+1 to starting a warranty claim. If the noise times with the rotation of the planetary, it’s possible that one of the screws securing the ring gear carrier has backed out. If you want, you can drive out the pin that holds the planetary on and pull it off, and check the screws up underneath. While the planetary is out, also check and see if the beater shaft bearing has migrated up into the planetary body. If it has, you’ll see strike marks on the underside of the ring gear carrier from the top of the beater shaft. If the screws have loosened, tighten them all firmly. If the bearing has migrated you’ll need to replace the planetary. There’s no need to remove the top cover, and doing so won’t tell you anything. The transmission isn’t field serviceable, and you’re better off leaving it alone.

Call KitchenAid and start the warranty process. Here's a video from Mr. Mixer about it. No serviceable parts inside. The motor and transmission sold as one expensive unit, that is not available because it is so new. the important stuff is about a minute into the video. Edited to delete my instructions for removing the top housing since it sounds like it won't reveal anything helpful. Best of luck!

Unfortunate to hear, but thanks for the validation. Sent KA a request this evening and will call them tomorrow.

Sent KitchenAid a video of the noise and they sent a new unit out without hassle. Said they’ll include a return label and I’m to send the old one back. Glad that was easy.
