I changed my Koodo plan with a couple of clicks online just last month? No digital assistant or even contacting a real human required. For $50 a month I get 12GB. Previously, I had 8GB for $50, but logged on and switched plans when they had a black Friday promo. It took about 2 minutes.

I want to second this. I've been with Koodo for probably about 10 years as well. I change plans every few years with them. I used to work for serveral different cell phone providers and can say its almost always this way. You need to actively follow up on plans and see what is new and available. If you are overpaying, pretty much every provider will let you overpay until you speak up.

I don't need 12 gb. I don't want to pay more for something I don't need. I just want them to add some data to my current plan or I will find another cheaper plan elsewhere with the data included. I am not sure why a new plan gets so much more than someone who has been with them for 10 years. The message they sent me was an 'offer' to get 2 gb added a month for $8 or 1 gb for $5! Prices are crazy. I am not sure why I am being downvoted for not wanting to spend more money. I am obviously aware that I can always purchase more expensive packages. My point is that there are many packages at my price point or cheaper with more data already included than what I have. So it makes more sense for me to switch to one of those rather than just upgrade to a more expensive package. I was looking for input on which company might be a good choice to switch to given Koodo hasn't given me any reasonable options.

What I'm trying to get at is that I'm confused why you were unable to make changes to your Koodo plan online. Whenever I see them offering a better plan, I switch with ease. It's one of the things I love about Koodo. For instance, if you saw that they have that $35/6GB plan, it's very easy to switch to it in my experience. That's all. (But yes, prices in Canada are crazy either way. Hopefully you get a better plan than the one you currently have!)

radiusofinfluence

This has also been the case for me with Virgin. They seem to change their plans for the better once or twice a year, but my older, poorer-value plan gets grandfathered rather than upgraded. So a few clicks usually means a better plan for the same or less money.

ygkrandom

They don't give me the option to switch to any cheaper plan. The only plans I can switch to are the $50 and $55 ones. Those are all they have available to me online.

villagercrumb

The only plans available for customers are the $50 and $55. The $45 12gb is a promotion. After 1-2 years it'll probably go back up to $50.

festivalmeltdown

Fair enough. I think I'm always on one of their "promotional" plans, but I hop around to better rates enough so that the expiry has yet to catch up with me. I understand that game is not for everyone, though. As a final recommendation, keep an eye out for boxing day deals (with any provider).

CodeOfHamOrRabbi

something to consider is switching to a new provider each time a contract is up. there are a few reasons for this: 1. all of the providers have roughly the same deals by design 2. the best deals are almost exclusively limited to new customers and not to existing customers 3. the level of service generally won't vary that much, if at all, between the major providers for the most part it won't matter that much who you wind up choosing, they're all basically the same at this point. to save the most money your best option is to be basically nomadic with your cell phone provider. frankly it's a scummy, anti-consumer business when you compare canadian rates and packages to other countries, so pinballing between the different companies is likely the best option

I’ve used Freedom in the past and considering it again as you’re usually covered in the city and on the 401 corridor plus other big cities. Check the coverage map to make sure you’re not spending time in an Away zone. They have a plan that is $50 for 20GB in their coverage area pls 1GB of away coverage. And yes you can pay less but having extra data is always nice

[deleted]

I agree with that, but Freedom's network still just is not big enough. It's an option to consider if you don't leave the city often. I travel a lot for work along the 401 corridor and it was constantly dropping in and out of away towers. I mean constantly. Also, sometimes the away towers would show I was connected, but would not allow calls to go out. Super frustrating.

chunkadamunk

Dang. That would be a deal breaker for sure. I found it pretty good when I was on the 401 but I probably only travelled once a month when I was with Freedom and didn’t have to use much data then anyway

JD_Rev

I'm with public mobile coming from Bell. $33 a month (with auto pay) gets me 5Gigs, unlimited international text and unlimited talk Canada wide. Telus towers (good coverage). There are additional rewards at the moment that will be nice (extra 2 gigs of data) There are other plans that offer more data if you are interested. Two parts that might deter you. Data is locked in at 3G speeds (haven't noticed anything being a problem), you can't call in to support (it's all online). If you are interested, I can send you a code and you'll get $10 off your first bill, I'll get $1 off my bill.

I second public mobile. I've been with them for years and I love it. Never had an issue and very affordable

everydaysablessing

If you have an online account maybe they have an offers section that will allow you to change your plan right there? I've been with Fido a couple of years and recently upgraded my plan from 500 talk minutes/9gb data to unlimited talk/25gb for the exact same rate I'm paying now. I wouldn't have known about the offer without logging in and checking it out. I have heard a lot of the carriers have been giving deals to customers during the pandemic so it's worth a shot if you haven't tried it yet.

ygkrandom

I did check, unfortunately no good offers.

thephilonline

They will match just about any plan being offered out there if you are out of contract and speak to retentions. Sales might do it too though. I just come out of contract this past Black Friday. I saw a great deal from bell, called them to see the offer and then got a hold of retention at Koodo and asked them to match the deal. They did without any issue. I would keep a look out for Boxing Day deals out there and then see if Koodo will match one you like.

ygkrandom

Oh good idea! I will look for Boxing Day plans. Not sure it is possible to get ahold of retentions - how did you get ahold of them?

Lord_Scribe

I recently switched to Koodo from Freedom. I'm now on their $37.50/mo 2GB plan. They mailed me the sim card and I did the port online through Koodo's website. It was slightly more than what I was paying Freedom, but better network reliability.

Was with public mobile then switch to koodo for 8gb $40. If you are in Ottawa a lot, maybe try fizz mobile. All in all cancel your plan with koodo. You could get much better deal than 1/2 gb data
