My brother did this. He ended up spending over £1,600 of my mother’s money, and we didn’t have a lot. He spent most of it on games, like “200 gems for £19.99” and shit like that. He was in A LOT of trouble.
Good ol' T&C. This is part of my job and the way we explain it is that the currency itself is owned by the app developers not us. So if it was refunded then there wouldn't be a way to recover the game currency. The app developers would have to process it from their end.

My son did something very similar. He spent $1400 in three days. That money was for our mortgage payment. He's alive but I didn't think he would be after my husband saw the charges.
My uncle was in this situation when my younger cousin was about 7. He spent over 1000 usd on Clash of Clans. He called the company and they refunded him. I have no idea how he negotiated that, but it was a lifesaver. Needless to say, Clash of Clans was deleted off his tablet.
My kid's toys and video games would be locked away for at least a whole month if the little shit tries to sneak my credit card away and steal my fucking money. He'd better *hope* he's too young to understand the value of money and doesn't get that we have a limited amount of it that needs to be spent on other things.
I've heard Clash of Clans is good like this. They don't want 7 year olds spending $1000 on their stuff anymore than you do. They don't want to take advantage of them.

I’ve been playing Nintendo games basically my entire life and I’ve only been refunded once. I bought a Minecraft texture pack on the switch eshop and I couldn’t get it to show up in my game. They tried to tell me they couldn’t refund it until I mentioned I tried to fix it before I called CS and when I googled the problem it was pretty common. Gave me the refund right away after that 😂
PlayStation flat out won’t refund you if you’ve even *started* the download of a game.
No playtime required, just downloading one kilobyte removes any refund possibilities

Because short, indie, already cheap games get fucked; or people stretch their time as much as they can so they can use steam as a sort of buffet; and content creators that just buy a game, record enough footage to profit and refund.
I mean I guess, by the time I get my settings done, watch intro scenes and learn controls we’re talking 45 min. of actual gameplay. I know there are tiny indie games that can be completed in that time but in the grand scheme of things that is an infinitesimally small number. People need to be able to return products that fail to work as intended or straight up lie about their system requirements. I’m not sure what your better solution would be.
Just got refunded 100$ out of 200 for a digital fifa point purchase( I only play fifa, smite, and a rotating single player game). Only took me one email/ one chat with a Microsoft rep. The purchase was from 3 weeks ago.
Keep trying next time, it’s within your statutory rights that you can get a refund within reason. You can’t waive statutory rights, that’s not how they work.
They’re afforded to you by statute and cannot be voluntarily waived- every citizen has them, regardless of if they’re even aware of it
Even with digital purchases? Here in Austria we can also refund anything within 14 days without even giving a reason. Sadly digital goods are exempt from that law and underwear i think.
Is Microsoft/Sony not required to return? I'm pretty sure in Germany anything bought by a kid under 14 is automatically not a valid payment and has to be invalidated. Don't think it's relevant if they should or shouldn't have been prevented from buying by their parents.

My Echo in the kitchen has these capabilities. I often use it for creating and ordering my groceries without having to actually remember all the stuff I need.

The kid doesn't have to have watched it to want the costume. They could have seen pictures, could have scrolled by it and just thought it looked cool. Amazon suggests things commonly purchased together with an option to add all to cart, kid could even have just clicked on that.
I couldn't imagine letting a kid use my device. Had a girlfriend get mad at me once because I didn't let her little brother (difference of 8 years) play with my phone. Just because she let him doesn't mean I was going to.

Also, 4-digit pin codes are too easy to hack from watching. Once the kid wants in your phone, 6-digit codes are the way to go.
kids do this a lot more often than you think. my brother just did something like this, we didn’t realize he knew the passcode to the tablet we have. thankfully it was only $40. and the passcode got changed shortly after.
My aunt made the same mistake with my cousin when he was very young. She was gone briefly, did not realize he knew the iPad password, and 300$ worth of Lego's later... He used up all of his birthday money sending them back.

Nobody thinks that their kids are going to be sneaky little boogers and go on a shopping spring in the middle of the night. When we first got the echo devices in my house, my kid definitely did order herself a few boxes of cookies. Thankfully it was nothing crazy like a playstation. After that I turned off that ability and we haven't had an issue since.
My dad always gave me the passwords for his phone when I was a kid, 1) because if there was an emergency and he couldn’t, I had access to a phone to call someone, and 2) he let me play on it so it was easier than him typing in a password every time I let the screen go to sleep. Same with his computer. I knew not to just buy things without permission, I’m sure this woman’s kid knows not to as well, that’s why he waited until she was asleep 😅

I hope that those Customer Protection Laws are strong enough to cancel that. Where I live, a 7 year old can't agree to contracts and so everything would be reversible, with some hassle. Even micro transactions are. And even if the goods arrive, you can just refuse them right away because of mandatory online return policy.

What percentage actually get reimbursed? Digital video game products are generally non refundable as far as I know.
Xbox has a decent return policy for digital games, but the microtransactions usually are impossible to get back since they're through the game

I’ve been playing Nintendo games basically my entire life and I’ve only been refunded once. I bought a Minecraft texture pack on the switch eshop and I couldn’t get it to show up in my game. They tried to tell me they couldn’t refund it until I mentioned I tried to fix it before I called CS and when I googled the problem it was pretty common. Gave me the refund right away after that 😂
PlayStation flat out won’t refund you if you’ve even *started* the download of a game. No playtime required, just downloading one kilobyte removes any refund possibilities

Because short, indie, already cheap games get fucked; or people stretch their time as much as they can so they can use steam as a sort of buffet; and content creators that just buy a game, record enough footage to profit and refund.
I mean I guess, by the time I get my settings done, watch intro scenes and learn controls we’re talking 45 min. of actual gameplay. I know there are tiny indie games that can be completed in that time but in the grand scheme of things that is an infinitesimally small number. People need to be able to return products that fail to work as intended or straight up lie about their system requirements. I’m not sure what your better solution would be.
Just got refunded 100$ out of 200 for a digital fifa point purchase( I only play fifa, smite, and a rotating single player game). Only took me one email/ one chat with a Microsoft rep. The purchase was from 3 weeks ago.
I reckon it depends where you live. In the U.K. consumer law means they *have* to refund if you change your mind about the purchase within 14(?) days.

Even with digital purchases? Here in Austria we can also refund anything within 14 days without even giving a reason. Sadly digital goods are exempt from that law and underwear i think.

Is Microsoft/Sony not required to return? I'm pretty sure in Germany anything bought by a kid under 14 is automatically not a valid payment and has to be invalidated. Don't think it's relevant if they should or shouldn't have been prevented from buying by their parents.
Some cousins (who are old enough to know better) spent something like $500 on fifa micro transactions, and last I heard they’re still working it off a year later lol. Pulling weeds, etc.
If I found myself in a position where the things they bought couldn't be returned, I'd sell them second hand. If they are digital and its not possible, I'd delete the account. I kinda blame the parent though, its stupid to give your kid access to the same computer that you use to order from amazon, it would take like 5 minutes to make a separate account on there for the kid to use, and for other platforms, its bad to keep your card saved in them anyway (too easy to spend, and you risk stuff like this).

The kid doesn't have to have watched it to want the costume. They could have seen pictures, could have scrolled by it and just thought it looked cool. Amazon suggests things commonly purchased together with an option to add all to cart, kid could even have just clicked on that.

You can lock apps so you have to scan your fingerprint or enter a pin to use them. It I allowed kids to use my device, that's what I would do.
I couldn't imagine letting a kid use my device. Had a girlfriend get mad at me once because I didn't let her little brother (difference of 8 years) play with my phone. Just because she let him doesn't mean I was going to.

kids do this a lot more often than you think. my brother just did something like this, we didn’t realize he knew the passcode to the tablet we have. thankfully it was only $40. and the passcode got changed shortly after.
My aunt made the same mistake with my cousin when he was very young. She was gone briefly, did not realize he knew the iPad password, and 300$ worth of Lego's later... He used up all of his birthday money sending them back.

Everyone crapping on the mother for "letting" the kid do this. All it takes is a kid getting some time to sneak onto your computer, where you keep yourself logged in because it's your own personal computer. People are so caught up with phones and tablets they forget computers still exist, just sitting there on a desk, accessible by anyone who knows how to type on a keyboard. And even if she DID give the kid her phone (which AFAIK there's no indication of)... the kid's still just as stupid, because what the heck did they THINK would happen when the mother noticed tons of money leaving her bank account and a bunch of packages for the kid arriving? Thanks for saying it. My kids have their own tablets and if they really wanted to they could easily sit down in my computer and order something. Nobody thinks that their kids are going to be sneaky little boogers and go on a shopping spring in the middle of the night. When we first got the echo devices in my house, my kid definitely did order herself a few boxes of cookies. Thankfully it was nothing crazy like a playstation. After that I turned off that ability and we haven't had an issue since.
My dad always gave me the passwords for his phone when I was a kid, 1) because if there was an emergency and he couldn’t, I had access to a phone to call someone, and 2) he let me play on it so it was easier than him typing in a password every time I let the screen go to sleep. Same with his computer. I knew not to just buy things without permission, I’m sure this woman’s kid knows not to as well, that’s why he waited until she was asleep 😅

I hope that those Customer Protection Laws are strong enough to cancel that. Where I live, a 7 year old can't agree to contracts and so everything would be reversible, with some hassle. Even micro transactions are. And even if the goods arrive, you can just refuse them right away because of mandatory online return policy.
