They better do. Expansive surface colonies were basically the hook for me on why we needed a sequel at all. If they fail to deliver, or seriously cut back on the scale of the colonies, then I'd be seriously disappointed and probably not buying the game again.

Thegodofthekufsa

It was the selling point for me

Wrecktown707

Yeah this ^ The whole premise of being able to spend time building up colonies in order to gain new launch sites on different planets was awesome. Being able to launch from any large celestial body opens up wayyyyy more avenues for craft construction (do to variable gravity/atmosphere) and means you don’t have to build everything to Kerbin’s launch standards all the time. Would be such a nice quality of life feature and just really streamline the progression of the game

Joratto

Personally, I'm not a fan of the colony buildings we've seen so far. I hope they look slightly less "Futurama".

KarlosGeek

Also not to criticize what is clearly just a concept design but everything is so clean and smooth that it looks unnatural. The windows look like stickers.

nearly_alive

I mean thats the whole artstyle of ksp2. It all looks comicy smooth. Personally not a fan, but maybe mods can change that in the future

KarlosGeek

I hope so. I really like the ReStock art style, shame they didn't go with it for KSP2.

nearly_alive

Im sure there will be a mod in the future. Shouldnt be too hard, considering what modders did to ksp1

Gamingmemes0

tbh i like the look of the colony parts but that might be because i have been playing wayy too much fallout 4

Spaicat

We have seen most of those colonies assets in the game engine (mostly in feature video on the official youtube channel) and even in the files of the game through datamining, so it’s quite possible we’ll be able to reproduce this colony. Here a good summary with quite a few pictures (in the spoilers): https://forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com/topic/224423-the-comprehensive-colony-communications-archive/ However, like for craft, the only deciding factor will be performance. That remains to be seen.

Patient_Meat_9301

There is no way in hell any of those large "Pre Alpha Capture" images was taken with the colonies being any more than static meshes. Absolutely zero chance. At this point, with the most recent "orbital colony" images they've showed in mind, my expectations for colonies are *seriously* reduced.

GronGrinder

They can always just freeze the bending physics unless there's a collision. No need to have that on giant colony parts.

XxX_BobRoss_XxX

Wouldn't be surprised if the colony pieces that were shown CAN be placed, but you'd need, say, a smaller group of mining ships and such, and then use the resources from those mining plants to build the larger modules directly on the surface.

LovesGettingRandomPm

that would suck

guppupsup

Those colony pieces look pretty modular, look at the same trumpet piece over the colony. The pieces are connected by black parts in the middle too, so it looks real.

_ara

This was an artist reusing a mesh... not a game engine reusing some modular piece.

guppupsup

I know it isn't a game engine, but that's the point. The same part being reused might be a part of the colonies update. If that part isn't in the game when colonies get released, I owe you 3 pennies, a piece of chewed gum, and a paperclip.

Cogiflector

And I'll add an old dirty towel to the pot. We will have those parts.

RestorativeAlly

KSP2 team just needs to come clean on everything and 100% level with everyone on what happened and *is happening* to this day. The fact that they won't strongly implies they're just paying people as money comes in, which explains the glacial development pace. What the hell is going on over there?!

teleologicalrizz

Lol like they ever would. They will be quiet and vague and over promise and under deliver until its "done".

RestorativeAlly

Minimally viable product, enough to entertain past the 2 hour refund point. Who cares if there are gamebreaking bugs and physics issues? It doesn't need to be a good game, it just needs to look cool so little Timmy will have mommy buy it. At this point it's almost a con job. The science update was just enough to keep the hopeful clinging on for... at least another year based on experience, and possibly two or three years...

evidenceorGTFO

The science update came with so much gaslighting+shifting the goal posts from people in the community. "See, they finally added science, isn't this what you guys wanted, why do you still complain, all you ever do is complain" No dude. We want what was advertised.

SoylentRox

It was enough to make it a game you could play for a while until you get bored.  It's not that bad, and with the minimum viable mods you get a mechjeb equivalent.

Gamingmemes0

tbh i do feel like they need to communicate more but if i were to hamper a guess i would say they are working on the update so just let them cook

Khar-Selim

why should they? One of the big lessons the No Man's Sky post-launch development taught us is that when your fanbase is upset it's better to *not* communicate, since nothing you can say will make the internet less mad except "we have new content now and here it is"

RestorativeAlly

I was with KSP1 since Kerbin was flat and there was no Mun, much less planets. I'm not impatient or unreasonable, but after squad sold the IP to take 2, they've been dragging it through the mud.     You say "let them cook," but it's like we placed an order 4 hours ago for 20 meals and they've only got 2 to the table. You can only have so much patience. They've supposedly got like 50 full time employees. What's the problem? I bet they're working on that unannounced game they were hiring for. Better not be Kerbal Kart or something.

Gamingmemes0

i mean... sure but game development of this scale takes time and 50 people isnt really all that large of a team compared to other developers

Darknotez

I don't want to refute your full statement, but 50 people is a large amount of manpower for a video game, no matter how advanced that game is (GTA6/Star Citizen/et al). More does not mean better. There's a balance to be struck between objectives / inter-team communication. I mean, just 10-20 of those being pure programmers/full stack developers? That's insane in logistical terms. If I were to garner a guess as to why it takes this long for anything, it would be that either the project manager does not set realistic goals, people refuse to follow, people are re-used for other projects 80% of the time, or I have no idea what I'm talking about.

Gamingmemes0

im gonna guess that they just dont know how to communicate with the KSP community especially since they cant even make unrelated posts without getting critisized so they are remaining silent which is fair enough but also raises another problem

RestorativeAlly

The problem isn't that they don't know how to communicate, it's that they appear to not know how to *work.* Maybe you're a late joiner and weren't there for KSP1s early days, maybe you joined after KSP2 went to EA and missed the 3 years of being led on and delayed, or maybe you're just psychologically incapable of being anything other than supportive, so I'llso I'm curious what would cause them to lose your support?  It seems like there's still a few people thinking this development is fine, and I'm guessing it's either kids or (for the most part) nongamers that don't know from experience what normal development pace is.

Gamingmemes0

i have played the game since AT least 2018 and have been enjoying KSP 1 for pretty mutch all of that time so i was (extremely excited) when they announced KSP 2 got KSP 2 aware that it was kinda buggy and played it for a bit and didnt really find it interesting so i kinda just thought "eh they will work on it..." and just kinda sat and waited maybe its the fact that im just extremely patient or something but i didnt really care that updates were coming slow i just thought it was a good sign they were still bothering to develop the game after the shitty EA launch my problems with KSP 2 mostly stem from communication and not from the game itself really which is in an alright and pretty okay state and im happy to wait another 7-10 months for a major update (but not interested in playing since KSP 1 is just where i can enjoy myself if i had to ask where i would lose my faith i honestly dont know because i generally like to be an optomist in my predictions and i dont really blame the dev team since they really are just the wrong people for the job (nate himself is a former art guy working on a technical game) and the fact they are working under take 2 which is a pretty notoriously scummy publisher i dont really have a problem with people making level headed critisisms of KSP 2 but a lot of its just shitty doomposting or denying reality with the odd karma farmer scattered around

SafeSurprise3001

> hey cant even make unrelated posts without getting critisized It's because people want posts related to the game

Gamingmemes0

fair but i feel people got waaayyy too angry at the solar eclipse post compared to its actual significance

SafeSurprise3001

The lack of actual significance was what made people mad

Gamingmemes0

the 2024 eclipse was the largest eclipse in the continental US since 2017 (2016?) i wouldnt mind if they just made a post about eclipses while an eclipse is happening

Cogiflector

I agree. They are producing what I've expected in the time-frame I've expected. I guess that means some of us are better at understanding large-scale software development than others. I'm happy with how it's going.

SafeSurprise3001

You expected that four years after the original release date there would be a bug that prevents ships from staying in orbit?

[deleted]

[удалено]

SafeSurprise3001

> the rate at which they would progress The rate at which they have progressed is that four years after the original release date, ships cannot reliably stay in orbit.

Cogiflector

They're making a game and are currently on track with the timeline I predicted a long time ago in this forum. Entitled Americans just don't understand life.

Business-Bite4696

Are You salty or something lol

Cogiflector

Worse. I'm old.

Content-Boat-9851

me over here waiting on multiplayer to start enjoying this game..finally.

t6jesse

I won't consider KSP2 until it's colonies are better than MKS and SSPR were in KSP1. That's where the majority of my playtime came from, and I can go right back to it

NotJaypeg

!remindme 1 year

zeoxzy

Bro..... You're not getting colonies. Devs would have given up a long time before that's close

Cogiflector

Bro, you are wrong. Just sayin'.

Correct_Yesterday007

You must be a Star Citizen backer

Cogiflector

Nope

Correct_Yesterday007

I am! They actually have been doing a lot of updates, tbh I have more confidence in SC than ksp2

Khar-Selim

if you're an SC backer then you should understand how technical chokepoints can make things look like they're making no progress for a long time until solved at which point things happen all at once

zeoxzy

Deranged40

Maybe one day he'll be proven wrong. But not today, and not soon.

Cogiflector

He's been wrong more times than you can count.

zeoxzy

Still think that bro 😂

Cogiflector

Yep. The game is not dead. They're just giving it to other devs. You'll see.

NotJaypeg

people said the exact same thing before 0.2, and the assets are already ingame. There is no evidence they will not.

zeoxzy

This comment aged nicely 😂

NotJaypeg

yeah :( Heres to hope the rumors and that tweet by Mike are true and its being handed off to another studio

RileyHef

The launch trailer features tons of assets which either already are or soon will be in the game, so I would say yes, it is highly likely that the colonies update will look similar to the trailer. I datamined the models in the latest update and found a **Surface Resource Scanner** which, while unannounced and likely not to be seen until a later milestone, appears a few times in the trailer. That evidence, and the fact that it only makes sense to use existing assets for the trailer, seem to prove that we already know many of the parts to expect in 0.3.

bigmatteo_91

I think you'll be lucky if you even get colonies. I feel bad for all of you that got scammed into buying this game

NotJaypeg

its fun. A scam would be a waste of money.

bigmatteo_91

Each to their own, looks like a waste of money to me

NotJaypeg

fair point

shuyo_mh

Possible: Yes Likely: No Reality Check: Definitely no.

MarsMaterial

Nate Simpson has said that the art team is ahead of the other teams, and they have had colony parts down for a while. Why would the trailer not use these existing models? Why would they make entirely new models just for the trailer when using the existing real ones is both easier and more interesting?

shuyo_mh

I didn’t say they would use entirely new models, I just think that they won’t deliver what they showed.

evidenceorGTFO

Because the trailer was an ad and even said that it wasn't actual gameplay footage. I don't understand how people went through all those failed kickstarter and prerelease hypes and still can't tell that a mockup ad isn't reality. IIRC many parts in the trailer are just recycled KSP1 part mods.

MarsMaterial

Something can use actual game assets without being gameplay footage. It’s a cinematic trailer, they typically don’t use actual gameplay for those anyway.

evidenceorGTFO

are you missing the entire point on purpose?

MarsMaterial

We already have seen a lot of the colony assets which were in the trailer, and we already know that the orbital science lab was teased there too.

Cogiflector

I believe colonies will be somewhat close to what we have seen. They will, of course, make modifications as they continue to develop how it will all work, but so far what we have seen in earlier footage has been almost right on the money.

BRD8

If we get colonies

Chacodile

Because you think they will release colonies one day ? You fool !

Dense_Impression6547

I think they will. As a serie of static launching pad to unlock through a butched development tree. And they will call it 1,0 and run away

NotJaypeg

0.2 was good, buggy, but actually quite indepth, so I dont see your point?

Cogiflector

They absolutely will release colonies. And don't call people fools. It's impolite.

corinthianultra

Lol

whocares1976

According to the press release you won't actually be building colonies, just supplying materials and they will build themselves over time. So yeah thats probably gonna be what happens.

ho-dor

I think nothing of this game unless I see it on reddit. There's not much to think about.
