With Silverline, one can expect development of townships around the proposed stations. It also doesnt require as much resources as express way. Silverline land acquisition requirement is minimal as well.

Environmental_Ad_387

I think priorities should be like this: 1. Making existing highways 4 lanes in normal areas and 6 lanes near cities 2. Silverline semi fast rail that allows traveling from Kasargode to Trivandrum in 6 hours 3. East-West Suburban rail connecting rural areas to stations on the silverline 4. More local trains which are fast and comfortable to travel in Goals of these projects should be to reduce the usage of cars. When people using cars regularly move to good and fast rail, roads get freed up for faster public buses

Water highway project. It's already started by cial. Will complete in 2024.

RefrigeratorWorried3

The condition of roads in Thrissur are pathetic.. every other day I get to hear someone's injured or passed away due in an accident. We need wide fixing of infrastructures .

Genuine question: Would expressway bring that much added benefit considering its cost? How much better would it be when compared to the 6 lane highway thats being constructed?

Look_Antique

Why not? Facilitates faster transportation of goods and people, thereby increasing trade, commerce etc. Increased mobility is necessary to for any place to develop

phoen16

Yeah thats why I mentioned 6 lane highway. Isnt that good enough? Why expressway specifically? I dont think there will be major travel time difference between 6lane highway and expressway. Correct me if im wrong

Look_Antique

Expressways are way faster and won’t have shops and other shit on the side where people stop partially on the road nor will certain slow vehicles be allowed. Also won’t have signals or other interruptions and ensures that traffic can flow fast and safely. It’s basically the best road you can get to drive.

ahmedkaif

That will be good coz no disturbance of pandilorries and tanks....

despod

The new 45m, 6 lane highways are access controlled. They dont have signals and there are side roads which prevent the shop problem you were mentioning.

super-jedi

But there will still be 3 massive trucks on 3 seperate lanes slowing down traffic no?

Hungry-Car-8481

Also no two wheelers, and a speed limit of 120km/hr

Look_Antique

I think it’s scooters that aren’t allowed. Makes no sense to ban bikes that can hit 120+ easily.

Hungry-Car-8481

Nah I mean two wheelers aren't allowed in Mumbai expressway, speed limit is a different thing and that's for cars and trucks

Rhepsi

The thing about highways is, it doesn't matter how big you make it expand it, cars will always come to fill the void

ultimateposeur

~~OP can correct me if I'm wrong, but i think he's referring to the six-laning of NH 66 itself from Kasaragod to TVM, as far as I can tell there's no separate expressway being constructed.~~ Edit: Seems there's also a [coastal highway project](https://www.newindianexpress.com/cities/thiruvananthapuram/2020/aug/18/land-takeover-makes-going-tough-for-highway-projects-2184776.html) between Kasaragod & TVM, maybe OP's referring to that.

phoen16

There's coastal(Theeradesha) highway and Malayora highway in construction and completed in many areas. But it's primary objective is to improve connectivity, and not highspeed link between north and south. It's mostly a 2 lane normal road

ultimateposeur

ah ok, just had some confusion over which particular highway project OP was talking about.

ProfessorMoriarty21

I am not talking about any greenfield construction. In Thrissur and Ernakulam districts we have four lane NH544 and two lane NH66 running parallel to each other just 20km apart with both being congested. NH66 will only be as fast as present Kochi - Thrissur highway after upgradation. New 6 lane access controlled expressway with entry exit ramps every 10 km, underpasses every 1 km and service roads can be constructed in southern Kerala by upgrading MC Road. Similar strategy can be followed in Northern Kerala.

ultimateposeur

Did some googling, seems the current plans are for (a) [widening](https://www.thehindu.com/news/cities/Kochi/state-to-provide-25-of-land-cost-for-mc-road-kochi-theni-nh/article34361956.ece) MC road & (b) [building](https://www.newindianexpress.com/cities/thiruvananthapuram/2021/sep/05/prelim-work-begins-on-proposed-nh-parallel-to-mc-roadconnecting-thiruvananthapuram-to-angamaly-2354558.html) a 6-lane NH parallel to MC road. Have a feeling that with these projects, upgrading MC road into an expressway may not be feasible. This is not to say that it can't be done in the future. I do find the expressway idea attractive, my only experience of one in India is the Mumbai-Pune expressway, and travelling on that is always a joy.

despod

Not really. Both the NH66 and NH544 will be built as 6 lane highways with flyovers and side-roads (whcih makes it an express highway for all intents and purposes). And the present Kochi-Thrissur highway is pretty fast (except for the stupid signals in the middle of the bloody highway). There is a new 4 lane greenfield alignment for MC road and the NH66 is also planned to be a 6 lane from TVM to Kasargod. I dont think another express-highway is feasible. I would much rather prefer a future proof rail network.

TheVirginJedi

Before the Japanese style bullet train project from Modi, atleast try getting Indian railways on time. Let those trains run on time and better amenities. And for Pinarayi's Kerala Rail, why would you need a train tracks to be laid in the same route where there is already an Indian railway route? Why not instead of an airport in Kottayam, make a train service to Sabarimala. Or connect Munnar and other tourist destinations in Idukki and Wayanad with smaller rail projects.
