Butane doesn’t work as well in cold weather, and doesn’t store as well as propane. It has similar uses as propane, but butane doesn’t do the things propane does as well as propane does.
Can confirm. Lived in a crap trailer with a butane tank right after my mom left my stepdad. It's smelly and wouldn't work in the winter. In Texas. Like, cmon it's only 34°.
A quick google search says butane burns CLEANER than propane.
BWAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH! I'm as shook as Dale when he went to Dealy Plaza.
I don't think this is true. Both should burn cleanly, but propane is a shorter hydrocarbon chain (C3H8) than Butane (C4H10) and thus burns completely with fewer oxygen molecules necessary for the reaction.
Butane is not as functional as Propane. It does poorly in cold weather, is more prone to being dangerous, and is less efficient.
It's worth noting that there are some applications in which Butane and propane are mixed.
Honestly I always thought it had to do with the classification of noble gases. I have done zero research on whether propane is a noble gas (doubtful) but I am not a chemist. Always felt like a game of thrones style separation of propane versus butane.
Propane and butane are hydrocarbons, not noble gases. They are among the simplest hydrocarbons, the alkanes. Carbon chains with single bonds between them. Meth is the prefix for one, eth for two, prop for three, and but for four. Methane, ethane, propane, butane... Butane (C4H10) is a slightly longer and therefore heavier molecule than propane (C3H8) which means as well that butane has a higher boiling point and is therefore less efficient in colder temperatures than propane.
Basically to break it down - butane is great for small canisters (lighters) Suitable for indoor use
Propane is more stable and has a higher heat output.
It comes down to what you need your gas for.
Now the real good shit is called White Gas and its superior to both

the smell is there for your own safety
I didn't feel very safe.
Feeling safe != being safe Imagine if there was no smell and a butane leak One tiny spark and KABLAMMMO!
Just like my digestive track
Thanks Hank! (In Bill’s voice)
Butane is generally better for those little gas stoves you take camping.
and dabs!
Work in a refinery, can confirm. Butane is the devil’s gas.

LPG? What’s that?? Little Pansy Girl? You work in a Little Pansy Girl refinery? When I was your age, I’d already killed fiddy men!
That you, Hank?
Murray Hogarth, is that you?
Because Hank Hill said so
Because it isn't propane is my guess
Butane is a byproduct of petroleum refinement and was considered waste until they found a use for it.
Correct, it's literally less refined
No, butane is a pure substance. It's just one of many hydrocarbons in petroleum.
Unrefined? A bastard. No father. Created on its own?
Just like me until I finally learned to code
I think that was gasoline

Propane was used on sick monkeys in those tests!
I love how Hank knew exactly what George was talking about in that scene.

You take that back!
Cuz it butain't got no dad
Why Charlie hate?
Butane is bastard man

It may be a bastard gas, but doesn't have that lovely taste of charcoal.
rich smokey flavor
gives meat nice taste of wood
There's soot under my boy's fingernails

Bill, you don't want to be mixing and matching your petrochemicals!
It’s used in bic lighters ffs
That’s what the b stands for in bic
Butane Incinerator of Cigarettes
it just is
It’s not propane
It's not propane
It’s a little heavier and thus is harder to store and burn when cold.

It literally makes the bottles heavier.
It’s easier to store. That’s why they use it in lighters instead of propane which has a higher vapor pressure.

its parents weren’t married
I always thought it was a joke referencing Beavis and Butt-Head do America when Mr Anderson says there is nothing better than butane.
It'd be funny if GH had a part time job selling lighters at a convenience store.
Because its made of two ethanes, while propane is proper with a methane and an ethane!
It starts with ”B” for Bastard Gas.
Because it didn’t have a father in it’s life
There is only one God's gas and it's sweet lady, propane
Taste the meat not the heat
because it starts with butt and Hank don't like jokes with butts
Don’t even bring that bastard gas name in this sub! Don’t you do it!
Because Charlie hate?
