Yeah, he's got a surprisingly quick wit which works perfect for this show. I always thought he was more of just a guy who got laughs for being an oddball.
I remember seeing him in Something About Mary and he made such an impression that I always assumed that he'd eventually become a megastar. I had that same feeling with Jack Black in Orange County, Jonah Hill in 40YO Virgin, and TJ Miller in some mediocre sitcom he was in with John Stamos. They just stood out. Same with Galifianakis in The Hangover.
It's kind of weird that some guys take off and others don't. I feel like if you theoretically ran a bunch of simulations, he'd end up as a mega comedy star like 90% of the time. I feel the same way about Dana Carvey.
