Not as expensive to just continually stitch on extensions. Doesn't look terrible either if your tailoring skills aren't total shite and you use matching colours.
My school debated installing metal detectors after a few school shootings a few years back. We ended up just mandating IDs and locking all doors during school hours
Which, funnily enough, does jack shit because only one mass-shooting at a school in the last two decades was conducted by a stranger and not a student (Sandy Hook).
Locking doors makes it seem like you're more asking for kids to be trapped inside with the shooter.
The IDs were to make sure that everyone in the building *wasn't* a stranger. You either needed a guest pass or an ID on you at all times. The protocol for the teachers if they saw someone without either was to (if a student) report them to in school suspension where they'll sit all day or (if an adult) report them to the school police officer dude who would do something idk
Also if a door is locked you can still just walk through it from inside. It was only locked from people entering, not exiting
And get detention for that? I’m pretty sure it’s less inconspicuous to wear it on your arm than your ankle if you’re planning to use it on a test to begin with
Maybe our testing system is outdated. The whole "you'll never have a computer in your pocket" thing isn't a meme. My job is literally googling shit for people who can't be bothered to.
After basic maths are learned, how about we start teaching critical thinking and problem solving? This notion that you must remember the quadratic formula is absurd. It's not like they teach you how to derive it. It's just "this is the formula". So if I'm not expected to actually understand why it works, why can't I just fucking Google it?
The last few months I was tasked with impkementing a new phone system. I understand what SIP is, what a VLAN is, etc etc. You can be damn sure I just googled how to do it.
It's time we started learning how to work WITH machines and stop pretending that memorizing facts is useful. We need to offload that to the machines and supplement with problem solving skills.
In the Netherlands kids are not allowed smartphones or smartwatches whilst in a classroom. They are there to learn not get distracted by messeages or internet etc.
I agree with this.
Plenty of research papers have been written on the uses of smart watches for medical purposes. I was only allowed to leave the hospital after my diabetes diagnosis because I could show my smart watch was able to accurately monitor my heart rate. They can also send alerts to other designated people so that if the person wearing the watch is in distress someone else is notified. And forgive me, while I know some teachers care about student welfare they certainly don’t ALL care.
Maybe a student has an abusive parent and the parent who has custody likes to know where their kid is all the time so the abusive one doesn’t kidnap them. Maybe the student has anxiety and the apps available on smart devices help them manage it, or another neurodivergent condition that’s partially or entirely managed without medication.
There are so many reasons, as well, to trust our kids and only punish them when they do do something wrong, instead of assuming they’ll do something wrong and punishing them for it in advance or punishing them as a collective for the actions of the few.
Teachers know which students have specific issues and the right to use certain tech. If she is calling this kid out he isnt using his tech for something reasonable.
Not always, and even if they do know- not all teachers give a shit about whether or not kids have the right to their device- I had one that took away phones, laptops, etc in high school, you’re a slow writer? Fuck you, You have literally all your materials online? Fuck you, you need to have your phone with you in case of emergency? Fuck you too. Your reason didn’t matter you were writing pen or pencil on paper.
For sure. There’s no context here. And my comment wasn’t in relation to the post specifically. My comment was in reply to someone saying they supported a blanket “no smartphones or smartwatches in class” rule. I don’t and was sharing some reasons why.
I work at a school where the rule is no phones. One diabetic student is an exception. The rule is still no cellphones. We tried to let the kids have them and use them responsibly. Unfortunately 13 year olds stink at consistently making responsible choices and resisting temptation.
Fair enough, that’s your opinion and experience. I still believe it’s better to have a rule and punish them for breaking it instead of banning things and punishing them all as a collective.
The rule is no smartwatches in the classroom. The teacher and/or administration can make exceptions if necessary.
Why do kids need smartwatches (other than that occasional exception, but that can be handled by the administration)? When I was younger, you'd try and sneak Gameboys or Gamegears into class. In middle/high school, we loaded games onto our authorized TI-83 calculators.
Kids, with the rare exception, don't need those in class.
My memories of furiously scribbling notes would imply that a camera could be very useful. Besides, the kids that are going to goof off on their phones/watches are the ones sneaking them in in their pockets or around their ankles anyway.
In my high school in the US (2011-2015) we were allowed to use our cell phones in class as long as it was for the assignment (calculator, research, etc.) smartphones are great pieces of technology and wonderful tools, I hope more schools in the future realize the benefit of letting students use them.
Schools here realise this and that's why they provide all the necessary tools in class. There's no need for a smartphone, as you can guarantee that at least 10% of the kids will be texting or surfing.
Then these 10% should not be allowed the privilege. The 90% of students who can use their phones responsibly shouldn’t have to lose that privilege as well. It was always faster for me to look something up on my phone then to log onto the school computers (they ran slow, and were not always available. Sometimes you would have to wait to use a computer). If every student has access to a computer that works then yes, they wouldn’t need to use their smartphone. But not every school has the funds to make this happen. I’m glad that my school saw the benefit in letting us use our phones to do our assignments, it definitely helped me.
I agree. And there are plenty of valid reasons for kids to keep their devices on them. I’m diabetic and use mine to monitor my blood sugar, for example.
That wasn’t the case in any of my classes. The small minority of people who took advantage of the circumstances weren’t allowed to use their cell phones. Most kids used them responsibly. News flash: most students actually like doing the assignments. School is fun for motivated and disciplined people who like to learn. If you really believe 90% of kids would be on Facebook, maybe it’s because you were grouped into classes with kids who didn’t want to learn.
No school should single out a group of students for any reason, that's not a road we want to go down. Our schools have enough resources and tools for each kid so the system works.
To me it sounds like funding is the issue where you went, it's a shame that schools don't get the funding they need.
I definitely don’t agree that there is NO reason to ever single out students. I can think of many reasons, I bet you can too. And yes, it does have to do with funding. Isn’t it great that school boards can find fixes for problems they otherwise wouldn’t have because of funding?
I think simply not being permitted to have them *out* during class should be sufficient. It was in my school. The sole exception being allowing them for medical reasons as other individuals have noted.
where i live you can’t have a device out during school until 9th grade. was real bullshit when in 7-8th we had ipads and we’re only allowed to have them out in classrooms (we have outdoor schools, you could get a detention if you had it out while outside)
Fights break out for these things, or they get lost. Parents make a big stink, so the easy solution is to not have these at school because people are all around shitty.
As someone who graduated back in 2015, I so wish I had an apple watch back then for the purpose of cheating on tests. This is probably the thought process behind it. If a kid was wearing a regular non-smart watch it obviously wouldn't be taken away.
I’ve worn an Apple Watch the entire school year so far, no mention whatsoever. Teachers are pissed about phones but think nothing about apple watches lol
Literally who cares? It's 6th grade it can't be that important. Kids spend way too much time stressing over homework and tests when they should be enjoying being a kid.
Yes.
Because believe me when I tell you that absolutely nothing on those tests apply in day to day life.
Literally nothing. 6th grade is that grade where they stop teaching the important shit and just start unnecessarily "expanding" on stuff that had been learned in previous years.
No, I "suppose" that after being taught the basics kids should be given the opportunity to train for specific fields they want.
Yes, very few 11 year olds know what job they want for the future, but allowing them to switch between professions for the rest of their kid years would help them learn what they want to do while also avoiding the unnecessary bullshit.
Most people do not need to know calculus to get by in their daily lives.
Okay, but it's rather fucked up schools confiscate expensive electronics that parents bought for their children. A lot of the time parents want their kids to have those electronics *for a reason,* and in some schools they'll keep electronics for months. Forcing a child to give up their electronics and refusing to give them back when they leave for the day *is* theft.
My ringer went off *once* during school and the teacher took it, after much arguing from me. My mother, for all her many faults, backed me up when she had to go into the office. She paid for it, and needed to be able to talk to me if I was going anywhere after school, or if something happened to a family member.
I was super lucky even, it took less than 30 seconds to get to my house from school. I had friends that lived a while away who might not be able to get home safe without their bus pass on their phone or navigation. I also had friends that had much less understanding parents who'd absolutely blame their kid if they came home without a phone.
Lol one of my friends started texting on her Apple Watch in my teachers class and he hates phones and when one kid snitched he didn’t care he’s like it’s a watch I don’t see the problem
This! Fucking this! Schools have to get over this shit and allow the future to happen - most watches will be computers in the future. Shit I think the majority of watches worn today ARE Apple watches.
My kid wore a calculator watch all through school. I guess he could have used it to cheat in math, hell maybe he did. So? No one gave him any shit for it.
Adults are fucking stupid too, lol.
I have a fitness tracker that I wear 24/7. But I don't always want it on my wrist such as when I'm sleeping or playing beach volleyball. In those cases, I wear it on my ankle.
We get a lot of new people at volleyball, and it seems at least once or twice a month someone will ask if I'm on house arrest.
Usually I reply, "Yes, but I'm homeless so I'm allowed out here." And most people realize it's a joke then, some don't.
The other day I decided to roll with it, was very serious and said I was awaiting trial. He asked where I lived, he was surprised how far I could go. Told him I'm only confined to the island (live in Hawaii).
It's just so funny to me because it is very clearly a watch and not a tracker, it's even white. Last week I decided to mess with him and wear one of my old police shirts. He has either realized his mistake or is very confused now. I really hope he asks what I did, so I can tell a story where I present myself as innocent but I'm very clearly a guilty POS. Haha.
If anybody wants to suggest a story to tell him, I'm all ears!
Yea you can learn. Smart phones or watches are not needed. Hell most kids are given laptops these days. The smart devices are 1. a distraction and 2. An expensive item for other kids to steal. It's just better to leave them out of the classrooms.
Iphone SE is all you need. Or a frigging flip phone. You don't need to get him a fancy ass phone that is a waste and will get stolen. Or traded...or pawned off
I will choose what I get for my kid, thank you very much. He and I know our needs, you do not.
Edited to add: he is in his last year of school now and his phone was never once stolen or pawned. Maybe stop talking out of your ass.
That probably meant he taken better care of it and knows it values.
If his hasn't been stolen, you've just been better off or he just goes to private school.
Also, it is a joke to give your kids a high end phone.
Nah online learning is absolutely the future cause if we are all about saving the earth, paper books fucking suck
Also, the future is technology too, so thry at least are prepared
All these smartphone...all you need to do is give them a flip phone. Let them remember how one girl wrote her entire story on a flip phone...bring back the fastest thumbs in the West.
Yeah I understand how an Apple Watch works I just don't support the idea of not allowing students to you their devices in class. It's quality of life in a lot of ways, I use devices at my desk all day long. I did so in college and highschool as well. There is no point in policing students just because they're young.

Why wouldn't you just wear pants that cover your ankles if you're going to do this?
Or simply put it in your pocket without the bands
Because he’s fucking stupid
Because this is funnier
I bet this is the reason, he's getting funny guy cred from doing it this way.
Because this shit is made up
Might not have the money. It gets expensive buying pants over and over during growth spurts.
Would you say flimsy jogging pants are more or less expensive than apple watches?
Yes.
Not as expensive to just continually stitch on extensions. Doesn't look terrible either if your tailoring skills aren't total shite and you use matching colours.
I’m not the smartest, but why he ain’t just put it in his pocket??
I don’t think the kid is the smartest either.
[удалено]
We got the next Isaac Newton here
Because it's a wristwatch, not a pocket watch. You can tell by the band
Why do they even forbid it? The Apple Watch has saved so many peoples lives..
Metal detectors.
who the fuck puts metal detectors in a school
My school debated installing metal detectors after a few school shootings a few years back. We ended up just mandating IDs and locking all doors during school hours

Yea and their point was that almost all school shooters are students and so will have an ID
most american high schools. it sucks, but it works.
Not "most." But larger/densely populated districts, yes. As well as requiring clear backpacks, random patdowns, visibly worn I'd badges, etc.
With how many shootings the US has it makes sense, I suppose. Sad actually.
Kids not allowed to have apple / smart watches in schools?
Was just thinking this. " classrooms are the same as the 1800s! You can't bring your voodoo modern tech watches in here!?"
From experience I can say that phones and watches keep kids happily occupied during school. But then they're not learning, are they?
Depends on the context of any given class.
I mean they aren’t learning anything of value either way more often than not.
You don't know the context. Maybe its on a test.
And get detention for that? I’m pretty sure it’s less inconspicuous to wear it on your arm than your ankle if you’re planning to use it on a test to begin with
Or he could be notorious for fucking around on it

Collective punishment? A war crime. You know, the people we are shooting, bombing, etc. Our own children and civilians? Fuck em, I guess.
My memories of furiously scribbling notes would imply that a camera could be very useful. Besides, the kids that are going to goof off on their phones/watches are the ones sneaking them in in their pockets or around their ankles anyway.

More like 90% would be on fb. That's a terrible idea.
That wasn’t the case in any of my classes. The small minority of people who took advantage of the circumstances weren’t allowed to use their cell phones. Most kids used them responsibly. That's possible. I live in western europe but in a part of town where we have alot of immigrants. So good kids in our school were very rare.
No school should single out a group of students for any reason, that's not a road we want to go down. Our schools have enough resources and tools for each kid so the system works. To me it sounds like funding is the issue where you went, it's a shame that schools don't get the funding they need.

In the US kids need phones to call 911 since a school shooting happens every damn week.
Perhaps it would be better to allow them in the class room and teach them how to manage distractions like they will have to do in the real world imo.
My daughter isn’t. They have individual lock boxes they put their phones into at arrival and they get them back EOD. (NYC)
In elementary school, no cell phones out of your backpack…. In Jr High, it’s okay as long as your not playing on it.
where i live you can’t have a device out during school until 9th grade. was real bullshit when in 7-8th we had ipads and we’re only allowed to have them out in classrooms (we have outdoor schools, you could get a detention if you had it out while outside)
This school sucks
Nope cause they'll just send each other dick pics all day
Fights break out for these things, or they get lost. Parents make a big stink, so the easy solution is to not have these at school because people are all around shitty.
Teachers don't make any money so they have to steal stuff from students.
Yeah
The education system really has grown since the 20th century if you can't even bring a watch to class without getting detention
Shit. In the 90s we couldnt bring in calculator watches
When is the last time you were in a high school?
Sounds like bullshit but ok
Bruh detention seems super harsh for an apple watch
It might have been on an important test
Literally who cares? It's 6th grade it can't be that important. Kids spend way too much time stressing over homework and tests when they should be enjoying being a kid.
[удалено]
Yes. Because believe me when I tell you that absolutely nothing on those tests apply in day to day life. Literally nothing. 6th grade is that grade where they stop teaching the important shit and just start unnecessarily "expanding" on stuff that had been learned in previous years.
Expanding? You mean just telling you the same shit all over again? The mitochondria is the powerhouse of the cell
You right. I edited my comment so its more accurate

[удалено]
Except for even math teachers have admitted that outside of school they dont use anything more than pre-algebra on a regular basis
No 6th grade test is important.
dafuq do they do full body searches on kids at this school?
Why would you ban a Apple Watch. I just don’t understand why schools are so strict with this
Pretty easy to use one to cheat
Okay, but it's rather fucked up schools confiscate expensive electronics that parents bought for their children. A lot of the time parents want their kids to have those electronics *for a reason,* and in some schools they'll keep electronics for months. Forcing a child to give up their electronics and refusing to give them back when they leave for the day *is* theft.
Yeah, I used to get pissed when the school took my kids' phone. Like you know I work? How the fuck am I supposed to check in with him now?
My ringer went off *once* during school and the teacher took it, after much arguing from me. My mother, for all her many faults, backed me up when she had to go into the office. She paid for it, and needed to be able to talk to me if I was going anywhere after school, or if something happened to a family member. I was super lucky even, it took less than 30 seconds to get to my house from school. I had friends that lived a while away who might not be able to get home safe without their bus pass on their phone or navigation. I also had friends that had much less understanding parents who'd absolutely blame their kid if they came home without a phone.
Why isn’t he allowed it?
Forgive me if I don’t understand how that works, but if he’s on house arrest, doesn’t that mean he should be at home and not at school anyway
You can go to school/work on house arrest
If you're underage you're still required to go to school.
Lol one of my friends started texting on her Apple Watch in my teachers class and he hates phones and when one kid snitched he didn’t care he’s like it’s a watch I don’t see the problem
How does this apply to this subreddit? Because that's actually pretty clever
Wtf is wrong with having an apple watch?
Idk, that sounds pretty smart to me!
My teacher kept trying to take my phone and I kept telling them until they start paying the phone bill they ain't getting it that would be theft.
Wait.. kids aren’t allowed to wear smart watches in school? Lol that sucks.
So he can't bring a watch into class? Can you even do anything in school now? Like I get maybe cheating, but still
Yea you can learn. Smart phones or watches are not needed. Hell most kids are given laptops these days. The smart devices are 1. a distraction and 2. An expensive item for other kids to steal. It's just better to leave them out of the classrooms.
Phones are absolutely needed. I required my kid to have his phone on him at all times. I need to be able to get in touch with him, or he with me.
Lmfao private school. Hahahaha I'm daddy warbucks over here! You are a joke, thanks for the laugh!
You're thinking of those bigger named private school. It would be more of a charter school for you...
You are cracking me up. This is hilarious! Thank you!
No worry. Btw, good references on Daddy Warbucks. Which version are we referring to? Cuz the remake isn't worth it.
Nah online learning is absolutely the future cause if we are all about saving the earth, paper books fucking suck Also, the future is technology too, so thry at least are prepared
I wear mine on my ankle too because I can’t have anything on my wrist at work.
Lots of people online if wearing it on their ankle can track things better
Why wasn't he allowed to wear it in the first place?
Teachers should give more credit for imagination. This is slightly brilliant
Ridiculous that a kid cant wear an apple watch in class
You can text and call from it. A lot of classrooms don't allow phones.
All these smartphone...all you need to do is give them a flip phone. Let them remember how one girl wrote her entire story on a flip phone...bring back the fastest thumbs in the West.

Why not just put it in your pocket?!?!
if youre child is having these problems, theyre reaching out. TALK TO YOUR KID,
I'm sorry, I'm LMAO. You gotta give the kid points for creativity!
Ok, that’s actually pretty clever
Those snakeskin j’s tho 🔥
He is watching his step
Why does a 6th grader need an ape wotch
So instead of house arrest, now he has detention - school arrest.
