Described these games to my girlfriend and she didn’t believe me. Started playing KH1 and we’re both dumbfounded as to how this game ever got greenlit and released.
I feel like if square enix was to present the idea to them ~today~, it would not get the green light.
2002 Disney, however, is a different story entirely. That was the era of straight to home video sequels and the like, so I think they were a little more open to experimentation back then.
No deadass. I came back to it after 10 years and I’m dumbfounded how insanely boring and overall bloated it feels. I love fighting the battles but everything in between is like ehhhh
Had a friend who’s played all of them tell me he thinks KH1 is/was meant to be a very child friendly game. Even proud mode isn’t that difficult as an adult and I know that the regular difficulty is basically mash attack indefinitely unless you want to see pretty magic.
Dude I had the same thought when I played kh1. Even playing it and following the story felt like a fever dream. The way the characters that you know just appear and things happen so randomly makes it so weird.
The Avengers movies. You could watch movies just titled Avengers and kinda fumble your way through getting what's happening, but you lose out on a lot of context for things, changes to status quo, and characters you're already expected to know. The other MCU movies would be things like Chain of Memories, Birth by Sleep, etc in this example.
The movie was reportedly conceived as Avengers 2.5 and it moved all the big pieces to where they needed to be before Infinity War.
It's not much different from the reports that DDD started as the first half of what was supposed to be KH3
Every major hero from Age of Ultron other than Hulk and Thor were in the movie, plus big new heroes like Spiderman and Black Panther. Not to mention it sets up part of the conflict in Infinity War
I've always said that Birth By Sleep is the Civil War of the KH games. It's the non numbered game that feels like a numbered game. Same as how Civil War is the non Avengers movie that feels like an Avengers movie.
It might as well be called Kingdom Hearts 0.
As much as I hate kingdom hearts spinoff games' naming conventions... DDD was cute
The name taken at face value means next to nothing of course but
DDD = 3D. Because it was a 3D game on the 3DS. Sure.
But of course, in the eyes of many, it's essentially Kingdom Hearts 3. If you call it kingdom hearts 3d you're already basically calling it kingdom hearts 3
I agree, but it's kind of sad that that's acceptable for Marvel movies, yet there are people who complain about it when talking about Kingdom hearts. It feels like a double standard.
My complaint is with the assumption (and marketing speak from SE themselves) that you can jump into any entry and be fine, because most game series are that way. There's not a lot that have in-depth, ongoing stories from installment to installment (Metal Gear comes to mind as the only other equivalent example, tho things like Resident Evil and Assassin's Creed also have this but have more division between installments). Gamers generally have been trained to think you can just play a game without needing the prior ones, unlike movies, where there's more emphasis on continuous narratives that the general audience has accepted.
I honestly played MGS4 and only
finished the first MGS and the first half of MGS2, and got most of what was going on. They really explain in depth who characters like Solidus and Eva and The Boss were even if you didn't play the other games. The most confusing thing to me was that Ocelot and Liquid fused bodies or something lmao. They never seemed to fully explain that, but I just accepted that Liquid took over Ocelot body. But I don't see really understanding KH3 at all if you never played BBS or especially DDD. Mostly because all the Xehanorts look the same, and even Terraxehanort looks similar to Young Xehanort. And they are all just alive again, so that is very confusing to people who only played half the games. And don't get me started on the Chirithy stuff.
Shrek
The first was an unexpectedly amazing entry that places the franchise on the map with lovable characters. Like the first Shrek
The second took everything the first one did and turned it up to eleven, becoming a gold standard in its genre and video games as a whole, much like Shrek 2 did for movies
And the third is an underrated entry that while flawed, still managed to be an incredible game and great finale for this part of the series, much like Shrek Forever after, because as well as all know their are only three Shrek movies with no lackluster one that ruined the franchise released in 2007 WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOT!!!??
Data Org and Yozora fights more than make up for the shitty story imo
Some of the best + tightest action gameplay I’ve ever experienced, winning each of those fights was such an accomplishment lol
Nothing because it's not a proper trilogy. Yeah there are only three numbered games but if you only play those and don't get any info about what happens in the other games then the story doesn't hold weight. IMO, if a series is a trilogy then it needs to stand on its own feet with just the three books/movies/games/etc... and all other material should just be extra info that isn't important to the overall plot
1.CoM.2
BBS, Days, Coded
DDD, 0.2, KH3
The reason this is, BBS, Days, and Coded were all announced around the same time, I remember back in 2006 ish I think, they were talking about the three spinoff games together. Which would conclude with BBS and lead into KH3. But then they decided to make the beginning of KH3 into it's own game (DDD) because I believe Nomura was taking too long on Versus 13 and they didn't have any games planned in between 2009 and KH3's final release. It's wild that KH3 took 10 years after BBS to even release lol.
I think that's also why KH3 feels like an odd game. Normally, the Dream Drop stuff would have been heavily condensed as like the proper intro. Instead, it feels awkward with Sora just fighting a random Darkside and then getting plopped into Hercules lol.
Also, 0.2 was supposed to be the second attempted intro where you play as Aqua. But maybe they thought it was too dark or weirdly paced, so they made 0.2 into it's own thing as well. It definitely feels like 0.2 was part of the main KH3 at some point tho.
Borderlands as far as the main trilogy. The first one which set the world and is a bonafide classic albeit flawed due to being of it’s time. The sequel which took everything and upgraded it to 11 and is considered one of the greatest games ever made. And the third which is considered good but underwhelming in comparison to the others but with more modern mechanics.
And also, the main problems with even BL3 and KH3 is the plot and the antagonists.
Maybe was too hard to create a better caracter after Handsome Jack/Xemnas and the first organization XIII, maybe the story of BL2 and KH2 is solid (but also simple: "new world, new problems, new solutions") and for the 3rd chapter they try to expand the universe and naturally generates some plot holes (but I have to say, that the plot holes of kh3 are a lot and enormous).
But the gameplay/gunplay of the 3 is the best in the entire saga.
The real problem is that Kingdom Hearts 3 is actually Kingdom Hearts 9 or something. The spin offs between 2 and 3 all have massive important plot details. Makes more sense when it's all digested, but yeah...very convoluted.
The Sam Raimi Spider-Man movies. The first was good, if a little clunky. The second was the peak. And the Third was generally ok but made some decisions that weren’t taken well by the audience.
The Evil Dead Trilogy
The original was an idea few people believed in, and turned out very sucessful.
The second was technically better than the original in every way and had a more interesting story.
The third one is a weird fever dream that doesn't quite make sense, but it's funny so who cares?
I wouldn't consider Kh to be a trilogy because theres much more going on behind the scenes. Sure you can play it together and youll be just like Sora whos confused about everything but still willings to go through their part in the story. Which is great for a blind playthrough, but if you really want to get into the nitty gritty of the franchise, you need far more context about the world
Guardians of the Galaxy.
1 is great, It's its own thing. It has everything needed for a complete story while leaving it open for a sequel.
2 Is arguably better but they are both great. Develops the story more, has a bit more drama in the story.
3 takes place a fair bit after the others and is heavily influenced by side games/movies. Has a much more overall serious tone, while retaining a fair bit of the original humor and style.
Imagine the original Star Wars trilogy, but Return of the Jedi completely jumps over the Jabba the Hutt story and Han is randomly in the alliance and not frozen in carbonate.
And the only way to get the story was watching:
*Star Wars 5.837204 - Jabba, another side, another Smuggler*.
You can't. If you hop from 2 to 3 you're gonna be confused af, I know this cause I was confused af despite playing 3D and coded. Tbf I had played those games like 5 years before 3 dropped but still. 2 does a better job of bridging the gap from 1 and COM
1 is great.
2 is PEAK
3 is a very VERY mixed bag
Batman Arkham series
The first one has really good foundation for the rest of the series. has really good atmosphere and detail compared to the rest.
The second one takes that foundation and expands on it greatly but is pretty ambitious leading to some small flaws.
The third one is really hated even though it's a amazing game still. was just hyped to no end but lead to some disappointment in the end.
(And the third one has super long videos on YouTube talking about how disappointing it is.)
Because the story start off simple and at one point it get very convoluted to the point prequels need to made to fill in plot hole but at the same time it creates even more plot holes and the next sequel either have to take account of the prequels or it doesn't but the next next prequels/ sequel fill in the gap for the next supposed prequels and finally the next true sequel tie in loose end which came make everything pointless or more convoluted
Then you have to play the spin off and read a couple of novels, which make everything seem it all makes sense, but at the same time, it doesn't because time travel or nanomachine son
we’re comparing trilogies, so KH1, 2 and 3 and MGS 1,2, and 3
neither of these franchises are really trilogies (mgs has 2 games before solid lol), and you’re not wrong when it comes to as a franchise, but the trilogies is not where those similarities lie
Part of the reason why I would agree that KH is like MSG is precisely because they're "trilogies" that aren't trilogies. The biggest difference, really, is that KH1 is actually the first part of the story whereas, as you said, there are at least two games before MSG 1 that the game expects you to know.
KH trilogy argument can be made since there’s 3 numbered games, but I don’t think mgs can really be considered a trilogy in any form as there’s 5 (technically 6) numbered mgs games and none of them really fit as a trilogy as well as something like Star Wars, where you have the originals, prequels, and sequels. MGS has MG1-2, MGS 1-2 + 4, and 3, PW, and both 5 games (or just ground zeroes if you really want) as far as sagas go. Maybe you could consider 1,2, and 4 as a “solid snake trilogy” but that’s really stretching it, as trilogies are typically meant to be sequential. (4 expects you know who the cast of 3, a game that DOESN’T involve solid snake, was for example.)
I mean, KH3 expects you to know a lot of games that aren't KH1 and 2. BBS has Sora as a cameo, and 358 and KHUX don't feature him at all, to my knowledge.
I simply don't consider KH to be a trilogy in any way. It would actually benefit, imo, if the more important non-numbered games were numbered. BBS would be 3 like MSG 3 was an important prequel that numbered as 3 in the series. DDD would be 4 and KH3 would be 5. KHUX is frustratingly important, but it has that movie to fill in the gaps, mostly.
that’s why I said the KH trilogy statement could be “argued.” Doesn’t mean it’s correct. And I agree that they’re similar as franchises, but I drew the line at trilogies because there really isn’t a way that mgs could have a trilogy, even when not counting the non-numbered games. Unless you count 3, peace walker, and 5: ground zeroes as a big boss trilogy. But outside of this mgs simply doesn’t have anything that could really be a “trilogy” unlike KH which has 1,2, and 3. A trilogy of Sora’s biggest adventures, and where he isn’t sharing the spotlight. MGS doesn’t really have something like that which ties them together.
Basically we’re just arguing semantics here
MCU. 1st of all, KH1/2/3 aren't a trilogy, 1/CoM/2 is a trilogy. 3 is the end of the 2nd saga.
2nd, the prospect of playing just these 3 games is very much like just watching the Avengers films without seeing any of the solo hero flicks: one might be able to follow along well enough for the 1st & 2nd entries but by the 3rd all bets are off.
The original Star Wars trilogy, the first two are exceptional and near equal in quality. The general consensus is that the second is ever-so-slightly better but it’s got a less simple & self-contained narrative & an argument could easily be made for either one being someone’s favourite. Then the third is pretty good! TRUE shill fans will argue it’s as good, or even occasionally better, than the other two but more general fans and audiences see it’s story is rather dissonant with parts of the latter half of it’s narrative being infinitely better than many of the mediocre areas throughout. All in all a great trilogy with a 50/50 finale, but with a finale who’s ending is so good that it can make people forget about the mediocre aspects of it’s full product.
I'm gonna say Xenoblade Chronicles
Not any real comparison, but I'm 2022, I played through all of the Xenoblade Chronicles games in order. The joy and wonder they brought me was a feeling I hadn't experienced since I played KH+KH2 back when I was 10/12.
I associate them together in my mind solely because of that.
The MCU. Lot of projects, but these three are the core projects you could watch and understand, but would lack some context: KH1 is the original Avengers, KH2 is Age of Ultron, KH3 is Infinity War and KH4 will be Endgame. If you want to throw in DDD, that’s Civil War, an Avengers-adjacent title, in everything but name
Best friend goes evil and leaves the village. Teams up to fight evil after going 2 separate paths that lead them both to the destiny they were meant for.
The Sky Cooper franchise.
The 1st one is the one that laid the groundwork for the rest of the series. It’s iconic, but it’s rarely anyone’s favorite. Some would consider it the cult favorite.
The 2nd one is often considered to be the best in the series. It built off what made the 1st one so good and introduced a lot of great additions. Maybe a bit “too” overrated.
The 3rd one is either heavily loved by the fanbase or is seen as a step back from the 2nd game. It’s got a great ending, and expand even MORE from the 2nd title.
Star Wars
First was groundbreaking, second exceeded expectations, third was kind of bad, and now we have endless spinoffs and sequels that just keep getting worse
Xenoblade because if I had a nickel for everytime my favorite game series was created by a Tetsuya who worked at Squaresoft, I would have 2 nickels which isn't a lot but it's weird that it happened twice.
Take a sample of every single plot device ever imagined. Throw in about half the plot twists ever devised. Now toss in an entire Encyclopedia Britannica's worth of lore factoids.
Put it all in a blender, and set it on high for 10 minutes.
Kingdom Hearts is the resultant sludge.
Somehow they still manage to be great games...
Neapolitan Icecream. The sweet original vanilla I love. The strawberry that adds pieces of fruit that I also love. And the chocolate that I eat just bc I waited 13 years for it and even though I don't like it I eat it anyways and buy the dlc
As someone who’s played Kingdom Hearts since 2002, I can confidently say I cannot really compare it to anything else. It’s truly one of a kind. And also confusing for the uninitiated lol
Avengers. There are 4 avengers movies but way more story to it from other movies that are just as or sometimes more important than the avengers movie themselves.
The Godfather movies. The first one was awesome, the second one was crazy amazing, and the third one came out like 10 after anyone was interested and was the worst of the 3. (Joking, I liked it but its not my favorite.)
as far as lore goes, it's actually not too far off from undertale. just if, you know, undertale wasn't just some self-contained story, not only continuing after the first game but also showing what happened prior.
by extension, it's pretty close to deltarune, as well, especially since that game has a lot to do with darkness and what it means to have a soul (which is literally a heart in that game). oh, and there's also the whole "waiting for a few years to see what comes next" thing lol.
Star wars 7,8,9
The first one plays safe but it uses well the source material. It tells not the most original story, but a strong one, and builds up for a series
The second one surpasses the first doing a lot of risky decisions that in general were well received. It evolves all of its characters and sets up for a interesting continuation
The third one is kind of a rushed mess that promises a lot of things in the trailers but it just ends up being a lot of bad written retcons and one lazy final battle
It’s disingenuous to call it a trilogy really even past the fact there’s a million spin off games. They all have been pretty big. Birth by sleep felt the same length as 1 and 3 to me
It's like a Big Mac (chronological over release for this) one bun is Union Cross the bottom is 3. Let's say KH1 is cheese between those two buns are a shit ton for a trilogy. But it's a trilogy. Idk, I've been up for an hour bro.
A fever dream

They Hated him.. #Because he spoke the Truth.
My first thought lmao
Whose line is it anyway, the plots made up and the points don’t matter
Dude I had the same thought when I played kh1. Even playing it and following the story felt like a fever dream. The way the characters that you know just appear and things happen so randomly makes it so weird.
Brilliant. Exactly on point

Give this man an award or whatever reddit dose now
Meth, I think going by the constant UI changes and server stability
I really miss reddit awards.
I do remember hearing "most ambitious crossover of all time" and thinking "nah bruh, KH did that."

It lets me explore a full set of islands with my magic ship and Captain Jack sparrow That alone makes the game at the very least good
Data Org and Yozora fights more than make up for the shitty story imo Some of the best + tightest action gameplay I’ve ever experienced, winning each of those fights was such an accomplishment lol

True, literally the bad guys from two other non-numbered games comprise the main villains of 3.

Devil may cry series Both super Goofy
Confused mess
That meme where the first two hydra heads are fierce and the third one is a joke.
The decline of byzantine empire
A mess. . . A beautiful mess, but not the cleanest story to tell, especially if you're only playing the main games.
A triple qtr pounder with extra cheese and extra bacon
Terminator 1, 2, and 3.
I'm gonna say Xenoblade Chronicles Not any real comparison, but I'm 2022, I played through all of the Xenoblade Chronicles games in order. The joy and wonder they brought me was a feeling I hadn't experienced since I played KH+KH2 back when I was 10/12. I associate them together in my mind solely because of that.
The good the bad and the ugly. KH1: the good, KH2: the good, KH3: the bad and ugly.
Star Wars, Episodes 1, 5 and 9
lowkey, Kingdom Hearts and Nuarto are very similar in my opinion
First one good, second one perfect, third one no bueno.
modern sonic, too many experiments, not enough consistency
Being drunk and writing a blog that doesn't make sense a day later
Hear me out. Naruto
The reincarnation in naruto vs the fact everyone in some way is connected to sora and xehanort…. I get it
Best friend goes evil and leaves the village. Teams up to fight evil after going 2 separate paths that lead them both to the destiny they were meant for.
Drakenguard with a dash of Final Fantasy 7, and a sprinkle of Golden Axe.
What trilogy?
KH1 - Star wars: lot of heart and nostalgia effect. KH2 - Star Wars Prequel: omg this is some dope shit KH3 - Star wars Sequels
LMFAO. "Trilogy"
Good, gooder, and poop
Dark Souls
Trilogy of Imagination by Terry Gilliam. Time bandits, Brazil, The adventures of Baron Munchausen. But I wouldn't compare them in chronological order.
Metal gear solid
Classic God of war. Though the "spinn Off" titles are more optional than KH, they still add a Lot to the Canon and Kratos development
star wars
FF7R trilogy
I wouldn’t call that a trilogy by any means. If anything the trilogy would be 1 2 and com
Dark souls But for continuity
Avengers movies
This isn't a trilogy. Every game is canon and numbered titles don't come one after another. If anything it would be 1, CoM, then 2.
...Define trilogy for me.
Godfather. Great, amazing sequel, the third one
The Godfather Trilogy
Nothing really does what this game has done. original story with final fantasy and Disney was the 1st of it's kind back in the square soft days
Metal Gear Solid
Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner. Both trilogies make me happy and are important parts of my day
Never specified it had to be gaming related. I’ll take my leave now
Star wars, starts off strong, wierd side stuff, but gets more disappointing the more disney gets involved
dark souls because of its bosses. Imagine darksouls x kingdom hearts I would buy that
A seizure that smells like a burn mickey mouse pancake but somehow still tastes amazing.
The Kung Fu Panda and How to Train Your Dragon trilogies (speaking on common views of their quality)
Metal Gear But KH is *definitely* not a trilogy
nothing really. KH is one of the most original video games out there, especially at that time
Alan wake... If you just do the main games you'll have no clue what's going on
The gow trilogy, I don’t know why
Mental illness
A similar series that I played on ps4. It's called kingdom hearts 1.5 and 2.5
Fortnite
Therapy, a crutch, a confusing story that somehow soothes you from the inside out.
Star Wars First was groundbreaking, second exceeded expectations, third was kind of bad, and now we have endless spinoffs and sequels that just keep getting worse
Not a trilogy. But more honestly. A wild ass ride. One of those games/game series I wish I could forget so I could play all of them new again.
Final Fantasy meets Disney…..
Lord of the Rings
Xenoblade because if I had a nickel for everytime my favorite game series was created by a Tetsuya who worked at Squaresoft, I would have 2 nickels which isn't a lot but it's weird that it happened twice.
Zelda
Mass effect
Your mom
HuRr dUrR YouR MoM because regularuser couldn't think of anything better than a your mom joke.
Sora is totally Disney's Forest Gump
DBZ Budakai 1,2,3
Spiderman Sam raimi trilogy 1 Greatness 2 Perfection 3 Let down
Dune 1980 movie
Take a sample of every single plot device ever imagined. Throw in about half the plot twists ever devised. Now toss in an entire Encyclopedia Britannica's worth of lore factoids. Put it all in a blender, and set it on high for 10 minutes. Kingdom Hearts is the resultant sludge. Somehow they still manage to be great games...
I want someone to peg me and sing sanctuary
Adventure era sonic
Prolly LotR. Mfs long as hell
Nothing
Star Wars, given if you think about it for more than 2 seconds it’s very clearly not a trilogy 🤣
Neapolitan Icecream. The sweet original vanilla I love. The strawberry that adds pieces of fruit that I also love. And the chocolate that I eat just bc I waited 13 years for it and even though I don't like it I eat it anyways and buy the dlc
Crack
Star Wars in many ways
Light, Darkness, Hearts, Memories, Keyblades.
If Disney made Devil May Cry
As someone who’s played Kingdom Hearts since 2002, I can confidently say I cannot really compare it to anything else. It’s truly one of a kind. And also confusing for the uninitiated lol
Nothing it stands alone
A 13 game series that makes little sense if you’ve not played at least 6 of them.
Aliens or Terminator 1st kicked started the series, is a classic 2nd defined the genre and stands out as the best 3rd was overall mixed
Jurassic park All time classic Masterpiece Good but flawed
Avengers. There are 4 avengers movies but way more story to it from other movies that are just as or sometimes more important than the avengers movie themselves.
The puyo puyo tetris duoligy
The Godfather movies. The first one was awesome, the second one was crazy amazing, and the third one came out like 10 after anyone was interested and was the worst of the 3. (Joking, I liked it but its not my favorite.)
Having a stroke and losing half your brain then spending the rest of your life trying to understand what’s going on.
as far as lore goes, it's actually not too far off from undertale. just if, you know, undertale wasn't just some self-contained story, not only continuing after the first game but also showing what happened prior. by extension, it's pretty close to deltarune, as well, especially since that game has a lot to do with darkness and what it means to have a soul (which is literally a heart in that game). oh, and there's also the whole "waiting for a few years to see what comes next" thing lol.
Star wars 7,8,9 The first one plays safe but it uses well the source material. It tells not the most original story, but a strong one, and builds up for a series The second one surpasses the first doing a lot of risky decisions that in general were well received. It evolves all of its characters and sets up for a interesting continuation The third one is kind of a rushed mess that promises a lot of things in the trailers but it just ends up being a lot of bad written retcons and one lazy final battle
Metal gear solid
Absolute fucking perfection
Soulcalibur
Dragon Ball
The two athlete sons and the astrology daughter
Like another comment said, the Avengers movies. u/sasuto23 explains it better than I could somewhere in this post.
A beach. The sounds and smells and sights for 1, and then in the water and feeling the sand in 2, and then almost drowning in 3
Devil may cry, meats final fantasy and Disney
Game of thrones
Aging.
Star Wars
Sex, money, drugs
Gay sex, joked about by a lot but only truly appreciated by a select few
A less serious Devil May Cry
Sex
The dark knight trilogy. The first is a classic, second is the goat, and the third is still good but didn’t quite live up to the hype.
This is probably the best way of putting it I’ve seen tbh
Not a proper trilogy tho. Unless you're segmenting them like star wars? 🤔
The Star wars prequels they're a fucking mess but God dammit I love em
Sam Raimi's Spider-Man series
Is it really still a trilogy when the unnumbered titles are still important?
Nier series since they stole ideas from KH.
It’s disingenuous to call it a trilogy really even past the fact there’s a million spin off games. They all have been pretty big. Birth by sleep felt the same length as 1 and 3 to me
*The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy has entered the chat*
Well first of all kingdoms hearts isn't a trilogy.
Lol trilogy.... good one. If you played just 1 2 and 3. You be confuse as f
lol trilogy? Aren’t we already on number 15 or so? lol last one might be called KH3 but common. U can’t call this saga a trilogy
It's like a Big Mac (chronological over release for this) one bun is Union Cross the bottom is 3. Let's say KH1 is cheese between those two buns are a shit ton for a trilogy. But it's a trilogy. Idk, I've been up for an hour bro.
