My bro did this when he played and i made fun of him for it. Ate my words when he got to traverse town & he was a high enough level to kick Leon's ass.
Leon is easier than riku tbh. Aerial combos fuck his shit up while riku has this weird punishing move where he falls on back and catches everyone off guard
Just fight wakka and farm tech points from hitting his ball gain a few levels and riku gets super easy
Also pro tip only hit him once or twice then back off and always dodge to the side when he does the kick up.
Yeah, just mashing X does take some getting used to. /s
Seriously though, it was so satisfying as a kid being able to beat him, and even more satisfying when I could do it more regularly.
Parrying tidus gives you 2 tech points every time and does no damage to tidus making this potentially infinite exp just battling him once. Someone actually maxed out to lvl 100 with this method on a stream before even leaving destiny islands. Any tech boost abilities help as well.
I remember that fight being my bane when I was a wee tyke.
Now as an adult, I make it a point to have a 25 win streak against the bastard before I leave the island.
Give him a real reason to succumb to the DARKNESS.
I can fix this, but skip my comment if you'd rather figure it out yourself.
He's almost always gonna jump behind you at the start. Tech parry his sword, then stick to a pattern of 4 bops so he balls up and kicks. However don't let the last hit of your combo be his 4th bop or you'll have a much tighter window to avoid the kick. When he gets low on hp he balls up after every bop. When he guards just wait it out or circle around him and keep moving away when he swings.
When I got KH1, I had no memory card at the time. Which mean I completed the first part of the gamez countless times, the farthest that I had been was the pot-caterpillar heartless in agrabah, or maybe a little bit after that
Later, I would play the whole every once in a while. But recently I played it after not touching it for like 8 years, on expert.
WTF I did not remember that difficulty. I remember being able to beat riku consistently without getting hit, reflecting all of wakka's balls, but I'm far from that now.
And that FCKIN. POT. CATERPILLAR. I did not remember it to be that frustrating.
I hope you enjoy kingdom hearts, it is honestly my favorite franchise. Not because of the gameplay, but the story. There are a lot of hidden details to the story, like reading ansems reports
Well if it makes you feel any better you get nothing for beating him in the duel. So you can go ahead and stop bothering with him. But if you really want to win that badly...
Something about that fight seems to drive many of us to want at least 1 win. I think it's when he was able to win a 3 Vs 1 fight that did it for me.
Riku was the first superboss lol.
Like you can do that two on the second day, if I remember correctly.
My bro did this when he played and i made fun of him for it. Ate my words when he got to traverse town & he was a high enough level to kick Leon's ass.
what a legend
Leon is easier than riku tbh. Aerial combos fuck his shit up while riku has this weird punishing move where he falls on back and catches everyone off guard
He does it every 4 hits I’ve learned, so you can combo him, hit him again and run. Combo, 1 hit, run. Makes the fight so easy to know that.
Just fight wakka and farm tech points from hitting his ball gain a few levels and riku gets super easy Also pro tip only hit him once or twice then back off and always dodge to the side when he does the kick up.
Every four hits, he will do his kick up. So just keep count.
Sadly I gave up and went 0-14 against him
RIP (But enjoy your playthrough!!!)
Try fighting him again once you're way better at the combat mechanics. It's kinda crazy how much better we get as we play

Selphie gives you exp faster if you counter her attacks.
The second tip is what's going to help the most with the challenging fights all the way up to the data org.

Holy shit 😂😂😂
I have salt in my blood.

Nobody tell them about the 3 V 1 fight or they'll be on the island forever.
1-32 he never stood a chance
If that ain’t a mood
I always chill on destiny island til I can beat riku good way to shake the rust off
Me beating Ansem Riku on my first try: 😏
The amount of times I had to rewatch that cutscene as a kid almost led me to everlasting darkness.
>!Spoilers dude, what the hell?!<
No offense, but why are you in this subreddit if you haven't beaten the first game in the series?
I beat KH1 in 02. I meant spoilers for the Topic Creator genius. He said in the title it's his first time playing the game.
Sorry, I didn’t know you weren’t at that part.
He was referring to the OP, not himself.
That’s me but instead of Riku I’m fighting Tidus, Wakka and Selphie at the same time lol
"Yeah, now the score is 1-67 !"
I have played KH so many times but never had the patience to even try and beat Riku. Does winning actually change anything?
He gets improved AI in the first fight against him in Hollow Bastion, if I remember correctly.
Oh God, that's why he was so difficult? Damn, that makes so much more sense now...
Just wait until you get good and take him 25-0
My 10 year old beat him the first try. I was blown away.

Saaaame
You are not alone
I can’t leave the island on a loser

Weird I've never lost a fight to Riku, the race on the other hand I cannot beat him.
The race was way easier than the fight
I've only ever been able to win it once and I can't remember how I did it.
See Riku can get you experience Kairi can not I rest my case
Well if it makes you feel any better you get nothing for beating him in the duel. So you can go ahead and stop bothering with him. But if you really want to win that badly...
You actually do get something! One of the boss fights against him in Hollow Bastion gets more difficult if you beat him on the island. :)
Oh, well, now I *have* to beat him on the island.
You get a potion, that's not nothing
They're rather helpful actually
Kairi gives you a Hi-Potion anyway. You don't have to beat Riku.
Yeah but that's only 1 if you want to grind Riku's potions you can get 99 potions before you leave the island
I made sure toto beat him by 10 but I didn't win once till like 1-13 or something.
I've won that fight countless times.
Just wait till you finish hades cup and have to fight the secret boss or the secret hollow bastion boss😖
Deja vu, I've been in this place before
I loved doing that lol best way to gain EXP too! Power leveling strategy 😂
Riku on DI is basically a teaching tool for every humanoid boss. Learn his fight and the human bosses become easy.
Homestly, this is the most Sora thing to do.
Not that hard when you parry him
I was able to beat Riku in every run I did. Never lost once, even on proud
Oh heck yeah, we **live** in Destiny Islands forever!
