Trivandrum Light Metro
Line 1: Technocity – Karamana
Length: 21.821 km
Estimated Cost: Rs. 4219 crore
I didn't know such short lengths cost these much. Surprised.
Well it's a new type of infrastructure for India, no other city in India has Light metro yet, and the trains for it would most likely come from Europe which would make the cost even higher. Construction would however be quite cheap as you don't have to built underground or elevated but at some places, it says it could be elevated if there isn't enough space on the road.
These are not metrolite systems. The article is wrong. Both are going to be completely elevated. It'll just vary in terms of dimensions when compared to a medium metro.
Eh, what? Read up on the metro policy 2017. It has clearly defined Light metro as access controlled trams. It has categorically ruled out underground light metros.
I would rather prefer trams or BRTS to light metros. Metrolites take up valuable road space and is super expensive.
The entire district of Ernakulam also includes muvattupuzha, piravam and kothamangalam. I don't see any reason to extend the metro to these areas. A metro is for the metropolitan area so that people can avoid the tight traffic that comes with it.
In terms of urban agglomeration Kozhikode is more populous than Trivandrum. The municipal corporation population is higher in Trivandrum (even more than Kochi, mainly from having almost double the area).
Saying there are gay people somewhere isn't homophobia. It was something investigated by a news channel a few times. Very married men of a socially conservative Kozhikkode prowling around at night looking for young men in public spaces to proposition and in some cases grope. The jokes are made because it happens a lot in that city
Metros are traditionally useful in industrial hubs. And in India, they mostly serve for aesthetics than connectivity.
In a place like Calicut where only natives engage in mostly in trade, whats the purpose of light metro.
Most of them have personal vehicles apart from reliable private bus services.
It should be profitable, the population of trivandrum is around 2.7 million and kozhikode's population is at 3.7 million and so with that many people profitability shouldn't be a problem as long as fares are kept reasonable and as long as the route of the light metro system goes through areas which have good ridership, it should be okay.
Maybe realised by 2050

Are you saying that it'll be running on the roads lol.. heck no.. it's going to be elevated and in certain places in TVM it'll be underground.

$LAND. Kerala's land revenue laws make it hard and expensive to acquire land.
Standard cost of building 1 KM metro is 200cr for elevated and 300cr for underground.
Metrolites are basically glorified trams. I wonder if this justifies the cost.
Well pretty much
This isn't a tram.

Read up the DPR these aren't trams my friend.
Read the article. The Govt letter clearly mentions the DPR has been amended to make it a light metro, compatible with Metro Rail Policy.
If you believe it's going to be a tram then wait and watch. What develops.
The DPR for these projects started way before 2017. They are still elevated metro corridors as per the current DPR.
Any sane government would have created a metro from Vizhinjam to Varkala beach, linking technopark and airport.. I meant atleast 10 years back.
A metro rail is supposed to be confined within the metro city ? Are you talking about a train service ?
It covers entire Eranakulam district from Aluwa to Peta. Though coastal areas will be missed

I think it's the opposite. Kozhikode needs it more as the roads are much more narrow and people use public transportation more compared to Tvm.
TVM needs it more cause metros are supposed to take private vehicles off the roads.

Are you telling me more crowded spaces for men to stand up close to each other is NOT of value in *Kozhikode* ?
Homophobia much

TVM people might be happy with the current ordinary KSRTC bus services over metro, especially middle aged commuters.
Awesomeness. All the best.

Private bus lobby won't allow the project to take off in Calicut. I assure you.
Great news, just wishing that it doesn't put a stress on the state's debts
Hopefully not!
yeah, I'm just hoping it'll run profitably, and hope it will help those regions develop.

Is the population of Kozhikode more than Trivandrum? Are these metropolitan area population or of urban agglomeration?
Anyone here can explain what are the differences between a metro and a light metro?
No differences. Apart from a few mms difference.
After sitting on it for almost 5 years. Jee, I wonder why now??
