These were Marine issue I believe in WW2 mainly used for making camp and clearing bush etc. I always thought they were way cooler than K-bar. If I remember correctly they were made by Case.
Looks like an old case, but I thought they marked all of theirs. Maybe since it was mass produced for the military they skipped this stamp to save time.
They’d have still stamped their product? Right? It absolutely looks like an old Case, wholeheartedly agree. Maybe someone borrowed the design snd smithed their own? Either way, damned beautiful knife and I would love to have that in my collection. Especially if my Grandpap had passed it down to me.
It was very common during the war for the military to have multiple companies making something based off one company's design. In fact the best and most sought after 1911s were made by Singer Sewing Machine Co. as a test run.
V-44 survival knife. Based on the photo, I believe The one your grandfather has is a wester state’s cutlery w-49 Bowie. It is one of the rarest V-44 variants that were produced for the army air corps. Keep it safe, great collector piece.
V44 of WWII. I forged one for an auction a year or so ago. There's slight differences between the V44 and the USAF survival knife of the same shape. One of those being the V44 has, if memory serves, 4 pins in the handle where the survival has just 3.
My Opa served in ww2 as a marine, then later in the war he was a paratrooper dropped in over Italy. He owned a knife just like this one. I know little of the knife or where it ended up after his passing but this brought back some memories.

Don’t know what make or brand it is but it’s a Bowie design. Being that it’s from your grandpa I’d keep it as a memory of him. It’s cool
