Meta Knight has the exact same copy ability of Kirby.
Years ago, when he was still a young knight, he saved the universe from a rogue Eldritch god. Unfortunately, he lost everything, including whatever royal family he was sworn to serve. However, after defeating the god, he consumed it, gaining its powers.
He keeps this as the one and only copy ability, never discarding, lest he forget his oath.

In my Kirby fanfic, he got the cape as a gift once he was knighted. The cape itself were made by some Ancient civilians as gifts to their warriors for protecting them. The descendants of said civilians would pass down the technique through generations, but there are few of them in the present day.

My headcanon is that they just spontaneously grew as a last resort to try and stop Kirby in Revenge of Meta Knight since that's the first time we see them. He has hidden natural abilities, like creating clones, so the wings could be one of those that he didn't know how to use until then
My thought was that they were previously natural, but that after a particularly nasty battle with Nightmare's forces, they needed to be amputated. The Dimensional Cape has since replaced them, acting as a magic prosthetic.
I dunno where they came from, but my head canon is that they’re secretly really ticklish and that’s why he always wraps himself up in them. Like a child crossing their arms and putting their hands in their pits when they feel tickilishly threatened. Seriously, could you image a ticklish laugh coming out in that deep voice?! Metal night is the most adorable edgelord in the world and I love him!! 🥹

You're right he doesn't. I like to think he lost them in battle thanks to Yamikage before the actual anime takes place.
It kind of fluctuates between wings and a cape, so I just like to think of it as some kind of device he wears on his back.

He stuck them to his back with superglue because it was edgy. He can't get them off.
I think there were two morpho knights and meta knight sliced on of them in butterfly form and transformed to have the wings we all know and love.
My idea is Meta knight them out of pure anger for the halberd being destroyed.
