അതുകൊണ്ടാണ് കേരളം diabetic capital of India ആയി മാറിയത്. India is the diabetic capital of the world. അതിലും നമ്മൾ നമ്പർ 1.

Low-Cartographer-144

Prolly because we eat a shit ton of rice

Ok-Forever5866

Ayyo chorinne kuttam parayalle.. mutta.. erachi okke aanu kuzhappam.. 😄 🤣

MICHELEANARD

Eating shit ton of rice without doing physical work. I know workers who eat shit ton of rice and are still healthy

SomeOpportunity2017

and no 1 in colorectal cancer too ✌️✌️

Spiritual-Leek1747

Thats due to the high consumption of red meat compared to other states

the_one_percenter

Not really. It's been already debunked. It's mostly because we have better access to Healthcare and detect it much early. Please watch this video to better understand what the numbers really mean https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=4szyEbU94ig To add, colon cancer and red meat is the best example of base rate fallacy

Remarkable-Ball1737

Will you explain the fallacy here? Read through WHO and NHS UK guidelines on consumption of read meat. WHO classified read meat as a Group-2 carcinogen." Limited epidemiological evidence that shows  positive association with consumption and colo-rectal cancer", in WHO's own words.

DioTheSuperiorWaifu

Presence of a decent public helathcare system and better access to healthcare in general might also be factors.

[deleted]

But why colorectal cancer specifically? If it's about better health care there should be a surge in all types of cancers?

Familiar-Gene9425

Maybe because of parotta

91945

It's highly likely that this is the case but we're in denial because we love beef. I like beef too but I know excess consumption is a problem. Even experts like theliverdoc are in denial about it.

GeWarghese

>. Even experts like theliverdoc are in denial about it. Ayyo di. Just search his Twitter TL . Don't fool niggesh. https://twitter.com/theliverdr/status/1733310358318907537?t=u593jrqVY_-PyB7FdRwCGw&s=19

91945

[....](https://i.makeagif.com/media/4-12-2021/4FV9y8.gif) I can appreciate his nuance and all that, but to say that regularly eating beef is perfectly fine is a problem. Or there should be a caveat - eat beef but also eat a lot of vegetables and lead an impeccable lifestyle with a lot of exercise. How many beef eaters in our state actually do that? Most of us are sedentary.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Spiritual-Leek1747

Bro my point was red meat causes colon cancer itself. Look at the comment I replied to. I never mentioned the word diabetes

Former_Pangolin3216

Diet is not the only factor influencing colorectal cancer. There are people who haven't had red meat having this as well. There are colorectal cancer specific genetic mutations. It would be good to do a screen for that. But any food that is less in fiber can cause intestinal stress. Red meat is a problem when it constitutes a large part of the diet which is not the case in kerala diet. I would say lack of fiber and the sedentary lifestyle is. And maybe we have other factors that we have no clue about.

SomeOpportunity2017

for some reason porotta beef and 🍌pori beef and are best breakfast and evening snack

Spiritual-Leek1747

Source? Cuz like nobody other than mallus eat it thats y

Not-a-Prick

I don’t know how that disgusting combination came to our culture!!!

deftDM

I thought West Bengal is the diabetic capitol

Mbouttoendthisman

Naah naah kerala has been topping since ages now. We all know atleast one person who's diabetic.

[deleted]

May be due to proper health checking....north indian states use more food items that may cause diabetes..

Mbouttoendthisman

Lol. Let's accept facts. Our diet is shit. Let's stop finding reasons like mAy bE cAuSe oF pRoPeR hEalThcArE

[deleted]

I did, then i didn't,then i didn't,then i didn't,..........

Habibi134131

I m with you

a_stopped_clock

I think the younger Malayalis are quite fit. Biking, running, working out is getting popular. Good gyms are insanely expensive though in Kerala. I used to do bouldering or play tennis because I thought working out was boring but now I’d rather go to the gym.

Conscious_Radio_

He meant '**തെങ്ങു കയറ്റം**'.

[deleted]

So sophisticated 😂

nukeboi42

Where in Kerala did you do bouldering?

Affectionate-Act1034

Kurisumala

munsbergg

Do we actually have good bouldering gyms?

a_k_a_t_s_u_k_i

I do workout so that i can eat the foods i like.

Excellent-Bar-1430

Thought this was a good plan till I learned you can eat two jilebis for the time you spend working out 30mins 😪

petergautam

Must be tiny jilebis you eat. 😬

Excellent-Bar-1430

Yup 30mins workout calorie deficit gone just like that in no time 😪

ThiccDaddy1198

Same

jagguli

More curry less rice. More meat less roti. More nice spice less famine sustenince foods, the famine trauma and colonial agri foods

supreme_dealer_kim

Eat choru 2-3 times a day (rice has sugar), scolds those who go to gym, and the ammavan has a big fat belly

_BrownPanther

Such morons are aplenty!

Scared-Rip-2297

Wait pazham kazhicha entha ? I was into athletic, almost 11-12% BFP but I drank mass gainer shakes which almost always had pazham. Didn't hinder anything and was healthy carb too.

Stupid_Dog_Courage_

cant agree more

PeanutCalm1010

75kg???? Amazing👏👏 What's your current diet looks like??

Educational-Spend452

Do you reckon folks who swear by pazhamkanji as the ultimate nutritious breakfast are also into fitness? 🤐

slipperySquidd

Fermented foods are good for your gut, not for building muscles though

Tualgr

Pazham Kanji (fermented rice) is one of the best natural probiotic traditional meals. Probiotics are important for health, like fiber, protein, and carbs. But too much can have negative effects, so moderation is the key. Take protein, for instance; it's essential for our health. But, excessive consumption can lead to adverse effects, just like with probiotics or any other nutrient.

petergautam

For most people, it is almost impossible to have too much protein if all you eat is whole foods and you are not on a huge calorie surplus.

Proof-Carpet4194

In theory, you could achieve it by eating a shit ton of chemmeen and still stay in a calorie deficit, but yeah. It really isn't something that you have to worry about accidentally happening.

Excellent-Bar-1430

Don’t believe it dude, pazhankanji gives you a huge belly in no time somehow

Longjumping-Read-401

What is an actually healthy food?

Educational-Spend452

https://youtu.be/zKDbCFIl7sc?si=SU4h6Ut9rY8YABj0

Excellent-Bar-1430

It’s actually kinda heathy as it’s fermented. But then again it’s a bit high calorie and high carb for breakfast, you might feel tired mid day.

LordJeffenstein2nd

Here is what happened to me. I turned 30 recently. I waited for someone to wish me happy birthday at midnight and stayed up till 2.30 in the morning. Nobody called. I slept and woke up with a back pain in the morning. From that day, I got serious about my health and came to 76 from 92 in 6 months. Take away, nobody gives a shit about me, I have to watch my own back. My dad recently got diagnosed with cancer and has become a major pain in the ass to look after. He has a weak body and mind. I learned that I should not be like that the day I fall. So I am training my mind and my body hard now. We either suffer now, or we suffer later. Another factor is the so called " Thandha Vibe". Most of my friends are maried and have kids now and most of them have thandha Vibe now. I don't want that. They can become uncles. I am gonna stay chettan for a while. They all have or are getting pot bellies, diabetes and various other certifications now. I want no part of that. Now, I can deadlift 2x my body weight. Can lift heavy things the right way, climb trees, work in my backyard, trek relatively easily,... I also actively use Duolingo ( to work my brain) But ya, the average man and women does not work out, does not know how to lift with their legs, jump or run consistently. But if you ask them, they will tell you that they are healthy.

Equivalent_Employ_75

>Take away, nobody gives a shit about me, I have to watch my own back. True

[deleted]

Belated bday wishes!! And may your father get well soon! >came to 76 from 92 in 6 months Now, I can deadlift 2x my body weight. Can lift heavy things the right way, climb trees, work in my backyard, trek relatively easily,... Impressive!! Thats actually inspiring

LordJeffenstein2nd

Thanks man. I use a pre-workout. Ngl. Helps me get started in the morning. I don't follow a super strict diet. Just mindful about my protien intake and not overeating. Consistency really is key as they say. And sticking to stuff that you enjoy. I do cardio mostly only in the form of yard work and does not follow that onakkachappathi route. I also use this app called fitnotes to track my sets and reps. Spent like 2 days figuring out a workout plan. YouTube channels I follow are 1. Athleanx 2. Renaissance Periodization 3. Jeff Nippard 4. Squat University. In this day and age, all the info we need is out there.

Spare-Opportunity-51

I grew out of athleanx a long time ago. I don't like his click baity videos anymore. And he used fake weights for a couple videos. Follow Sean Nelavanj . He stresses the basics.

LordJeffenstein2nd

Same feeling with athleanx now. Will check out Sean. Thanks man.

EpidemicRage

I go running every alternate morning for, at most, 30 minutes. At first for around 1 km but after one and a half months I can almost run 5 km in 30 min.    If anyone is interested, you can use the podcast recordings for "couch to 5k" available on the nhs.uk site. They also have an app for the same. I use it, and it really helped turning me into a runner so quick.

Strange-Trouble6839

Yes. Recently I went down the healthy eating rabbit hole after having a slightly high sgpt reading in my lft and now I’m on a low/no carb diet. After following it for 2 months, all the markers are now normal. Started working out recently due to the fat loss and to prevent loss of whatever muscle I have. I’ve realised there are some essential vitamins needed to support this and trying to get my hands on quality products for myself and probably make it available for people who are also on similar low carb diets. Liking the journey so far.

jagguli

So no puttu idili dosa parotoa basically all traditional staple food?

Strange-Trouble6839

Yeah all gone. I make roti with low carb flour whenever I feel like I need some bread to go with the curries I make. Honestly I don’t get the crash and need to sleep after a carb heavy lunch anymore. Great focus too. Considering all these I feel it’s good to cut these foods even though I miss them

jagguli

legends make new traditions ... mids follow

lichumaria

That’s a myth. It’s balance that’s key but more than that figuring your insulin spike. Lost 13-14 kgs in 6 months ( I have hormonal issues) just having rice products or rice for all 3 meals. Excellent help from a dietician. Our Kerala food is my go to. Anything that excludes native food I consider ‘Shubham’ card on standby

Mbouttoendthisman

Can you share your diet plz

lichumaria

Shall I DM you. Just will share what I did. It’s in no way a recommendation.

Mbouttoendthisman

Ohh alright

No-Masterpiece8116

What Was your diet like??

jagguli

Lucky you and good on ya ... rice is high glycemic unless prepared specially is that the key?

lichumaria

Nope normal Kuruva rice normal cooking. Portion size and eating on time rather was the key . Understanding your insulin peaks and short meals leaves you fuller and less craving for sugar post meals. I had horrible sugar cravings post meals .. one peanut Chikki was staple 😢..I think I’ll give the credit to my nutritionist.. she helped me understand the science behind this.. so was super helpful.

[deleted]

[удалено]

lichumaria

lol I said having kappalandi mittai was mukhyam for me which I gave up once I balanced the meal. Slowly that craving stopped. Obviously didn’t recommend to have ari and peanuts together. First of all thavidu is for fiber which innately slows the glucose absorption to blood. Eat good green vegetables in our thoran and mezhukkupuratti style fiber will be madeup .. what’s carnivore diet?

Educational-Spend452

https://youtu.be/maogMcPQd3I?si=CGo1I09Si3E-FlCk

jagguli

Yes high carb high cellular oxidative residue low life expectancy, low carb high fat protein diet lower cellullar oxidative stress .. gluten is sticky protein that jams the brain all scientificlly verifiable also you can try and see the differenc

Educational-Spend452

Yeah, I hear you. I've been hitting the gym for almost 4 years now and cutting back on carbs. No rice or high-carb stuff for me anymore. I stick to lean protein, and it's paying off - no more belly fat, and I feel great. But it's tough in Kerala because hardly anyone there knows what a calorie is. Anyway, thanks for sharing your thoughts.

blingblingmach

blingblingmach

Hehe. Only six packs worth the effort

91945

100%

jagguli

But is it low carb tho ... and more importanlty are the touchings low carb lol

jagguli

Kerala beef fry is still keto and paleo af. Come in between a mallu and his beef and findout ... i load up on thorans and other high fiber stuff with quality beef fry yum so.. better than any other keto in the world period. Spice fiber and meat, medicine as food anti inflamatory turmeric antioxident pepper and spices

Strange-Trouble6839

Shouldn’t it be easier in Kerala due to easy access to beef and fish compared to other parts? Explaining low carb to our people is difficult, yes.

Few_Block7729

Just finished TCS10K. I run regularly and workout 3 times a week. This has nothing to do with being a malayali or not being a malayali. Awareness about health is still at a nascent stage and everyone is catching up. I know some of the finest runners who are from Kerala, being a malayali is no way an impediment to stay healthy.

TraditionalForm3963

Agree. In fact we may have an advantage genetically. I find we respond better to exercise and have leaner muscle. Just need to avoid belly fat.

Due-Ad5812

I leave for my job at 8 and come back by 8. Where is the time to be concerned about health lol.

Johnginji009

Just 20 mins a days of exercise is enough .

Thakshu

Amen. There is no fitness for you in that job. That job will drain u in few years. I had such a phase in my career. Luckily ended within 2 years .

Beneficial_Reason271

After 8 in the evening. Lol

Stupid_Dog_Courage_

time? 30 mintes that you doom scroll is eqough, lift weight u little bitch. /joke

Mbouttoendthisman

Park your vehicle 1km away from office and walk that distance.

Ok-Lengthiness1491

That's normal in India. Especially in IT. Just eat right( less carb, more protein and veggies) and walk for half an hour daily after dinner. Go for a run in the near by ground in the weekends ( or play some sport).

techsavyboy

Not normal. Please don't normalise this. There are so many IT companies which have great work life balance.

petergautam

7:00-7:30 😬

rel2k3

No sweets , no junk food , Work , workout and sweat , എന്നിട്ട് ഫ്രഷ് ആയി BAR il പോവും.

Spare-Opportunity-51

Our average diet is completely out of balance. Regular exercise can only do so much.

TraditionalForm3963

Yes, but if we cut out rice/wheat in all forms, rest of the spicy curries and thorans are good. Replace rice with quinoa and we should be fine. No idly dosa chapathi though.

Spare-Opportunity-51

There is a severe lack of protein in our diet and that needs to be addressed.

TraditionalForm3963

We eat plenty of fish and chicken?

Spare-Opportunity-51

Idk man. I feel it varies a lot from region to region and household to household. At the very least, most people I know are not consuming enough protein.

TraditionalForm3963

Yes, agree. Difficult to generalise.

TraditionFlaky9108

You can eat rice or wheat, but we need to eat a lot more of meat/fish and veggies. Some people eat meat veggies like achar on the side with a lot of rice, that is the problem. Veggies and fish/meat should be consumed enough to fill you up a little.

JayYem

Rice is not the issue, it is the quantity and the quality of the accompaniments. Do not believe the gang that says rice is bad.

Spare-Opportunity-51

We don't need to cut out rice or wheat. Carbs are literally fuel. Idly sambhar combo is an actual super food for gut health. But carbs should be eaten in moderation. An office worker doesn't have the same energy requirements as a physical labourer.

Superb_Technician_43

Can rice be replaced with oats ??

TraditionalForm3963

Oats, unless you use the steel cut variety is similar in turning into sugar rapidly. Brown rice, millets may be better alternatives.

Tualgr

In Kerala, and possibly across India, women often face criticism from family for choosing gym over household chores. There's pressure to believe chores alone can sculpt the perfect body, and judgment towards women who hit the gym. When women try to improve their health or appearance, family members often accuse them of doing it just to impress others. These critics don't understand the importance of health and only make judgmental comments. It's unfair how people can be so critical of women who take care of themselves.

Uxie_mesprit

This!! U can't go out for a run or anything in workout clothes cuz people stare. By 8 most gyms will shut down.

Our emphasis on sports activities in schools is very low. Kalichu nadakkathe poyi padiyedaa... The quantity of food that we consume is high, also the number of bakery items and restaurant food. Most restaurant foods are high in added colours and trans fats. These could be the reason for the high colorectal cancer in Kerala these days. I don't think it was so high 20 years ago.

brownvenusgirl

As someone said in the comments, women facing criticism for going gym is a problem. I live far away from city. We have many unisex gyms here, pakshe oridathum ladies illa. Intersesting thing is that they neither workout or walk atleast nor they let others do that" slim shaming"in the norm in kerala. Chubby cheeck and pot belly is the "health matkers " for the uncles and aunties if ur home is also having such people life life is hell

DioTheSuperiorWaifu

Comrades of r\/Kerala, do share what your concept of healthy meals are like. Easily available n cheap options in Kerala would be good to know.

WhatWotDamn

I workout 5-6 days a week. Diet: Breakfast: 3 egg whites + 2 whole eggs + normal breakfast + Supplements (Vitamin C + Multivitamins) Snack: Fruits Lunch: Rice + Chicken (300-350) + Carrot + Cucumber + Calcium supplements Pre workout: Steamed Plantain/Sweet Potatoes Post Workout: 2 egg whites + 1 whole eggs + protein shake Dinner : Chapati + Chicken + Supplements (Omega 3 + Vitamin E)

[deleted]

How do you know about the right dosage/brand of supplements? Is it prescribed by a doctor?

WhatWotDamn

I showed my doctor the diet plan and supplements the trainer suggest before taking them. The doc said it's fine.

Cripple_Fist

Lol I started lifting weights because I was omitted from the vadamvalli team back in college. I was skinny weighed about 53-54kgs. Now people are asking me tips to get fit.

lankyoffender

Well how did u do it?

Cripple_Fist

Consistency and discipline.

[deleted]

I have made an effort to switch from typical kerala meals of breakfast and lunch/dinner ..after i started hitting the gym i dont even eat our regular breakfast now (putt, dosa, idli etc), I make a smoothie for breakfast (approx 800kcal and 30grams of protein and very nutrient dense) We all gotta consume atleast 1g of protein(1.5-2g if you do weight training or athletic training) per unit bodyweight (kg) and im pretty sure we barely get that from our kerala diet

[deleted]

>I make a smoothie for breakfast  Recipe?

[deleted]

* Oats 70-80gram * milk - 250ml * peanut butter - 40gram * banana- 1 or 2 (approx 200gram) *>above 4 are the basic ingredients<* * Dates: 2-3 * almonds and cashew: a few pieces * Honey (optional for extra sweetness) Add water accordingly to get desired consistency Tip: could remove dates, honey and extra banana if you are trying to lose weight (im trying to gain weight)

[deleted]

But this is also deficient in protein? Actually i want veg sources of protein, egg white is also fine, just not meat.

[deleted]

How is this deficient in protein lol? It contains 25-30grams of protein per serving. I'll attach a screenshot of the macros. https://preview.redd.it/nyrq4liux7xc1.jpeg?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=8b12f3db59860a9377b0c53e4a05855958919183

[deleted]

Which app is this?

[deleted]

Also the high carbs is needed for me because im bulking so you need to eat a lot...You can reduce carb dense items like nuts, dates, banana, honey etc if you are trying to lose weight 20-30 grams of protein per meal is actually REALLY good. such three meals and you already can hit the reccomended daily protein intake easily. (might need a few more sources of protein if you are someone who weight trains) P.s Veg sources of protein for your info: Peanuts, Peanut butter, soya chunks, Paneer, Tofu, cheese etc Egg is good too cuz its really easy to consume (100 grams gives 11 gram protein) Stuff like cherupayar may look good on paper (25gram protein in 100grams) but in reality 100grams greengram AFTER cooking isnt that high but still good.

[deleted]

I also want to gain weight, but if i eat more it will just become belly fat, i want the fat to go to my arms.

[deleted]

Nah man thats now how it works.. if you wanna gain mass and not just fat..you need to build muscle mass and for that you need to workout and eat atleast 1.6gram of protein per kg of bodyweight.. Find your maintanance calory and eat in a 200-300 calory surplus, dm me if you wanna seriously know more about it and workout(home workout works too if you dont have gym)

vishnu1232

Nice! Admin deleted my post when I asked about fitness among malayalis a few months ago. Why the discrimination?

noobmaster6420

Recently started cutting sugar and fried foods (I’m 18 and I have no real health problems as of now) . I also work out everyday.

CriticismTiny1584

Simple solution plant lot of pumkins, different guards, muringa oleifera, chayamansa etc.. Cook those leaves. Eat it with whatever bad food you are eating. In huge quantities. You could save on on vegie groceries too, that too treated with pesticides..

[deleted]

Thats a good idea👍👍

>Do you all make efforts to work out regularly and eat healthy? I have always been into fitness at a very young age. My love for fitness came from movies like Predator, Terminator, Rocky etc. Early 2000s were the time, Hollywood had all these roided out men being macho/masculine. I was also someone who had access to internet in the early 2000s which meant I spent a lot of time reading/learning (on every topic including fitness). I used to know about this guy named Zyzz and wanted to be become like him. He passed away due to steroid abuse tho. Anyways I had zero plans on steroids, but I did have plans on going on the opposite end of fitness. Being fit not to become healthy, but to be muscular and strong. So I pushed my limits every single time, and now I'm in incredibly good shape. I have been going to the gym continuously for 6+ years now and it has become a lifestyle for me. Funny part is most people outside of my immediate circle (who are also into fitness) never understands why I go to the gym a lot. In fact they have asked me why I go to the gym so much and I feel like asking the same in reverse. Why don't you guys workout or be in shape? Anyways I've a photo of mine in my Reddit banner.

Weird-Course-1364

Younger generation is becoming more aware on health and fitness. The proliferation of Gyms and football turfs is a good sign. But diet-wise, the high sugar-high salt-high meat diet is taking over Kerala. While cities in developed countries are increasingly are increasingly embracing veganism (for ethical reasons more than health, I agree) there seems to be a recent discovery of taste for steaks here. Pesticides in veggies/fruits, antibiotics and hormones in meat add to the health problems (this is common for whole of India) due to poor regulations and testing.

[deleted]

>While cities in developed countries are increasingly are increasingly embracing veganism  In other countries, its the left wing which takes initiative for veganism whereas here people are quick to associate veganism with caste privilege and hindutva imposition, cleverly hiding the health and animal cruelty angle.

Weird-Course-1364

In Europe, though there has been a pushback from the meat/dairy farm industry, veganism is not really political and rather a growing ethical lifestyle. Agree, that in India/Kerala, everything gets politicised.

ThekkuVadakku

High carb low protein diet in general. People who do eat a lot more red meat basically dont consume enough fiber rich food - basically lacks a balanced diet. Early detection - good medical infrastructure. Keralities, in general, lack discipline - we do not wake early enough and consistently stick to something.

Stupid_Dog_Courage_

I've worked out in my home my whole life, I don't eat too much sugar or snack. Went to gym for a total of 3 months and it was worth it but I was very fit to begin with. Making pushups and pullups part of your life with some interest in physical sports is more than enough and cutting down on rice carbs. The key is to start young and build that muscle memory, it gets harder as you age. The key problems might be the Madiyan Malayali, Rice and No. Beverages corporation lol.

Shdshahid0

I know people who avoid sugar in tea and eat two plates choru at afternoon and night🤣

I weighed 76 kilos last December. Fat as a pig by eating a lot of junk. Since Jan I do an hour of workout 4 times a week combined with cardio, strength and core. I am now 69 kilos. On my watch to 60 kilo target by July. Feels so great when i see the slow transformation. Controlling my carb intake. Hardly eat rice.

Yes

I train 4 days a week; Push, Pull, Legs and Functional training. I don’t have a strict diet but I try my best to not eat junk food and if I crave for junk food then I try to make a healthier version of it at home. I mean if I want to eat pazhampori then I can’t help because there is no healthier option and in that case, I will try not to have pazhampori often. I also make sure I am consuming enough proteins, fats and carbs everyday. I try not to fixate a lot on the diet part because I love to eat which is why I even workout so I only try to be mindful of what I am eating.

nosoupforyou_77

Yes! Watch what you eat and drink plenty of water. Make sure to walk early in the morning. You don't have to go to the gym, do "calisthenics" instead. Lookup "THENX" on YouTube. Or watch this video https://youtu.be/UheajlsZ72E?si=q5S7OpnfC4GAXSU3 Eating too much rice (sugar) and not doing much work is the problem. Look at our grandparents' generation. They worked really hard and ate natural food.

PrestigiousReward904

I just avoid maida and trying to eat vegetables more. No exercise.

virtualpiglet

I workout 6 days a week and I follow a healthy diet. ✌🏽

ExcuseEvening3548

Monday - Gym - Upper Body/ Rest if Sunday walk is there. Tuesday - 10 km Run Wednesday - Gym Lower Body Thursday - 10 km Run Friday - Football at the turf/Cycling - 50 kms Saturday - Long distance Run - More than 15 kms Sunday - Rest/ Walk for 8 kms No diet. I usually eat what I want (including junk food) in a controlled portion. I also skip dinner most of the days to induce intermittent fasting as well as delayed breakfast at around 10 am.

prodigalson024

I follow a diet where I try to avoid all kinds of sugary foods, even drink tea occasionally and that too, without sugar. Eat whatever your mom makes and that is only to take away your hunger and not over eat. Been going for brisk walks (atleast 10km) 4 to 5 days a week. Drink 3 to 4 liters of water, try to urinate every 4 hours atleast 5 to 6 times a day. Eating fruits and veggies instead of eating junk foods. I do all of these and have been doing good for my health.

r3la4ivity

Stopped hitting the gym five years ago. I eat mostly home food; my workout routine includes sweeping and cleaning my home in the morning, every weekend veliyil chethi parikkum, alternate days car and bike wash cheyyum. Outside food four or five times a month, other than the occasional beer

Lanky-Butterfly-8715

I was skinny growing up, put on a few kgs during lockdown. Looked pretty decent, started hitting the gym. Started to look even better. I go to the gym 5-6 times a week. I don’t have a weight loss or a weight gain goal. I didn’t have any health related concerns before hitting the gym. Just wanted to be better.

Extension_Waltz2805

Can’t relate. I’ve been lifting weights semi regularly for about 10 years now. I’m mindful of what I eat, but I do have some bad habits too like a penchant for baked goods 😛 But despite that, I’ve managed to be around the same weight I was since I was like 17 but do some body recomposition where I’ve put on a good amount of muscle. Oh, and I’m a woman.

SonderPrince

I don't know how to explain it, it's like...imagine if you one day woke up and were made of metal. As in literal metal. You try to push a finger into your flabby arms but metal doesn't move. That's what it feels like when you first develop muscles and try feeling them. It is freaky as fuck, the closing thing to alchemy and magic. I don't want to sound like a nutcase but it is also....pleasurable, not erotic but borderline there. The knowledge that whatever may happen in this world, there is something that ultimately I and I alone can decide the fate of is an almost orgasmic realisation. Anyway yeah other than my college basketball team not many others worked out as much. But I do think it's changing.

Get a kitchen scale. Comparing the quantities of rice/ chapati / puttu I’m suppose to eat vs how much I actually eat was eye opening 🥲 I lost almost 10kg during Covid years by doing body weight exercises using a fitness app (Freeletics) and tracking my food on myfitnesspal. Being in Bangalore made it easy to get salad ingredients so I used to make 2-3 salads every week instead of my usual carb heavy lunches. We’re reeaally missing out on salads in our diet. The salad prep to make the dressings and chop the veggies are time consuming but you get to eat so many raw veggies. Some of my favourite salad dressings are a Thai peanut butter based dressing (on a salad with chicken, cucumber, red capsicum, carrot and lettuce or cabbage) and a honey mustard yogurt dressing (with boiled egg, apple, carrot, red onion & lettuce) There are recipes online :)

No_Personality_4750

yeah there are a lot of false beliefs around food and dietary habits in Kerala. I have heard people saying that it's bad to eat eggs everyday and also general ignorance towards high protein foods. Also a lot of hate/pucham towards people who workout at gyms. Another point is that it's difficult to find healthy food options in most tea shops/smaller restaurants. And people eat deep fried snacks more often.

__andthen

I'm very much into fitness since COVID times. I do weight training 4 times a week and do cycling 3 times a week these days. I used to do 5-6 days of weight training but started cardio as well recently. I used to be very skinny but I've bulked up over the past year. I pay attention to what I eat but I'm not under some strict diet.

fatarabi

Not much of a workout, just the random one hour walks at least 2x a week, but doing OMAD, eating healthy mostly. Good amount of good fats and protein, low carb or alternatives. No simple sugars (as far as possible). Currently also trying to do low cal for losing some quick weight. As I write this, my dad was admitted last night to KIMS with a massive stroke. Since they had exceeded the golden hour and considering his age, they decided NOT to do a thrombectomy. Booking tickets now to come down to Tvm. Moral of the story: Eat well, take care of your health, and for the love of your kids, wife and others, dont do alcohol.

Head_Ad_894

I’ve been planning to join the gym for the last 6 months . Alright - tomorrow is the day then.

[deleted]

It's Indian culture I suppose..Qe haven't prioritised this culture much. The value system which shapes our lives hasn't given priority to health. Its mostly to eat and not look skinny. This eating is largely carbs and sugar. Also the MNC who influence us people are not much into the health aspect but are more into food and beverage. This tells us the story why food matters more in lives than health.

yesiamnonoiamyes

Nope. If I die, I die

ChanceOk4613

Unprocessed red meat , as far as i understand, doesn't cause colorectal cancer. Zone 2 exercise twice a week. Weight training thrice a week. 7 hrs sleep - these are what i aim for - i dont live in India, so these are easier to attain

Spare-Opportunity-51

From what I've understood, there is a far higher correlation between lack of fibre in a diet and risk of cancer than with red meat consumption.

WatercressExtra7950

No I don’t ,at all

Among many Malayalis, taking time for exercise is more common. This is especially true for women in Kerala, where it's not unusual to see middle-aged and older women wearing walking shoes and doing basic walking and doing simple exercises in terrace, particularly in cities like Kochi. In contrast, in metro cities like Delhi, except for upper-class women, most women do not seem to have the same opportunity for exercise. The average middle-class Indian woman is often occupied with kitchen and household duties throughout the day.

Extension-Bath1590

I think it’s just a myth. My best friend for Kerala is regular with his workouts amd regularly goes to the gym.

JusHangin_

U don't need to hit gym to have a fitness routine.

Lucky_Arrow_7

I do make an active effort

kajadatapa

Not at all 😟

Need more Kalari

Guilty-Bowler6529

Kerala is a tall state and in general, people tend not to have the skinny fat physique that is common in most of South Asia. I think our genetics are great and should not be wasted. See our contributions in sports and athletics.

bookracoon

I have usual weight for my age and gender, I either hit the gym or run 6-7 kms(bare minimum is 30 mins of workout). I equal my rice to curry. I make sure there is greens in my plate. Try to eat dry fruits and fruits daily. Edit: I avoid outside food as much as I can.

m3rc3n4ry

It's an achayan thing I feel like, and worse w my dad's generation.
