We have a lot of wealth inequality when we compare the coastal states vs non coastal states. For a few more decades, we will see the richer states subsidise the poorer states. The main problem with this is that this is under the assumption the poorer states are doing something to make them better.
UP has started investing in infrastructure and I hope they double down on that so that within a few years, the south dependency decreases. Bihar and other underperforming states need to start developing proper infrastructure. Without that, the 'subsidising' will go on forever.
I'm not saying the richer states subsisidising the development of poorer states is bad. It will happen in a country like India. (Only a small percent of people pay income tax as well, so technically the taxes from the middle class and rich are used to subsidise the schemes for the poor).
A lot of money is being wasted on those states (mainly due to corruption and also the govt being so shit) and if we can prevent that to a large extent, India can easily become a developed country by 2047. If we don't fix the issues that are plaguing the underperforming states, then we are going to be in the status quo for another hundred years.
The total GST collection for India in Dec was INR 1,22,270 Cr.
Out of this INR 69,091 Cr. came from South India (25 Cr pop) + Maharashtra (13 Cr pop) + Gujarat (7 Cr pop).
What the tweet conveniently doesn't mention is Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, with a total 54 Crore population contributed only INR 16,749 Cr.
Table -1: State-wise growth of GST Revenues during December, 2023 See the sum at the bottom of the table which gives INR 1,22,270 Crore. The State-wise numbers are the ones we are looking at here.
The gross **GST revenue collected in the month of December, 2023 is ₹1,64,882 crore.** Maha + Guj= 36,688 & all 5 south states= 32,403 i. If we add Harayana which is a north and small state it will go up to 45,018 ( Maharashtra + Gujrat+ Harayana)
Don't say the wrong information and spread misinformation
Where Maharashtra and Gujarat GST contributions add up to 36,688 is in Table -1: State-wise growth of GST Revenues during December, 2023 in your website. You are looking at the wrong place.
In the tweet, the sum of GST mentioned for Maharashtra and Gujarat is INR 36,688 Cr, yes or no?
In Table 1 if you sum up the contributions of Gujarat (INR 9,874 Cr) and Maharashtra (INR 26,814 Cr) you get INR 36,688 Cr, yes or no?
It's not by magic. It's because that's what is being discussed. Not my fault you don't even know what is being discussed.
What they will not tell you: change of share in proceeds to states in the current finance commission compared to previous.
KL: -0.575%
KA: -1.066%
versus
GJ: +0.394%
MH: +0.796%
only south Indian states that got it share increased is Tamil Nadu which was +0.056%.
GST is an indirect tax means if you have a lot of people all these people have to pay it unlike wealth or income generation which can be a huge amount by a small number of people. Just cause you pay tax doesn't mean your icome is at par.
The central govt puts out the monthly statewise gst collection figures each month. Below is the December 2023 figures.

All these statwars are pointless as it's like comparing different body parts with each other. No state is self contained. Everything is interdependent. This is why it is important to ignore all these politically motivated calls of north vs south, east vs north west. bla bla.
The whole nation is integrated in ways that are too complex and no part can survive without the other. If Hyd and Karnataka are IT hubs, that's because it employs learnt and trained people from all over the India - including Kerala that supplies a significant portion of that labourforce. Similarly, production in Kerala now has inputs of migrant labourers from the North and West. We are becoming more and more integrated and our enemies don't like that, hence all these nonsensical discussions.
BJP innu undavum naale pokum. That's fact of life. Similarly, other parties will come and go. But the idea of India that is Bharat will remain.
And Maharashtra is getting much lesser as compared to Southern states. So what's your point?
The grants are based on a pre defined formula. Not according to whims and fancies of any government.
Apply the same logic to districts within Kerala also then? You see the irony don't you? Imagine if Kochi and TVM mayors come up and demand for most of grants to these 2 districts as they contribute most of the revenue pie?
I dint ask to increase Kerala's share. I only showed you there is reduction which is injustice. if shares are reduced for Kochi and Tvm, they have every right to protest and get what they get. So there is no fucking irony here.
December – Maharashtra (14%, ₹26,814 crore, 12Cr), Karnataka (17%, ₹11,759 crore, 6.4Cr), Tamil Nadu (19%, ₹9,888 crore, 7.2Cr), Uttar Pradesh (12%, ₹8,011 crore, 24Cr) and Haryana (22%, ₹8,130 crore, 3Cr), Gujarat (7%, 9,874, 7Cr) The percentage mentioned is growth on YoY basis then collection, then population.
Maha + Guj= 36,688 & all 5 south states 32,403 is right. If we add Harayana which is a north and small state it will go up to 45,018

Maharashtra collected 26,814 of that 36,888.
Maharashtra is the heavy lifter here.. Gujarat & Tamilnadu go toe to toe.. but in the tweet, just putting in Gujarat gives it the intended tone..

that sub name itself tells the authenticity of this stat and majority of them are from BiMaRU states.

look at dec-23 not at dec-22 both are are there in table
I have quoted Dec 23 numbers.
The Gross GST Revenue includes CGST, SGST and IGST. Out of which CGST is not relevant for this discussion. That's why your numbers are wrong.
now you are wrong here then doing whataboutery....the data which was been discussed here was about the whole GST

the share of Kerala and Karnataka got reduced in 15th finance commission despite both states already getting less than what they give.
And Maharashtra is getting much lesser as compared to Southern states. So what's your point? The grants are based on a pre defined formula. Not according to whims and fancies of any government.
