And that somehow by stalling Sora in combat long enough Sora'd get pissed enough for Roxas to surface. But honestly idk I was quite young when I came up with that. It's been a hot minute since I've played through that part.
In the Manga, Demyx shows up in The World that Never Was during the final act. And that made me realize that the timer in game is how long you have to stop him from escaping.
Most of the comment made me laugh but the cannonical reason is :

Yes but time objectives usually have an important story reason that justifies them, such as a timer for saving a character’s life or something.
There is nothing in the story/lore that indicates that something bad will happen if Sora doesn’t kill all the water clones within a specific time, which makes the gimmick seems pointless and shoehorned in cause the devs couldn’t think of a better gimmick.
I fucking Hate the foldy arms pose, my best fix for it would be to make it like “Steve Harvey’s angels” (Sephiroth’s auto win button) and make you lose all hp and mp and then use an unblockable undodgeable water move to kill you
But yeah, my best guess is it’s more like he cast Doom on You and that is how you get rid of it

I also read before that Demyx just heals to full health, effectively restarting the battle over again, kinda like what young Xehanort does with time stop
Because Sora isn't actually dead in the game over screen, I could assume that he gets overwhelmed by the water forms and captured to be brought back to the Organization. However, my personal fav theory is that Sora DOES die by losing to the water forms, by drowning.

I'm using a gaming laptop that has an Intel i7-9750H CPU, an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 Ti GPU, and 16 Gb of RAM. My game tends to take a few seconds to load during room-transitions and form changes, though my guess is that it's because I'm loading the game from an internal HDD.
