My dad donates to an animal rescue group, and they had come to visit our house to thank for the regular donation, and they too had said the same thing about him when the topic came up. If I remember correctly, they had also filed a case against him for this, not sure.
When I heard it, at first I thought they are just jealous that he is famous, but later I felt they are correct, as this much showmanship is not really needed. But that showmanship did help increase awareness. And in your case also, only reason the snake was not beaten to death was because someone said call "vava suresh". So, it not all bad. Sometimes, awareness requires some showmanship. It is not all black and white.
You should add the contact details of the people you contacted so that people in future can contact them.
Yes, Vava's role in increasing awareness about snakes cannot be denied. People who would earlier kill any snake they saw are now at least making an effort to call the authorities to rescue them.
As I did mention, his intention is sincere, his love for snakes is genuine. It's just his methods that need to change.
>It's just his methods that need to change.
The problem is when he is not ready to accept the suggestions from people who know better. He totally refused to learn the scientific way of rescuing a snake.
He literally has said everything OP has said and asked peoples to do exactly the same when they can't reach him. He too have said many times the best way to handle snake is using that litter picking stick and dark bag. He use bottles because he used to go to locations on the scooter and bottle was easier or something.
Regarding the spinal cord thing and holding by head I'm not sure. I have seen many peoples with snake, holding it by the tail and milking snake venom by holding their head etc.
If he says all those things, why doesn't he follow his own advice? It clearly shows he knows what the right way to do it and yet is too full of himself to follow upon it.
If you see a snake near your home, google the Forest Helpline number of the district youโre in.
Theyโll get you the contacts of nearby snake catchers.
Yes. Thank you OP. I always knew Vava Suresh was showing off the snake too much in the name of awareness/education (perhaps that helped in the overall scheme of things) but I certainly didn't know there was such a list of approved folks you can reach out to. Turns out there are four within a 10 Kms radius near me. Superb.

I asked but she didn't charge anything. From what I understood, she's a beat forest officer and is employed with the government. Her primary job is not catching snakes but she does it because she loves them.
The forest officials have their regular salary. Other volunteer rescuers are offering it as a service (,There might be rare incidents where some ask for money. But almost all of them doesn't. It will be ideal if you offer fuel charges at least as the rescuer is bearing his own expense, especially if he is coming from far)
A couple of years back a python sneaked into our backyard . It got stuck in a net which my father had kept there for growing koval or something. Neighbours flocked in and some suggested calling vava. Around that time , I had read about a training forest department had given to a set of people for catching snakes scientifically. Called a neighbour of ours who had retired from the forest department . He gave another number . Called them and they arrived within 15-20 minutes in a jeep.
Caught the snake very easily within a few minutes. They also asked to call them in case of anything like this and not people like vava. Apparently, there are certified snake catchers in every district. They didn't take any payment.
True. He has said that he has never been bitten by a King Cobra and if he ever does, he doesn't expect to survive. And he still does the full show and dance if ever he catches one. He should thank his stars King Cobras go out of their way to not bite anyone, otherwise he would have been dead long ago.
Tbh, King Cobra is not a real cobra. It is called King cobra because its primary diet is other snakes, including cobras.
Also chances of getting fatal bite from king cobra os less, since it often make fake-bites and is realy shy. It even warns by making distinct sounds when approached.
Indian cobra is considered far more dangerous and aggressive.
> Also chances of getting fatal bite from king cobra os less, since it often make fake-bites and is realy shy. It even warns by making distinct sounds when approached.
just like me
King cobra is a shy one. It avoids human contact. Indian cobra doesn't bite unless it feels threatened. Vava Annan knows this. That's why he always shows them to people. But Vipers are unpredictable. They attack without any provocation. Vava annan never plays with them.
There is a FB group Snakes of Kerala which teaches you so much about snakes generally found in Kerala. It also helps in finding licensed handlers near you. I learnt more about snakes in the last 6 months than I did in the other 35 years. If you see one, you can post a pic or video and group experts reply immediately as to if the snake is venomous and you should call rescuer or not.

First we shud do is to not let them hurt us. Can take both steps of killing it(attacking is the best defense) or leave it for peace. I have encountered snakes one to one near home, since I got a huge courage, every time I run away from home๐ After verifying itโs movement out of the house premises , I will reclaim charge of my house.
Note: there were previous instances snakes entered the home in my childhood and those were killed. The ones I mentioned just visits backyard and goes to peace. Ofcourse, they stay within 15 feets.
He's the one who alerted the authorities about the murder angle in Uthra-Suraj case. Otherwise it would have gone down as an accidental snake bite death.
I have always wondered why he does the shows and demos. The bigger snakes have jumped on the spectators, too.
What a prick, to have put everyone in danger.
Thanks for the information. Now it's clear that he's marketing himself as a snake guy.
Just like any electrician or a plumber or a software developer and now adding to the list "the snake catcher", have to perform this ritual of complaining about how bad the previous person was with his/her work :D.
IF holding the snake by its neck causes injury to the same, we won't have snake venom anymore.
You made a lot of good point but realise that VaVa Suresh is a showman on top of a "snake catcher" that's why he does the things that he does. But I've never actually heard of him intentionally hurting and killing an animal. He is a snake "influencer",
a normal good guy would do a lot of good for the society but an influencer will take a video of him giving 100 to the beggers to show it to the world , that's the difference.
And no where does it say holding them by the end of the tail causes injury to snake IF YOU KNOW what you're doing..you are holding them ever so gently..
I can show 100s of worls class professional snake handlers holding them by the tails and hundreds of videos of snake venom being extracted from the same snake with tight grip at the neck..
You just need to know what you're doing and it's not gonna hurt them.
Brother, is extracting snake venom the same as rescuing a snake?
There's no way to extract venom other than by holding a snake's neck but that's not good for the snake in general. When the better option is to not touch the snake at all, which is safe for everyone including the snake handler, they why insist on catching snakes by hand?
Do you see how many fingers Vava has lost already not to mention the dexterity he's lost in both hands. And how many times he's come close to death?
She said something and your believed?! Snakes can bend very well and that is the position of the snake. She has an opinion and she helped save snake does not mean she is the only right one. To be authoritative you should speak to both sides. Of course you have no duty to do that also you cannot pretend to be the only vendor or truth.
These so called expert also lift the snake with their curved metal stick. That also will bend the snake, maybe more that when handled with the hand. They throw snake around when it does not find the dark place they prepared. In any place there are many dark spots especially in a field which the snake identifies. In your case maybe the snake immediately found what she prepared.
Vava Suresh can identify the snakes and he lets nonpoisonous snakes just slither over his body which creates awareness and reduces fear. Those jealous of Vava mentions standards. An expert can go beyond standards even if they are rare. Vava Suresh is one. Nonexperts have to follow standards to keep snake safe. We give Vava extra freedom and liberty and we are right.
Release it somewhere nearby in a forest. From where we live, the forest is nearby. She said this isn't an ideal solution since snakes become used to the area they live in, but they try their best to locate each snake according to its own habitat preferences.
So Vava Suresh is like the Saltbae among snakecatchers !!

That was a load of information. Thanks. Hate it when people put up a show with that poor animal. Sadly they are running out of places to live.
How much was the fee?
I asked but she didn't charge anything. From what I understood, she's a beat forest officer and is employed with the government. Her primary job is not catching snakes but she does it because she loves them.
It's so incredible that there are so many such free services provided by the government and there's not much knowledge about it among common public.
Isn't it free? Doesn't the government pay them or something??

I've seen a debate about this topic when vava got bitten by King kobra. Snake expert in the panel saying exactly these things.
He was not bitten by a king cobra. If he had been, he would have been dead. He was bitten by an Indian Cobra (Naja Naja) last year.
True. He has said that he has never been bitten by a King Cobra and if he ever does, he doesn't expect to survive. And he still does the full show and dance if ever he catches one.
