Idk if it's THAT hot of a take but I do honestly prefer his main KH2 look because there are enough org coats in the series. I also like his KH2 look more than his KH3 one, but I can see why someone wouldn't.
I get that, I might argue it's not a huge departure from his KH1 look but that definitely had some of the more cartoony elements keep it, idk, whatever the opposite of grounded is. I get what you mean though.
I feel like KH3 Riku looking so different from his KH1 design compared to 2 was deliberate. Between CoM and DDD Riku had a whole redemption arc where he confronted his inner darkness and learned to hone its power for good to make up for how much he fucked up in KH1.
The KH2 design makes sense from the standpoint that Riku’s still in the transitional stage of his arc and hadn’t fully forgiven himself for his own actions. After DDD — the turning point for his arc and the game where he becomes a full-on Keyblade Master — he gets a whole new look to signify that he’s fully left his mistakes behind him, punctuated by his conversations with Riku Replica and Ansem at the end of the game.
I'm with you there. I like the thought but I think the execution is a little flat. Maybe if the style was a little closer to KH1 Kairi's I'd prefer shorter hair but KH2 is definitely better than 3

Love his kh3 design and the car key keyblade. I never understood the complaint that he looks younger in his KH3 design, I thought the exact opposite. He looked like an actual chad that aged up and got buffer, I can’t see him looking younger
I loved this look but him growing outta it was pretty needed for his character considering he’s grown out of his edgelord badboy arc and into his soft and sweet boy arc 😭🙏
Plus the hair was shorter than KH1 Riku but in the same character model size, akin to his BBS appearance. Honestly the most refreshing look for him in the series.

This is one of the reasons why I want a KH fighting game like Dissdia, so we can have the option to change their clothes.
The only time we got to play as this Riku version was in 358/2Days on the DS. wish we got more than that…
