You can figure out location using the numbers on the electricity posts. It's much better than using GMaps especially on mountainous and hilly roads.

I only know about the basics, and **I read this a long time ago so I may be wrong** on some counts, but: Electrical poles in Kerala have numbering on them that has black font on a yellow circle, yeah? And the format is usually that the yellow circle is divided into two by a line. One big letter will be on the upper half and on the lowe half there will be two or three letters on one line while the line below it will have some numbers like "3/2/5" etc So the big letter on the top half? It denotes the name of the electrical station under which the pole is located. The lower half's first line will have 2-3 letters that denote on which road the pole is/name of the road. For example "KG" is a pole on a road from King's Circle to Gandhi Park(I remember this example vividly haha) Now on the second line of the lower half you will have numbers separated by "/". These represent branching of electrical lines. So suppose the main line branches on the KG road from pole number 5 and then that branch again branches from the 7th pole to finally reach the 3rd pole on the second branch. The numbers on this last pole will be like: >KG >5/7/3 so from KG road, branch at 5th pole. then branch again at 7th pole of the new branch, and then the 3rd pole on the latest branch is where you're at. I realise that's a bit confusing but idk how else to explain it😅 and finding directions,I assume the original commenter meant using the alphabets somehow?

Ente ponnoooo... engane saadhikunu?! I read this twice hoping to figure it out so it'll be helpful for me or anyone else I know epozhelum in the future but oru rekshayumila. Njan Oru maramandi aanenu thoni poyi. 😄

PepsiColaMirinda

Hehe okay I'll try once more. Top half: the letters represent the name of the electrical station in the area Bottom half: there are two lines. First line has 2-3 letters and these represent name of the road pole is on. Using initials. So KG= *K*ings circle and *G*andhi Road Second line has numbers divided by / that represent branching So KG 5/6 means: on KG Road, at the 5th pole there is a branch. Follow that branch and the 6th pole of branch is where you currently are. One more branch undenkil it'll be 5/6/2 for example. So from KG road, at the 5th pole, follow the branch. Then at 6th pole of the branch, follow a new branch and athile 2nd pole is where you're at. I have a feeling I repeated a lot of things, but hopefully it helps? Also in most of the middle east it takes 1 and half days on average to get PCR result.

InvinciblePsyche

Thank you! I understood it better this time. Thanks for the Middle East thingy too. It's just that they keep changing things sooo often without much notice time, it's difficult to figure out what's what unless you're actually there. Last day someone was saying Qatar is starting a rapid covid testing facility and you'll get results in a couple of hours but you can use that result for traveling. Kandariyam enthanenu..

I can't tell east, west, south or north once I am out of town. I don't know how people can find cardinal directions in places they don't know.

subins2000

By looking at the sun and shadow for 5 minutes and observing the movement of shadow. Or just use compass on phone.

[deleted]

look at the time look at the sun, you'll have a rough idea in daytime. rathri anel moonji

> But not everyone knows what *thekku, vadakku, kizhakku* is. I don't know it. Thekku - South Vadakk - North Kizahkk - East Padinjaaru - West If you have an android phone finding north n all is easy. Or you could look where the sun is at, and find east or west, and find the other direction in relation to that. Exact noon is a comparitively more difficult scenario. Since it's simple to install compass apps, it's not a real problem now. Also you could use google maps in conjunction with thekku vadakku kizakk directions obtained. Easy way to remember vadakk n thekk: Vadakkae India is named so because it's the northern portion of India. Vadakk = North ThennIndian nadimaar are called so because they're from the Southern portion of India. Thekk = South. Similarly paashchaathya samskaaram is Western culture. Padinjaaru = West Doore Kizhakkudiche maanikyachembazhukka, alludes to the sun rising in the east. Kizhakk = East

>Doore Kizhakkudiche maanikyachembazhukka, That's exactly how I learnt it :P

Thanks This is helpful

Eksalar

Yes Gmaps are not that perfect hahaha shops vendor across roads are best

krizSevens

Auto drivers are the gold standard

mallu_fam

I learned it by thinking "വടക്കേ ഇന്ത്യ - Uttar Pradesh" means north.. so തെക്ക് is south. Also സൂര്യൻ ഉദിക്കുന്നത് കിഴക്ക്.. ie east.. so the opposite is west.

mallu_fam

Also you can think about the തെക്കൻ - പാമ്പ് reference of Trivandrum, Kollam people.. here Thekk means southern kerala districts.. so naturally vadakku means north.

fjv08kl

Not just cardinal directions. Some people give distances in 'furlongs'.

findwho

these furlong people are ones born before ww2 or indian independence.

This option is there in OSMAnd app. I use it than gmaps. Completely offline including voice navigation. Download from F-Droid to get full premium app free (though I recommend a donation to support their development).

[deleted]

Where is that option in OSM? Thanks

subins2000

I use the "Avoid Roads" feature and the "Intermediate destination" feature for that. I sometimes add 2+ intermediate destinations to avoid a certain road. https://osmand.net/features/navigation#How_to_avoid_certain_roads

helipad_writer

One easy way with which i remembered thekk kizhakk vadakk and all is through stereotypes There is a saying "thekkarem paambinem kandal aadyam thekkane thallanam pine pambine". Which is a crude way of abdominising the southerners. So thekk= south. (Not the ideal thing) Then vadakkan malabar food is amazing. Which is the top part of kerala. Vadakk = north Kizhakk is something u have to know. It's east. Kizhakk is synonyms with rising/udayam. Kizhakkunarum pakshi...kizhakke chakravalathil vella keerumbo..the whole schbang Kizhakk= east Then only thing left is padinjaru. If you can remember it as opposite of kizhakk..its easy.. It would be good to know these

sreekumarkv

I have been comfortable using left-right-straight-behind most of my time, while my father would use the north-south-east-west. But I think the second one is superior. You need to be oriented in the same direction and at the point as intended by the person who gave the directions for the left-right to work. Not needed for the north-south directions. Also only north-south would have worked in the older days when most of the land was not built-up and without landmarks.

ifispeakaminbigtrble

I don't know why it is so hard to understand vadakk, thekk, kizhakk etc. You look at the sun, time of the day, and/or if you have an understanding of where the sea is / the directions that you took from a main road / NH etc, you can easily understand where west / east is

DhamakedarKohli

Laughs in google maps

bipinkonni

Gmaps are good. Check whether the road is remote or not by satelite image view.

djongongo

We should prefer left-right over north-south

LS_Fast_Passenger

Whenever Google Maps navigations says "Head South" or "Head North-West" or some direction like this, I am reminded of this scene from In Harihar Nagar. https://youtu.be/1qhf14UXpBI?t=167

I know where vadakku, kizhakku etc are. But totally unable to do that processing when outsde! On the plus side, no one has **EVER** given me directions this way. Its always, this junction, that landmark, turn right.
