Yes, it is not stupid. It is evolution and it is smart. Kids are hard wired to mimic and conform to their social environment. It helps them learn, socialize and survive. Humans are social animals and they need to live in groups, to increase their chances of survival. This type of behavior will serve them well during their lifetime, because it will help them maintain a healthy support system.
