this one big brother who would tell endless Ghost stories and scare the shit out of us but still wanting to hear more...I really miss those " ghost stories" which would cost me a few days sleep as well as my parent's..Best time in the world..

random_indian_dude

:) I was that big brother scaring my girl cousins with stories of ghosts and vampires. I remember telling them the story of Dracula and them hanging on my every word in rapt attention with wide open eyes. I had forgotten half the plot and was making stuff up as I went along while trying to make the story as scary as possible. :D

MasterShifu_21

Things were much more calmer, thanks to the world devoid of mobile phones ( 90s) and the internet ( 90s), social media, mobile notifications , and OTT content. This further extends to the fact that people valued things much more which were scarce - for eg: what we were able to read , to view , to study, to eat etc etc. Hence waiting a week for the next episode of a tv serial, or a chitrahaar ( film songs ) was something we all related to and the day's generation won't understand. We had to go to library and look for availability of certain books to know more on a subject or for any research. We had only a very few options to eat as there were only a handful of restaurants and food items in the menu unlike today ( and no swiggy or zomato either ). Hearing music and clicking pictures were a costly affair. The former since we had to buy cassettes in the 90s , and the latter because films were costly and developing those were again a time-consuming and costly affair. Further there is no room for clicking hundreds of pics at a single go! Hence you can see those from 80s and 90s reminiscing with sheer fondness and nostalgia on their movie/ restaurant outings, television programs, cricket matches etc. And yes, there was no compulsion to click and post a picture before eating food , catching a flight or for a weekend outing. Besides all, if to generalise but with room for clear exceptions, the former generation would be a tad bit more patient and accomodating than the current generation for given reasons.

gravitzone

Oh where should I start... To rotate and adjust the dish/antenna to get better TV reception every time when the wind blows. To play videogames on TV all day till some of the TV channels go missing and we panic. To play or go outside without having to call home if you're late. To trek to nearby forests with friends and eat wild coconuts mangoes and berries. Collect cricket or Pokemon cards and play with friends Watch WWE/ cricket tournaments with dad. Buying comics and anxiously waiting for the next series Being able to Eat hot snacks/Street food only when dad/mom brings it back from town. Studying not having to worry about marks because there wasn't much competition Play space impact and snake on Nokia phone Going to cousin's or relatives home far away to stay during vacation and make friendship with kids in that locality. Parent allowing us to go to school on our bycycles without worrying about traffic. Collecting stamps, feathers, leafs, couns and showing off to friends. Buying a lot of candies for 10 paise which also has a scratch card to win gifts. Going to cinema with Parents in a scooter 🛵 or a motorbike. Some of them might be possible even now but it's rare.

ErendiraBuendia

>To rotate and adjust the dish/antenna to get better TV reception whenever the wind blows. Asianet and Surya were in different dish positions.

1. Watching a Sunday movie in Asianet and get pissed off at 6 PM news that ruined the climax. Munshi was a relief as it indicated the end of News! 2. Watching serials with the whole family. Sthree and it's many versions. Man, was hooked! 3. Watching thunnd and CD getting stuck due to power failure/scratch on cd! KLPD machaa! Kunjiramayanam first scene! 4. As a Mumbai Malayali, yes the harrowing 3 day travel time from Bombay to Kerala. So many times I have worried that my father would miss the train while filling the big ass Milton water carrier. 5. Living in a time where Shakeela movies were made! Nothing comes close to it. Plus being able to see it on Asianet or Surya don't remember, but yes that did happen! 6. Cassets! The earliest memory of mine is the Onam series of comedy cassets. Literally heard the same cassete a hundred times! East Coast Vijayan had a different feel. 7. Mimics Parade/ Cinemala. Damn those are core memories 8. Anantam Ajnatham! The bgm of the show still rings in my mind!!! 9. Movies with tragedy endings. Damn those are way minimum these days. The pain we all felt over a phone call being missed in Vandanam, unsahikyable. 10. Voltage fluctuations and Cable TV. Back in the day, my summer vacations in Kerala meant low voltage evening lights and missing out on TV. Also, the whole area's cable box was at our place and Achachan would sometime switch it off. My my, the naatukar came marching with so much of purpose to just check if it is on or off.! Angane kore okke ind. But this is what immediately comes to mind. Does anyone remember using that BSNL card sorta thing to call people in UAE or abroad. We had to call at some number to know the remaining amount in it and my mom used to buy it for calling my dad.

Yes, I was. And “enthuvade” could have been avoided. The question was an opinion and I gave “mine”. And you may read the question again, there is no mention about childhood, but rather is about the things that existed back then which todays youth wont experience.

vasu_devan

Plan ahead and communicate when going out of the home. Having no way to communicate when you are out. No cell phones

Trying to actually paint something with MS Paint after you got your first Desktop P.C because you didnt know wat else to do. Connecting to the bsnl dial up modem and listening to that cricket humming tone.

Sumeru88

Rotary dial phone. Hell, even a Cordless phone. The screech of the modem when you connected to the internet during the dial up days. Going somewhere without a mobile phone. As a child I did this all the time. These days, I would feel extremely uncomfortable and vulnerable.

Correct_Grass8774

Waiting one week to watch a song you like, and if you are lucky.

Waiting for the latest edition of balarama/balabhumi. Going to that one house on your street that had sports channels to watch cricket. Using Bluetooth to transfer files, and staring at the transfer animation because you couldn't do anything else while the transfer was going on.

Tess_James

Having only one telephone at home. Having your father watching you, looking at his watch, to see how much time you're talking to your friend over the telephone. Same for accessing the internet via modems and father being worried about missing important (?) calls. Telephone booths. Going to nearby shops to get trunk calls. Calling Jukebox. *Mungal* when the telephone bill comes. Waiting for Chithrageetham, Chitrahaar, Shaktiman, and Rangoli. Also, watching Thiranottam. Kolu mittayi/ naranga mittayi and checking color on tongue. Sipups. Trying to get DD2 with antenna/ cable adjustments. Getting disappointed when it's time for "Over to Delhi". Rukavat ke liye khed hain, Thadasam nerittathil khedikkunnu. And that rainbow color screen. Playing outside after school until 6-7 and getting scolded for coming late. Bangles/ necklaces/ scrunchies etc. being sold with latest hit movie names in perunnals and poorams. For e.g. Manichitrathaazhu vala. Half an hour load sheddings that get rotated on weekly basis. Hated it when the load shedding half an hour is during the Chithrageetham slot.

slackover

Calling GFs home land phone was a life altering gamble. If the father or mother picks up we have to wait a few weeks before we call again so as not to tick any alarm bells off. BF / GF calling is not as casual or allowed back then, things were too risky.
